DROP OFF AND PICK-UP TIMES

Thank you again to everyone for your patience and co-operation this week at drop-off and pick-up. The revised KS2 pick-up times on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are working much better so we will continue with those. Please remember the following important points: Please aim to arrive at the time allotted for your year group in the morning and afternoon. If you arrive early

in the morning the relevant member of staff may not be available to receive your child. If you require wraparound care (Breakfast Club, Creche, SG Extra) please book this 72 hours in advance with

Mrs Waring in the School Office [email protected]. Please note we cannot send your child to Creche or SG Extra unless you have pre-booked.

We are sorry for the lack of flexibility regarding wraparound care but this is due to current Covid-19 restrictions. We will continue to review the provision as and when the situation changes.

INSTRUMENTAL TUITION

The music building is now returning to its lively self as we saw the start of instrumental lessons once again. A huge percentage of the school’s population learn an instrument, gaining valuable skills in concentration, perseverance and stamina. We provide many opportunities for players to perform, developing their confidence and resilience - qualities so valuable for all aspects of their life. If your son or daughter would like to try out an instrument - or explore several to help make a choice - please make contact with me on [email protected] and I will be happy to arrange this. Below is a list of the instruments currently taught in school. If the required instrument is not on this list, we will happily source a teacher for it! Flute Clarinet Singing Violin Guitar Piano Saxophone Trumpet Trombone Percussion

Our instrument teachers are keen to demonstrate what their pupils can do: look out for instrument showcases

during Family assemblies in the coming weeks!

Speech, Drama and Communication Qualifications at Spring Grove

Speech and Drama lessons help students to build self-esteem, communication confidence and vocabulary, skills that filter into all aspects of school and home life. They are particularly useful for those who want to improve their speech clarity, positive body language, eye contact, public speaking and performance skills.

At Spring Grove, we offer our students the opportunity to take Speech and Drama accredited examinations which give children the opportunity to develop a range of Communication and Performance skills. As children move up the grades, they build a portfolio of achievement, leading to UCAS points earned at grades 6,7 and 8

Lessons are held weekly, currently with fixed times each week. Lessons are available from Year 2 upwards. Online lessons are available by arrangement with the teacher.

WETSUIT RECYCLING

As a hot summer of staycations comes to an end please remember to save your old and worn out wetsuits for recycling. WETSUITS CREATE 380 TONNES OF NON BIODEGRADABLE WASTE EVERY YEAR. Lorna Doyle is a local designer whose mission is to rescue wetsuits from landfill and transform the material into bags. http://www.lorna-doyle.com/ Lorna will be visiting SG on 21st September to talk to the children about the circular economy, show off her products and collect all the wetsuits we have gathered. Please pass on any old wetsuits to Mr Curnow. Thank you!

FALCONRY CLUB

We are constantly amazed and delighted by the wide range of interests and hoobies amongst our pupils. This week we have news from William R who goes to Falconry Club every Saturday. “Last Saturday at Falconry Club, William learnt about vultures. Here is a photo of him holding Morty, the turkey vulture. Fun fact: they wee and poo on themselves to cool off and as sunscreen! On a more serious note, these scavengers are under threat of extinction in India due to the use of drugs, such as diclofenac in dying livestock. Cows are revered in India and are always looked after, treated for illness and live into old age. When they die, they are left. Normally the vultures would clear up any dead animals, but with their decline in numbers wild dogs have taken over and there is an increase in the spread of diseases. Luckily, in 2007 diclofenac was outlawed in India and their decline has slowed, but other drugs are also proving toxic to vultures. It is sad to think that there were too many vultures to count in India (estimated at 40 million) in the early 1990s and now there are 0.1 to 3% of that number.” If people want to find out more about the effect of vulture decline has had on the ecosystem, health and local economies, the RSPB has a page here - https://www.rspb.org.uk/join-and-donate/donate/appeals/asian-vultures/

Please send us more news of your hobbies and interests out of school!
