Warhawk Cross Country 2013 Season Coaching Staff Meet the Warhawks 2012 Recap Record Book This is AUM

The 2013 campaign marks the third year of existence for the Auburn Mont-gomery cross country teams, and with two years of experience, the Warhawks are poised to compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Head coach Michael Gross welcomes back nine runners from a season ago, six on the men’s team and three on women’s. Highlighting the returners for the men is sophomore Zach Sollie, who was AUM’s top fi nisher twice last season and fi nished third of better for the team in all nine meets. Sollie will look to eclipse the 27:30-mark required to qualify for the NAIA National Championship. “Zach had a good summer and worked hard during the off-season,” Gross said. “He has come back in great form. Once we tweak a few things, there is no doubt in my mind that he has the skill set to qualify for the national championship and be a complete runner.” Fellow sophomores Andrew Russell, Shaw Cornelius, Josh Jenkins and Aaron West look to build from strong freshman campaigns. “We have a good core group of sopho-mores returning,” Gross said. “Andrew re-ally made some strides at the end of last year and worked hard this summer. I look for him carry a bigger role with the team this year. Josh showed what he could do last season, so he is also a guy we are expecting big things from. Shaw is a tire-less worker and has continued to improve. Aaron is also a hard worker, but will need

to continue to show improvement.” Junior Adam Russell will continue to provide leadership for a youthful team. “I’m looking for Adam to have a good year, as long as he works on some small things to get himself through some set-backs he had last year,” Gross said. “He has a good work ethic and continuously pushes the group to improve.” For the women, senior Katherine Toy returns for her third season with the pro-gram, following a stellar 2012 season in which she was the top fi nisher in all nine meets. “I’m extremely excited for the season,” Gross said of Toy. “She has been pestered by minor injuries in the past seasons, but has made some adjustments in her form and should be healthy all season. I think if she continues to work hard, she has the ability to qualify for the NAIA National Championship.” Junior Savannah Brown returns after missing last season, while sophomore Raquel Anecito is also back after being the second Warhawk to fi nish in each meet as a freshman. “Savannah has fought through lingering injuries the past two seasons,” Gross said. “She has stayed positive, and if she can stay healthy, she has the potential to help our team.” “Raquel has a strong work ethic, but will need to continue to improve,” Gross added. “I hope her willingness to get bet-ter will take her running to another level this season.” Each team will also welcome a group of talented newcomers to the program. Freshmen Joel Johnson and Mike Bulger will both add depth the men’s squad, but will also be looked upon to be competitive as fi rst-year runners. Johnson, a local run-ner from Montgomery, won the AISA Class 2A State Cross Country Championship last season while running at Eastwood Chris-tian School, while Bulger, who prepped at Prattville High School, won the Warhawk Challenge last year, a 5K road race spon-sored by the AUM women’s basketball program. The women’s team will welcome six new runners to the program. The Warhawks added a veteran runner

in sophomore Sharlie Brooks, who joins the team after spending last season at the University of West Alabama. “Sharlie has the potential to keep pace with Katherine,” Gross said. “If that hap-pens, then come race day, it will make them both better runners. They will be able to push each other.” AUM also welcomed freshman Hol-lyAnn Goble, who was ranked in the top 10 among Alabama High School runners at Susan Moore High School in Blounts-ville, Ala. The Warhawks also welcomed veteran senior runners Caitie Cunningham and Kamesha Strong, both of which spent the last four years with the AUM women’s basketball program, former four-year let-terwinner with the softball team Rachel Stuart and fi rst-year student-athlete Ame-lia Hobson. “Caitie and Kamesha will need to focus on their mechanics and form, but knowing their work ethic, I think both will be able to help us this year,” Gross said. “Rachel is also a hard worker and should be a solid contributor for us as well. Amelia is one of the hardest workers on the team and is a natural runner. She lacks actual race experience, but with a few adjustments to her mechanics, I think she could be in the thick of things on race day.” The ultimate goal of each program in 2013 is to qualify for the NAIA National Championship. The SSAC awards two au-tomatic berths to the national meet, held at the Choctaw Trails in Choctaw, Miss., on November 9.

HEAD COACH MICHAEL GROSS

Michael Gross is entering his third year of coaching cross country at Auburn Montgomery. After originally graduating from AUM with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education in physical education, he now continues build a cross country program at his alma mater. Gross was a distance runner in high school and continues to run for fi tness and fun. For the past few years, he has been on a quest to run a marathon in every state, and he is closing in on that accomplishment. He has also completed ultra-mar-athons of 40 miles and 50 miles. Gross began his teaching career at Brewbaker Primary/Intermediate Schools be-fore returning to AUM as a Teacher-in-Residence in 2004. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Physical Education at Auburn Montgomery to go along with his coaching duties. As a Physical Education Specialist, he had the opportunity to coach children and adolescences in the area of distance running at the public school level. He has

also coached adults as a volunteer with the Leukemia Society’s Team-In-Training program, which helps prepare individu-als to run marathons and half-marathons. In 2010, Gross was selected as the Hometown Hero by the Thunderbirds for his work in helping children understand and develop healthy lifestyle choices. His reward was a fl ight in a Thunderbird F-16. In the process of developing a new cross country program, Gross has set about to recruit athletes based on charac-ter, academics and athleticism, in that order. His philosophy is that character is the only thing that people truly possess and cannot be taken away. Academics are second because the degree that each of his athletes earns will guide their profession, not their running. And athleticism is last, because it is his job to make his runners better. After a slow start to the 2011 season, each team showed a steady improvement throughout the year. Entering the second season of cross country, Gross is excited about the potential of each of the teams. Losing six males and one female from the inaugural teams, he has replaced those athletes with young men and women who will look to help strengthen the program for years to come. Gross grew up in Tallassee, Ala. In addition to his degrees from AUM, he also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in physical education from Auburn University. Gross is married to the former Marcilla Ann Cooper.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH KALEY GLOVER

Kaley Glover joins the Auburn Montgomery coaching staff following a successful cross country and track and fi eld career at University of Montevallo. Glover graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology in 2013. During her career with the Falcons, Glover was named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference team three times. She was recognized as the Peach Belt Conference co-Runner of the Year, and was named 2012 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross County Coaches Association. In 2011, she fi nished fi fth overall in the PBC Championships and fi rst for the team during the NCAA Championship. The following season, Glover fi nished second in the Peach Belt Conference Championships and claimed the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Champion-

ship with a time of 22:40.40. Shortly after, she competed in the NCAA Division II National Championships, where she posted the second-fastest 6K time in school history, fi nishing in 22:33.30. Glover hails from Opelika, Ala. and was a four-time all-state selection in cross country while attending Beauregard High School. She is currently pursuing her master’s in sports management at AUM.

The NAIA approaches sport and ac vity as an opportunity to inten onally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program.
