Agape LifeNew Program Development: Agape Life

It was such a joy working with First Lady, Patrice Foster, and certified teacher, Debbie McGrath, here at Agape Summer Play. The children really enjoyed the daily word along with correlating crafts, songs, books, field trips and other activities. This style of teaching and learning is adopted from the curriculum of Kids and Books Academy.

Kids and Books Academy is known for having a whimsical approach to educating children. Our philosophy is that we shall always make books come to life one letter…. one word… one puppet at a time. The “book of the week” concept includes a comprehensive curriculum that incorporates literacy, math, social studies, sciences, art, music and physical education. This teaching strategy is accomplished through literacy activities such as puppet shows and centers (dress-up, housekeeping, block play, art, children’s library corner, puzzles, sand and water table, and even nutrition). The moment you walk through the doors of KABA, it is evident that

The children had a blast learning about the Lord their Shepherd. They experienced creative ways to memorize the 23rd Psalm. A variety of sheep crafts were made, sheep songs were sung and a trip to Bluebird Gap Farm brought the

lesson to life as the kids got up close and personal with real-life sheep!!

The book, One Lost Sheep, was read to help the children understand the Parable of the Lost Sheep. The kids were prayed over daily and fed nutritious meals, which included snacks that were shaped like sheep. Summer Play at Agape was offered as a service to the community. We thank the parents for sharing their children and we look forward to enriching their lives again while continuing to celebrate the life of Christ. Stay tuned for our next event advertised in the Agape Life Newspaper!

Grace to you!

We are excited about what will soon be one of the premier health organizations in our area that will focus on maintaining and restoring people to optimal health.

To be of service to others is the ultimate goal of life. There is nothing else that can even match up to how service can enrich our lives. You as mental health, and health, providers are being stretched beyond a healthy limit. This can negatively affect not only us as health providers, but our quality of care to the people we serve.

At AFI, we understand the stress and burnout associated with the helping professions. Our team has been working tirelessly on a model of support services for you and the people you serve.

We can help you in two ways: 1. We will provide complimentary treatment interventions for your clients.

VIP Card FundraiserArticle by Kenya Mawusi

This past month, Jordan Foster, daughter of Floyd and Patrice Foster, showed us all at Agape Foundations, Inc. what it means to rally behind a cause you believe in.

One night, at home, 5-year-old Jordan saw an advertisement on T.V. about the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters’ (CHKD) sixth annual Anthem LemonAid stands to support the hematology- oncology clinic at CHKD. It was free to participate, CHKD provided each participant with

a set-up kit, and CHKD only asked that donations be accepted for the lemonade.

Jordan held her fundraiser on Friday July 18th, at the Farm Fresh on Route 17 in Yorktown. As shoppers approached the store they could not resist the megaphone calling out, “CHKD, Let’s put a squeeze on childhood cancer!” After four hours in the hot sun, Jordan was exhausted but proud that her hard work yielded $283! After a reminder of the cause, she even found enough motivation to continue her fundraiser the next morning during the AFI Rummage Sale. This selfless 5-year-old’s efforts were featured on local WAVY TV 10’s evening news.

To find out how you can help kids get the medical treatment they need, visit the CHKD website. You too, can help “Put the squeeze on childhood cancer!”

the book of the week is always incorporated throughout the day and the life of the center from the food we eat, the academic and social lessons we learn, the field trips we explore, and the photos/videos we show. This educational approach strengthens the cognitive, social, emotional, physical and creative abilities within our children. Also, it brings about continued unity amongst the staff, parents and children as we are learning together daily. Your child receives the best of care and is taught in a very educational, colorful, nurturing, fun-filled and developmentally appropriate childcare facility where they are cherished, honored, adored and loved.

The mission of Kids and Books Academy is to create an educational amusement childcare center where every single child has a heartfelt desire to learn. Here at Kids and Books Academy, we know that all children can and will learn! We believe in differentiating instruction to meet the needs of each child. We believe in building self esteem and confidence in our children, which enable them to feel empowered to take on any task. KABA provides exciting fun-filled projects and activities that are developmentally appropriate, yet challenging. We believe that children should work at their own pace with the encouragement to be unique and creative. Children feel successful and safe due to individual choice making and accomplishments. Our children learn in a trustworthy, safe and orderly environment, where they can develop therefore demonstrate the passion, knowledge, competence, academics, social skills, values, morals, and independence needed to become responsible and productive 21st Century citizens.

All of us take on many roles in our lives. Let’s face it, people depend on us. They depend on us to be parents, employees, friends, spouses, and the list goes on and on. We continue to take on these roles until our plates run over. “The proximity of a desirable thing tempts one to overindulgence. On that path lies danger.” It is a great thing to feel needed, however sampling too much from the buffet of life may lead to one serious case of indigestion.

The main cause of indigestion is overeating. Biologically when one overeats it causes their metabolism to slow down, which causes such problems like being overweight. Now, gaining a few pounds can cause a person to be sluggish and tired. These are the same attributes that occur when we fill our plates with life demands.

Our plates are full with items, some are healthy and others are things we need to avoid. However, before we can finish one task, it appears that we are taking on something else. Adding to our plate, taking on another role. Life is a buffet; one should choose what will nurture their lives instead of hindering it.

Think about your own plates and how you sample from the buffet of life. There are things that are good for you to have, things that are necessary. Then there are some items that you love to “eat”, but are not necessarily health. There are items that you may indulge in and items that you only sample. Looking at your life’s plate are you content with your well-being or are you on that path to danger.

Here’s the challenge: Take a regular paper plate and on the back write the word “me”. Then on the front write down all of the roles you fulfill in your life. Make the plate your own. Then once you have completed the task, analyze your plate. Look at all the things that you are carrying. Are you physically and emotionally fit to carry that plate? Or are you trying to find an orange tray to help you carry it?

Life’s buffet is desirable, however watch what you sample and make sure that you are fulfilled by everything that is on your plate. If not, then you may want to hit your own personal emotional gym before you have emotional indigestion.

Flowers are like a little bit of happiness therapy. So, let your creativity flow and your garden is a place to relax and refresh. It should soothe you and make you happy. Make it uniquely yours by using atypical containers. Anything that will hold dirt and makes you smile is perfect.

Recycling ideas are my favorite idea things to use, like old wash pans, old cook pots, burn cans, and old shoes. Hats, purses and even a bike would also make great containers. I believe using a little bit of the unexpected adds fun to decorating. What better place to be unpredictable than in the flower garden?

My last project was the most meaningful of them all. These old pots and wash pans were throw away years ago by my grandmother. Getting them down the side of a mountain and coming back to my aunt’s house in the pouring down rain was difficult. Restoring them with color and flowers made it all worthwhile.

What’s your favorite garden container? Always remember: “The word of God is the seed.”

Pool parties, trips to the beach and Busch Gardens; this is what summer is suppose to look like. Not book reports and research papers. I understand why schools give homework

during the summer, so we don’t forget everything we’ve learned, but it still doesn’t make it ok. In addition to textbook experiences, kids need real life experiences; and summer time is the best time to get those experiences.

This summer, I went to Georgetown University for a 3-week SAT program. Each day, included 3 hour and a half and 1 two hour classes, with a side of homework courtesy of each class. My days started at 9 a.m. and ended at 8 p.m., and I ate the same food every day.

Kids want to relax in the summer and feel free from homework. I thought that was the reason why we had a summer, to get a break from school and homework. Most kids don’t even attempt to start their work until the week before school starts. I know the perfect solution, just stop assigning summer work!

I am a die-hard Miami Heat fan, “Born and Raised in the County of Dade” as the saying goes. Miami-Dade County, that is for everyone that didn’t understand the Florida terminology, because of the amount of independent cities in the Hampton Roads

Area, instead of different counties like in Florida. Every Miami Heat fan was devastated when they found out that LeBron James chose to go back to his hometown in Cleveland. His reasoning? “To bring back Championships to his Hometown. Cleveland hasn’t had a championship in any major sport since 1964 and I would just like to bring one back to my hometown.” When LeBron entered the league I wasn’t much of a fan of him. Then when he came to Miami in 2010 I still wasn’t a fan of him, however I greatly appreciated the massive contributions that he brought to my favorite team. I kept telling everyone “Don’t jump on LeBron’s bandwagon. This is NOT his [LeBron’s] Team. It’s Wade’s team.” You know, the guy that brought Miami its first Championship in 2006 and received Finals MVP that same year; yeah that guy. Just because you are the best player in the league doesn’t mean that you can move to any team and be the leader, and change the whole face. You’re a visitor here. It was CLEAR that LeBron couldn’t do it alone in Cleveland, so he wanted to jump on the Miami bandwagon to play with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade just to get Championships. Why would Miami Heat fans be angry that he wanted to finish his career and clean up his “bad reputation” from how he left it in Cleveland? He used us to get Championships and we used him for four years of great sports entertainment. Between 2010 and 2014 we made the finals EVERY YEAR!!! Out of that we won two back-to-back championships. Bottom line, LeBron was never here to stay. He was just vacationing in Miami, and all true heat fans knew that; sorry “fair weather fans” if you didn’t see this one coming. It is and will forever be Wade County (Dade County) in Miami.

Wake up, eat, work, eat, get back from work, eat then sleep. Most people share this mundane routine from Monday through Friday, but it doesn’t

mean you have to. It’s time to step out of your comfort zone. The only way we can evolve as human beings is if we take risks, explore the world around us, and continuously set new goals for are self. That feeling of hope that things will be better or different than the day before is a great incentive to get up in the mornings.

Try sitting down this week and writing a list of things you’ve dreamed of doing or topics you’re curious about. This is a great way to get to know yourself and remember that you’re not a drone that’s meant to work 9 to 5 everyday for the rest of your life. Even if you have just 5 minutes you can find ways to fulfill your aspirations. So you want to learn a new language? There are great apps like Duolingo and Memrise, which you can download onto your phone and learn a few words on the go. And, if you want to learn a new subject or pick up a new skill, Coursera.org is a good place to start. The website offers a diverse selection of courses that you can take for free and learn from top educators from around the world. Don’t worry you can go at your own pace. In this day and age with tons of information just a click or tap away there’s no pressure to set aside huge chunks of time to take on new challenges.

You know that saying “go big or go home?” It’s a load of crap. Just because the risks you take, or the changes you make, aren’t newsworthy doesn’t mean they’re not worth the time. Here’s a better quote to live by, courtesy of Neale Donald Walsch, Author of Conversations with God, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

How to refurbish your own items:

• Drill a hole on the bottom (shoes), or on the side (of a fire barrel).

• Spray sparkle spray paint onto the item— doesn’t stick to rubber items.

• Use the hole, at the bottom of the shoes, to stack the shoes or stick them into the ground, so they won’t fall over.

• Add the plant, then add soil into the item. Use a plastic plant pot when refurbishing a fire barrel can.

• Wait until the flowers bloom (sometimes through the holes on the side of the barrel), they’ll be gorgeous.

As a whole, I think there is a sad tendency in most of us to underestimate just how powerful we are, and how much greatness lies within each and every one of us – just waiting to get out.

The reality is, if you knew just how special you were, and how much greatness went into making you the unique person that you are, I’m convinced that you would immediately know that nothing can truly keep you from achieving what you want in life.

The journey is not always an easy one, and with very little lasting, or true value, is first paved with an easy road. In fact, upon reflection, we often find it’s during the times which we believed to be most challenging, that end up eventually serving to make us better, and more prepared to meet with success in our given endeavors.

I’m suggesting that the skills it takes to become who we desire to be are learned most often through times of hardship or unrest.

Certainly, the good times, and study in self-improvement plays a part, but don’t discount the importance of life’s challenges either. In the end, all parts of our life can be valuable teachers.

We need only accept that each event, positive or negative, can hold in it an opportunity to be made better for having experienced it. That’s certainly not to say that we’re going to find any sort of joy in each, and every one of life’s events, certainly not the negative ones anyway.

However, I believe it’s worthwhile to look for the lessons that exist in both the good and bad in our lives, and being careful not to dwell on the negative. Remember, there is a huge difference between dwelling on, and simply learning from and moving past something.

Always remember that your very presence is a gift to this world.

Honor the creator who gave you that gift by developing and sharing your unique talents with the world.

More often than not, you will find that you attract into your life what you put out.

Is it possible that millions of Americans are working tirelessly toward financial security with a mind set that will keep them wandering in the wilderness wishing, working, and waiting for a way to wealth that will never happen?

What if hard work, and great ideas are not enough? What if it’s not as much about what we do,

as it is about what we think? What Is Your Money Blueprint and How Is It Formed? From the Book Secrets of the Millionaire Mind – T. Harv Eker.

“Five minutes of time can predict your financial future for the rest of your life.”

How? In a short conversation, we can identify what’s called your money and success “blueprint.” Each of us has a personal money and success blueprint already embedded in our subconscious mind. And this blueprint, more

than anything, and everything else combined, will determine your financial destiny.

What is a money blueprint? As an analogy, let’s consider the blueprint for a house, which is a preset plan or design for that particular home. In the same way, your money blueprint is simply your preset program or way of being in relation to money.

I want to introduce you to an extremely important formula.

It determines how you create your reality and wealth. Many of the most respected teachers in the field of human potential have used this formula as a foundation for their teachings.

Called the Process of Manifestation, it goes like this:

T—>F—>A = RThoughts lead to feelings. Feelings lead to

actions. Actions lead to results.Your financial blueprint consists of a

combination of your thoughts, feelings, and actions in the arena of money.

So how is your money blueprint formed? The answer is simple. Your financial blueprint

consists primarily of the information, or “programming” you received in the past, and especially as a young child.

Who were the primary sources of this programming or conditioning? For most people, the list includes parents, siblings, friends, authority figures, teachers, religious leaders, media, and your culture, to name a few.

Isn’t it true that certain cultures have one way of thinking and dealing with money, while other cultures have a different approach? Do you think a child comes out of the womb with his or her attitudes toward money, or do you believe the child is taught how to deal with money?

Every child is taught how to think about, and act in relation to money. The same holds true for you, for me, for everyone. You were taught how to think and act when it comes to money.

These teachings become your conditioning, which becomes automatic responses that run you for the rest of your life.

Unless, of course, you intercede, and revise your mind’s money files.

We said earlier that thoughts lead to feelings, that feelings lead to actions, that actions lead to results. So here’s an interesting question: Where do your thoughts come from? Why do you think differently from the next person?

Your thoughts originate from the “files of information” you have in the storage cabinets of your mind. So where does this information come from? It comes from your past programming. That’s right, your past conditioning determines every thought that bubbles up in your mind. That’s why it’s often referred to as the conditioned mind. To reflect this understanding, we can now revise our Process of Manifestation in the following manner:

P—>T—>F—>A = R

Your programming leads to your thoughts; your thoughts lead to your feelings; your feelings lead to your actions; your actions lead to your results.

Therefore, just as is done with a personal computer, by changing your programming, you take the first essential step to changing your results. So how are we conditioned? We are conditioned in three primary ways in every arena of life, including money:• Verbal programming: What did you

hear when you were young?• Modeling: What did you see when you

were young?• Specific incidents: What did you

experience when you were young? The three aspects of conditioning are

important to understand.Change the way you unconsciously think

about money and change your financial situation for ever.

I always fix this quick dip to take the edge off while I finish up making dinner. It’s great as dip during Football season as well. This is not for the faint of heart; it has some heat.

Buffalo Chicken Dip:- 1 1/2 cups cooked and shredded chicken or 1 (12 ounce) can chunk chicken, drained- 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened- 1/2 cup Ranch dressing- 1/2 cup Buffalo wing sauce (such as

Frank’s Red Hot, not to be confused with their pepper sauce. Start with less if you want and add more to your desired hotness.)- 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese - blue cheese crumbles (optional)- Heat chicken and Buffalo sauce in a skillet over medium heat, until heated through.

Make sure to break up the chicken so there are no big chunks. Stir in cream cheese and ranch dressing. Cook, stirring until well blended and warm. Mix in shredded cheese. Pour into a shallow dish or pie pan and sprinkle with blue cheese crumbles and microwave it until the cheese melts. We usually only sprinkle blue cheese on half of it for those who aren’t blue cheese fans. Serve with chips for dipping.

She never got to dance,Or go to her own Prom. She never got the chance,

To forget where she came from.

She never got to kiss,A man she idolized.

She never felt love’s bliss,‘Cause she was paralyzed.

She never got to talk,About love with a smile. She never got to walk,

Down a Church’s Aisle.

She never got to say,Those precious words “I Do”.

But she was far and away,The strongest girl I ever knew.

She couldn’t brush her hair,Or put make up on her face. She couldn’t hold you dear,

Or give you a warm embrace.

She couldn’t clasp her hands,As if in the form of prayer. She couldn’t understand,

Why she was in a wheelchair.

She never showed her fears,Or let you hear her cries.

She never showed the tears,That fell down from her eyes.

She never looked for pity,Or sympathy from you.

That’s why she’ll always be,The strongest girl I ever knew.

On July 9, 2014, The “Crew” from Agape Foundations Inc., came out to help clean up a building that was defaced by a few teens a few months prior. Lead by Ackerly Barnett, there was a really nice-sized clean-up party, ages ranging from 13-23.

Mrs. Barbara Whitaker is the owner of the facility at 40 Hunt Club Dr, Hampton VA. She was in the midst of getting the facility ready to meet the needs of the mentally ill to provide them with adequate

housing. The defacing of the property delayed Mrs. Whitaker’s plans to open to the public, and she needed extra arms to assist with cleaning up the mess. The crew wasted no time in asking what they could do next, once each task was completed, and they were awarded with (5) boxes of pizza as a token of Mrs. Whitaker’s appreciation.

The look on her face when she saw how many young men were there to volunteer and give her a helping hand was priceless!

A very special thank you to the Crew at Agape Foundations Inc. for paying it forward to members of the community in need of a helping hand!

I’ve had a lot of internships and professional interviews, but as a Graphic Designer, my professional wear isn’t the typical black skirt-suit and white collard shirt. I like color and style, and something to make me stand out; not blend in.

I like to think I know what’s appropriate, and what’s not for each setting, but it never

hurts to get a second or third opinion.

For one, the basic items every business woman needs to have in her closet, courtesy of Glamour.com.1. Black Blazer2. Crisp White Shirt3. Dark blue or black skinny jeans4. Thin V-neck sweater5. Silk blouse6. Pencil Skirt

Another site, corporette.com, has a section on another basic item—the tote bag. Sometimes it’s hard to find the right bag at the right price, but the site gave tips on what to look for in a bag.

1. Black (can be worn with any color outfit)2. Structure (stands up by itself )3. Size (big enough to hold a folder with your resume, small bag of makeup and a bottle of water)

4. Interior Organization (pockets, so you can find what you need quickly, without digging)

Any of these items paired with a pair of flats, or heels, is a recipe for success. Ladies, never stop expanding your wardrobe. Men and women, send in your workplace outfit (to [email protected]) to be featured in next month’s newspaper.

• The Silent Seat Squeeze: To start toning, simply squeeze the buttocks, hold for 5-10 seconds, and release. Repeat until the agenda wraps up or the glutes tire. The results will be uplifting in more ways than one.

• The Secret Handshake: Sitting up and with feet flat on the floor, clasp hands

together as if giving yourself a handshake (with one hand’s thumb pointing to the floor and the other pointing to the ceiling). Then pull! Bodyweight training of both arms (you should definitely feel this in those biceps). Hold for 10 seconds or more, release, and repeat.

• The “Crunch Time” Crunch: The deadlines are looming, as are hopes for a six-pack by summer. With both elbows on the thighs, try to curl the chest in towards the legs while resisting the movement with the arms. Hold for 10 seconds, release, and repeat times 10.

• An adult has fewer bones than a baby. We start off life with 350 bones, but because bones fuse together during growth, we end up with only 206 as adult.

• Did you know that you get a new stomach lining every three to four days? If you didn’t, the strong acids your stomach uses to digest food would also digest your stomach.

• Your nose is not as sensitive as a dog’s, but it can remember 50,000 different scents.

• The small intestine is about four times as long as the average adult is tall. If it weren’t looped back and forth upon itself, its length of 18 to 23 feet wouldn’t fit into the abdominal cavity, making things rather messy

• This will really make your skin crawl: Every square inc h of skin on the human body has about 32 million bacteria on it, but fortunately, the vast majority of them are harmless.

• The air from a human sneeze can travel at speeds of 100 miles per hour or more -- another good reason to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze -- or duck when you hear one coming your way.Courtesy of howstuffworks.com
