FOREWORD

Actually I wanted just "hang out", read, and don´t do to much on Zanzibar. But after landing and during the transport by taxi to the hotel I was im-pressed by streets, light, colors and people.

So my camera was ready and it started immediately.

Most tourists stay only 2 or 3 days on the island and recover after the tours in Tanzania and Kenya. The visitors have already experienced a lot, safaris, Kilimanjaro ect. and so is the willingness to explore the island relatively small. Not for me.

I tried to fetch three themes with my camera, beach, streets and people.

Some images might be stereotypically, but it is my perspective and my moti-vation.

BEACHI stayed two full weeks on the island, and I watched the hustle and bustle. There was much to see, the beach boys, who try to sell tours and souvenirs, the children playing wonderful and "old fashioned", the fishermen and their women in daily work and the tourists "lazing" on the beach.

So I followed this life with my camera.

STREETSStone Town is a beautiful city with a great atmosphere, lots of small streets, shady corners and the exotic life in the markets. It's worth to go to the outer suburbs, where you see no tourists.

The streets are full of surprises, great people and an invitation to the house is not uncommon.

A piece of luck was meeting with Zakia and Hans, a photographer couple living on Zanzibar. Quite by chance I discovered their small gallery and there I meet Zakia and Hans. Two days later we had a date for a photo walk and I really enjoyed the time together.

PEOPLEGorgeous faces, happy children but also grim looks, everything can be found here.

It is a muslim dominated island, where religion plays an important role, but with patience, kindness and respect you can also shoot strangers without getting in trouble. It is also helpful to speak a few words in local language, it opens some locked doors and hearts.
