Bob Day has taken on the important role of webmaster of our club website. In addition to posting photographs, newsletters, and meeting notices and other helpful information and links, our website is the face of our club on the world wide web. Our club has received inquiries from people near and far. Someone looking for information on a Wisconsin woodcarver whose signed artwork they have acquired, or people looking for an outlet for basswood or tools or donations or sales of carving equipment. A variety of messages come to us from our web portal. The club even had an inquiry from a California man seeking information on his woodcarver uncle, who just happened to be a founder of the club almost 50 years ago. *********************************************************************************************

August Club Report

Club Carving Class News

Interested in taking a Bird Carving, Chip Carving or Sharpening class locally in 2020?The Club is asking its members for commitments on which specific classes should be offered & when. Classes would be set up at a location in the Appleton to Oshkosh area. We have several excellent instructors in mind. Typical cost would be approximately $55 for a one day Tool Sharpening class (includes tools to practice on!); $80 for a two day Chip Carving Class; and $150 for a four day Bird Carving class. Before the club contacts a master carver and makes a commitment for our club to sponsor a class, the club will need commitments of interest from enough club members. What is a "enough"? Depending upon the class, six to ten students. Serious Interest Sign-Up Sheets will be at our Sunday meeting. Please let the club know this Sunday!

President Tim Gosz opened our meeting on August 25th with 29 in attendance. Tim related the Board decision to raise the admission fee at the 2020 Chippers show to $4. The Club Table had 2 openings (both were filled by the meeting's end.) Club member Ron Wisniewski said hello to the club (Since our meeting, Ron has passed away; see his obituary on page 3). The Treasurer's report followed. Three Carving Class Interest Sheets were available for meeting attendees to express their desire for Bird, Chip Carving and/or sharpening classes. Upcoming presentations were noted. The October meeting will feature a variety of "Holding Devices" for carvers including carving screws, bench hooks, rotating easels and clamping set ups. Chris Rigotti, Keith Melzer, Lee Belanger, Gene Bengel, Tim Gosz, and Cedric Richeson all volunteered to bring devices for display and explanation of their use and working. Other club members are invited to add to the October presentation with their own unique devices. The possibility of a future club project to make a holding device may be explored at the October meeting. Other confirmed presentations are a Leather Pyrography demonstration in November and Used Tool Sale in December to go along with our Annual Potluck. A tentative presentation on Adhesives & Finishes for January will be explored. Linda Gomach and Barb Behm have volunteered to be recorders at our 2020 show. Steve Binder will fill a new position as "Ribbon Runner" to assist the Judging Process. The meeting concluded with Library Time and Show 'N Tell (How I spent My Summer Vacation.) See Page 8 for Show 'N Tell photos.

Don Weyenberg related an interesting story about how he had carved a pair of wooden shoes many years ago. Recently he received them because the departed owner had directed that upon his passing, the shoe carvings be returned to Don.

Pat Pelkey showed his "HummingMule". It's a Mule or Hummingbird depending on how you look at it!

Keith was a busy carver and showed bears, honey bears, and finished this caricature in a Rich Wetherbee class.

Steve Binder made this Black Crappie in a Josh Guge class.

Cedric Richeson showed leather bookmarks made with pyrography as examples for an upcoming Oshkosh Senior Center class.

Show 'N Tell or "How I spent My Summer Vacation"

Irene Petrik woodburnes many signs for people. Here is a recent example of a cedar board for an outdoor sign; it has 4 coats of spar varnish.

Bill Tuchscherer woodburned this deer hunt from a photo for his son's friend. Note that Bill created a "bark" perimeter by Hacking with a Dremel & then wood burning with a torch opposing edges of the basswood barkside to create "bark" all around his subject. Bill notes that burning faces, especially small faces is the hardest part.

Dick Christensen shows an example from his hummingbird class. Dick turned the flowers on his lathe. Dick noted that it was important to use acid based solder on the stems and stalks because it would clean off with soap & water for painting. As a primer paint lacquer was used. The carving was painted by steps of clean, seal, gesso, and paint.
