I.CreatingaGoogleHangout:

1. LogintoyourSCCGmailaccount.2. Openanewtabandgotothefollowingwebaddress:http://hangouts.google.com

3. Onthewebpage,youwillneedtoinstallHangoutsifyouhaveneveruseditbefore.PleaseseethisvideotoinstallHangouts:http://pages.southwesterncc.edu/e_mccully/Tutorials/GoogleHangoutsInstall.mp4

4. Youshouldnowseeascreensimilartothisone:

5. Intheupperright,besuretochecktoseethatyouraccountisyourSouthwesternCommunityCollegeaccount,andnotapersonalaccount.Ifitistheincorrectaccount,simplyclick“Switchaccount”tochangeit.

6. Clickon“VIDEOCALL,”whichwillresultinaboxaskingyoutonameyourHangout.Someideasinclude:“Prof.Smith’sHangout”or“Prof.Smith’sOfficeHours”or“HIS111VirtualClassroom,3/1/2017.”Onceyoutypeinaname,clickonthewhitearrowbuttontotherightofthetext.

7. AsyouhavejustcreatedtheHangout,youwillbethefirstto“arrive.”Youwillseeaninvitationscreen.Westronglysuggestthatyoudonotclickontheblue“Invitepeople”button,asthiswillinvitepeopleonlythroughGoogle+andwillnotemailalinktothoseyouwishtoinvitetothehangout.Instead,double-clickonthepermanentlinkgiven(“https://hangouts.google.com/….etc”)andpushCtrl-Ctocopy(orCommand-CifyouareusingaMac).NowpastethelinkintoanemailtosendtoanyoneyouwishtoinvitetotheHangout.

Note:YoucancreateaHangoutsuchasthisinadvanceandemailthoseyouwishtoinvitewiththelink(alsomakingsureyoukeeparecordofthelinkyourself).BesuretolettheinviteesknowwhenyouwillbeparticipatingintheHangoutsothattheycan“meet”youthereatthecorrecttime.InordertoaccessyourHangout,youwillsimplyclickonthelinkyouhavesavedorcopyandpasteitintoabrowserwindowandthiswilltakeyouintotheHangout.

9. Youmaygetamessageaskingyoutoallowthewebcamera.ClickAllow.

10. Wheninviteesgotothelinkyouhaveprovidedtothem,theywillseeascreenlikethisandshouldclick“Join”:

11. OncesomeoneelsejoinsyouintheHangout,youwillseeyourselfandapictureoftheotherpersonaswell.

12. Ifyoumoveyourcursortothetopofthescreen,youwillseeabaroficons,whichwillgiveyoubasicoptionsforcontrollingtheHangout.

13. TOSHAREYOURSCREEN:Youwillseeiconsontheleftsideofyourscreen.Theblueoneallowstoyoutype/chatwithotherpeopleintheHangout.ThegreeniconallowsyoutoshareyourscreenwithotherusersintheHangout.Clickthegreenicon.

14. Youmayseeaboxthatshowsdifferentscreensforyoutochoosefrom.Choosetheoneyouprefer.

Inmostcircumstances,youwillprobablywanttosharethescreenthatisshowingwhatyouareviewingrightnow,andthenbringupwhateverprogramorbrowserwindowyouwishfortheotheruserstosee.Belowisanexampleofbringingupadifferenttabinabrowserwindowtoshowstudentswhatisonthatscreen.

Theabovescreenisanexampleofwhatstudentswillseeontheirend.

15. YouwillseethisbaratthetopofyourHangoutsscreenifyouaresuccessfullysharing

yourscreeninGoogleHangouts.

16. Whenyouarefinishedsharingyourscreen,click“Stop”andHangoutswillreturntousingyourwebcam.Theotherusersmayalsosharetheirscreenswithyou!

17. WhenyouarefinishedwiththeHangout,clicktheredphoneicononthetop(asseeninstep12.Remember,youcanreturntothissamewebaddressandgetintotheHangoutlateron,ascanyourstudents.
