In his late 20s, he purchased land in Independence Township, a rural community in Beaver County Pa. “I was young and unaware of what the Lord had prepared for me in the years ahead,” Larry said. Using timber from the wooded acreage, Larry built a log home. Then, he started making functional items for the family’s home and his woodshop started to materialize. f you’ve been to Christmas in the Woods, you know there’s truth in these words from W.T. Ellis. We appreciate the opportunity God has given us to host such an exciting holiday event

for 23 years. Many folks have told us they plan their yearly calendar around Christmas in the Woods. Some parents have even asked their children not to schedule weddings in October. We’re humbled that the festival has become a traditional gathering place for so many families and friends. To all those who have Christmas in their hearts, the crafters, vendors, entertainers and staff welcome you to this magical spot in eastern Ohio. While you enjoy the shopping, entertainment and food, spread the love of God to one another. That’s what Christmas in the heart is all about. Merry Christmas and God Bless “Everyone,”

he plates that Brenda DeMass created were put to use for her

daughter’s wedding, her mother-in law’s funeral, and her grandson’s baptism. A ceramic communion set she made in the beginning of her pottery career and donated to her former church reminds Brenda of how closely her life and art are intertwined. “After more than 45 years of creating art, my early work now seems primitive,” she said. “I see my life’s history unfolding in my work and reflected in it. I’m humbled God gave me this talent and gift.” She tells her story here: I was always interested in working with clay. Brian Heard, my art teacher at Ellet High School, encouraged me to continue making art. I won some awards in school for my work, and I was hooked. Then I went to Kent State as an art major, but decided I didn’t want to teach. Two years of prerequisites just to get my hands on clay didn’t appeal to me.

After marriage and three children, I told my husband I wanted to pursue my dream. I enrolled in classes at the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center and began refining my craft. While taking classes there, a fellow potter encouraged me to join her in selling our wares at a local art show. Despite my fear of rejection, I gathered up what little inventory I had accumulated for the art show. My pottery was well received and sold out almost immediately!

OLD-FASHIONED Christmas IN THE WOODS 7

RETIREMENT HAS BEEN GREAT, THANKS TO SERENDIPITY

Sharon Heiser

haron Heiser and Deb King were visiting friends when they fell in

love with rural northern Pennsylvania. It wasn’t long before they took the plunge and purchased land for a vacation home. Life promptly delivered an unexpected turn, and they found themselves facing early retirement. Going with the moment, they decided to make a leap from city life to country life. Learning to live on the land, raise crops, and sell goods at a local farmer’s market became their focus. While visiting a regional fiber show in 1996, Deb discovered some unusually soft knitted goods. At the same time, Sharon was exploring an exhibit of exceptionally cute, fuzzy animals. According to Sharon, the fiber from the alpacas she was admiring was the source for the yarn in the goods Deb had found. It wasn’t long before Sharon and Deb eagerly added two alpacas to their growing farm!

That was the start of ANNADELE ALPACAS. Sharon said, “As alpaca farmers, we became serious breeders and entered our alpacas in competitions. Our alpacas were winning awards and producing large amounts of fiber that required shearing every spring.” Since Deb and Sharon have always had a knack for crafts, it was natural for them to try their hand at spinning the alpaca fiber into yarn and then to start knitting and weaving the yarn. Alpaca fiber is as soft and luxurious as cashmere. It’s also five times warmer than wool and hypo allergenic. This makes for very high quality yarns and wonderful hand knitted and woven creations. “Bringing our high quality alpaca hand crafts to the public seemed like it was worth a try,” Sharon said. “We started having a great time telling people about our funny and fascinating animals and introducing them to the luxury of alpaca products. And…you loved it!”

8 OLD-FASHIONED Christmas IN THE WOODS Brenda DeMass continued from page 2

I realized I could do what I love and make money at it! After that, my husband was all in. He helped me set up a studio in our home. I christened my business Earthen Vessels Pottery. The name speaks to my natural style since I like to work in earth tones and am inspired by nature. The name also has a biblical meaning from the Bible verse found in II Corinthians 4:7, which reads “but we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God and not us.” It really has been the Lord’s work the whole time step by step. When I was ready, he opened the door. Brenda describes her pottery as mostly functional. One of her casserole dishes, for example, can be used for its intended purpose and also be displayed in one’s home. I start with a clay body (a good “throwing” clay) that has been formulated to add beauty and strength to the piece. It’s a low fire stoneware clay body. I have to fire it in an electric kiln which is oxidation, but I really admire gas fired pieces which are reduction. I’m always experimenting to get the perfect “look.” All my work is oven safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher safe when loaded carefully. And all glazes are lead free. Besides exhibiting at many, many shows, I’ve also done consignment work and briefly made prototypes for Crazy Mountain. For a period of time, I had a studio in a Century Homes Association house off Tallmadge circle where I live. However, with three very active children, I opted to return to a home-based business. Going to the studio at 3 a.m. to check a firing got old after a couple years! My selling philosophy is to appeal to the average buyer, i.e., someone like me who loves handcrafted pottery items but can’t spend a fortune on such items. While my daughters have suggested I raise prices, I want my stoneware pottery to be affordable. Now that I’m semi-retired, I’ll continue reflecting on the thousands of pieces I’ve crafted out of clay. I’ve been told my pottery has traveled all over the world. Maybe I’ll retire soon and do the same thing! Special thanks to my wonderful husband. I couldn’t have done this without your support.

For 20 years, Deb and Sharon have raised alpacas, harvested fiber, and created handmade alpaca products. They continue to pursue their ‘retirement career’ because they love bringing famously warm and comfortable socks and other beautiful wearables to festival goers. Some of the fleece is now handled by a New England co-op where the socks are made. To this day, the duo still hand dye their yarns. And they hand knit and hand weave their yarns into garments and accessories—one stitch at a time. Deb and Sharon keep the creations fresh and exciting by taking time to learn new fiber techniques, which leads to new designs. In 2017, hand felting appears in specialty bags and jackets. There are also stylish new hats and fresh new colors for gloves and wraps. “We have many customers who return year after year for our unique handcrafts. Along the way, many have become friends, and our business has become an extended community that we cherish,” Sharon said. “Serendipity offered up the greatest retirement ever, and you help us sustain it. Thank you!” Shop year round at: annadelealpacas.com

URGE TO CREATE STARTED AT CHILDHOOD AND CONTINUES TODAY

Michele Burick

ichele Burick’s self-described obsession as a “maker” began

in childhood, well before the current “maker” movement. She recalls always being busy creating things, from houses out of sand to cabins with Lincoln Logs to potholders. Her obsession continued with art in high school. The urge to create persisted into Michele’s adulthood. When her three children were young, she made Halloween costumes, Christmas wreaths and other crafts. From there, Michele started selling her handmade wares at small craft shows in schools and churches. These experiences led her to craft shows in malls. As the children got older, she participated in mall shows outside her home state of Ohio, including Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Throughout the years, Michele has developed a step-by-step process that’s productive and efficient. She makes all the heads at once, doing the same for each part. Once all the pieces are ready, full assembly takes

place. Now in her 11th year at Christmas in the Woods, this artisan has learned a thing or two. First, Pittsburgh themed items are among her best sellers. Michele loves finding Pittsburgh clothes at resale shops and flea markets to create even more Pittsburgh offerings. Second, she’s found buyers return to purchase additional sizes of a particular product line to form families. Here, Michele shares details about her creations: Customers tell me they’ve taken the dolls back to their native country or sent them to someone they know in another country. My dolls have made their way to Russia, England, Australia, and several other countries, as well as throughout the U.S. In the 1990s, snowmen were a big sensation. You could never have too many snowmen. To this day, I still sell all types of snowmen. I also construct scarecrows. My husband Barry engineered a wooden body frame so they’re self standing

I t is her commanding presence and explosive stage personality along with her dynamic and versatile voice

that has made Vanessa Campagna a fan favorite. From as early as 6 years old Vanessa has entertained many people during the Christmas Holiday season. She has brought smiles to the hundreds of thousands that celebrate Light Up Night each year in Pittsburgh. Many have seen Vanessa on WPXI-TV and along the route of the annual Macy’s Celebrate the Seasons Parade in Pittsburgh, while others have heard her Christmas music on Froggy Radio’s Hometown Christmas and Lite Rock 92.9. Her appearances in the B.E. Taylor Christmas Specials were explosive while her own headlined Christmas Concert has become a highly anticipated annual event at the Beaver Valley Mall and other venues around the region. Vanessa performs both beautiful Christmas standards which we have all come to love as well as new and exciting Christmas music of today. Her Christmas show will warm your heart and put you in a festive Christmas Spirit. “It wouldn’t be Christmas without seeing one of Vanessa’s Christmas shows” said one industry insider. “Her stage presence is unbelievable and her personality is contagious!” Most recently, Vanessa continues to work in Nashville with the best of the best, singing, producing, and writing music with A listers such as, multi #1 hit songwriter and producer Derek George, Liz Rose, Bryan White, Jonathan Perkins and mega-hit maker Desmond Child. It was Desmond, that took her to Miami, and introduced her to the Latin Music scene, where she shared the stage & top billing with Gloria Estefan at the LAMUSA Awards. WoodhavenNew Designs for 2017!

I would like to extend to you an invitation to join us at the 2017 Christmas in the Woods Festival. My products are unique in the Arts and Craft business because I feature wood products each incorporating Hand Sculpted artwork. My pieces are all original designs that utilize a marble sculpting compound, hand detailing and time intensive antiquing process, which in turn gives them a very rich, old world appearance. As an added benefit to all of my customers, I finish all the pieces for either indoor or outdoor display and actively copyright each one to assure you that you will not find anything like them anywhere else. Please stop by for our regular demonstrations and experience works of art that are pleasing to behold and a joy to own and collect. Thank You

THERE’S PLENTY OF SOUP FOR YOU

Greg and Mary Kay Williams

o Soup for you! We all know this from the Seinfeld series; but of

course, Greg and Mary Kay Williams, owners of Cooke Tavern Soups would NEVER say this to you at Christmas in the Woods. We love serving and visiting with our soup friends at this awesome festival every October. Cooke Tavern Soups is a second generation family business. Mary Ellen Williams, a former home economics teacher created the business in her kitchen in 1989. She and her husband, Allan began marketing the healthy freeze dried soup mixes at local craft shows. The business, Log Cabin Soups was such a success that they soon found themselves out and about most weekends. The retirees soon decided they wanted to retire once again! Log Cabin Soups had a steady following and Greg Williams, a mechanical engineer living near State College, PA with his wife Mary Kay decided they’d like to continue the family business and purchased it from Greg’s parents in 2000. He left his career in ultrasound manufacturing to focus on manufacturing the soups and growing the business to include marketing to wholesale customers. Greg and Mary Kay decided they would like to rename the soups after their 1808 historic home that was

once a Tavern—Cooke Tavern. They completely restored a wonderful Georgian brick home and property that some contractors suggested they tear down and start over. The property had no heat or plumbing, but they turned it into a successful Bed and Breakfast. Since they were used to putting love, hard work and dedication into the restoration, they applied that same tenacity to creating a successful family business.

Cooke Tavern Soups began with only six recipes but has grown to include fifteen fantastic recipes. Our passion is to provide you with quality healthy ingredients for your ‘soup starter’. Some of our customers’ all time favorites are: Candlelight Corn Chowder, Mi Madre Marie’s Chicken Tortilla, named in honor of Greg’s

mom, Mary Ellen as well as Henna Marie’s Potato & Cheese, named for our crazy rescue dog, Henna. We continue to create new recipes and love to hear your suggestions. Each package of soup you enjoy is packed with care and love by our Amish employees and Lisa who cares for you if you call or order on line. All our soups are special because of what they have in the package and also for what we leave out! There is never any salt, MSG or preservatives. The ‘gourmet in the pot’ taste really paid off when they were selected by celebrity Chef Giada de Laurentiis at a Metro DC show as one of Giada’s favorite things which featured Cooke Tavern on the Today Show! In 2013 we received Gluten Free certification for many of our soups. We have been proud to be part of the Christmas in the Woods since 2001 and are amazed and grateful for the fantastic loyal customers we have found ‘in the woods’. We can’t wait to see you this year at booth #61.

he Ambridge Area High School Steel Band, under the direction of Todd Hartman, has received national recognition

for its outstanding musical ability, unique style, and infectious energy. Since its inception in 1988, the steel drum program has grown from five students participating after school to an average of sixty band students. Their current musical repertoire reflects a diverse collection of styles including traditional calypso & soca, big band swing, afro-cuban, latin-jazz, classical, pop, and tropical-rock. The steel band was one of only three high school groups from across the nation selected to perform at two of the American Association of School Administrators National Conferences, one of which gave them an opportunity to open up for Steven Spielberg’s keynote address in San Francisco. Additionally, they have been to three National School Board Association Conferences, and most recently, performed for over 9,000 engineers and vendors from all over the world at the annual Association for Iron and Steel Technology’s International Conference. The steel band has been invited to perform for cultural outreach assemblies at thirty different school districts located around the Pittsburgh area and has performed at twelve different higher learning institutions. Their most memorable experience came when they played with the marching band in the 2004 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. It marked the first time in the 115 year history of the parade that a steel band combined with a marching band.

and durable. I use recycled flannels and jeans so they look real. Using the wooden body frame, I also fashioned a large moose using repurposed clothing. Requests came in and I made more. Thereafter, I discovered people also wanted smaller versions. Customers share stories of all the things they’ve done with their moose creations. One person took a moose to a Buffalo Bills tailgate party; another brought his on a boat. And at a barbecue, a moose was dressed with an apron and chef’s hat. Our moose buyers are fun people. We make the moose and they take it from there. Feedback is gratifying. Christmas in the Woods attendees are the best. They’re always laughing and taking selfies with the moose in our booth. Just in case you wanted to know, the plural of moose is simply moose. It’s challenging keeping up with trends. Still, when something catches my eye, I tweak it using my imagination and style. Sometimes fans request special creations such as a pirate, doctor, or a boxer. I always try to accommodate special requests.
