\VRIGHT CHURCH CELEBRA. TES 100 YEARS!AfORE RE1J.fI1VISCENSES OF WRIGHT'S FIRST CENTURY

Those first years and decades in the life of Wright Church were not easy-but werelived by ministers and parishioners with great and faithful confidence in the future and inChrist's leading.

As early as the 1910-1914 ministry of Rev.Minnie Dickinson, plans were laid for thecongregation to have its own building. William Kerr and .John Fisher donated adjoininglots on this site and the church purchased an additional 20 ft. x 85 ft lot from Mr. Fisherfor $20.00. The congregation borrowed $3,000 from the Home Missionary Society, and thefirst edifice was a roofed basement church, completed in 1913. In 1914, the Rev. B.W. Riceof Caldwell agreed to become the new Pastor, half-time for $50.00 a month. Two ice creamsocials were held during the year netting $16.00,and one candy sale gathered $2.50-all tohelp support the church. It is also noted that for a number of years, the women of thecongregation had a concession stand serving home-cooked meals at the Idaho State Fair tohelp with the church's finances. Also during this early period, Rev. Reuben Wrightdonated an organ to the church, to further the music program.

In 1915, tbe congregation secured a building loan of $800 from the CongregationalChurch Building Society to build their first "real" church building. Later that year, theframe structure was completed and would serve the congregation for many years, By 1923,'Vright Church had grown to 81 members and was out of debt. An adjacent lot wasbought, and the church was mortgaged to build a parsonage. Rev. L. G. Knight, wbo wasthen the Pastor, drew the plans which included a basement with fireplace, where the youngpeople could hold their meetings. He also did most of the carpenter's work on theparsonage.

The church continued to grow steadily over the next many years. These churchbuildings also served the fast-growing Franklin Community. Franklin School did not havean auditorium at the time, and the church was used- for many community and schoolactivities, including plays and Baccalanreate and Graduation Services.

Over the next 30 years, the church's ministers included Rev. L. G. Knight (1919-25),Rev. Thomas McCamant (1925-29), Rev. Carl Calhoun (1929-30), Interim Minister Rev.James Hedges in 1930, Rev. Roy B. Damron (1931-35), and Rev. F. J. Renz, 1935-42.

And then ..•during the Annual Congregational Meeting and potluck dinner, January14.1940. somethlnz happened that would usher in a whole new era for Wright Church .•..

--Joan Marks continues her rehab at Hillcrest's Boise Health and Rehab Center.She hopes to be back home soon.

100 YearsCountdown to 10/10/10

Most of you have read and heard that Wright Church celebrates its 100 years of loveand service and history this year at this same location. A committee has formed and plans toorganize events and special worship services over the next several months leading to the datewe have chosen to officially recognize as our anniversary date, October 10. 2010, (10/10/10).

Among things being planned:

--Sunday, May 23: An invitation to all who have ever sung in the choir at Wright to bewith us for a reunion and to sing during the service

-Third Annual luau and Silent Auction on Saturday, June 19.--An invitation to all those who were married here in our church to have their vows

renewed on Sunday. June 27.-Sunday July 11: An invitation to all living former ministers and spouses to join us and

participate in worship.-EKtra-Special flCnristmas In August" on Sunday, August 15 which will feature some

wonderful keepsake gifts that the Women's Fellowship Craft Group has made.--And a reunion of people who were baptized here and aU of those who have attended

Sunday School and Youth Groups on Sunday, September 19.--We are in the process of scheduling many more special events, displays of historical

materials, etc., to be held in addition to all of our regular annual events- all culminating in aspecial weekend on October 10. These will be announced in more detail as the planningevolves.

All of this will cost money of course •..ln preparation for that, the 10/10/10 Committeewelcomes donations in support of our efforts and will soon embark on A Dime Drive("10/10/10" cent pieces) A very special "bank" will be available soon for those interested indonating their change to help defray the cost of this year long celebration.

As we continue our planning for the coming year, everyone is invited to welcome backpast members and visitors and bring any old photos and articles of activities at Wright Churchto the committee. In coastal Connecticut, where I currently live, February is a timealternately of freezing and mud. We are prone to sudden snow squalls orequally sudden thaws where just walking across a street can meanskirting mud puddles from melted snow and tha wing ground. Often inFebruary as Iwatch people enter the warm church building on a Sundaymorning, 1can actually see their shoulders drop and their bodies relax asthey shrug off cold or wet and enter the welcome warmth of om'sanctuary. For a little while at least, they can rest secure and dry beforetackling whatever the elements throw at us on any particular day,

It occurred to me that during the week between worship services,many other people come into om' building to find a place of safety andwarmth. Twelve step groups of various kinds, a PFLAG group, twocommunity choirs, La Leche, a community youth group, a program forthose who have recently been released from prison, children practicingand playing recitals and others, Then there are the people W110 comeseeking help, from food to counseling. Our presence on this busy citystreet comer has an impact on hundreds of people we often do not see onSunday, whose names we do not know. They, too, have a place inChrist's Church. They, too, are part of our congregation, and ourstewardship of this building is for all of us.

The same can be said for our Wright Churchbuilding. Numerous church and community groups useour building every week This is a part of our continuingministry in this place for the past 100 years.

Let us pray for our congregation and ourstewardship of God's resources, and also for everyonewho passes through our church's doors.

Along with whole world, we have been shocked and heartbroken at the devastatingloss of life and property in Haiti. We all have seen online and on TV the many ways we canhelp. Please also know that all the resources of our Church's Outreach and EmergencyRelief Programs are hard at work raising funds and serving in person in Haiti.

If you would like to help financially, your gift to the nce's Haiti Earthquake ReliefFund will enable our Haitian and International and Ecumenical partners to offerimmediate emergency help, as well as long-term recovery and rehabilitation to the familiesand communities devastated by this tragedy.
