THE SURVEY IS NOW CLOSED

WHY WE ARE CONDUCTING THIS RESEARCH We decided to create a questionnaire and send it to everyone in the sixth

form department to get ideas for our music video. As we are using the grime genre, we wanted to see what people already know

about this genre and what they would like to see within this genre in the future.

Even though girls do listen to grime, we wanted to further this, and make it appeal to them in the same way it appeals to boys. For this reason, we asked questions, knowing it will be mostly girls responding, to get ideas about what they in particular, would like to see in a grime music video.

However, even though our genre is grime, it is radically different through the lyrics as it is based on a true story by one of the artists and therefore, it is emotional and we wanted to make it effective in the same way it is effective in the actual music video. The storyline of the music video slightly subverts the conventional functions of the grime genre through this.

Q1. ARE YOU MALE OR FEMALE?

We asked this question first to see which sex is appealed to what genre the most. As most of our responses are from females (which isn’t surprising as girls are usually more engaged with their emails) we knew that the questionnaire would be useful for us to see how our genre, grime, would appeal to girls. This is because as we all know that the grime genre’s main target audience is male, we wanted to subvert this, and make it appeal to females as well, and therefore, we wanted to find out what elements females would be attracted to as we already have a clear idea on what elements men will be attracted to.

Q2 HOW OLD ARE YOU?

We sent this to the whole of the sixth form, including the staff, and having most of our responses by 16-18 was very useful as our target audience is to 15 and above. However, we made a mistake in this question by having a single textbox to respond to this question instead of multiple choice. This could cause lack of validity as some of the students may have lied about their age and exaggerate. For example someone responded ‘56’ and I doubt we have any staff within the sixth form, whom 56.

Q3 WHAT IS YOUR MUSIC GENRE PREFERENCE?

We also made a mistake with this question because 17 people chose other and wrote Indie as their music genre preference. Our genre, grime, only had 4, which disadvantaged us because we thought that grime would appeal to a lot of students at the Bridge Academy however, again, most of the responses are from girls and therefore, Grime wouldn’t be a popular answer for this question.

Q4 HOW DO YOU ACCESS MUSIC VIDEOS?

We decided to ask this question as evidence that convergent devices has taken over for access to the web and as predicted, most of our participants chose mobile device in how they access their music videos. Only 4 people chose tablets and this suggests that tablets haven’t taken over mobile devices and this could be because mobile devices are easier to carry and more useful.

Q5 DO YOU USE YOU TUBE TO ACCESS YOUR MUSIC VIDEOS?

We decided to ask this question because we will be releasing our music video on You Tube only. Therefore, this question helps us as it shows that we will gain the predicted audience from You Tube as 51/54 people responded yes for accessing music videos from You Tube.

Q6 WHICH ELEMENTS OF MUSIC VIDEOS APPEAL TO YOU THE MOST?

We asked this to have a clear understanding on what type of music videos appeal to our audience the most. Having 20/54 people answering strong narratives was useful for our music video as our main focus will be the narrative throughout. Furthermore, our music video has a emotional, effective storyline and therefore, the strong narrative will attract our audience. Similarly, the performance will also be significant in our music video because it will include the artist reflecting on his past and this would show the audience that it is about Franks brother and not anyone random.

Q7 THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP. WE DECIDED TO CREATE A GRIME MUSIC VIDEO. IF SO, WHICH ELEMENTS DO YOU ENJOY SEEING IN THIS GENRE?

We asked this question because we didn’t want to do a music video with our ideas only and therefore, we wanted to see which elements our audience may enjoy seeing in the grime genre. Having multiple locations as the most amount of votes gave us ideas of using different locations for the performance section and not just for the narrative section because our audience enjoys seeing this. However, even though choreography had a lot of votes also, it doesn’t suit our genre and the narrative as it has a deep storyline and therefore, we will not be using this element.

Q8 IF YOU LIKE KREPT & KONAN, DO YOU LIKE THE MUSIC VIDEO ‘MY STORY’? IF YES, PLEASE BRIEFLY COMMENT ON WHY THEY APPEAL TO YOU AS ARTISTS.

We had a range of different responses for this question. Even though some of the responses are sarcastic, we see that the participants who knows Krept & Konan says that their music videos are meaningful and relatable and this conforms to the ideas of our music videos as we also want to have a relatable narrative. Furthermore, the interpretations given to these artists are similar to the artists we created as we wanted the audience to be attracted to our audience to want to carry on watching our music video and not get bored straight away.

Q9 WE ARE GOING TO MAKE A MUSIC VIDEO FOR THEIR SONG ‘MY STORY’. DO YOU THINK THE NARRATIVE SUITS THE LYRICS AND MOOD OF THE SONG. IF YES, PLEASE BRIEFLY EXPLAIN WHY.

We asked this question because we wanted to create a similar mood to their music video. The lyrics of the music video are very deep and therefore, we thought that we cannot make a music video with dancing and colourful lighting as it is based on a true story and therefore, we may get criticised for subverting the usual style. I made a mistake when creating this question because in the question, it says, ‘if yes please briefly explain why’, however, I didn’t put that option and therefore, the participants couldn’t respond to why they said yes. This disadvantaged our group because we couldn’t see why our audience would think that the narrative suits the lyrics and mood of the song.

Q10 FINALLY, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE US CREATE SOMETHING RADICALLY DIFFERENT IN OUR MUSIC VIDEO? WE MAY TAKE THE GOOD IDEAS INTO CONSIDERATION AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CREDITED, PLEASE NOTE YOUR NAME DOWN.

Finally, we asked this as our last question to sum up the whole survey. We wanted to see the different ideas our audience may collect by the end of the survey. As our respondents have mentioned that it is a touchy subject and have a different storyline compared to most we see in grime music videos, we wanted to take them into consideration. Also, we liked the idea that the lighting should be kept dark and have a hospital as one of our settings as it can show how effective the narrative is which is our main focus.
