October 2019 Its hard to believe it is already October! We have had a fantasc start up to our school year, and I would like to thank our staff and student leaders for all their efforts in making sure all our students feel welcome at Murdoch MacKay! September was a busy month, with our students new to the building having an opportunity to see all the amazing acvies that take place at Murdoch! We were happy to welcome our school community on Thursday, September 19 for our Meet the Teacher Night! We had a fantasc turnout with over 400 families aending! It was great to meet and speak with so many parents. I hope everyone had the opportunity to meet with teachers and receive informaon about your students learning this year. If you do have any quesons, please feel free to call us and we will be happy to help. We also celebrated our 2018-2019 Undergraduate Awards that evening! The sheer number of award winners pays tribute to the hard work out students and staff undertake every day! During our first few weeks of school we have encouraged students to get involved with student life at Murdoch. We know that by having students connected to our building they will achieve greater success and anxiety will be lessened. Its not too late to join clubs, so if you havent yet, make sure you listen to our announcements for more opportunies! One of the most important things that you can do to help students prepare for a successful school year is to remind them what great learners do. Great learners do not give up when they are faced with things they dont know or cant do immediately. When differences are explored between countries where children excel in school, researchers oſten noce that successful students persist when met with challenges. Culturally we are programed to swoop in and rescueour children when we see them struggling. One of the best ways to develop selfconfidence and resilience is through wrestling with a difficult problem. Even Einstein once said, Its not that Im so smart; its just that I stay with problems longer.Tenacity and determinaon need to be celebrated and are skills that will serve your children well throughout their lives. This year we will be inving parents in to our building on a regular basis to help share what a day at Murdoch is like. Our first evening held was with our sTeam parents. The sTeam program is available for Grade 10 and 11 students, and gives them the opportunity to learn tradional subjects through hands on exploraon. Research has shown that learning in this manner helps students gain a beer understanding of content, and allows them to apply it to a number of situaons. We had a great evening of exploraon and parents gained a beer understanding of this unique program. Stay tuned for more evenings where Murdoch will open it s doors to parents! It is my pleasure to consider myself a part of the Murdoch MacKay Collegiate learning community and it is with much ancipaon that I look forward to working together with all of you in the year ahead. We hope you and your children enjoy a wonderful year. Mr. B. Straub, Principal A NEW SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS

The Construction Safety Association of Manitoba came by Murdoch MacKay, to put on a safety presentation for our Vocational and Industrial Arts students on October 3rd. They showed students the importance of using the proper safety gear/equipment. Students were shown how to correctly lift objects. The demonstration also showed the amount of unnecessary pressure we put on our back by doing it incorrectly. The demonstration finished off with the importance of wearing the proper fall arrest safety gear when working on heights. It was an eye opening experience for all, with great student engagement!

Welcome to the Library Learning Commons

Our library space is undergoing some renovations this year! Over the summer we

brought in some new laptops and whiteboard top tables. We also upcycled our soft

seating and have made some rearrangements to the seating space we have

available. Why the renovations? We are making the transition to a 21st century li-

brary model, a learning commons! The purpose behind the transition is to create a

central space within our school that is a learning hub. Students have access to

resources, including technology, digital resources, and print resources. The space is

being designed with 21st century learning skills in mind, focusing on collaboration,

creative and critical thinking, and innovation.

The changes made over the summer are the start of our transition, we will be adding in more for students as we go! We are very

excited to provide students with new resources and opportunities to extend their learning outside the classroom space. The

library learning commons is open for students from 8:00 am to 3:45pm, we are looking forward to seeing everyone come in!

Some new additions in our collection to look for are:

The Beauty of the Moment – Tanas Bhathena

One of us is lying – Karen M. McManus

Shadow and Bone – Leigh Bardugo .... Check out the whole trilogy, we’ve got them available!
