Swim Lessons for all 2nd Grade McKissick StudentsOver 80% of students at McKissick Elementaryqualify for free or reduced lunch and many have neverexperienced the confidence and joy that comes from

learning to swim. So, the YMCA and McKissick partneredand began providing all 2nd grade McKissick studentswith swim lessons. Principal Gary Mohr said, It iscomforting to know that our students are learning a skillthat will help to keep them safer for the rest of theirlives. After last year, I had parents asking if we wouldcontinue this each year. One parent informed me thather son was scared of swimming. After taking the swimlessons, he was asking to go to the pool. The YMCA,providing these swim lessons, has definitely made apositive impact on the lives of kids at McKissick.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING?Children who are not potty-trained need to wear a swim diaper.Long hair needs to be tied-back to help them swim without thedistraction of hair in the face. Although not required, wesuggest that girls wear a one piece suit so that they do nothave to adjust it while swimming.

CAN I WATCH MY CHILDS LESSON?Yes! We require that parents stay during lessons but ask thatparents stay within the seating areas so that the children arenot distracted.

WHAT IF WE MISS A CLASS?Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be offered for missedclasses.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CANNOT PARTICIPATE?Once a session has begun, if the child is pulled out of the classby the parents/guardians, the YMCA will only issue a credit. Norefunds will be issued.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BAD WEATHER?The decision to cancel classes due to inclement weather wilbe made as early as possible. We will notify you of anycancellations as soon as we can.

All sessions have 2 inclement weather make up dates set in classes are cancelled. However, the YMCA can only guaranteclasses per session. Inclement weather make-up days artypically on Fridays, same time.

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS AFRAID OF THE WATER?If your child is fearful of water, our instructors will be limitein their ability to help during group lessons. Most fears comfrom a lack of exposure to water, resulting in uncertainty othe water. In order for children to learn to swim, they mustwilling to attempt the skills that are being taught.

We recommend helping your child get adjusted to water byplaying in the bathtub. Water on and around a childs face be an overwhelming experience the first time it happens. Hthem prepare before they arrive at lessons. Also considerprivate swim lessons for one on one attention.

    MY DAUGHTER IS NOW CONFIDENT

Bryce couldnt swim without a life-jacket when shecame to camp and didnt have the confidence inherself to try to swim onher own. With encourage-ment and support fromstaff and friends, Bryce can

now swim on her own. Shewas so proud of herself theday she passed her swimtest and now swims like afish in the deep end!

[The Y] has increased herconfidence and faith.

I enjoy having an opportunity to invest in thepersonal development of the kids I coach. Like most, I began coaching because I wanted to be with my son and fethat my role as afather should be toinvest in him. WhatI have learned overthe last couple ofyears is that I feelnot only personallyinvested in my sonbut in each of thechildren I currentlycoach and havecoached in the past.It really does feel likea family at the YMCAfor me and my family.
