AS I SIT DOWN to write this, the only thing running through my mind is the little engine that could… I think I can, I think I can. Only a handful of days until the school year is over and this household is defi nitely limping to the fi nish. Between STAAR testing and fi nals and the sports seasons winding down, these last couple of months have been a whirlwind to say the least! Yet, time somehow seems to still fl y by. Welcome

to the summer of 2016, everyone! Mixed emotions of happy and sad cross my mind. I’m very thankful for the break my kiddos get and a little sad as it means my babies are getting that much older. The break is upon us but the hectic schedule pours on, I’m afraid. It’s the good kind of hectic. With one kid enrolled in 5 camps and the other in 2, I don’t count on slowing down too much. Plus, as you’ll notice inside these pages, our community has a summer calendar chock full of events for local children and families alike. Check out our website at www.locallifetx.com to fi nd a printable version made perfect for the refrigerator. Grab your favorite magnet and hang it up for ideas all summer long. Camp time translates into “mom-time” around this house. Yes, I will miss their little faces, but I’ll also be able to enjoy some uninterrupted time for myself to freshen up my 3rd child – Local Life – as well as knock a few things out around the house. And maybe, just maybe, that sweet man I live with will take a hint and get this girl out to a restaurant or two during those so-called free weeks! I love how lucky we are in this community to have so many wonderful dining and entertainment options so close to where we live. I recently read a wonderfully written article by Senior Pastor Rick Owen of Pathway Church in Burleson, TX. Rick is an athlete, husband,

and well-respected man in our local community. When I see Rick, I see a man who has all the answers. He’s got it figured out. A guy like this probably found the role of fathering to be a breeze, right? Well, according to him, wrong!

As men, we are notorious for not asking directions, for help, and definitely never for comfort in a time of weakness. It’s just not allowed. The truth is, however, there are numerous occasions when we need all of the above. Rick spoke about the instant fears that set in when he became a father. “You mean, I am responsible for keeping this kid alive?!” he was quoted. He spoke of the fears of an ever-changing moral culture and the dangers present in the world we live in. It’s scary to think about. It’s also important to bear that burden of responsibility for the development of the type of adult your child will grow into.

Rick had plenty of fears and I would guess still does, as his children grow older. Can I change a diaper without getting squirted in the face? What do I do when he cries? Can I afford food, clothing, shelter, and college? Holy cow, can I stay healthy enough and smart enough to still beat him in competition as he gets older? Most importantly, can I model what a godly husband and father look like? Can any of you dads out there relate? No doubt, I can. My list of fears was and is very long. The catch is, you can’t show it. Your son or daughter can’t see fear in dad’s face. Dad is the one safe refuge a child

has to turn to when things get scary. You represent security, strength, safety and confidence to them. When dad is confident and steady, the walls can come crumbling in all around your child but they will always know they have a safe place to turn. Pretty big responsibility isn’t it?

Rick, like many believers turns to the Bible for encouragement and guidance. For sure, there is wisdom beyond reproach inside the bindings of this historic collection of accounts and truth. I’ve consumed and applied the lessons in many aspects of my life. I don’t mind sharing that there are actual answers to this seemingly impossible task of parenting within the pages. For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to read this book, I would encourage you to turn to your brothers. I’m not referring to your blood relatives specifically, although they would certainly work, but more to your community of men that exist within your circle of life. Like you, many of them are dealing with the exact same questions and fears. Many of them have already been there, done that, and got the T-shirt. Experience is a great teacher.

Now, it does take a little bit of humility and courage to approach another man and admit you have fears. If you have friends like mine, there’s a good chance there will be a joke attached to the initial response. That’s OK. I also know that I have surrounded myself with good men, good fathers, and good husbands. I can count on the fact that their humor will be certainly followed with a serious and insightful tone of good instruction or feedback. None of us have all the answers. We are human

after all. We do have a working sense of reason that lets us all know that the answers do exist. For the most part, every experience we have as a father has been experienced by another before us. Don’t be afraid to seek that wisdom. Whether it comes from written guidance or from the voice of another that you respect. Seek it. Ask for directions. Ask for help or just simply share some stories. You never know when another dad is going through the same thing and you’ve just opened a door to help them.

Finally, I’ll encourage you to father through the eyes of your kiddo. Be thoughtful in what you’re doing and saying. Try to understand how they see you and how they hang on every word that comes from your mouth. In their eyes, you truly are a superhero. I mean it. This doesn’t change as they get older, either. Your name may change from “dad” to “dude” but the pedestal they place you upon does not waiver. You have an amazing opportunity to shape a life and avoid the life mistakes you made. You can steer and guide your child safely through a pretty

scary world in their eyes. Your experiences and the experiences of others you’ve sought out can literally be the difference in a life of success for your child or a life of turmoil. See it as a gift – your shot at doing life better!

In the “About” section on Facebook I have written, “Be the man your children think you are.” It’s been there since I fi rst opened my account. This is a goal I try to achieve on a daily basis. Sometimes we don’t have the confi dence in ourselves or question our methods because of uncertainty. I know that my kids never slide in their confi dence of their father. I know they believe in me with the utmost conviction. This is what keeps me going. This is what drives my behavior. I know I’m not perfect, but you can bet when it comes to carving the path of life for my two daughters I will do everything I can within my power to live up to their expectations and belief in me. That, and the fact that I am confi dent I have a little help from above letting me know that I can be unstoppable. You can, too! Happy Father’s Day, fellas.
