What is Tobacco? Tobacco is a plant grown for its leaves and contains nicotine, an
ingredient that can lead to addiction, which is why so many
people who use tobacco find it difficult to quit. People can
smoke, chew, or sniff tobacco.

highlight the harmful effects of smoking on cardiovascular system.
The global tobacco epidemic kills more than seven million
people each year, nearly 900,000 of whom are non-smokers
who die because they have been exposed to second-hand
smoke. Tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke
contribute about 17% of all deaths due to heart disease.
Second hand smokers are in greatest danger and most risk for

What are the effects of Tobacco on heart and blood vessels?
· Raised blood pressure and heart rate
· Increased bad cholesterol levels in the blood
· Damage to the inner surface of the arteries, which is thought to be a contributing
factor to atherosclerosis (fat deposition on the artery walls)
· Increased risk of heart attack and stroke due to blockage of the blood vessels
supplying to the heart and brain
· There is 80% increased risk of coronary artery disease in active active smokers
· Up to one-quarter of all strokes are directly attributable to cigarette smoking

motivation to quit
· 20 minutes after the last cigarette, the heart rate comes back to normal value.
· 1 day after the last cigarette, nicotine is no longer in the body.
· 2 days without smoking: the sense of smell and taste become better.
· After 3 to 9 months without tobacco, breathing progresses.
· 1 year after stopping, the risk of myocardial infarction is halved.
· 5 years after quitting, the risk of lung cancer decreases by 50%.
· 10 to 20 years later, life expectancy is the same as that of non-smokers.
