INTERVIEW

RAQUEL MATEU “I DREAM OF PARTICIPATING IN PARALYMPICS”Raquel Mateu has a degree in teaching and she specialized in audition and language by the University of Valencia, currently pursuing a master’s degree in special education at the University of Valencia, and being part of the Table Tennis Club Burjassot-Valencia

Question: How and when did you begin competing?

Answer: When I went to school in my town C.P. “Beata Inés” in Benigánim, in extracurricular activities I started playing, I was playing for three years and compe-ting at regional level as junior with people without disabilities. For reasons of incom-patibility with my disability and technical resources available I had to leave it.

Twenty years later the University of Valencia gave me the opportunity to play, through the adapted sports’ program.

In 2009 I attended the Forum of Adap-ted Sports organized by the University and it was there that I discovered some opportunities associated with sport and disability.

Q: What are your dreams as an athlete?A: To be able to compete at internatio-

nal level and of course to participate in Paralympics.

Q: There are a lot of University stu-dents that do not practice sport, how would you encourage them to practice table tennis?

A: First of all that it is a non aggressive sport, relations between athletes are very good, it requires great concentration and anyone can practice it even if you are not physically developed and in addition age does not matter.

Q: what values are in a sport such as table tennis?

A: friendship, complicity and a lot of communication especially when playing doubles, companionship...

Q: what was the most emotional day of your career?

A: on June 16, 2012 in the regional championship of Onda when, after a tough game against Alvaro, I won and re-sulted third of the community.

Q: Can you tell us an interesting anec-dote that happened to you as an athlete?

A: After winning the mentioned match I was looking for my coach Salvador Giner to dedicate the triumph and i was not able to find him in the whole pavilion.

Q: as a member of the program of adapted sport from the UV, what kind of advantages do you have in your case?

A: many, first of all every day counse-ling on sports, health support, opportuni-ties to participate in courses and lectures explaining my experience.

Q: after participating in the regional table tennis championship what do you expect from this season?

A: the result I got, third in regional Open Comunitat Valenciana Tennis Tau-la’2012 disabled, and what I did not ex-pect, I was also runner-up in Valencian community women doubles along with player Yolanda Baidez from Alicante Ten-nis Club and improving the third position I got in the Spanish Championship (Almeria 2012)

Q: You are currently an active member of the women Committee of the Royal Spanish Federation of tennis and table tennis, what are your duties and what the objectives of this Committee?

A: To participate in everything regar-ding the promotion of women and table tennis, and to moti-vate women with di-sabilities to practice

this sport, as at the national level there are very few.

Q: You recently participated as a speaker in the conference to promote sport organized by the Chair Divina Pas-tora of adapted sports, what did you think of the day? How was this experience from your position as speaker?

A: the conferences organized by the Chair, regardless my participation, are always very interesting. There was a good organization and it was very successful. Although little by little I’m increasing my knowledge about adapted sports, in each conference I learn something new and moreover I meet very interesting people with a spirit of tireless struggle.

As a speaker, due to my inexperience, when you’re done always have the feeling that you have left something out, but I think that there will be a next opportuni-ty to contribute with everything that I’m learning.

Q: in table tennis particularly, how do you consider the playing level at Universi-ty competitions in Spain?

A: there is a high level, this year is my first year as a representative of the Uni-versity of Valencia in the Spanish Cham-pionship and it was a very nice experien-ce, but the high level of the athletes left me without any trophy.

Q: what benefits can report the prac-tice of competitive sport to a University student?

A: To be more integrated in the edu-cational community both within Valencia and with the rest of the Spanish Univer-sities and sport is always beneficial for health.
