Gaitan,Munro Galloway, Penny McElroy and Jeff Wilson.

Truth, justice and the American way seem to be rapidly fading along with the notion of the American Dream. And American Exceptionalism is riddled with a lot of exceptions. The easy-on-the eyes mythology of America’s past injustices keep us in a troubling state of denial in the present unless we actively confront the barriers of racism, sexism, income inequality, and injustice that continue to impede full participation in the American Dream for many who feel disenfranchised.

At the same time the American Exceptionalism continues to be sold to the public as we to see ourselves as the model for the world with American dreams to become global ones.

This exhibition featuring artists Sally Edelstein, Karen Gutfreund, Penny Mateer, Sinan Revell, Debra Thompson, Linda Vallejo and Margi Weir is particularly timely as we go into an election year. With polarized political parties and the absurdity of the news media focusing on sound bites with biased editorials rather than real news, this collection of art addressing issues of social justice stimulate dialog on truth, justice and the American Way. The work serves to educate and sensitize the viewer to various issues while conveying an underlying philosophy of collective responsibility and commitment to change.

Join us during Homecoming and Parent’s Weekend for this celebration of the musical theatre form! University of Redlands alumnus Gavin Thrasher will lead our students (and some special guests) in an evening of songs from a wide range of musical styles. This concert performance will feature solos, duets and group numbers from some favorite popular musicals including In the Heights, Parade, Once the Musical,Dogfight and Next to Normal.

Note: The matinee performance on Saturday, October 22 will end in time for those who want to attend the speaker event in the Memorial Chapel.

Studio Big BandOctober 19Casa Loma Room, 8 p.m.

The Studio Big Band is a repertory 20 piece jazz ensemble that brings life back to the sounds of the Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Rob McConnell, Charles Mingus, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra to name a few. In addition to these tributes to past greats, the ensemble plays selections from the “new guys” Gordon Goodwin, Bob Mintzer, Nathan Parker Smith and everything in between. The band frequently plays adaptations for big band of works by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays and even the British rock group Radiohead. These free concerts are a great way to hear how jazz is alive and well at Redlands.

ComplineOctober 23 Memorial Chapel, 7:30 p.m.

The Office of Compline is rooted in the daily cycle of prayer observed by the early Christian monastic communities. By the 6th century, St. Benedict had codified the rule for his followers, setting forth a formula for the recitation of psalms, hymns, prayers, and readings seven times a day. Compline was the final prayer hour before retiring for the evening.

The service incorporates plainsong and diverse choral styles and genres creating thus a unique blend of new and older musical traditions. As was customary in medieval chapels, Compline is offered by candlelight and much of the music is unaccompanied. The unifying thread throughout the Compline service is quiet meditation and reflection led and inspired by music.

Choral Concert – “The Four Elements”November 4Memorial Chapel, 8 p.m.

Featuring choral works that celebrate the four elements, this concert will include Bel Canto, Chapel Singers and University Choir performing works by composers including R. Murray Schafer, Bading, and Calalang.

David Scott’s Faculty Trumpet Recital on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 will offer works by Paul Hindemith, Eugene Bozza, Bruce Broughton, Leonard Bernstein and others. The recital will include a special performance of Eric Ewazen’s A Hymn for the Lost and the Living, written as a response to the tragedy that occurred in New York City in September of 2001.

The University Symphonic Band will play band favorites from the past like Gustav Holst’s Suite for Military Band in Eb as well as today’s top composers Frank Ticheli, David Gillingham, Samuel Hazo and the like. The band also performs 20th century marches, transcriptions of classical composers and hits from the popular musicals of our time. The concerts are free and accessible to all audiences.

The Feast of Lights is a service of worship celebrating –in spoken word, tableaux, song and orchestral offering–the birth of Jesus Christ. At the service’s conclusion, the traditional Ceremony of Candles, adapted from an ancient rite, symbolizes the spreading of the light of Christ’s message by the twelve apostles throughout the world.

Feast of Lights VigilNovember 6Memorial Chapel, 7:30 p.m.

Culminating a month of spiritual and musical preparation, tonight’s Vigil celebration, introduced in 1974, serves as a prelude to The Feast of Lights, a nationally recognized Christmas celebration presented by the University of Redlands’ School of Music.

Underscored by choral meditations and acclamations, the Candle Lighting Ceremony proclaims through scripture and ancient text the coming of the Messiah. Illuminating Memorial Chapel until the concluding performance of “Silent Night” at the final Feast of Lights presentation, a single lighted candle serves as a constant reminder of the significance of the events that mark the season.

This is the first University of Redlands Community College Festival. The evening will end with a combined choir of over 300 singers conducted by guest clinician Rod Eichenberger.
