AS MUCH AS WE LONG FOR SUMMER, it always seems to sneak up on us. But

that’s okay, we’ll deal with it… happily. We hope you’re one of the lucky families

that gets a nice long vacation away, or extra time home with the kids. We all need

that every now and again. Even if you don’t have endless hours to organize the

family’s summer activities, you’ll be happy with the suggestions we made to fill

your summer with meaning, family times, substance, and lots of time at the lake.

The water seems to be a draw for many of us. As a child my family rented cabins

on quaint lakes, and as we got older, we had a camper that we’d pull along,

and I was thrilled to sleep in its hammock. We ran the beach all day, swam, read

books and comic books, listened to music and played board games and cards.

Dinner was buttery corn on the cob and hamburgers hot off the grill, and we’d

seamlessly fall into sleep. With my own three children, we’d do the same. They

didn’t appreciate the cabins sans television as much as I did, but we graduated

to cabins with hot tubs and wifi, and they’d fly kites, build endless sandcastles

and – even though they had such divergent interests – they’d all be at peace at

the beach.

The blessing of our area is the plentitude of cool water and the many crisp clear

lakes and we’ve chosen to spotlight them this issue for you. Laze about and…

ShinesRIGHT HERE IN MARION COUNTY

YOUR SUMMERTIME

ACTIVE ADVENTURESCanyons Zip Line & Canopy Tours Not far from Fesseden Elementary you can experience the longest, highest and fastest zips in Florida... and the longest zips over water in the U.S! While most of Florida spans over flat terrain, Ocala/Marion County is home to massive limestone canyons within a vast wooded wonderland, providing the ideal setting and elevation for an unforget table adventure.

Full tours include nine zip lines, two rope bridges and an exhilarating rappel to lower you back down to ground level. Now that’s the perfect way to zip into summer!

Ocala National Forest Lace up the sneakers and hike through the second largest forest in Florida. Roughly 40 minutes from downtown Ocala, our national forest offers dozens of different hiking trails ranging from half-mile boardwalks to nearly 100 miles of backpacking trails for the experienced naturalist. Plus, there are 100 miles of designated equestrian paths and camping sites, too!

Make sure to stick to the marked trails; this is, after all, the largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest in the world. While in the area, you may want to look for the 45-foot Chapman Oak Tree, located just off State Road 19; it’s the largest of its species in the U.S. and registered as an American Champion Tree.

The Santos Mountain Bike Trails If your family loves adrenaline-filled off-road adventures, these trails are considered the best in the area. Recipient of the prestigious bronze-level Ride Center designation by the International

Mountain Bicycling Association, it’s one

of only six of its kind in the nation!

Riders of all skill levels can find

a fun challenge through the 80

miles of unpaved Santos trails,

with color-coded difficulty levels

ranging from yellow (easy) to red

(extreme). For more experienced

mountain bikers, the Vortex Bike

Trails offer riders a vertical drop

estimated at 20 feet, where riders

can take on higher jumps and more

challenging trails.

The 49th Ave. Trails are another

must-see in the region and are lined with

remnants of historic ship canal “diggings”

that exist today as miniature valleys. For

novice riders, Baseline Trailhead and

Land Bridge Trail offer a more relaxed

experience through Ocala’s pastures

and greenery.

EQUESTRIAN EXPERIENCESLike no place else, Ocala’s equestrian-

focused attractions are abundant, yet

each boasts a one-of-a-kind experience.

With over 70,000 acres of thoroughbred

breeding and training farms, in addition

to 100 miles of horseback riding trails

through the Ocala National Forest and

the Greenway, there’s something for

every equestrian.

If you’re interested in learning more

about the world of equestrian training,

horse farm tours offer guests a behind-

the-scenes look at working horse farms.

Farm Tours of Ocala takes groups on

a three-hour tour exploring three horse

farms in the area, letting spectators get

up close and personal with local legends

and world-class champions, as well

as their trainers and caregivers. Or sit

back and relax

for an hour-long ride with Horse Country

Carriage Company & Tours and explore

the countryside under a canopy of

Spanish moss drenched oaks.

Makin’ Tracks Trail Rides offers

several activities for horse lovers, from

traditional trail rides to swimming and

camping with horses. Riders can also

explore the county’s limestone canyons

carved from the countryside more than

a century ago… on horseback.

If you’d like to do rather than see, trail

rides and riding lessons from BG Trail

Rides at the Florida Horse Park are your

ticket to guaranteed excitement. Grey

Dawn Stables has lessons and adorable

parties available to you and your children,

plus summer camps. Kimberden trains

the UF Equestrian and Trinity Catholic

Equestrian Teams for success and can

train you or your children to ride casually

or professionally; summer camps are

available as well.

SAVE ON GAS, HOTELS AND WANDERLUST WORRY this summer. Whether your down time includes woodland adventures, resting by natural springs, or adrenaline pumping action - there’s plenty to do right here in Marion County! From hiking to biking, horseback riding, canoeing to cooling off, summer is the perfect time to explore what’s right around the corner in your hometown.

WATER PLAYCarney Island Park at Lake Weir Another great recreational area for those looking

for a little bit of everything. Visit the more than 750 acres of sand hill islands, causeways,

wetlands systems and shoreline beaches. This destination offers hiking, swimming, picnic

pavilions, playgrounds and sand volleyball courts fit for the true outdoor enthusiast.

Juniper Springs & Salt Springs Recreation Area There are a handful of natural

springs sprinkled throughout the Ocala National Forest, one of the most popular being

Juniper Springs, located about 28 miles east of Ocala. As you

know, the springs stay at 72° year-round, perfect for our

95°-plus days.

Also popular in the forest is The Salt Springs

Recreation Area. Its name originated from

naturally occurring minerals carried to

the surface from underground aquifers,

providing a level of salinity not found

in the other springs. The semi-tropical

foliage of pines and palms at the

campground is a winning combination

for a summer outdoor experience,

perfect for the entire family to enjoy.

Rainbow River During the summer

this river in Dunnellon is the ideal aquatic

sanctuary for tubing. A natural landmark,

this family-friendly river shimmers with silver

and turquoise hues and stays at a cool 72-

74 degrees. It’s the perfect temperature to drift

downstream for three to four hours of relaxation.

It’s also ideal for swimming, bird watching, scuba diving,

boating, kayaking and paddleboarding as well.

KP Hole Park Known as ‘The Tuber Ride of Generations’ and the ‘Rainbow River

Classic,’ KP Hole has been a local and tourist go-to for more than 60 years. Water

adventurers can bring their own floats (60” and smaller), or rent one for your excursion.

AND THERE’S MORE… Ocala Drive-In Summer nights and drive-in movies go hand-in-hand and Ocala is

one of the few places in the country with a fully functional drive-in theater! Originally

opened in 1948 and renovated in 2011, double feature new releases are show seven-

days a week – when the sun goes down – with the full-service concession area we all love.

Ocala Drive-In creates a night your family will always remember.

And finally, when you’ve got that get-out-of-the-house feeling, go downtown, Ocala’s

historic downtown. If you don’t have a family photo in the legendary gazebo, get one

this summer and then get a bite to eat and sweeten your visit with a stop at Ocala’s

Chocolate and Confections. They feature hand-dipped chocolate fruit, truffles, eight

different fudge varieties and hand-scooped ice cream.

Ocala/Marion County offers countless opportunities to connect with nature and relax in

a classic Florida destination. And you’re lucky enough to be right in the middle of it!

For more information on Ocala/Marion County, visit ocalamarion.com.

Lazy Days

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN. Time to bring out your bathing suits and swim trunks,

flip-flops, and sunscreen. Summer is here! Those long hot days are upon us...

And I can’t think of a better way to cool off and enjoy time with friends and family

than visiting one of the many lakes in and just outside Marion County. We are lucky to

have so many options.

LAKE WEIR has a perfect white sand beach with plenty of room to set up your chairs,

an umbrella, and lie out your beach blanket and towels and set up for some fun in the

sun. If you haven’t been in awhile, it’s time for a refresher. Bring your boat and tube,

swim, or get buried in the sand - that’s what summer days are for. Have a giant duck

float? Bring that along too. Let your cares melt away as you float around in the lake.

There’s more. Fish or hike the nature trails, bring your volleyball for a game or

two on the sand, and get a light snack at the concession stand. There’s also plenty of

tree-shaded picnic tables and grills to cook up some lunch at the boat launch. So take

After a day at out on the water, you may want to head over to EATON’S BEACH SANDBAR & GRILL. It’s a great restaurant to grab a cocktail, eat some fresh

seafood, and listen to live music (music Thursday through Sunday). There are lots of

appetizing options for kid too. Like catfish fingers, grilled chicken breast with fresh

veggies, popcorn chicken, mac and cheese and more. All this and you’ll catch one of

Lake Weir’s amazing sunsets too! Drive over or pull up in your boat.

MOORHEAD PARK AT LAKE KERR is an angler’s paradise. If you’re looking for

the perfect place to launch your boat, Moorhead is it! They offer a free boat ramp. If

you don’t have a boat, that’s okay too. You can do some bank fishing right off the dock.

Lake Kerr takes up more than 2,830 acres of the Ocala National Forest and plunges

to more than 20 feet in some areas. This is a prime spot for bass fishing, but it’s also a

great location to catch other species of fish like bluegill, redear sunfish (shellcracker),

warmouth, and crappie. In addition to fishing you can also go sailing, water skiing, and

kayaking on Lake Kerr. Get your boat, your fishing poles, and tackle box ready and

head on over to Moorhead Park to start off your summer fishing fun!

TIP: Eaton’s Beach Sandbar & Grill provides a shuttle bus that will pick up parties of 10

to 14 people. Call the restaurant to reserve the shuttle, find out about catering or for

TIP: Free boat dock and fishing from the dock.

HORSESHOE LAKE PARK AND RETREAT is an ideal day trip destination, mini

getaway or a place to have your family reunion. You won’t have to go far, it’s just

38 minutes from the heart of Ocala. You’ll find a beautiful beach for laying out and

lounging while the kids dig into the sand! They provide picnic tables and grills for

cooking up your barbecue, plus just off the beach is a playground, volleyball net, and

nature trails. Don’t forget your fishing pole. There are plenty of fish to be caught. If you

want to get out on the lake, rent a canoe for only $5 for the entire day.

What’s unique about this park is its lodging. Rustic cabins are available for daily or

weekly rentals. Each cabin is furnished. The smaller cabins sleep 6 to 10 people and

have a kitchenette equipped with a microwave, gas stove, and mini fridge. The larger

cabins have a full kitchen with a dining area and sleep up to 12 people.

Canoe rental is included with the rental of the cabin. The small cabin rental is $100

per night and the large cabin is $150 per night. The day entrance fee for the park is $5

per carload for up to 8 people, and $1 per each additional person.

TIPS: Please make sure you bring cash and the exact change, as they do not provide

change. Also be sure to bring a cooler with refreshments as there are no concessions.

If you’re renting a cabin, be aware that you must bring your own towels, sheets,

blankets, dishes, and silverware. They do, however, provide some cooking utensils and

pots and pans.

The things that seem to stick with us the most are the experiences we have with the

people we love around us. So let’s grab our friends and family, jump in the car, crank up

4. Say goodbye to soda and avoid dehydration. Get in the habit of bringing a reusable water bottle to refill with water when a water fountain is available, share some sweet lemonade with the family or use flavor packets to transform water into a yummy fruit-flavored drink or low-calorie tea.

5. Limit late night snacking. It’s ok for kids to stay up a little bit later during the summer, but limit late-night snacking and encourage healthy breakfasts like high fiber cereals, fruit smoothies, or whole grain toast with eggs.

1. Fresh fruits and vegeatbles are at their peak. Pick watermelon, fresh berries, tomatoes, avocados, greens, and peppers and pack your diet with Vitamin A, B and C and minerals that boost energy and antioxidants for cell protection.

2. Think lean meats for your bbq. Look for 90/10 lean beef or turkey breasts and low-calorie, protein-packed meals. Try grilled salmon, tuna, or other fresh caught seafood too.

3. Pack your own cooler for the beach, park or concerts. Bring bottled water, sandwiches on whole grain breads, and low fat snacks like baked chips, yogurt, frozen grapes and hummus.

Cod Parmesan with ZucchiniSERVES 4 – PREPS IN 15 MINUTES

YOU’LL NEED

2 medium zucchini thinly sliced1 tbsp. butter or non-butter of choice

1 tsp. olive oilSalt and pepper to taste

1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese1 1/2 tbsps. mayonnaise1 tsp. fresh lemon juice

1/8 tsp. dried basil1/8 tsp. dried oregano1/8 tsp. onion powder

4 Alaska cod fillets (4-6 ounces each)2 tbsps. shredded Parmesan cheese, divided

Sauté zucchini slices in butter and oil in a non-stick skillet just until soft. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Keep warm. Heat oven to broil. Mix grated Parmesan, mayo, lemon juice, basil, oregano and onion powder together and salt and pepper to taste. Spread topping on each fillet and place on foil-lined broiler pan, place 5-7 inches from broiler for 3 minutes, or until top is browned and bubbly. Reduce heat to 300°F and cook 3-5 more minutes. Top cod with shredded Parmesan, add zucchini to plate and serve!

NOW MORE THAN EVER, food choices matter. People want healthy,

environmentally friendly foods without sacrificing flavor. Substituting the

traditional protein in your favorite dishes with seafood is one

deliciously smart way to satisfy these demands.

As you know, seafood offers numerous health benefits. In fact, because seafood is high in protein, omega-3 fatty acids and essential vitamins

and minerals, but low in saturated fat and calories,

several health organizations recommend two ser v ings

per week. When it comes to the environment,

seafood offers an advantage as well – it’s the most environmentally friendly of all the animal

proteins. In a comparison of environmental costs, wild-capture fisheries have a miniscule cost compared to foods such as beef, chicken, pork and dairy.

Changing up traditional meals to incorporate the goodness of seafood for your family is easier than you may think. Just pick a non-seafood protein dish that you regularly enjoy, and replace the protein with one of the many species of seafood. For example, replace veal in veal Parmesan with delicious Alaska cod or the chicken in chicken Marsala with flavorful salmon.

THE POWER OF THE GAVEL Gavel Clubs are an affiliate of Toastmasters

International, a 91-year-old international organization dedicated to communication

and leadership skills in a supportive environment. The Gavel Clubs at Marion

Correctional Institution (M.C.I.) are no ordinary gavel clubs. We believe they are the

Titanium Standard (surpassing the Gold Standard). The feedback we receive from the

men is that the clubs are changing their personalities. It’s giving them the tools to speak

with confidence and to even consider a career in public speaking.

The healing that results from sharing your story, your aspirations, your responsibility

for the decisions you’ve made – which led you to your current circumstances – has

the potential to heal better than any medicine. The camaraderie between the club

members is refreshing and transforms the compounds at M.C.I. We have actually

found that the men conduct their meetings at a much higher performance level than

the Toastmasters clubs in the free world.

The residuals of the Gavel Club at M.C.I. are many. They include the birth of a

Gavel College and a Gavel University, two programs for additional instruction and

training on public speaking and leadership that are available to these men. Additional

programs have delivered a Dream Craft Library and a Resource Center, housing

resources for the men in the Gavel Clubs. Special events – like Family Day – bring

added benefits.

A great way to measure the success of any club is to ask the question, “Do you

look forward to the meetings?” Both club members and volunteers have expressed

that Gavel Club meeting night is their favorite night. M.C.I. is now the home to four

The Essence of Story Time Dads Story Time Dads is a vision to create a program to unite a father with his

children.

“It has been said to those in prison, ‘Don’t allow your past to dictate your

future.’ That, ‘you are not the sum of your past mistakes.’ I have thought

about these statements, and have come to a slightly different conclusion,”

says Richard Midkiff. “That is, do not let your past dictate the present. Every

one of us, no matter where we are; whether in prison, or in society, all have

an opportunity ‘right in this moment’ to do something positive: to contribute

something to the world to change someone’s life. One of my ‘In this moment’ contributions is Story Time Dads.”

Story Time Dads is not new. Other state prisons have provided this program

in some form as a way for incarcerated parents to connect with their children. Warden

Southerland of M.C.I. approved a form of this program when she was warden of Lowell

Correctional Institution, a woman’s facility. This program was called Mommies Read

Program. The incarcerated mothers would be recorded reading to their children. After

this was completed, an MP3 player with the story was sent home to the children. This was

a special treat for the children and no doubt they enjoyed hearing their mothers read

to them.

One inmate at M.C.I., Richard Midkiff, wanted to offer something that tech-savvy

5-year-olds could relate to further. Richard proposed that instead of an MP3 player, a

video recording of the father reading a book to his children be made and sent home on

DVD, with a copy of the book. This would give the children an additional opportunity to

see their father read to them, and to read along with him.

We all know too well the effects of growing up in a fatherless home. Knowing how

detrimental it is to children to grow up without a dad, Story Time Dads was structured

with three main goals: To bring a smile to the faces of children by seeing their father read

a story to them; to get incarcerated fathers more involved with their children; and to

start the healing process between a father and his children, acting as a major

influence on a person about to re-enter society.

It is Richard’s opinion that if the healing process begins at home,

the incarcerated father will have a greater chance at taking the

next necessary steps to stay out of prison, and ultimately reduce

the recidivism rate. The goal of the Florida Department of Corrections

is to keep men and women out of prison. This can be accomplished by

changing lives, one at a time. This is what Story Times Dad is all about.

JULY IS PARK AND RECREATION MONTH!JULY HAS TWO OF MY favorite things; summer and National Park and Recreation Month! What a great excuse (as if we need one) to get outside and explore our favorite parks.

When I think of a summer day at the park, I think of playgrounds, splash pads and picnics with the family. The City of Ocala has almost 900 acres of land set aside to serve your leisure needs; and easy access to thousands and thousands of acres of greenways, conservation areas, lakes and rivers right next door.

I can’t tell you how often people say to me, “I never even knew this park was here.” So, my challenge to you is this: Load up the family (and a neighbor or two), throw in the picnic basket, and sometime in the month of July, set out for at least one park in Ocala/Marion County that you have never visited before.

Here are some Ocala parks that I think are our best kept secrets…

SCOTT SPRINGS This park always tops my list because it is a beautiful nature park tucked away neatly into one of the busiest parts of town. Most people are surprised to learn it’s there. You’ll be delighted with the nature-themed playground; a beautiful shaded walking trail; and an urban mountain bike trail (short course). BYOB – Bring your own bike! 2825 SW 24 Ave.

FORT KING NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK There’s a lot of hype about rebuilding the fort; but you don’t need to wait until it’s rebuilt to visit. This park boasts a beautiful nature trail (with audio tour); and a visitor’s center where you can learn all about the site that first put Ocala on the map. Plus, staff is running all kinds of cool programs (Wild Edibles, Fishing – From Pole to Catch, and Soap Making to name a few!) I promise, you will find something here you have never seen or done before. Check it out. 3925 East Fort King St.

LILLIAN BRYANT This is truly one of Ocala’s prettiest parks. While you’re there you can enjoy the walking trail or the kids can play on the playground. Picnic under the beautiful mossy oaks and throw a football around. 2200 NW 17 Pl.

POLLY PALMER PARK This one is really tricky to find, but you’ll be happy you put in the effort. The entrance is nestled just south of the Palm Garden Health and Rehab Center. The park provides a scenic view of ponds and massive oaks. Take a stroll, enjoy a picnic, read a book or toss a Frisbee around for a while. 3700 Block of SW 27 Ave.

TUSCAWILLA PARK While not as well hidden as the others (and surely not a secret by now), Tuscawilla Park is still my personal favorite. There’s so much to do, even on a slow day. The kids will enjoy the playground; there are plenty of places to find shade; you can wet a line in the lake; or enjoy a stroll to view the latest sculpture installation. Depending on when you drop by, you’ll likely also find the remote boats running in the west pond; or catch a special event. 500 NE Sanchez Ave.

Wherever you decide to go this summer, I hope you go safely and have a super fun time!

Picking P Perfect

SUMMERProgram

by GAYLA GRACE

SUMMER CAMP OFFERS ALL KINDS of fun and character-building experiences for kids of all ages. Whether you’re looking for a few hours of entertainment or weeks of intentional skill building, here’s some tips on finding the perfect summer camp fit.

Age 0-5 Day camps offer the perfect opportunity for young kids to experience time away from Mom to become independent and explore new activities. Camps for preschool children focus on free play, sharing with others, group games (inside and outside), water games and simple arts and crafts. Free VPK summer programs and day cares in the area provide for all of the above.

Age 6-11 Elementary-age children thrive at camp, whether it’s day camp or overnight camp. It’s the perfect solution to sibling squabbles and long summer days. But it pays to do your research and find the right fit for your child. From sports, swimming, equestrian, nature, science, art camps and beyond, you’ll find something in this Summer Activity Guide that meets your child’s activity level and lets them explore new hobbies. If your child has never experienced camp, start with a day camp or send a friend along for an away camp. It’s important that their first camp experience be a good one.

Age 12-15 Tweens and teens have better focus than younger children and benefit from camps that more closely match their interests and personalities. Sports, music, swim and art camps are great for this age and help kids advance athletic skills and enhance artistic talent. Academic camps offer youth advanced-learning opportunities in subjects they might want to explore for long-term focus, as does junior lifeguard training. All provide a safe place and creative options for teens and tweens to hang out while parents work during summer break.

Age 16-18 This is a great age to become involved as a volunteer, a camp counselor, and although it can be a little harder – find their first part-time job.

Whether your child is 2 or 15, camp is the perfect place to find adventure and make lifelong memories in the process. Don’t delay - find a camp your child will enjoy today!

Gayla Grace, freelance writer and mom to five, has sent her kids to camp every summer

and continues to find new camps for her one child still at home to enjoy.

MARION COUNTY FOOTBALL PLAYER LERENTEE MCCRAY MAKES HISTORY

IT WAS VERY ODD to see an NFL football

player walk into the Marion County

Commissioner’s meeting on April 5th.

Politics and football rarely mix together,

but with a Super Bowl champion in the

room things change.

Playing for the NFL’s Denver Broncos

special teams unit, McCray became the

first ever Marion County graduate to

play in and win a Super Bowl. Because

of McCray’s exclusive accomplishment,

the commissioners chose to recognize

him with a special citation and correlating

plaque.

Former Dunnellon High School

football star Lerentee McCray, along with

his family members, appeared at the April

5th commission meeting because McCray

made history.

“Lerentee is a great example of the

talent that comes out of Marion County,”

Commissioner Kathy Bryant said. “What

an inspiration he is to our county’s youth.”

Accompanied to the commission floor

with his fiancée Milena, son Lamarie,

mother Cybil and godmother Tasha,

McCray nearly teared up as Bryant read

the decree in the citation. “This is an

ultimate honor,” McCray shared. “I feel

gracious and glorified. (I nearly teared up

because) I cry from the heart. It’s a joyous

occasion to be a part of.”

McCray’s path to becoming a Super

Bowl champion was rare. At the end of

2013, after playing linebacker for UF for

four years, it seemed he was an unwanted

commodity. But all that turned in his favor

when the Broncos picked him up.

Between 2000 and 2015, a total of 85

Gators were selected in the NFL draft. Of

those 85, only eight have been part of a

Super Bowl winning team. Coincidently

three of those eight – wide receiver

Andre Caldwell, offensive lineman Max

Garcia and McCray – were on the Denver

Broncos team that defeated the Carolina

Panthers this February in Super Bowl 50.

The odds of missing the draft and still

winning a Super Bowl are astronomical.

Winning the lottery might be easier.

Yet that’s exactly what happened to

Lerentee McCray.

His luck keeps changing for the better.

The 106 NFL season finds McCray playing

for the Green Bay Packers in the position

he was born to play, a linebacker.

With his on-field success, McCray has

a platform to impact the lives of others off

the field as well. He is planning to focus

some of his efforts here in Marion County –

just like former NFL players Drayton

Florence and Clinton Hart have.

“I can help be a stepping stone for

kids,” says McCray. “I’m happy to have

been raised here. We can take the kids

and the community to new heights. Help

kids succeed in their goals – not only

in sports but also in academics. Kids

come up to me and say ‘I want to be a

football player,’ Why can’t they be the first

astronaut from Marion County?”
