Director’s NotesAlmost, Maine is a play that has been widely produced at high schools, colleges and professional theaters around the country. Aside from the practical aspects of the play that make it easily producible, and the great roles for actors, the play is essentially about relationships and the discovery of love. As a department, we felt that after a period of profound political turmoil and an ongoing pandemic, it would be great to add a light -hearted play with a hopeful message to our season. Rehearsing the play was admittedly very…well, let’s say it was different over zoom. I acknowledge every actor and our stage manager, Savannah Casey, who patiently worked with me to determine how to best tell these stories through a medium that we came to see as a combination of theatre and film. This is my first production here at the University of Redlands and special thanks to the department faculty and staff who have continued their stellar work and collaboration throughout this challenging pandemic time. It’s been a joy to work with everyone and to support the students in their development. A special shout out to student designers, Kolby Rattigan and Kayleigh Stelling, who adapted to every iteration of the show as we moved from an outdoor in-person concept to the filmed version you are witnessing. Even through the challenging process of making theatre during a pandemic, the continues and realizes its purpose – to bring us together to reflect upon what it means to be human. In the case of Almost, Maine, the message is pretty simple. Love is love is love.

The Department of Theatre Arts Presents

2021-2022 Season ProductionsNATIVE GARDENS by Karen ZacariasSTUDENT DIRECTOR: THA BUS major Gabriel Rodriguez

Native Gardens is a true breath of comic fresh air. It’s a biting, perceptive, and ultimately hopeful sendup to our fraught relationships with those around us – even right next door. Beyond snappy one-liners and garden hose fights, the play challenges audiences to look beyond petty differences and rediscover our shared decency.

THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE by Matthew LopezDIRECTED BY Theatre Arts Chair Gregory Ramos

He’s young, he’s broke, his landlord’s knocking at the door, and he’s just found out his wife is going to have a baby. To make matters even more desperate, Casey is fired from his gig as an Elvis impersonator in a run-down, small-town Florida bar. When the bar owner brings in a B-level drag show to replace his act, Casey finds that he has a whole lot to learn about show business—and himself.

THE THANKSGIVING PLAY by Larissa FastHorseSTUDENT DIRECTORS: Senior THA BUS majors James Johnston and Tom Johnston

Ah, Thanksgiving, that most American of holidays: when families gather to celebrate the warmth of home, the bounty of the harvest — and a legacy of genocide and violent colonial expansion. Good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in Larissa FastHorse’s wickedly funny satire, as a troupe of terminally “woke” teaching artists scrambles to create a pageant that somehow manages to celebrate both Turkey Day and Native American Heritage Month.
