Student Dress Code
Uniform & Appearance Policy
Introducon
As part of Ormeau Woods State High School’s commitment to providing a safe and suppor ve learning environment for all members of
its community the school has adopted a student dress code which reflects the school community standards and balances the right of
individual students with the best interests of the whole school community. The school uniform is viewed as integral in encouraging a
sense of self-esteem, belonging and self-discipline in our students.
Relevant Legislaon and Policy
This policy has been developed in accordance with the Educa on (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Sec ons 360-363) [“The Act”], the
Department of Educa on and Training policy SMS-PR-022: Student Dress Code and Sun Safe Strategy in rela on to implemen ng
student dress codes in Queensland State Schools. It explains and documents the standards of acceptable dress at Ormeau Woods SHS.
A copy of the Uniform and Appearance Policy is provided to parents at the me of enrolment as part of the Enrolment Agreement and
a:er periodic revision.
The Ormeau Woods State High School Uniform Policy is endorsed by the school Parents and Ci zens Associa on (P & C).
Expectaons of Ormeau Woods SHS Students
In accordance with this uniform policy, students are to wear the formal uniform or sports uniform when a<ending school, whilst
travelling to and from school or when engaging in out of school ac vi es. Students are to wear the formal uniform for all formal
occasions such as excursions, public appearances, awards nights, school photos or other school func ons as specified.
Consistent with this policy students are required to present at school in a neat and dy manner at all mes. By adhering to the Uniform
Policy our students con nue to promote a posi ve image of the school to our local community and demonstrate that the school has
high expecta ons of its students.
Whilst this policy seeks to assist students and parents by iden fying requirements and expecta ons for as many uniform and
appearance items as possible, it should be noted that where a student’s appearance and/or uniform may not be in keeping with the
spirit of this policy and the school and communi es values and expecta ons a conflict resolu on/ media on process involving the
student, parent/caregiver, Principal and a P and C Representa ve may occur.

Ormeau Woods State High School and the Parents and Ci zens’ Associa on have endorsed the
following expecta ons of students with regard to uniform and personal appearance:
Senior Formal Uniform (Years 10-12)
• Sky blue formal shirt (with school logo)
• Ink blue skirt – minimum length mid-thigh to maximum length upper calf
• Ink blue dress shorts – minimum length mid- thigh to maximum length upper calf
• Ink blue long pants (op onal)
• Skort (op onal) – minimum length mid-thigh to maximum length upper calf
*Note: All items without the school logo are to be free of logos, s�pes or markings
Junior Formal Uniform (Years 7-9)
• White formal shirt (with school logo)
• Ink blue skirt – minimum length mid-thigh to maximum length upper calf
• Ink blue dress shorts – minimum length mid-thigh to maximum length upper calf
• Ink blue long pants (op onal)
• Skort (op onal) – minimum length mid-thigh to maximum length upper calf
• School e or scarf (op onal)

Sports Uniform (All Years)
• Sports polo shirt (with school logo)

Winter Uniform (All Years)
During the colder months the following items are acceptable:
• School jumper or jacket with school logo only
• Ink blue long pants free of logos, stripes or markings
• Ink blue or black stockings
• Ink blue scarf
*Note: Work wear pants, beanies, balaclavas, knit caps with ear flaps or other similar headwear are not permi�ed
Undershirts
Undershirts (e.g. T Shirts, Tank Tops or singlets) must be not be visible outside/through the uniform)
Footwear
Socks
• White crew sock free of logos, stripes or markings
• Minimum length 5cm above the ankle, maximum length base of calf
Shoes
• Black leather lace up shoes or black leather joggers that are below the ankle
• Black shoe laces only
*Note
• No ankle boots, work boots, Doc Mar�ns, ballet flats or other shoes which do not cover the upper part of the foot are permi�ed.
• Students are permi�ed to change into approved footwear in order to access the curriculum. These include; sports shoes for sport/
HMS lessons, steel capped work boots in Industrial Design and Technology lessons or ballet/ dance shoes for Dance lessons.

Jewellery
• One flat ring
• Two (2) pairs of plain studs or sleepers worn in the ears (studs no more than 5mm in diameter, sleepers no more than 10mm in
diameter)
• Spacers worn in the ears are to be clear only, flat and solid, no more than 10mm in diameter
• One watch
• One item of necklace jewellery may be worn if it is of cultural or religious significance following nego a on with the school
Principal and parents/ caregivers. It must be long enough to be concealed out of sight under the shirt. Any item of approved
jewellery may s ll be required to be removed in subjects or ac vi es for safety reasons under Workplace Health and Safety
legisla on.
• A zero tolerance policy is applied to facial pierced jewellery and adornments (other than ears) and other visible body piercings.
Jewellery in facial piercings include but are not limited to nose, lip, chin, eyebrow and tongue piercings. Clear plas c facial
piercings are not permi<ed.
Hair
• Hairstyles must be neat, clean, dy and well-maintained.
• Extreme hairstyles or significant varia ons in hair length (e.g. Mohawks, buzz cuts, shaved sec ons, tracks, and rat’s tails or
bright unnatural hair colours are not acceptable. Natural toning only is permi<ed).
• Hair ribbons or hair bands in any of the school’s colours may be worn (sky blue, ink, gold or white). Other hair accessories such
as: bandanas, beanies, brightly coloured or pa<erned headwear, aras, hair claws, feathers, beads or bun nets are not permi<ed.
• Long hair must be ed back or in a hair net for all prac cal lessons and ac vi es as required by Workplace Health and Safety
requirements or teacher direc on.
Make-Up and Nails
• Discreet sun factor make up may be worn as part of the Sun Safety in Secondary Schools guidelines.
• Eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara, lips ck/lip-gloss and other make-up are not permi<ed.
• Clear nail polish is permi<ed. Acrylic nails or French ps must be of a clear colour.
*Note Students will be required to remove offending items.
Ta3oos
In keeping with our school culture, Ormeau Woods State High School has a no visible ta<oo policy. The school acknowledges that
ta<oos are part of some religious and cultural beliefs and prac ces. Students who have a visible ta<oo are required to have it
covered at all mes whilst at school or on school ac vi es.
Sun Safety
In accordance with the Sun Safety In Secondary Schools guidelines:
• Students are required to wear a sun safe hat when outdoors during the school day. This includes during lunch breaks and curriculum
me.
• Sun safe hats (i.e. cap or broad brimmed hat) must be free from offensive language, symbols or logos.
• Students who are in the sun but not par cipa ng in prac cal ac vi es during lunch breaks will be directed to u lise shaded areas
where possible.
• Students will be provided access to sunscreen during lunch breaks and curriculum me.
Out of Uniform Procedure
Not wearing the uniform correctly is a breach of the Uniform Policy.
• Prior to the commencement of the school day any student out of uniform is required to report to the Student Advisors. If the
student has a note from the parent/caregiver the Student Advisor may excuse a temporary inability to comply with the Uniform and
Appearance Policy.
• In most circumstances students may be offered appropriate items from the bank of spare uniforms held at the School for this
purpose.
Consequences of not wearing the correct uniform
If a student does not a<end Ormeau Woods SHS or school related ac vi es in the correct uniform, Educa on Queensland Policy
(October 2006) fully supports the Principal or nominees in the following ac ons:
Students who fail to follow correct procedures or who do not present documenta on from their Student Advisor regarding alterna ve
arrangements will have one of the following sanc ons imposed:
• Complete a 20 minute deten on during school hours or a:er school hours. Parents/caregivers will be no fied prior to any
deten ons occurring a:er school; or
• Be prevented from a<ending or par cipa ng in any ac vity for which a student is represen ng the school; or
• Be prevented from a<ending or par cipa ng in any school ac vity that is not an essen al school educa onal program.
If the student persistently fails to wear the correct uniform, appropriate conflict resolu on/media on strategies are used with parents/
caregivers, the student, P and C Representa ve and School’s Administra on present. Where a student wilfully and deliberately chooses
not to adhere to the Uniform Policy and do not qualify for an exemp on their ac ons may breach the school’s Responsible Behaviour
Plan.
Exempons
The exemp ons to this policy include students whose physical impairments prevent their ability to conform to the Dress Code or
students whose families have religious or cultural grounds for conscien ous objec on. Grounds for non-compliance with the student
dress code will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Principal.
Newly enrolled students or families experiencing genuine hardship may contact the Principal to make arrangements for the loan of
clothing for a limited period only.
