A quick bit of history and geography…

• Location: East Africa, off the coast of Tanganyika (mainland Tanzania), which was granted independence from Britain in 1963

• In 1964 the ruling Sultan of Zanzibar was overthrown by African revolutionaries. The death toll is estimated as up to 20,000 Arabs and South Asians

• Prior to 1964, Zanzibar was a territory of Oman After the revolution, it became a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania

• The island is 53 miles long and 24 miles wide with beautiful sandy beaches and biodiverse coral reefs

• The schools project is located in Unguja Ukuu, a remote village, hidden from the tourist trail

The Zanzibar HELP Foundation

• In 2010 Feroz and Hassan set up the Zanzibar HELP Foundation to bring development assistance to the people of Zanzibar

• Feroz set up a successful free dental clinic which offered outreach dental health to remote villages

• Working with the villagers of Unguja Ukuu, they rebuilt the primary school to accommodate 800 children aged 5 -14

• For health reasons, Feroz has transferred the dental clinic to the UK charity HIPZ but is still involved in outreach camps and improving local dentistry

• Caroline and Ann have taken on the challenge of enhancing the educational offering of the school

Zanzibar Schools Project

From February 2015: Getting ready

• We took a TEFL course and learnt basic Swahili

• The English Language Centre Brighton kindly sponsored a Tanzanian expert to visit the school and survey teaching needs – there were a lot!

November 2015: Arrival in Zanzibar

• Induction from Feroz and Hassan

• Met with local Rotarian, teacher and social entrepreneur Gasica, who agreed to help us

• BUT – school’s out!

• Meeting with school committee – agreement toteach the teachers in the mornings and children in the afternoons

“Teach the teachers” evolved…

2015

• The teachers participated in a 40 hour English course over 5 weeks

• Topics include English grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and speaking practice

• Group work/new approaches to teaching

2016

• Less time on English due to other commitments

• BUT, they started computer lessons

• Learnt about the internet

• Experienced Skype

• Syllabus developed eg ICT, science and English

Teaching the students

2015• Approximately 80 students, from the primary and

secondary schools and the local community

• 8 hours of English lessons each week (English grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and speaking)

• Disney videos motivate interest in English

• Engaging activities based on TEFL approach

Teaching the students

2016• Skype link with Varndean school

• 40 students (aged 11-13) selected for advanced English class in preparation for year-end exams

• Lunches provided so they can stay after school

• Fun English and community classes continue

• Support for local teacher (Gasica) continues

• A volunteer teacher and computer expert arrive in Zanzibar (March)

• Pen pals project starting up

• Kio Kit computers introduced (April)

Vocational computer training

• Zanzibar aspires to have 50% plus employment in tourism

• BUT the labour forces is unskilled and hotels recruit from outside the island

• The island urgently needs to develop business-related skills

Our project

• Set up an ICDL accredited computer course in conjuction with PLCI (Gasica’s NGO)

• Accompanying business English and entry-level business skills

• Global grant involving Guildford Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Zanzibar, Stone Town, Soiree and other clubs?

Budget: Approximately $45,000

A day in the life…

• Richard Harris, an award-winning film-maker and photographer plans to visit Zanzibar in January 2017

• 30 students will participate in the project

• The students will be instructed in using the cameras and will record their daily lives

Outcome

• The photographs will be edited into an exhibitionthat tours Zanzibar hotels

• A souvenir book aimed at the tourist market will be produced

• A photo-reportage piece will be targeted at the media in the UK
