Page 5: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Who makes the policy?● The school board of education makes the

decision of wearing the formal uniforms● At the beginning of the school year the

leader of school districts makes the decision● The ideas from the leader of districts gets

sent to the School Board of Education● The uniform policy gets reviewed about

annually, it gets thought about every year.

Page 6: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Why was the policy changed?● We interviewed teachers on why

spirit wear was taken away● People were wearing spirit wear

inappropriately ● They also said students weren’t

following school rules.

Alternative Policies

Page 10: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Alternative policy #1● Winton Woods Middle School

(WWMS) should wear spirit tops with uniform pants.

Page 11: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Advantages of 1st alternative policy

● Alternative policy 1 allows students express themselves through spirit wear.

● The spirit wear will make it harder for other students to identify who is wearing the same polo shirts.

Page 12: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Disadvantages of 1st alternative policy● Some students might wear spirit wear tops

inappropriately.● Bullying may be an issues if students are

wearing uniform tops instead of spirit wear tops.

● Spirit wear may not be in the budget for some families.

Page 13: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Alternative policy #2● WWMS should wear jeans with polo shirts.● The jeans should be at finger tip length.● The students can have holes in their jeans

but if it is showing too much skin they should cover it up.

Page 14: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Advantages Of 2nd Alternative Policy● WWMS can be diverse with wearing jeans by

having different colored jeans verses the same 2 color pants.

● WWMS can show more style with the type of jeans we wear.

● Both jeans and uniform have the same style but with jeans you can wear different colors.

● With the uniform pants you can only wear khaki or navy so the jeans will make a difference.

Page 15: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Disadvantages of 2nd alternative policy● Jeans may not be in the budget of some

families:○ The average cost of the jeans for girls are

$20-$30.○ The average cost of the jeans for boys are

$30-$40.● Students may wear ripped jeans.

Page 16: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Alternative policy # 3● WWMS should not

have a uniform policy.

Page 17: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Advantages Of 3rd Alternative Policy

● This can show our creativity because having a certain outfit could just show our peers our personality.

● It will be more of a relaxed setting because we all look different which will allow students to focus better on academics.

● A relaxed setting will make a positive impact by the focus of the students.

Page 18: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Disadvantages of 3rd alternative policy● The disadvantages of 3rd alternative is that

people will get bullied because of what they wear.

● Some finance issues may occur so some students don’t have clothes other than the uniform to wear.

Disadvantages● Students might wear spirit wear tops inappropriately.● Students may get bullied because they are wearing

uniform tops instead of spirit wear tops.● Spirit wear may be too expensive for some families.● There are individual consequences if students breaks the

rules of wearing spirit wear. All students will not have to suffer.

Page 31: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

The Process: Is it Constitutional?● Our policy would need to go through the Winton

Woods City School District School Board. ● The uniform policy is renewed every year.● Leaders in the district gives their ideas then it is taken

to the School board of Education for responses.● The School Board of Education also uses the Anti-

Bullying policy which is a law policy. This policy helps the school board of education make the decision.

Page 33: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Plan of Action

Page 34: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Who will be influenced individually?● The following people are people we may talk to to support

our policy further.● Teachers will be influenced by the strength of the arguments

we present.● Although our survey results show that many of them do not

want to change the uniform policy, we may be able to convince them that changing the policy will be beneficial for the students and the education process.

● The parents will support the uniform policy change due t the argument that they might be able to save money because the spirit wear can be less than the uniforms.

Page 35: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Continued...

● The school board of education will be influenced by the results of students that want spirit wear back.

● Another group that would be influenced could be the PTA. We would meet with them and explain to them our action and they could help us reach out to the parents and teachers.

Page 36: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Who will be influenced governmental?

Our school’s board of education would influenced because they would have to put the new uniform policy in the handbooks. They would have to make new documentation of the new uniform policy.

Page 37: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Action process

● Involve the PTA and get their support.● Make a petition to take to the school board.● Make a presentation of our outcome to the

school board to get the uniform policy changed.

Page 38: Winton Woods MS- Uniform Policy

Proposed Action

● If the school board of education does not approve our policy then our next action will be to organize a show of support. We will ask everyone that supports to wear spirit wear to the event.● Hopefully this will change their minds if

the original process does not work.
