PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the Term 4, Week 1 Newsletter. I hope everyone had a happy and

safe holidays and enjoyed the chance to get out of routine. Today Miss Arbon takes over teaching the Reception/Year 1 Class for the remainder of the year. I am sure that she will work well with the class and continue to maintain the good routines and work expectations that were set during the year. This Thursday afternoon and evening, I will be attending the Farewell celebrations for Bishop Greg O’Kelly. He has served the Pt Pirie diocese as Bishop for 14 years. Previously he had been the Chairman of the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools and has been a headmaster of Catholic schools for three appointments. He has had a long and distinguished career and he will be honoured and acknowledged for his contributions. Please keep Bishop Greg O’Kelly in your thoughts and prayers. There is plenty of events taking place this term. See below for further details. ST JAMES SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY—REMINDER St James School will have a school closure day this Friday 16th October. Staff will be taking part in a Religious Faith Formation Day.

GALA DAY LITURGY AND ACTIVITIES In Religious Education, for the first four weeks of the term each class will focus on the topic of Missions. This is about how the Catholic tradition has a focus on the dignity of the human person and the preferential treatment of the poor. This includes looking after and providing care and assistance to those who need it most. Part of this work is about understanding the bible stories about this and the actions we can do as a school community to look after the poor and disadvantaged. Each class will attend a Liturgy at 12:30 to pray together. After lunch the liturgy will be followed by Gala Day Fundraising activities , which will be run by each class. Parents are most welcome to attend these activities. More information will be sent home in the coming days about this. STUDENT TEACHER The Yr 2/3 Class will be fortunate to have a student teacher working in their class this term. Miss Wadlow will have two placement days this week from 14th October followed by a placement from 19th October to 11th November. We look forward to working with Miss Wadlow. BOOK WEEK The annual Book Week celebrations will take place next week. This is an important week to celebrate as we love to promote a love of reading. Being in a habit of reading and having a love a reading helps children to succeed with their learning. Each class will have a display in the Learning Centre next week. The Book Week Parade will take place next Monday 19th October. We look forward to seeing the students dressed up in their favourite book character.

On the grace filled occasion of your First Reconciliation,

may you discover the peace and the amazing love of God’s forgiveness.

FIRST RECONCILIATION PARENT/CANDIDATE MEETING- Tuesday 20th October at 6.00pm FIRST RECONCILLIATION- Tuesday 3rd November 6.00pm

GOSPEL VALUE: RELIABILITY For Weeks 1, 2 and 3 of this term, we have a focus on the Gospel value of reliability.

"Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord, we have an everlasting rock.” (Isaiah 26:4)

Some ways that we can be reliable: Keep your promises, manage the expectations that others have of you, don’t leave people waiting, whatever you do - do it well, be consistent and finish what you start. CANONISATION ANNIVERSARY This Saturday marks the 10 year anniversary of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop’s canonisation back on October 17th, 2010 at Saint Peter’s Basilica, Rome by Pope Benedict XVI. Mary’s canonisation has proved to be a powerful impetus for many of the world’s people in their efforts to recognise God in all of creation and especially those of the human family who are dispossessed and marginalised. GALA DAY- CATHOLIC MISSIONS LITURGY The month of October is known as Mission Month for Catholic Missions. During this time we aim to fundraise money to assist Catholic Missions with a focused project in a particular country in need. Our annual fundraiser is our always highly successful Gala Day. This year we will hold our Day on Friday *** October (Week 2)– Our Gala Day will begin with a Liturgy hosted by the 4/5 class, to be held in the Church at 12.30pm. This will lead into lunch time and our annual Gala Day activities run by the children (from 1.10-2.30pm). Don’t forget to collect all your ‘coins’ and bring them in on the day! All families and friends of the school community are welcome to attend one or both of these events. We would love to see you there. There will be a plethora of craft, food and game stalls set up, all in aid of raising money for Catholic Missions. The focus country this year for our Missions fundraising is Cambodia, with the theme being ‘For the joy of the Lord is your strength’ (Nehemiah 8:10). The focus country this year is Cambodia and in particular the ‘Arrupe Centre’ which provides for Cambodian children with disabilities. Chen is the face of Mission Month in 2020. Chen is a landmine survivor who lost both his legs when he was 16 years old. Chen has been given the care and opportunity to turn this tragic event around thanks to the Arrupe Centre. The Arrupe Centre has evolved over the past twenty years from a short-term rehabilitation centre to a fulltime home for children with disabilities, whether it be from landmine accidents or from illnesses such as polio. The Arrupe Centre urgently needs support to continue providing young people like Chen with opportunities so they can live a full and dignified life. The Arrupe Centre is just one of many critical initiatives established by the Catholic Church in Cambodia to develop and nourish the country’s must vulnerable people and these projects are what our fundraising will help support.

Many Thanks, Jed Sutter (REC)
