ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH ST. JOHNS, MICHIGAN

Feeling uncomfortable about the

upcoming election? What is my role as a

Catholic voter?

How does the Church help me to speak

about political and social questions?

“Catholics have a moral obligation to promote

the common good through the exercise of

their voting

Privileges” (CCC 2240).

“It is not just civil authorities who have

responsibility for a country. Service of the

common good requires citizens to fulfill their

roles in the life of the political

community.” (CCC 2239).

This means citizens should participate

in the political process at the ballot box. The

Church equips its members to address and

social questions by helping them to

develop a well-formed conscience. Catholics

have a serious and lifelong obligation to form

their consciences in accord with human

reason and the teaching of the Church.

As stated in the Catechism of the

Catholic Church, "Conscience is a judgment of

reason whereby the human person recognizes

the moral quality of a concrete act that he is

going to perform, is in the process of

performing, or has already completed. In all

he says and does, man is obliged to follow

faithfully what he knows to be just and

right" (CCC 1778).

A well formed conscience

always starts and ends with prayer. Spending

time in front of the Blessed Sacrament, asking

Christ to guide your voting decision, will bring

the peace you seek.

To prepare for the November 8th

Election, consider:

• Getting to Mass 10 minutes early or

staying 10 minutes after Mass to pray; drop

in anytime the Church is open to pray in

quiet.

• Add a weekday Mass either at St. Joseph’s

or closer to your workplace.

• Fasting from a hour of electronics and

pray, think and listen.

For more information on forming your

conscience in preparation for the 2016

Elections check out the articles by Bishop Paul

(Bishop of Arlington Virginia) at:

Every suicide is tragic We believe in the respect for God’s gift of life from conception to natural death. One of the major issues threatening life at it vulnerable end is the reality of doctor assisted suicide. In four

states and several countries around the world, it is a legal and accepted medical practice. I’m not pro-abortion – I’m pro choice. I’m not for doctor assisted suicide – I support death with dignity. I would never have an abortion, but I can’t tell someone else what to do. I would never consider assisted suicide but who am I to tell others how to die. It’s my body so I am in control of it. It’s my body so I am in control of it. Sound familiar? Legislation in the Michigan House introduced earlier this month would allow physicians to perform assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. The Death with Dignity Act in the Michigan House of Representatives was introduced “to help get the conversation started”. “It's something I think every individual should have the right to deal with their own medical issues and have all the options on the table," said the House Democratic Floor Leader. This assisted suicide legislation will be discussed during a new session in the house in January. Proponents of doctor-assisted suicide try to draw a sharp distinction between those with a men-tal illness who want to end their lives and those with a terminal illness who express the same wish. They even insist we should not call the latter “suicide”, contrary to the plain meaning of the word. This is a tragically false distinction with far-reaching consequences. Suicidal individuals—with or without a terminal illness—typically do not want to die; they want to escape what they perceive to be an intolerable situation, and they inaccurately believe that suicide is their only way out. The patient, especially the elderly, requesting assisted suicide is often asking, "Does anyone want me to be alive, or care enough to talk me out of this request and support me through this difficult time?" Our laws shape cultural attitudes toward certain behaviors and influence social norms. Laws permitting assisted suicide culture communicate the message that, under especially difficult circum-stances, some lives are not worth living. This tragically false message will be heard not only be those with a terminal illness, but be person struggling with the temptation to end his or her life. Every sui-cide is tragic. The Catholic Church holds as sacred both the dignity of each individual person and the gift of life. Following are excerpts from the main references from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which summarize these teachings about the end of life: • 2276 “Those whose lives are diminished or weakened deserve special respect. Sick or handicapped persons should be helped to lead lives as normal as possible.”

• 2277 “Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable. Thus an act or omission which, of

itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder…” • 2278 “Discontinuing medical procedures that are burdensome, dangerous, extraordinary, or disproportionate to the expected outcome can be legitimate; it is the refusal of “over-zealous” treatment. Here one does not will to cause death; one’s inability to impede it is merely accepted….” • 2279 “Even if death is thought imminent, the ordinary care owed to a sick person cannot be legitimately interrupted…” Each of us needs to educate ourselves about how this issue fits with Christ’s plan for life. A starting place is USCCB.org/suicideistragic and in the CCC(available on-line and in our library).

Lighthouse Catholic Media’s featured CD

The Lamb's Supper Based on his best-selling book, Dr. Scott Hahn

reveals the early Christians' key to understanding the Mass: the Book of Revelation. With its bizarre imagery, mystic visions of Heaven, and end-times prophecies, it mirrors the sacrifice and celebration of the Holy Eucharist. See the Mass with new eyes, pray the Liturgy with a renewed heart, and enter into the Mass more fully and enthusiastically! We ask for a donation of $4.00 per CD. Please make checks payable to “Lighthouse Media”. All donations go toward the purchase of future CDs.
