The Altran Automotive Industry

Innovation partner for engineering high tech mobility solutionsAnalysing the complete framework of automotive innovations (societal and governmental influences, technology trends, customer expectations, innovation in terms of economics management or strategies), innovation is one of the most important success factors today to maintain a strong competitive position in the automotive market. Innovation is also a key to resolving most of the global automotive challenges. Facing the potential for commercial blockbusters, such as hybrids, light-emitting diodes, or intelligent driver-machine interfaces, electronics seems to remain the biggest enabler to drive major innovations.

The continuous cost pressure in the automotive industry created by legislation, competition, increasing risk and stagnating customer demands has a strong impact on innovation management. OEMs and suppliers will have to significantly improve efficiency in all R&D processes to keep costs under control, and make car production a profitable business in the future.

Few industries are transforming their technological and industrial challenges into opportunities in the same way as the automotive industry. Here, this approach has given rise to innovative trends: new synergies, uses and infrastructures as well as new major markets, such as those in emerging countries, which offer bright growth prospects for the future.

Although, obviously, the new automotive age will always be rooted in the past, it will also pave the way for exploration into new areas offering a wide scope for creating the innovative mobility solutions of the future.

For over 25 years, Altran has worked with leading automotive companies to help them become high performers. As the engineering leader of Innovation, positioned as an “Innovation Partner”, Altran provides its customers with global solutions, through a network, in the six key areas of automotive expertise that address the new issues raised by these changing trends. It answers the fundamental questions related to the future in Powertrain, Body In White, Embedded Systems, Mobility Services, Enterprise Performance and Diagnostic & After-Sales Services.

Our extensive research and analysis of high performance in the automotive industry has provided us with deep insights into the capabilities that enable companies to outperform their competitors. Altran has developed a unique approach towards end-to-end solutions combining industry and business process knowledge with unique insights into existing and emerging technologies: • Understand and analyse market trends and

client expectations• Build up clusters and efficient partnerships• Raise innovative concepts and demonstrate

their relevance and feasibility• Define architecture and manage system

engineering activities• Engineer technical and technological systems• Design and optimise the supply chain

Our multi-disciplinary teams enable a fast and seamless collaboration, taking into account the different market structures, competitors and business models in each automotive segment.

Altran’s Automotive industry solution provides our clients with access to proven methodologies, taking account of shorten innovation cycles and deliver these solutions on a continuous innovation way.

The automotive industry is facing new and pressing challenges. Globalisation, individualisation, digitalisation and increasing competition are changing the face of the industry as we know it.

In addition, increasing safety requirements and voluntary environmental commitments by the automotive industry will also contribute to the changes ahead. With the objective of helping our clients to find new ways to create value and prosper in the future, Altran proposes a unique approach based on 6 key expertises, taking advantage of its international coverage both in mature and emerging countries, and also from other industries like Telecoms & Media, Aerospace & Defense or Energy sectors…

Energy and environmental challengeImprove the environmental performance of heat engines, as well as integrate alternative fuels, hybrid and electric engines.

Energy management calls upon invention and the implementation of innovative architecture, new materials and assembly processes as well as a structure that significantly reduces mass without sacrificing performance and safety.

Safety challengeThe increasing complexity of embedded systems and command-and-control strategies as well as the advent of electric powertrains and traction batteries are becoming new risk sources. Companies have now to ensure compliance with societal requirements while taking into consideration rapid changes in technologies, faster time-to-market and cost reductions. Eventually, introducing new technologies safely and securely has to remain a priority.

New auto-mobility challengeVehicles are becoming Information and Communication Technology platforms connecting drivers to the outside world. Bringing relevant and adapted mobility solutions into the car is a key-to-success.

New mobility patterns imply increasingly complex vehicles and require implementing more efficient methods and diagnostic tools.

Facing this challenge also means defining and deploying processes and IT systems to ensure that this activity is accurately monitored and constantly optimised and updated.

Altran has developed a Connected Car platform built on MeeGo, a Genivi-compliant Operating System. Altran’s Connected Car platform is fully automotive and integrated into the car electronics. With this platform you can benefit from GENIVI (faster time-to-market, cheaper development costs, swifter innovation), and adapted ergonomics (speech recognition, steering-wheel commands, etc).

The platform has a rich connection with the external world, opening up the car to a whole new world and allowing users to download applications and services from an application store… importantly, security has been built in: applications that are not certified to run in the car cannot be launched, ensuring a connected and safe user experience on the road.

Altran innovates… Altran builds…

Safety first

Although cars could be considered as “another” device, it is subject to very specific safety constraints: its main purpose is – and should remain – transportation. Security is also a critical factor since accessing a vehicle’s internal data and processes can be harmful – Altran’s technology ensures that only certified applications are run into the car.

Device Integration

Seamless integration using relevant wireless technologies is one of the keys to success. Altran’s Transparent Device Integration technology not only enables the seamless integration of your mobile applications into the car but also adapts them to the vehicle environment, thus ensuring that you get the very best from your connected car experience.

GENIVI-compliant OS combined with an application store

Altran’s Connected Car prototype is based on MeeGo, a Genivi-compliant OS, hence enabling faster time-to-market, reducing development costs and giving access to the world of “open-innovation”. Combined with an application store, you can have your favourite apps at your fingertips; a feature that makes Altran’s solution the perfect fit for your “connectivity experience”.

In-vehicle adapted HMI

New ways of interacting with the car will be required as trends in everyday usage evolve; Altran’s current prototype supports steering-wheel commands and speech recognition and will be able to accommodate future touch screen capabilities.
