Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 25, 2015

THE THEME TODAY IS: CHANGE OUR LIVES Jonah is sent by God to warn the people of Nine-veh to repent. God sees “by their actions” how they have turned from evil. Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that “the world in its present form is passing away.” He calls for a change of heart. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” The apos-tles-to-be abandon their nets and follow him. Thus in all the readings we hear an invitation to a radi-cal and immediate change in our lives. Jonah 3:1-5, 10. The people of Nineveh believed God and turned from their evil ways. 1 Corinthians 7:29-31. The world in its present form is passing away. Mark 1:14-20. This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Are we willing to repent, to make any changes necessary to bring our lives into agreement with God’s will? This is not always easy, but God will give us the grace and strength we need. ------------------------------------------------- EL TEMA DE HOY ES: CAMBIEMOS NUES-TRAS VIDAS Dios envía a Jonás para animar al pueblo de Níni-ve para que se arrepientan. FROM MY HEART (not from my desk) I am very grateful to our community of Jóvenes Para Cris-to, who sold delicious food in Café San José last week-end. Their ministry is a great blessing for our parish. The money earned from their sale of food will help pay for their next retreat. Clearly, they have brought to our parish food for the body as well as for the soul! Secondly, I want to express gratitude to Ruben Mayorga and Fernando Rico, who helped set up the audiovisual presentation we had during the homily last week. Thanks to their help, everyone could see and hear the wonderful film provided by the Orange Catholic Foundation for this year’s Pastoral Services Appeal. Finally, I express my sincere gratitude to all of you who have made pledges and given contributions to the Pasto-ral Services Appeal. Your response to this appeal is a great sign that you remember: “WE HAVE because GOD LOVES US! WE GIVE because WE LOVE GOD, the CHURCH and ONE ANOTHER!” If you have not made your pledge yet, please do so as soon as possible and bring it to church during Mass, or to the parish office. Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and St. Blaise Blessing of Throats/ - Fiesta de la Pre-sentación del Señor y la Bendición de las Gargantas para el día de San Blas

This year, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord falls on Monday, February 2, which gives us the special opportunity to celebrate this feast at all of our Saturday evening and Sunday Masses that weekend. The feast of the Presentation of the Lord originated in fourth-century Jerusalem. Since at least the eleventh century, it has been the custom of the Church to bless candles on this feast, inspired by the words of Simeon in the Gospel of the day describing the Christ child as "a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel." For this reason, the feast also became known as "Candlemas."

To celebrate "Candlemas" this year at St. Joseph, we will have a blessing of candles at the beginning of all of our Satur-day evening and Sunday Masses the weekend of January 31— February 1. In addition to blessing some of the candles that we will use throughout the year in the church, you are invited to bring candles from home to be blessed. Perhaps you have special candles that you light when you pray at home. Or perhaps you have candles that you light at table for special family meals. Whatever candles you use at home, bring them the weekend of January 31 – February 1 to be blessed as a way of remembering that Christ is always present and sheds his light on our lives, at all times and in all places. Another idea: Purchase all of the birthday candles that you will use in the coming year and bring them to Mass the weekend of January 31- February 1 to be blessed - that way, the light of Christ will be a part of every birthday party!

Some of the candles that will be blessed in our celebration of the Presentation of the Lord will be used at the end of all of our Saturday evening and Sunday Masses the weekend of January 31– February 1 for the St. Blaise Blessing of the Throats. The Memorial of St. Blaise is celebrated on February 3, remembering the Armenian bishop martyred in the ear-ly fourth century. It is said that a mother once brought her son who was choking on a fish bone to St. Blaise, who cured the boy with a prayer and the sign of the cross. From that event developed the practice of the Blessing of the Throats on St. Blaise's Day, with two blessed candles tied together in the form of a cross and applied to the throat along with a pray-er asking God's protection from diseases of the throat and other illnesses.

Este año, la Fiesta de la Presentación Del Señor es el Lunes 2 de febrero. Vamos a celebrar esta fiesta en todas nues-tras Misas el sábado por la tarde y el domingo de ese fin de semana. La Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor se originó en Jerusalén del siglo IV hasta siglo XI, y ha sido la costumbre de la Iglesia bendecir las velas en esta fiesta, inspirado en las palabras de Simeón en el Evangelio del día que describe al Niño Jesús como "luz que alumbra a las naciones y gloria de tu pueblo, Israel ". Por esta razón, la fiesta también se conoció como "Día de la Candelaria".

Para celebrar el Día de la Candelaria este año la Parroquia de San José, tendremos la bendición de las velas en el co-mienzo de todas nuestras Misas el sábado por la tarde y domingo del fin de semana del 31 de enero al 1 de febrero. Además de la bendición de algunas velas que vamos a utilizar durante el año en la iglesia, te invitamos a traer velas de casa para ser bendecidas. Tal vez tienes velas especiales que iluminas cuando oras en casa. O tal vez tienes velas que utilizas en la mesa para las comidas familiares especiales. Pueden traer cualquiera de las velas que usen en casa. Co-mo recordatorio que Cristo está siempre presente y derrama su luz sobre nuestras vidas, en todo momento y en todo lugar. Otra idea: Compren todas las velas de cumpleaños que vas a utilizar en el próximo año y tráelas al Misa el fin de semana del 31 de enero al 1 de febrero para ser bendecidas - de esa manera, la luz de Cristo será una parte de cada fiesta de cumpleaños!

Algunas de las velas que serán bendecidos en nuestra celebración de la Presentación del Señor se utilizarán al final de todas las Misas el sábado en la tarde y el domingo del fin de semana del 31 de enero al 1 de febrero para la Bendición de las Gargantas para el Día de San Blas. El Memorial de San Blas se celebra el 3 de febrero, recordando al obispo armenio martirizado en el siglo IV. Se dice que una madre una vez trajo a su hijo que estaba atragantado con una espi-na de pescado a San Blas, quien curó al muchacho con una oración y la señal de la cruz. Así desarrolló la práctica de la Bendición de las Gargantas el Día de San Blas, con dos velas benditas atadas entre sí en forma de cruz y se aplica a la garganta, junto con una oración pidiendo la protección de Dios a causa de enfermedades de la garganta y otras enfer-medades.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange are hosting an event: MODERN DAY SLAVERY: Addressing the Issue of DEMAND. Human trafficking is driven by demand. As long as there are purchasers for com-mercial sex, there will be victims. It’s even happen-ing in our own backyard. The O.C. Human Traffick-ing Task Force calls Orange County a major stop on the sex trafficking circuit. These young women could be our daughters, nieces, or sisters. So how do we end modern day slavery?
