An Extended Book Review From the Desk of Dr. McKim

Background: During my recent time away giving a paper at the conference of Christianity and Literature in Santa Barbara, I stayed at the Mount Calvary Monastery, which is operated by the Order of the Holy Cross. This is an order of Benedictine Monks within the Anglican Church. This was a valuable time spiritually, which allowed opportunity for prayer, reflection and reading, and indeed learning some uncomfortable but reflection and reading, and indeed learning some uncomfortable but important things about myself. Every day I joined the monks and other guests in at least one and sometimes two of the daily offices (worship services). Protestant Christians have often been critical of the concept of religious orders, whether of monks or nuns. Some of the concerns expressed by the Protestant Reformers in the 16th century were, I believe, valid. There were many examples of wealthy monastic orders, whose members were more interested in luxurious, even grossly immoral living than matters spiritual. These are rare problems today. The medieval church taught that being a priest or a member of an order was medieval church taught that being a priest or a member of an order was

the world but I could not concur with the underlying tone of the criticism that, somehow, prayer, is less important than other activities! And again, today, very few orders are cloistered or strictly contemplative. For example, the Mount Calvary monastery at which I stayed has as its major work providing retreat opportunities and spiritual direction for those who come seeking a closer connection with God.

Who are the Benedictines? Benedictines are named after St. Benedict, who lived from 480-583. His major writing is called The Rule comprising seventy-three short chapters, much of which has to do with how to live a Christ centered life. Benedict lived long before the split between Eastern (Eastern Orthodox) and Western (Roman Catholic) Christianity and long before the split in Western Christianity between Roman Catholics and Protestants. Perhaps it should be no great surprise then that there are Benedictine orders and houses which are Protestant (notably Anglican and Lutheran),. Roman houses which are Protestant (notably Anglican and Lutheran),. Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and a few which are ecumenical, including monks from all Christian denominations. Some orders are strictly for men, others strictly for women. Many include of both genders that maintain a relationship with a particular house or order, and use the Rule of St. Benedict as a guide for living daily life.

The Book Review Monk Habits for Everyday People: Benedictine Spirituality for Protestants was written by Dennis Okholm, professor of theology at Azusa Pacific was written by Dennis Okholm, professor of theology at Azusa Pacific

s a description of his experience, as an evangelical Protestant, of learning from the Benedictine tradition. It is, Okholm lays out in a clear way the particular emphases which characterize Benedictines:

Real Life: efficiency,

real life is counter-culture life which is focused on Jesus Christ. Patience: Benedict insisted that becoming a mature Christian takes

12

Patience: Benedict insisted that becoming a mature Christian takes time and lots of it. There is no such thing as some secret, magic, fast technique for becoming a spiritually fit Christian any more than there is any fast, short cut to being physically fit. John Calvin defined the process of becoming a spiritually mature Christian in terms of

other words becoming what we were originally intended to be and stripping away everything else.

Learning to Listen: appropriate the gospel in such a way that every moment of life is lived in conscious awarenthat, we need to learn to listen to God, instead of the secular culture which surrounds us. At Mount Calvary, for instance, Scripture readings were always followed by a period of complete silence listening for God. Poverty: Fully professed Benedictines own nothing personally

have nothing to learn. Following Jesus, St. Benedict insisted that we own nothing. Everything, including our own lives belongs ultimately to God and are on loan to us. Greed a desire for more and more

Those trying to live according to Benedictask themselves whether any particular item we intend to purchase will serve the Kingdom of God. Do I want this because everyone has one? Because it is the newest and grandest? To impress others? one? Because it is the newest and grandest? To impress others?

St. Benedict was steeped in

Scripture. Humility: -

assessment of one s abilities and talents. Hospitality: Benedict, in The Rule, wrote that every guest who

presented him/herself at a monastery was to be received as Christ Himself. If this sounds vaguely familiar, it should! Jesus Himself spoke in Matthew 25 about those who gave food to the hungry,

13

spoke in Matthew 25 about those who gave food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, welcomed strangers, gave clothing to the naked, visited the sick and imprisoned as doing these things TO HIM, and those who failed to do these things were failing to do these things TO HIM. But what does this have to do with those of ulive in monasteries whifind most irritating about practising Benedictine hospitality when it

Page 15: A Place To Belong - First Baptist Church Reginafirstbaptistregina.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/June-1...A Place To Belong Sunday, June 1st, 2014 11:00 a.m. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH Welcome

In the spirit of Benedictine hospitality, I used to make a simple request e today whom I can

with a growling stomach. It got to the point that I could not pray this prayer with sincerity - unless I was in greater control of my encounters with guests. And that is precisely the point: the stranger at our gate is as unpredictable in his appearance as Christ. To top it at our gate is as unpredictable in his appearance as Christ. To top it off this stranger is often the kid who irritates me the most, yet the one whom I must envision as Christ. That often takes not only

must not let my schedule, or meetings or whatever get in the way of people, in whom I am to see Jesus. Perhaps it is especially in the irritating, demanding people, I am to look for Jesus. Stability and Community: A Benedictine monk or nun promises to

to do with the vast majority of Christians w or nuns? to do with the vast majority of Christians w or nuns? Plenty, as it turns out, especially for evangelical Protestants. We have a pronounced tendency to church hopping. If something

leadership takes a different approach, if someone rubs me the wrong way, if the then off I go to find another church. This behaviour would have been completely incomprehensible to the early Christians in the Book of Acts. They understood that the only way a person was going to grow and mature in following Jesus was to stay with the group of

14

to grow and mature in following Jesus was to stay with the group of Christians where God had put them. Balance: This one really got me, because my life is often anything

but balanced. St. Benedict insisted that we need to have balance in our lives, giving due attention to body, mind and soul. Too much or too little of anything is unhealthy.

One reason that Benedictines pray several offices every single day is to ensure that they are attending to the spiritual life. As Okholm puts it, -do list for the day and

While some Biblical authors may have thought of the universe in this way, this does not discount the truth of the ascension. What ultimately happened was that Jesus returned to the Father, to a reality that is outside of space and time. No one today is going to suggest that Jesus lifted off and then just kept moving up beyond the atmosphere of the earth, into space and then kept going until someplace He eventually encountered heaven. Heaven is beyond our space and time it is another dimension entirely. But since we humans live within space-time and think of reality in terms of space and time how else could and think of reality in terms of space and time how else could the ascension have begun but in a way which involved space and time in order to make sense to the disciples? And after all,

took Jesus out of the disciples

Ascension Day Customs and Foods From the Desk of Dr. McKim Over the centuries many customs have developed connected with celebrating the Ascension. In Europe, many churches hold outdoor processions with torches and banners; one hold outdoor processions with torches and banners; one version in England includes a banner with a lion in the front and a banner with a dragon at the triumph over Satan. Some churches, particularly in Italy, even recreate the ascension by lifting a statue of Jesus from the altar through a hole in the roof of the church. In Sweden, Ascension Day is called Kristi Himmelsfardsdag. In southern

morning) picnic church service to hear the first birds sing. (Our senior minister, who many of you know is NOT a morning person thinks this is a particularly awful custom!) In central Europe Ascension Day often involves people climbing a hill or mountain where a worship service and picnic may be held, sometimes at the foot of the mountain where a worship service and picnic may be held, sometimes at the foot of a statue

Page 19: A Place To Belong - First Baptist Church Reginafirstbaptistregina.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/June-1...A Place To Belong Sunday, June 1st, 2014 11:00 a.m. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH Welcome

depicting the ascended Jesus. Perhaps the oddest customs of all are those observed at Lincoln College, Oxford University. A lunch is provided for students and faculty which includes

who attend. Supposedly during a riot Lincoln College admitted several Lincoln students to the safety of the college, but left a Brasenose student outside to the mercy of the mob. The provision of free beer became an annual act of penance. After the lunch, students climb to the top of the gatehouse tower and begin throwing heated pennies at the children gathered and begin throwing heated pennies at the children gathered below. (Unfortunately we were unable to undertake this custom as would find no one willing to wander around our church roof carrying hot pennies. Also the penny no longer exists in Canada.) This is intended as a moral lesson in the dangers of greed. The children rush about gathering the hot pennies aided by the thick gloves that the children alert to the tradition wear for the occasion. The day concludes when the Lincoln College Choir sings various hymns and airs from the gatehouse tower of the college, to the enjoyment of the the gatehouse tower of the college, to the enjoyment of the Lincoln students assembled below and the likely puzzlement of passing tourists.

Various foods have been associated with Ascension Day. For German Christians, the Ascension is often marked by a picnic. In the area of Mansfeld, there is even a special drink Ascension beer for the day. Armenians traditionally

celebrated by making a big pan of Dolmas. This is a special dish which uses the new leaves of the grape vine, stuffed with a delicious filling. In parts of France on Ascension Day,

18

with a delicious filling. In parts of France on Ascension Day, children go from door to door begging for flour to make Beignets de Pommes (a kind of apple fritter.) In some areas, the main course of the day is fish apparently following the Swedish custom of Ascension Day being the first day for angling.
