Every year Mr Janssen has enjoyed greater success rapidly gaining his Associate and Mas- ters Recognition within the Industry, becom- ing a finalist in the Landscape Category, being awarded NZIPP Auckland Photographer of the Year in 2011, being invited to participate as a judge for the last two years, and now becoming a Fellow of NZIPP and finalist for the supreme award. “I agonise over what to enter into the awards. Every year I aim for something different to pre- vious years. The awards encourage us to really push our boundaries and explore new tech- niques and subject matter. They keep us on our game and ultimately benefit our custom- ers as we improve” says Mr Janssen, who was awarded two Gold, three Silver Distinction, three Silver and one Bronze Award. Although the Gold Awards are the most cov- eted, Mr Janssen said his Silver Distinction Award for a Commercial shot of a welder was one of the most special. He passionately de- scribes his drive to add a creative component to traditional commercial photography which can often be mundane and ordinary. Ultimately it was the Gold Awards that gained Mr Janssen his NZIPP Fellowship and the dis- tinction of being on stage with the Industry greats and heralded as one of the top photog- raphers in the country. Mr Janssen’s first Gold was awarded in the Landscape Category for “The Silo”, an emotion- ally charged image created on a particularly difficult day for him. The judges commented that it was a powerful piece of visual commu- nication promoting a superior emotional re- sponse and evoking an enduring quality. It is a monument that just keeps rising up into the distance, a metaphor for a life journey, a grind- ing slog with no ending and a stair case that can’t possibly get you to the top. It’s dark and gritty. A second Gold was awarded in the Creative Section for a gnarly old tree, an acknowledge- ment of getting older and the passing of time. When you look closely you notice a tiny figure, a dog and a bi-plane. “We are truly small and insignificant and alone” says Mr Janssen. It is another masterpiece of creative interpretation and technical excellence. Mr Janssen often judges and runs workshops for numerous local camera clubs and photo- graphic societies. He was invited to be a judge at Iris again this year and takes this role very seriously. “There are three days of print judging sometimes running for 12 ½ hours and we are continually trying to read images and see what the author wants us to see. It is hard work and tiring but worth every moment. To be a part of such an event is truly inspiring.” With the awards over for another year, it is back to Redzebra Studio for Mr Janssen. The Waiuku Netball U15 Represent-ative Team recently competed in the North Island U15 Tournament held in New Plymouth. The team says this year has seen great improve-ment by the team with a focus on preparation for their trip. This was the last of six fi xtures and a fantas-tic tournament to be part of.

Pukekohe photographer Harry Janssen was named one of four finalists for the supreme ‘NZIPP Photographer of the Year’ Award at the prestigious national Iris awards in Auckland.

The New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) is the only qualifying body for professional photographers in New Zealand and covers wedding, portrait, and commercial disciplines. It ensures members adhere to the highest standards of creative and business practices, and the Iris Awards are an annual event showcasing the best of the best.

Every year Mr Janssen has enjoyed greater success rapidly gaining his Associate and Mas-ters Recognition within the Industry, becom-ing a finalist in the Landscape Category, being awarded NZIPP Auckland Photographer of the Year in 2011, being invited to participate as a judge for the last two years, and now becoming a Fellow of NZIPP and finalist for the supreme award.

“I agonise over what to enter into the awards. Every year I aim for something different to pre-vious years. The awards encourage us to really push our boundaries and explore new tech-niques and subject matter. They keep us on our game and ultimately benefit our custom-

ers as we improve” says Mr Janssen, who was awarded two Gold, three Silver Distinction, three Silver and one Bronze Award.

Although the Gold Awards are the most cov-eted, Mr Janssen said his Silver Distinction Award for a Commercial shot of a welder was one of the most special. He passionately de-scribes his drive to add a creative component to traditional commercial photography which can often be mundane and ordinary.

Ultimately it was the Gold Awards that gained Mr Janssen his NZIPP Fellowship and the dis-tinction of being on stage with the Industry greats and heralded as one of the top photog-raphers in the country.

Mr Janssen’s first Gold was awarded in the Landscape Category for “The Silo”, an emotion-ally charged image created on a particularly difficult day for him. The judges commented that it was a powerful piece of visual commu-nication promoting a superior emotional re-sponse and evoking an enduring quality. It is a monument that just keeps rising up into the

distance, a metaphor for a life journey, a grind-ing slog with no ending and a stair case that can’t possibly get you to the top. It’s dark and gritty.

A second Gold was awarded in the Creative Section for a gnarly old tree, an acknowledge-ment of getting older and the passing of time. When you look closely you notice a tiny figure, a dog and a bi-plane. “We are truly small and insignificant and alone” says Mr Janssen. It is another masterpiece of creative interpretation and technical excellence.

It is hard work and tiring but worth every moment. To be a part of such an event is truly inspiring.”

With the awards over for another year, it is back to Redzebra Studio for Mr Janssen.

As the storm over Fonterra’s handling of its whey contamina-tion issues dies down slightly, attention is being focussed on another large organisation which is doing itself no favours in its communication with its stakeholders. The Auckland Council, formed on the basis of savings to rate-payers and more accountability, is proving to be one of the most frustrating organisations to deal with from a media and ratepayer standpoint. We had a reader this week trying to make sense of her rates bill, and she had travelled to both the Franklin and Manukau Auckland Council offices, to be told the staff there couldn’t explain the issue she raised.I don’t blame her for being confused. Naturally, we are inundated with emails from Council tell-ing us what a sterling job the Council is doing. But, they only paint half the picture.Earlier this year, they sent this: “The draft plan also includes proposals to reduce costs to ratepayers. Council plans to de-liver more than $64 million of new ongoing operating savings for 2012/2013 and 2013/2014, in addition to the $81 million of efficiency savings delivered since the first year of the new council.”So, if Council plans to deliver a total of $145 million in sav-ings, one needs to ask why are Franklin’s rate’s increases among the highest in the region? In fact, why are we having a rates increase at all? Reducing costs to ratepayers should mean just that.It shouldn’t mean ‘we haven’t charged you as much as we were going to originally.’

Recently the Waiuku Col-lege Gold and Silver Net-ball teams travelled to Mel-bourne to compete in the four day Waverley Interna-tional Secondary Schools Netball Tournament.

For most of the girls, this was the most competitive tournament that they had ever played in. Over the four days both teams played 11 games of netball, which saw Gold secure five wins and finish in 10th place while Sil-ver had two wins, and they finished 23rd.

Management of the teams said all of the girls played well and it was a great experience for them. Both teams would like to thank their sponsors, their coaches Rachel Browne Cole (Gold) and Teresa Gea-ley (Silver) and parents and supporters for making the trip possible

They say the level of net-ball in Melbourne has set them up well for the rest of the season in Waiuku. Both teams finished as first round winners in their respective grades and they have both won two from two in the cur-rent round.

Gold are also preparing for the Upper North Island Sec-ondary School tournament, being held during the first week of September in Auck-land.

Over 100 teams are en-tered into this tournament

Weekly Sudoku with compliments of: Franklin Anglicans had a jolly old lunch time at the Counties Racing Club last Saturday. The parishes of Pukekohe, Bombay/Pokeno and Waiuku-Mauku do this annual day at the races to raise funds. Thanks to generous sponsorship from local businesses, half of them from Waiuku, the event was a great success. Race No 3 of the day at Pukekohe, the Parish Fundraiser 1200, was won by Twilight Dragon.

Losing tickets and door tickets went into the draw for numerous prizes and there was a silent auction for a beautiful handcrafted quilt donated by the sewing group from St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Pukekohe. many had a dip into a raffle or two, including one for the New Zealand Spinal Trust, who held a function next door.

Two events in Franklin recently marked Yorkshire Day, celebrated officially on Au-gust 1. A lunch at the Pukekohe Cosmo-politan Club drew over 100 people of all ages to celebrate their Yorkshire ancestry.

Ron Bird opened proceedings before Lynne Hartley announced the official ar-rival of a Yorkshire flag and another flag from the Skipton Council.

A traditional fish, chips and mushy peas lunch was served, before a Yorkshire quiz which featured prizes of confection-ary and other items from the northern

England county.A cutting of the cake was done by the

oldest and youngest attendees, Marga-ret Rex (92), and Chris Wood, (12), who were both born at Meanwood Hospital in Leeds, but who met for the first time at the Pukekohe event.

The second function was held at Wai-uku’s Shires restaurant, where a Skype link with Skipton was shown on a big screen from 6.30pm, allowing local coun-cil dignitaries to interact with the Mayor of Skipton. There was some good-natured

banter between Waikato Mayor Alan San-son and his Skipton counterpart, while others to speak with their UK counter-parts included Auckland Council repre-sentative Dan Lynch, Waiuku’s Bernard Batty on behalf of the RSA, and William Trevarthern, representing NZ Scouts.

Yorkshire bunting was displayed at both events, while the historic Kentish Hotel in Waiuku also flew the Yorkshire flag in commemoration.

Planning for next year’s event is already underway.

Well-known Pollok pho-tographer Aliah Jan was awarded six awards at the 2013 NZ Institute of Pro-fessional Photographer’s Iris Awards last weekend in Auckland.

The NZIPP annual confer-ence Infocus was held at the Pullman Hotel, Auckland from August 3 to 6.

She won a Silver Distinc-tion Award in the Commer-

cial Category for an archi-tectural image of the Sydney opera house.

An Australian judge thought the picture was one of the best images he has ever seen depicted of that iconic building because of the artistic composition and details of every single tile shown in the image of the Opera House.

Waiuku 17-year-old Lucy Croft already has one major award to her name, having just received her shield as South Auckland Cadet of the Year, and in a few weeks expects to complete her badging for the Order’s highest youth award, the Grand Prior Award.

The last Grand Prior award for a Waiuku cadet was around 20 years ago, and it is believed that the local group has only three Grand Prior awards ever in their history.

Lucy has been a member of St John for eight years, originally in England and then in New Zealand after her family emigrated. Recent-ly promoted to Cadet Leader at Waiuku, Lucy completed a three-day leadership course at Clarks Beach and, for her Cadet of the Year award, was up against two other finalists. Lucy completed a 10-minute presentation and was then interviewed by six area managers.

As Cadet Leader, Lucy has been teaching some of the younger cadets, assisting them with their badgework and helping with divisional training.

With just a couple of badges to go before she can receive the Grand Prior award, usually presented by the Governor-General, Lucy will not only become one of the few local St John members to achieve the honour, she will also be one of the youngest - the award can be worked toward up to 21 years of age, and she anticipates having the work completed

Brothers Jordan and Jona-than McFall could be said to be among Pukekohe’s bright-est sparks, as they prepare to take part in the ECANZ Chal-lenge, the country’s toughest contest for apprentice elec-tricians.

The brothers, who work for different companies, are among 10 finalists selected from 116 entrants country-wide, through a series of regional knockout heats, to reach the gruelling two day final, to be held at Hamilton’s Claudelands Events Centre tomorrow and Thursday.

The competition, now in its 12th year, is organised by the Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand.

There are two prize cat-

egories – Commercial and Domestic, and Industrial, with five finalists in each and the contestants will face two full days of tasks and chal-lenges designed to test their skills and abilities.

Challenge organiser Colin Tilley said: “Given the num-ber of entrants and the high level of achievement re-quired, it is unusual to have brothers in the final – we are sure it will add an even more exciting element to an already highly competitive environment.”

Mr Tilley said that the fi-nalists in the industrial cat-egory will each face with six workstations and have two hours to complete a range of tough tasks, designed to rep-

licate a ‘real industry’ setting and applying the latest avail-able technology.

All the contestants were still apprentice electricians, mostly final year, when they took part in the regional heats. They combined on-job training with their em-ployer with off-job train-ing with Electrical Training Company Limited (ETCO).

The brothers are both fi-nalists in the Industrial cat-egory. Jordan, 24, works for Dalton Electrical Co Ltd in Auckland, while Jonathan, 21, is with Pacific Steel in Auckland. The winners in each category will win about $10,000 worth of prizes and the title of Electrical Appren-tice of the Year.

before her 18th birthday. Service to St John is something that runs in Lucy’s family, her sister Katie was awarded Cadet of the Year in England, and her other sister Amy was also involved in the organisation, while their grandmother was also part of St John.

Lucy hopes to put her medical training and St John knowledge to good use in her future career, as she continues study towards becoming either a paramedic or a midwife.

this award because it is re-lated to the commercial photography work that I do which is property and real estate photography,” says Aliah.

She also won five Bronzes in Travel, Commercial and Photojournalism Categories, with her best results in Pho-tojournalism getting three bronzes.

On the international front, two of her images were also recently accepted in the 12th Virtual Image Photo Exhibi-tion in Buenos Aires, Argen-tina.

One of the images, another photojournalism image was awarded an Honorable Men-tion in this competition and an image of a Hamadryas baboon was accepted in the Nature Category.

Waiuku’s Ken Letcher was designated a Paul Harris Fellow at a Waiuku Rotary meeting re-cently, in recognition of his services to his com-munity, his vocation, and as someone whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the ob-jectives and mission of The Rotary Foundation,

The Paul Harris Fellow is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary over 100 years ago. The Rotary Foundation is one of the largest and most important programs of Rotary. Ken, who moved to Waiuku in 1970 has been involved in teaching as a career for many years, and has now retired from the profession. He has set an example for many by his contributions to his commu-nity in many ways.

Ken was instrumental in setting up the Rotary Primary School speech contest which has been operating now for 26 years. Another of Ken’s achievements is the Waiuku Primary School Music fes-

tival which is held each year. As one of the speakers said, “His personal involve-

ment makes our community a better place in which to live.”

The Probus Club of Waiuku is another ex-ample of the way Ken works quietly in the community. This was an initiative of Ken’s and now has over 100 members. The Ro-tary club of Waiuku recognises these efforts and has made a contribution to the Rotary Foundation in Ken’s name. This contribution could provide educa-

tional opportunities, food for the poor, pota-ble water in a village in Africa or India, health care, shelter, schools and books for thou-sands of children.

It can buy cows to supply milk to an entire village or supply sewing machines to widows so they may become self sufficient.

President Don Wills presented Ken with the two emblems of a Paul Harris Fellow; a cer-tificate and a lapel pin. The symbolism in the presentation was to say “Thank you Ken, for making a difference in your community.”

To celebrate its 20th birthday, Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum is planning on partying with the public – both on and off the water – for this coming weekend, August 17 and 18. Volunteers and some Friends of the Museum have compiled a ‘20 Treasures: 20 Years’ trail which traverses the galleries. Each ‘treasure’ has a significant role in our maritime history, and has its own story to tell.

Meanwhile on the water the scow Ted Ashby, Voyag-er’s Tall Ship, the Brigantine Breeze and New Zealand’s smallest steam tug SS Puke will be sailing. Three other vintage steam boats – Zeltic, Victoria and Kapanui will be on display. For further information call 09 373 0800 or go to www.maritimemu-seum.co.nz

The following items are being held at the Waiuku Police Station af-ter being handed in recently.

From June, there was a ladies windbreaker found at New World.

In July, there was a Sapphire and Diamond Ring found at New World, a Cargo Bag containing womens clothing, found on Norfolk Rise, a set of prescription glasses in a Vista case found on Queen Street, and a ladies small black wallet found on Colombo Road.

In August, police have been hand-ed a black and white ladies wallet, and a scooter found at Karioitahi Beach.

Central Waiuku businesses are asking questions of Auckland Coun-cil after uncollected rubbish was set alight in the town square on Friday night. Businesses near the plaza spoke with the Post on the weekend and said they were concerned for their premises if late-night revellers were setting light to bags left behind by council contractors. It is believed CCTV footage of the town centre may show those responsible, and Waiuku Police have been notified of the inci-dent.

Pukekohe Community Action Trust (PCA) celebrated two years last week at the Campbell Tyson Centre. The trust runs grief support services, a friendship programme for the over 65s, known as the Selwyn Centre, and groups for parents with children, in-cluding one to help first-time moth-ers cope with the demands of a first baby. The trust has support from across the community but was initi-ated by St Andrew’s Anglican Church.

It all started in 1997 with an Op-Shop, the proceeds of which are poured into the community. Church members, members from other churches and people from the com-munity help run this Op-Shop that makes around $12,000 a year. The community services just grew and grew: help for first time parents, help for parents with small chil-dren, providing grief support to chil-

dren through local schools and after school programmes, as well as an op-portunity for seniors to get together, share lunch, do exercises and make new friends.

When it became clear there were more needs than people or money to fill these from within the church, St Andrew’s set up the Community Ac-tion Trust to enable the community to support and participate in these services.

Anne Bolton, the special education and needs coordinator of Pukekohe’s Hill School said it was a privilege to be able to host the Seasons grief sup-port programme at the school. She said sometimes kids refer themselves to the programme, others come via family members, teachers, the school

or even other kids who suggest they might benefit from it. The hour-long programme takes place during a morning, a precious time in teaching, but the support of the teaching staff is such they are happy to accommodate this, as they can see the huge benefit to the children involved.

Local Seasons coordinator Debra Wilcox says the children are very keen to participate in Seasons. “We take them on a journey of self discovery and growth,” she says about the work.

The Trust also has help for children who struggle with a life-threatening illness in their life.

There are lots more plans, because there are a lot more needs. If you want to help, would like more information or want to participate in any of the activities the Trust runs, contact them via PO Box 338, Pukekohe 2340, or ph Jan Wallace 027 452 1366.

LOCAL LOCALLOCALLOCAL&Caltex GlenbrookCaltex Glenbrook

Excellence in service, gas bottle fills, workshop and

fuel discountsIt’s almost five years since Deepak and

Rebecca took over the Caltex Glenbrook, and they say a combination of excellent cus-tomer service, LPG bottle fills, workshop for all mechanical repairs and forecourt service has seen the service station prove popular with locals.

Asked what he thinks makes the locals so supportive of the station, Deepak says it’s the total focus on customer service that they and their staff have initiated.

“It’s a great community,” he adds, “we get to know our customers and they know us and our team. We really enjoy being part of the community.”

While the service is undoubtably part of the attraction, the competitive petrol prices are also seeing customers flock to the sta-tion, just a few kilometres from Waiuku.

AA Smartfuel Cards are popular with cli-ents as they can save a further 6c per litre with purchases of $40 or more off fuel.

The LPG refill service is another drawcard, as Deepak says the Caltex is the only station in the local area to fill bottles, rather than swapping them offering a big advantage for people that can now fill the bottles any time we are open, and as refills are more econom-ical as compared to swapping bottles.

Customer service is a real focus for Rebec-ca and Deepak and that’s a belief shared by staff member Nena, who has been with them since the start.

“I like my customers, and I love my boss-es, she laughs, “I have great customers and, having been born and raised in Waiuku, I know most of the locals. We’ve got a great team here and it’s a lot of fun.”

Deepak says the next stage of the develop-ment of the business will be to renovate and refurbish the shop part of the station, at the site within the next few months along with adding additional facilities for the local com-munity.

The station frequently holds promotions, and the current one is a chance to win a black Forza scooter, (pictured right), with an entry into the draw with every purchase of $60 or more.

The extended hours that the Caltex is open, (5am to 8pm weekdays and 6.30am to 7.30pm on weekends and holidays), has proved popular with people needing war-rant of fitnesses, or general vehicle repairs.

Qualified mechanic Gary Stutt, who is a local hails from Clarks Beach, took over op-erations of the workshop in January. With 18 years experience in vehicle repairs, Gary says he has seen the business growing steadily in the past few months.

“The previous mechanic Graham Thom-was well known and respected in the local community had been here for 19 years, “The word seems to be getting around though, as we have had a lot more of the locals booking in and we’re actually pretty busy at the mo-ment,” Gary says.

“Because the Caltex is open from 5am through the week, it’s ideal for people drop-ping their cars off before work, and then we can get their service or warrant done and they can collect it on their way home. It’s very handy especially for shift workers at the Steel Mill.”

The workshop covers general repairs, war-rant checks, maintenance and services as well as cambelts, brakes and regular wear and tear items.

The range of services offered at Caltex Glenbrook, with the extended and devel-oped store, the availability of the workshop and full service forecourt and LPG fills have turned the business into a hub of the local community.

As Deepak and Rebecca say, there’s even more to come and they are enjoying inter-acting and serving the community of Glen-brook and beyond.

Below left: Caltex Glenbrook mechanic Gary Stutt says the ability for clients to drop cars off early and collect them late from the garage is making repairs more convenient for locals.

If you’re in Pukekohe on the weekend of September 20-22, you’ll find a madcap team raising funds for local children. The Where’s Wally team will drive their Stihl Shop Silverdale-sponsored 1959 Pontiac Laurentian for the tenth time in a Variety Mini Bash.

Their orange car with its roof-mounted chainsaw, boot-top rocket, flashing lights and sirens is as big a hit with adults as kids, but it’s their costumes that make them memo-rable. Lanky Peter Leish-man, his wife Judy and their daughter Dana plus Power Parts man Bernie Duff dress up in the in-stantly recognisable red-and-white striped shirts and round black glasses.

But there’s a serious side to the mayhem. “We

just love making a difference to kids who need a hand, and their families,” Pete says. “It makes you realise how lucky you are with your own kids.”

Judy says the ‘Bash’ is a bit of a family, too. Everyone does their own fund-raising through the year before meeting the Bash crew for a twice-yearly dona-

tion run. Next month they’ll be seeing the Waikato and Franklin areas, calling in at schools to make donations, and shaking a donation bucket in Pukekohe before taking kids with cancer for

a ride round Pukekohe race track.

WAIUKU

A new programme just announced by ACC caught my eye this week, as, for the first time, someone is offering train-ing in a physical activity at which I am already enormously successful.

As an enthusiastic, yet generally in-ept, sportsperson, I have dabbled in virtually every sport going. From rugby to soccer, to table-tennis, to cricket, squash, ice skating, ten-pin bowling, swimming, boxing and long jump, I have a suitcase full of highly commend-ed and hardest-trier awards. I wanted to try water ski-ing, but I couldn’t find a lake with a slope, and I would have taken up water polo but my horse couldn’t swim.

In virtually every sport, my coaches would look sadly at me, and suggest I move into management.

However, last week, ACC announced it is running a series of six-week courses around the Auckland re-gion to teach people how to fall. They say around 280,000 Kiwis injure them-selves in a fall at home every year, plus many people who fall over outside the home.

The statistics also came with this comment: “The reality is, anyone, any-where, at any age can fall.” Really.

Looking at these figures, my initial thought is, as a country, we appear to have conquered falling. What we strug-gle with is staying upright.

I have been falling, creatively and en-thusiastically, for over four decades. In every case I can recall, the combination of my clumsiness and gravity have en-sured I have fallen successfully. I am yet to miss the ground.

ACC says a number of sports (they

cite gymnastics, martial arts and sky diving), already incorporate training on how to fall safely, so they are working out how to teach these techniques to the wider community.

Falling safely in gymnastics is rela-tively easy. They give you a nice springy mat to land on, and if you concentrate on floor exercises you don’t really have that far to fall.

Skydiving, on the other hand, looks to be a differ-ent story.

Luckily, once I have completed the ACC course, I shall be ready to take up skydiving at a mo-ments notice, safe in the knowledge that, should I forget my parachute, I have been fully trained in

how to fall safely. After dropping 30,000 feet onto what

will no doubt (with my luck) be a patch of solid concrete with nails sticking up through it, I shall perform my safe fall-ing routine, then leap gracefully up, thank ACC, and dash back to the plane for another go.

We can save a fortune on playground equipment, once we have trained the kids properly, because we won’t need to build slides. All we will need is the ladder to the top, then our children can leap into the air, let gravity take over, and join the queue for another turn.

And don’t think this initiative is for New Zealanders only. I checked the in-

ternet the other night to see if others were developing these programmes, and a search for ‘learn to fall safely’ re-sults in over 64 million references.

My favourite includes a series of pho-tos demonstrating falling techniques, and a list of instructions to follow while you are in the process of falling. You must turn your head to avoid breaking your nose, but not turn it too far, as this can further damage your neck. Try to remember this on the way down.

The best part was where it suggested (after practise), you can get to a stage where you fall, perform a backward roll, and regain your feet. The site says this is especially important if you are falling as a result of being attacked, and, (I’m not kidding), has a handy link to anoth-er section called ‘how to take a punch’.

The ACC programmes appear to be setting a new, ground-breaking trend for government agencies. It’s a refresh-ing approach, as we have clearly decid-ed as a country we can not stop people from doing things to hurt themselves.

I await with eagerness a new cam-paign from the NZTA on ‘Safer Crash-ing Techniques, a six-week programme on how to miss the apex of the corner and end up in the bushes.’

Perhaps the Alcohol Advisory Board will bring out a video series on ‘Effec-tive Drunkenness - Slurring and Stum-bling for Beginners’, or the Water Safety Council will have a facebook page on ‘Water, floating or sinking - what you’re doing wrong.”

And no doubt the Race Relations Commissioner will issue a group set of pamphlets titled “Fifty simple ways to abuse people based on their colour.”

This would have the added advan-tage that it would also mesh nicely with the already-available video series on ‘How to take a punch.’

Looking at these fi gures, my initial thought is, as a

country, we appear to have conquered falling. What we struggle with is staying upright.

At last, a course designed for the clumsy

One property executive is supporting last week’s Government announcement to help first-home buyers, but says a shortage of housing is still the biggest problem.

Harcourts CEO Hayden Duncan says he is in favour of any policy that makes it easier for first home buyers to enter the market.

However, he believes lack of housing sup-ply and fierce competition is the number one reason some first home buyers struggle.

“Our most recent statistics show across New Zealand there are 12% fewer properties for sale than there were at the same time last year. Auckland (-10.2%) and Christchurch (-22.6%) remain the worst affected.

“This shortage of available housing is driv-ing prices up and making it more difficult for those not already in the property market.”

However, Mr Duncan says statistics also show the number of people buying homes for the first time has not significantly re-duced over the past two years.

Harcourts conducts a post transaction sur-vey to map trends demonstrated by vendors and purchasers. The results are cumulated

and allow for monthly and yearly compari-son. The survey reveals in 2011 a total of 27.1% of buyers were making a first home purchase, compared with 25.4% so far in 2013.

This indicates first time buyers are still en-tering the property market in good numbers, Mr Duncan says.

“A first home buyer will struggle to pur-chase in the most popular suburbs, for ex-ample the inner suburbs of Auckland. What we are seeing is people widening the scope of where they will consider living and look-ing further outwards.”

Mr Duncan says low housing stock must be fundamentally addressed by reducing development fees and building costs and speeding up the consents process.

“It’s simple. We don’t have enough houses, particularly in Auckland and Christchurch, to keep up with the demand. We need to make it easier for developers. The change to KiwiSaver and Welcome Home Loans criteria is good news for some, but it is not going to alter the source of the problem.”

Consumer NZ says it is concerned a dis-cussion document released by Telecommu-nications Minister Amy Adams on pricing for wholesale ultra-fast broadband (UFB) and copper.

The group says the document contained three options, all of which would see the price of copper much higher than the Com-merce Commission is recommending.

“Not only is this bad news for consumers who will now be further subsidising the roll-out of UFB, it is also particularly concerning that the Government would over-rule the Commerce Commission, which is suppos-edly the independent regulator”, said Con-sumer NZ CEO Sue Chetwin.

She says the roll-out of UFB was meant to

compete with copper services so that con-sumers would have choice.

That choice was expected to be for cheap-er copper and slower services or more ex-pensive UFB with better quality and faster services on offer.

“However, the Government has suc-cumbed to pressure from Chorus, which suc-cessfully tendered for most of the country’s UFB roll-out and was planning to use high copper prices to pay for it”, Chetwin said.

“Effectively today’s announcement means ordinary New Zealanders will be subsidising Chorus and its shareholders.”

Consumer NZ will be joining Internet NZ and the Telecommunications Users Associa-tion in opposing the proposals.

The Waiuku Scout Troop held the Great Gurnard Grab recently on the Manukau Harbour.

This event raised $1200 towards the cost of their Scouts attending the 20th NZ Jamboree in Feilding at the end of this year. There were 74 anglers on the day and although there was not a mas-sive bounty there were some big fish weighing in by the time all the keen an-glers returned to base.

Darren Whyte’s Gurnard took top spot in the Open section with 1.25kg and Ethan Poppelbaum’s Gurnard took out the Junior section with his fish weighing 1.05kg.

The Troop had a fantastic response from their sponsors, which meant there were lots of prizes and raffle items. Sponsors for the event are listed un-der the Public Notices section in this edition. As the troop says, without the support of sponsors this event would not have been possible.

And the fundraising doesn’t stop there. There are more sausage sizzles coming and also a car wash planned for the spring time. The troop thanks all the people who supported them by buying tickets and turning up on the day.

View Road School students Tremayne Rob-ertson, (pictured above), his sister Payton, and their cousin Serenity Thompson have been busy selling gingerbread horses to raise funds for Riding for the Disabled. Serenity’s Mum Celena saw a link about a baking campaign for NZRDA and thought of the kids’ cousin Max Thompson-Bailey, of Whangarei, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and is a member of Riding for the Disabled. The project then turned into even more of a family affair when the kids’ grandma, Trish Thompson received the fundraising pack and began baking. The youngsters decorated them and sold them outside Trish’s house, as well as taking orders at View Road School. Trish, Tremayne and Pay-ton’s mum had to bake more biscuits because the kids sold out. Altogether they raised a whopping $152, and View Road School Princi-pal Cris Hull said she can see a great business-man coming into this world. The family thank the local community for their great support.

Ethan Poppelbaum won the Child’ssection of the Great Gurnard Grab.

The Patumahoe and Mauku areas are among the most historic communities in the Franklin region, and Patumahoe Village is garnering a reputation far and wide for providing somewhere special for a day trip or a shopping expedition. With quirky old buildings, many links to colonial develop-ment and abundant natural vistas, Patumahoe is blending modern development with a striking sense of identity, and a number of speciality stores. Future growth predictions for the area are staggering, and a strong local developmentassociation is maintaining its past, while providing ample opportunities for new business and ideas.

Patumahoe area gets $80,000a year to foster local identity

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew has announced that eight new community development projects around the country will be supported with over $1.9 million of funding from the Community De-velopment Scheme.

One of the schemes includes funding to develop and preserve a local sense of iden-tity in the Patumahoe area.

“The Community Development Scheme supports communities which are working to generate their own solutions to local issues, and aspiring to become more self-reliant and resilient,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“The scheme focuses on community-driven and based projects that enable com-munities to work together in new ways, to be innovative and to determine their own development priorities in order to achieve sustainable community outcomes.

“An example is Patumahoe Primary School, which will be funded to lead initiatives aim-

ing to strengthen and preserve the local sense of identity. In the first year this will include reinstating the community newslet-ters, expanding the community website and holding workshops on local environmental issues.”

Rotorua Community Youth Centre will re-ceive funding from the scheme for a project that aims to connect young people with old-er members of the community, to encourage learning by younger people and help older people remain connected and engaged with the community.

The other six projects that will receive funding are being led by Helensville Dis-trict Health Trust, Counties Manukau Sport Foundation, Te Ora Hou Te Tairwhiti Trust, Prison Fellowship New Zealand, YMCA of South and Mid Canterbury and Grey Dis-trict Council. Each of the eight projects will receive funding of $80,000 plus GST per year for three years.

A quad bike that doesn’t roll is one of the finalists in the New Zealand leg of the 2013 James Dyson Award.Supported by the James Dyson Foundation and Brit-ish Council New Zealand, the design award is run in 18 countries. Auckland designer, Nick Marks has cre-ated the Tahr Quad; a bike designed specifically for farming. It uses a completely different suspension and chassis system in combination with intelligent computer technology to prevent four wheel vehicles from rolling. The 24 year old designer from Torbay, Auckland designed an automatic balancing system, which borrows its principle from two-wheel bikes which lean into corners. Internally it gyrates and shifts the bike’s mass and lowers its centre of gravity, stabilising the vehicle and rider. All four wheels are designed to maintain contact with the terrain.

The AA says the government’s decision to implement changes to the Warrant of Fitness regime will save motorists at least $160 million a year.

Next year the government will introduce changes to the system in two phases that will see light vehicles registered from 1 January 2000 requiring an annual WoF check while cars less than three years old will not need a WoF at all.

Currently cars, motorcycles, caravans and trailers older than six years require a new WoF every six months but on 1 January 2014 the first phase of the new WoF system will be-gin which will see cars first registered anywhere in the world between 2004 and 2008 requiring a WoF every 12 months.

Light vehicles first registered between 2000 and 2003 will be eligible for a 12 month WoF from 1 July 2014. Those reg-istered before 1 January 2000 will continue to require a WoF every six months. Following an initial inspection, new cars will not require a WoF for three years.

The 2013-2014 Summer Season at Hampton Downs will blast off over the week-end of September 28 and 29 with the BNT V8 Super-Tourers battling out the first round of their endurance season supported for the first time by classes from the New Zealand Racing Drivers League.

The Counties Manukau Steelers have signed Chiefs hooker Hika Elliot and new outside back Sione Molia.

Steelers’ coach Tana Umaga said “Hika’s leadership and ex-perience will be highly valued by our team especially with key players Tim Nanai-Williams and Mahonri Schwalger out. We are fortunate to have someone of Hika’s calibre available to us at this late stage.”

Hika Elliot is looking forward to his new challenge “I am looking forward to a new environment and passing on my knowledge to the forward pack and the team.”

Nineteen year old Sione Molia from the Karaka Club has been bought in as a replacement for Tim Nanai-Williams who is recovering from a groin operation. Molia is rapt with his opportunity to wear the red, black and white jersey. “I have grown up looking up to these boys and now I am playing with them and consider myself lucky to have a head coach like Tana,” said Sione.

With a proven track record of fostering talent Umaga said “Sione is a young player coming through that we have had our eye one and now he has been given an opportunity. We think he is up to it and we will keep growing him.”

The Steelers 2013 ITM Cup campaign officially kicks off on Thursday night in Wellington. They will also host Tasman, Taranaki, Waikato and Southland at ECOLight Stadium.

The matches against Taranaki and Waikato will see after-noon rugby back at the Stadium with both of those games kicking off at 2.35pm during the weekend.

A reader has nominated Sam, ‘Waiuku’s Cattle whisperer’ as our Wow award winner this week.Sam ,Knight and Dickey cattle truck driver, you know your job, you listen and help and you make the cattle loading a process as easy as possible. ank you and keep up the good work.

Despite a season which finished with a one-point semi-final loss for Waiuku’s Premier Rugby, the club enjoyed a well-patronised prizegiving recently, with some outstanding players honoured.

In the Premiers, Shane Hemi was awarded most improved, Michael Burch was named the team person of the year, and the coveted player of the year title went to Sam Cole, after a season in which he also brought up his 100th game for the red and greens.

The Premier Reserves most improved was Dylan Neil, with Michael Goldfinch collecting the team player award, and Reihania Tapo was named player of the year.

The Under-21s, who had a tough season with a com-bined, and very young, team, played some great football at times, and Max Andrew col-lected the most improved award, with Nick Murdock taking out the team person of the year title, while the

player of the year was named as Matt Leider.

The overall club prizes went to Tom Halse as the highest pointscorer, with Jamie Baker collecting the award for the player with the most potential.

The newly-introduced Loyalty programme saw Mi-achael Baird (Premiers), Axel Couper, (Reserves), Aaron Yuill (Under-21s), picking up prizes, while Aaron Capes picked up the ‘on the night’ prize.

The Supporters Club ma-jor prizes went to Dariaus Timiiti ($1000), Axel Coup-er ($750), Mike Goldfinch, ($500), Jamie Baker, ($200), and Luke Graham, ($100).

The team behind the scenes were also honoured, with Gary Prescott named Club Person of the Year, Sharnie Hunter Supporter of the Year, (husband Gary Hunter received the stirrers award), Bruce Thomson was named for services to the club, and the Supporters Club personality of the year was Jack Laing.
