August How lucky were we to be able to hold our Anniversary lunch, three days before lockdown 5.0!

I am sure we all enjoyed it and the entertainment organ-ised by the fabulous Judy was a highlight of the day. When I was asked to request everyone to stay silent throughout the performance of the Melbournaires acap-pella group and you were all as quiet as lambs, I could tell everyone was blown away by their performance.

It was a good opportunity to welcome our new members who have hit the ground running by attending the lunch together with a number of other events. July has been another difficult month for our convenors who have done a marvellous job in postponing the various events and making alternative arrangements. These lockdowns sure keep us all on our toes!

Given the easing of restrictions issued by the Govern-ment, at the time of writing this, we will be able to meet at the church for our next General Meeting on 10th Au-gust. Please note the requirement to wear masks in-doors, so bring your mask along with you.

Until then, take care.

I do hope the majority of our Probus family are well and have survived our most recent lockdown in a positive and healthy manner. However we do have a few people needing our best wishes.

Lorna Johnson after celebrating her 80th birthday has had a successful knee replacement and is now recuperating at Donvale.

Robert Creek had surgery during the week and is now home again from Box Hill Eastern and doing well.

Veronica McLellan has had another trip to hospital and continues with her Chemo treatment.

Heather Baillie is staying with her daughter and has commenced some physio at St. Georges.

Also having physio at St. Georges is Lorraine Man-nering who is delighted to now be able to drive. Freedom!

Margaret Moyle and Shirley Bushnie both continue to receive good and ongoing care at Faversham Houe and Kew Gardens.

Other members who have received new hips, knees and shoulders over the past several months are all progressing well.

Of course we wish all of you having birthdays during August happy celebrations for your Special Day and a happy and healthy year!

Creative Pursuits met via Zoom this month owing to lockdown. We plan to meet at Elaine’s home on 23 August providing no more lockdowns! Bring along any handcraft you are undergoing or just come along for a chat.

Worryingly, Phil Pitsikas leads in the nega-tive territory but he’s not alone down there—Charlie is almost on the same return..

7:30pm at the Greythorn Centre. Until otherwise advised, due to the recently relaxed COVID re-strictions it’s ‘mask up’ and ‘bring your own cup’ if you’d enjoy a cuppa after the discussion.

The state of play

Awesome Angie Randall continues to lead but just like the Olympics some of the chasers have started to drop off.

Speaking of the Olympics, will we get an Olympic style finish?

Is Angie Randall, like Ledecky in the 1500m, relent-lessly tipping her way to an unassailable lead and victory?

Or, is there an Ariarne Titmus, methodically imple-menting a tipping plan to get to the lead exactly when it counts?

Or, heaven forbid, is there a Stephen Bradbury lurk-ing in the shadows waiting to glide to victory through a mess of fallen and failed tipsters?

Have fun and remember to tip responsibly!!

The recent lockdown in Victoria interrupted many plans—both of members and for our activity groups.

One such was the cancellation of the visit to Bishop’s Court which was scheduled for 17 June.

That visit has been rescheduled for Thursday 16 September.

The maximum number of participants remains and the entry fees have been pre-paid.

Members who ‘booked’ for the June visit but have not yet confirmed that they are coming on the September date PLEASE SEE Judy Bailey at the August meeting.

Garden Group On 15 July 14 members enjoyed a fascinating visit to the Gods, Myths and Mortals exhibition at the Hel-lenic Museum in the old Royal Mint in William Street.

The exhibition, on loan from the Benaki Museum of Athens, includes Neolithic pottery, Cycladic statues, Minoan figurines, Mycenaean jewellery, Hellenistic sculptures, Byzantine icons and manuscripts, Post Byzantine secular art and costumes, and Neo-Hellenic art and weaponry, including ornate swords and pistols belonging to Greek revolutionary heroes Kolokotronis and Mavromichalis.

We were treated to a great explanation of the won-derful exhibition by its assistant curator Sarah.

Of course, after the exhibition the group enjoyed

lunch at Max’s in Hardware Lane. Great, and spec-

tacular, food

Another of the wonderful sculptures –this one Venus in the mirror pool

What a celebration! We joined together at Greenacres on July 13th to celebrate 14 very successful years of our club.

Anjali Marcou from the Surrey Hills Branch of the Bendigo Bank pre-sented Ron with further support for our activities.

We also welcomed 4 new members to Greythorn Probus– Adrienne Salvagno, Jan James, and Pauline and Frank O’Brien. It was a great opportunity, too, to celebrate Lorna Johnson’s 80th.

A wonderful presentation of â capella singing by The Melbournaires. We all enjoyed a great range of songs and, in Stanley Holloway style, the story of Albert Ramsbottom, the lion and the stick with the horse’s head handle.
