Golf was invented in Scotland. It is a game of honor, integrity and sportsmanship. Tournament team golf is played with 5 team members, the lowest 4 scores are counted toward the team total. One round consists of 18 holes. All play is governed by USGA rules. Collegiate women’s golf plays roughly around 6200 total yards on usually a par 72 golf course. While the concept of golf is quite simple, getting a 1¾ inch golf ball into a 4½ inch cup in the least strokes possible is extremely challenging. You must respect the rewards & letdowns of the round & absolutely enjoy the walk outside.
Most golf courses are set-up with a par of 72 strokes (some can be 70 or 71). A par 72 course means that it should take a golfer 72 swings of the club to ¡ nish the course. Par is the amount of shots given on each hole (i.e., par 3, par 4, etc.). An “eagle” is two below par, a “birdie” is one under par, and a “bogey” is one over par. A golfer will usually use a driver or fairway wood o¤ the tee for their ¡ rst shot. From then on irons are used to hit towards the green. Once the ball is on the green a player will use their putter to putt the ball in the hole.

Matt Newgent begins his eighth season as head coach for the Cougar baseball team and also serves as Athletic Director. Under Newgent’s guidance the Cougar’s have been ranked each of the last four seasons, and as high as a #2 national ranking in 2008. Since Coach Newgent’s arrival seven years ago, the program has again regained its prominence nationally. Newgent and his sta spent the 2009 o -season continuing a renovation of the Cougar baseball facility, while continuing to recruit quality student-athletes to ensure continued success for the program.
Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach Don Brown. During that season the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they ¡ nished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at the University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at the University of Indianapolis.
Prior to coaching at RCC, Newgent served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Olney Central Community College in Olney, Illinois, where they ¡ nished with a record of 40-20 and a trip to the Region 24 Tournament. He was also the Assistant Baseball Coach at the University of Indianapolis for three seasons and helped guide the team to a third place ¡ nish in the NCAA Division II World Series in 2000, and a school best 51-15 record in 2001.
Newgent is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association. He earned his Associate of Arts from Redlands Community College in 1997, his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1999, and his Master of Business Administration in 2002 from the University of Indianapolis. Coach Newgent, a native of Piedmont, now resides in Yukon with his wife Christa and their son, Ian.

First-year head coach Chris Grace comes to Redlands Community College to build on the Lady Cougars’ previous success on the course. With Coach Grace’s experience, the Lady Cougars look to be formidable.
Coach Grace is a native Oklahoman who graduated from Poteau High School in 1989. At Poteau, Grace was an All-State golfer. He played collegiate golf at East Central University and was an All-Conference pick. Grace earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education degree.
In 1996, Grace was hired as the Men’s Head Coach at East Central University. In his nearly ¡ ve years at ECU, Grace had several teams rank on the national level. In 1997, he was named Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year. He was also named the NCAA District 6 Coach of the Year in 1999.
After ECU, Grace coached at Dave Pelz Golf School in Florida. At Dave Pelz, Grace was named Lead Instructor in January 2003 and Senior Instructor September 2005.
In the last two years, he has also served as RCC’s assistant coach. Grace coached RCC’s former coach, Gerrod Chadwell, at East Central University. The pair reunited for Redlands back-to-back NJCAA National Championships.
Grace has coached star players such as PGA pros Vijay Singh, Mike Weir, KJ Choi, Jodie Mudd, BJ Statten and Brandon McKnight. He also coached LPGA superstar Annika Sorenstam. In« uential players he has taught include Rudy Giuliani and Tom Brokaw.

Third year Redlands Community College Head Athletic Trainer, Eli Zucksworth, is responsible for preparing the athletes for both practice and games while treating on-site injuries.
Eli Zucksworth is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association. He is a 2005 graduate of Oklahoma State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training. In 2007, he received his Master of Education degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

The story of the Redlands Cougar is shrouded in mystery. The Cougar ¡ rst appeared as the o cial Redlands mas-cot post-1970. Prior to that Redland’s (originally called El Reno Junior College) mascot was the Chieftain, which was chosen to correspond with El Reno High School’s mascot, the Indian. Now, this elusive nameless cat can occasion-ally be spotted around campus. Be On The Lookout!

SEASON
OUTLOOKThe 2010-2011 women’s golf season will bring many new faces to the Cougar’s program. With only three returning players from last season’s 3rd place showing at the National Tournament, there are many opportunities for the new Cougar’s to leave their impression on the upcoming season.
Returning from last year’s squad is Jessica Schiele, a second team All-American from Grimsby, England. Along with her is Sarah Harper from Duncan, Oklahoma, who played in every tournament last year for the Cougars and Kelsey Chugg from Gilbert, Arizona, who saw limited playing time in the season.
Jessica Schiele played in every tournament following her arrival in January, posting 4 top ten ¡ nishes last spring, ¡ nishing 2nd twice, at the NJCAA Region II tournament with rounds of 82-76 and rounds of 79-76 at the Northwood Univ. (TX) Bluebonnet Classic, while also having a pair of 6th place ¡ nishes. Jessica’s rounds of 75-72-77 helped her place 6th at the National Tournament in Daytona allowing her to earn 2nd Team All-American honors for the 2010 season.
Sarah Harper, gained valuable experience, playing in every tournament for the Cougar’s last season. She will be looking to provide leadership and be solid a player in the Cougar’s top ¡ ve. Kelsey Chugg saw limited playing time last season, but brings a lot of very good skills to the Cougars and looks to be major contributor for the 2010-2011 campaign.
Joining the 2010-2011 women’s golf team as freshman are Karson Bizzell of Mustang, Oklahoma; Bethany Darrough of King¡ sher, Oklahoma; Selu Fotu of Alpine, Utah; and Kristen Sammarco of Pembroke Pines, Florida.
Karson was part of a her team’s 2010 4th place team ¡ nish in class 6A as well as her winning

Selu Fotu has compiled a very solid junior career competing and winning multiple events and also played on her high school’s state championship team during her sophomore season. Kristen Sammarco has competed in and won numerous individual and team titles including winning a team state championship during her high school career.
