Musical Instrument Zoo 11 am - 12 noonSo you've always wanted to know what it feels and sounds like to play a trumpet? Come along and find out. Symphony musicians will be in the lobby of the Port Theatre to help kids huff and puff and have a blow, zing some strings and pull a bow, make a toot or have a hoot, or try some rhythm with percussion precision. Many a musician will declare that all it took was someone showing them an instrument for them to decide and declare that was what they wanted to be when they grew up - a violinist, cellist, flutist, trumpeter, etc.

Meet Conductor Pierre Simard in October and Composer Dorothy Chang in April! 11:45 am - 12:15 pm

Symphony Rehearsal 12:30 - 1:30 pmFind a seat in the theatre, take in a symphony re-hearsal, and watch as all the musicians and their instruments come together to make music. The conductor, Maestro Pierre Simard, will gesture with his baton and work with the musicians and guest artist to change a phrase here, add an ex-pression there, to give the music just the right feel, ready for the concert that evening!

Which year did Elvis die?

It's used but it's new to me. Used vehicles are my absolute favourite! I'm not really talking about old broken down beaters al-though they have their own charm. If you look at anything, vehicle wise, in the past 5-8 years you will find they have most of the bells and whistles you want or need. Used cars are nicely worn-in like a good baseball glove. They're comfortable. They are like your favorite old pair of jeans. In the first 3-5 years the worst of the depreciation is over so your investment will hold its value longer. Another reason used cars can be a good option (especially if you're a parent) is that you aren't likely to have a "freak-out" when your kids spill their soda or milk or whatever they may be drink-ing or munching on. With a used car it's just easier to relax and allow the vehicle to fulfill the basic intended purpose without being all fussy. If the car is older than 8 years, or so, chances are good the seller will be highly motivated to sell. This re-ally puts you, as the buyer, in the drivers seat and is yet another reason to look for used versus new. If the previous owner was organized, you can usu-ally get a hold of the service records. These docu-ments allow you a glimpse into the overall 'health' of the vehicle from time of first sale to the present. When reviewing the service history You may have to read between the lines a bit. For example if the car is a 4x4, has less than 80,000KM's and already has new shocks this tells you something. It might say to you, for example, this vehicle was used as someone's off-road 'toy' as opposed to having been off road only occasionally or, better yet, not at all. This very well could be a red flag. If the vehicle

was driven hard it will likely have other issues yet to emerge. Generally though, what you notice in service records is whether the vehicle seems to have been cared for or neglected. You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure this out. Think in terms of: was the oil changed regularly? Did they rotate the tires? This kind of thing. Just check the records and you will see a picture emerge. You might want to look for any expensive service items and ask about them. If, after reviewing the records, you still have questions you should have it checked out by your local mechanic just for the extra peace of mind. It is not expensive and he will go through a check list with you and let you know what you may be in for. If you're buying at a dealer think critically about whether the fact that they checked the vehicle is enough for you. Sometimes a 3rd party with no vested interest will see things in a different light. Finally, a used car can really be made to feel new again with things such as new tires, brakes and regular detailing. If you look at the total picture and take into consideration all the factors there is no reason a used vehicle can't be as good as new or even better!

Whats On MusicHarry Manx has been dubbed an "es-sential link" between the music of East and West, creating musical short sto-ries that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ra-gas. His unique sound is bewitching and deliciously addictive to listen to. Born on the Isle of Man, Manx spent his childhood in Canada and left in his teens to live in Europe, Japan, India and Brazil. He honed his hypnotic live show on street corners, in cafes, bars and at festivals. But it was Indian music that captured his attention and in the mid 80s he began a five-year tutelage with Rajasthani Indian musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Grammy win-ner with Ry Cooder for A Meeting by the River). Re-ceiving the gift of Bhatt's custom-made, self-designed Mohan Veena (a 20-stringed sitar/guitar hybrid) was the catalyst for Harry to forge a new path with his now signature east-meets-west style of music. While the mohan veena itself is beyond exotic, Manx uses it within traditional Western sound structures.

A successful touring performer, Manx has brought his "breathtaking" solo shows across Canada and into the USA, Australia, and Europe. He has appeared at many prestigious festivals, world-class theatres, con-cert halls and infamous Blues clubs around the globe. Playing the Mohan Veena, lap steel, harmonica, stomp box, and banjo, Manx quickly envelops the audience into what has been dubbed "the Harry Zone" with his warm vocals and the hauntingly beautiful melodies of his original songs.

It's in the live setting, Manx says, that the bridge between "heavenly" India and "earthy" American blues is most effectively built. "Indian music moves inward," he explains. "It's traditionally used in reli-gious ceremonies and meditation, because it puts you into this whole other place. But Western music has the ability to move out, into celebration and dance. So when we play the Indian stuff on stage, it has the tendency to draw people into something really deep; they'll get kind of quiet and spacey. Then we"ll play some more Western music, and it grounds them once more, they sort of come out of the mood the Indian music had put them in and get into the performance. I love to see that working – that effect on the audi-ence. My goal has always been to draw the audience as deep as possible into the music."

Manx is a prolific artist, releasing nine albums in a eight-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards and his mantel shelf also holds honours from the Canadian Folk Mu-sic Awards, Vancouver magazine Georgia Straight, and the South Australia Blues Society. He received CBC Radio's Great Canadian Blues Awards for 2007 and his albums have garnered five Juno nominations.

Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, add a sprinkle of gospel and some compelling grooves and you'll get Manx's unique "mysticssippi" flavour. It's hard to resist, easy to digest and keeps au-diences coming back for more.

me, a good strategy if things are getting tense, and more so when I, myself, am the source of the tension, is to get out of the house even if it's just to the backyard. The problem with this 'solution' is that it's not necessarily our home/family dynamic that creates tension in the oasis of suburbia. Of-ten it's the neighbours. In such cases, therefore, the supposed backyard "re-charge" becomes the backyard "un-ravel". Recently, for example, I came home after a particularly long and trying

We think of our home as a refuge from the world at large, a castle of our own, a place of safety and security. At the same time we struggle through spousal skirmishes and parental rows on a regular basis. The "job" of being a good spouse and good parent takes patience, consistency, and needs to come from a place of honesty and fairness. Part of the trial of life is to negotiate the sometimes rough waters of parenthood and be a good 'part-ner' while still keeping the family trust intact. For

HOME&LIFEDon't take a flamethrower to Sponge Bob. Just build a bigger fence. Sometimes home life can be a lot of work. We love our homes and we love and care for the people in our family. Still, I don't think I'm out on a limb when I say that the day to day reality of so called domestic bliss takes its toll on our sanity at times.

really fine but bearable. Two, no problem; I can deal with it. But get four of them together and be-lieve me construction noise sounds like Bach at his most melancholy. In those type of situations it takes the patience of a saint not to, in the words of Al Pacino from the movie "Scent of a Woman", "... Take a flamethrower to the place...." Rather than create conflict, though, and engage in be-haviour unconducive to my continued freedom I'm going to take to heart a quote related to me years ago by a realtor friend of mine. He said sim-ply: "Good fences make good neighbours." So if you know of a good fence-builder... let me know. I need less Sponge Bob in my life.

day. I was pretty tired out and the one thing I wanted to do was to fire up the barbeque, put on some relaxing music, crack something cold, en-joy my backyard and maybe relax for a few min-utes. Just a few minutes... so I could muster some strength. As it happened on that day I had one neigbour working on a construction project in his backyard and the neighbour on the other side had four "Sponge-Bobber" kids (as I like to call kids who, by all outward appearances, seem to have learned most of their lessons on normal behav-iour, from the TV cartoon character Sponge Bob) on the trampoline next door. I mean one very loud "Sponge Bobber" on a trampoline, fine... well not

HOME&LIFEThe problem with this 'solution' is that it's not necessarily our home/family dynamic

that creates tension in the oasis of suburbia. Often it's the neighbours.

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human

Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what starting salary are you looking for?” The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it.”

Your Computer Guy Article by Steve Duckett

Normally I do not do articles on specific viruses due to the fact that 100s of viruses are produced every day, but I feel that this particular one should be as it is a really bad one. The virus that I am talking about is an encryption virus. This means that when you get this particular virus, all your pictures and documents become unreadable, ren-dering them useless.

The producers of the virus give you the opportu-nity to pay a large amount of money to get your data back. They of course never do so and at that point you have given them your financial info opening up a whole new can of worms. One of the worst parts of this virus is that it encrypts any hard drives connected to your computer. So even if you are backing up your data it will also become in-fected as well. No one knows how this virus gets on your computer yet so the antiviruses out there aren’t catching it. My advice to you is simple…Disconnect your external hard drive as soon as you back up your data so at least you will have a good copy… just in case this virus hits your computer.

Of course you should talk to you children about money more than once a year but the goal of the program was to start a conversation at school so that parents could continue it at home.

We all know that money is important but conver-sations about money, like sex, was something that wasn't talked about in my grandmother’s time. The doors have opened on the discussion about sex but still money isn't something that many par-ents feel comfortable or qualified to talk about. Here are some simple ideas:

1. Plan a menu for the week. Write out a grocery list. Check the flyers for specials and go shopping together. Talk about how much it costs to feed the family for a week or how much you saved on specials.

2. Keep a change jar. When the jar starts to get full, sort the coins, roll them up and take them to the bank. It’s surprising how fast the change adds up.

3. Play a game of Monopoly. There’s lots of opportunity to talk about money while you play!

4. Watch one of these movies: Richie Rich, Material Girls or Field of Dreams or watch one of these TV shows: Storage Wars or Vacation House For Free.

5. Make a duct tape wallet or papier-mâché piggy bank.

6. Participate in a bottle drive or other fund raiser. Talk about how fundraising helps to make kids’ activities more affordable.

Activities are a catalyst for conversation. The conversation doesn’t have to be technical or per-sonal it just has to start.

My life has been an exciting journey with many interesting highlights along the way. I was born and raised in Victoria, leaving the Island in the mid 1980’s to manage the Bridge Construction Office for the Coquihalla Highway.

When the highway was completed, my boss suggested I return to university and complete my Engineering degree. I laughed at the idea…female engineers

were pretty rare in those days! The office crew pooled their money and paid for my university application, insisting that if I was accepted I would go. Needless to say I was soon packing my backs and head-ing off to Waterloo, Ontario to complete my Engineering Degree. I remember clearly the message from our first lecture, “…you are here to learn one thing and one thing only: how to solve problems!" I have forgotten most of the things I learned in university but I will never lose my problem solving skills.

After graduation, I headed north to the Canadian Arctic where I lived in the remote northern community of Cambridge Bay and managed community development projects in three outlying com-

munities. One day a friend came into my office and announced he had met the man of my dreams, a young fellow from

Vancouver Island. He refused to leave my office until I agreed to meet the fellow. We met at the annual fall celebration and were married six months later. Again I packed my bags, this time heading back to the Island to Nanaimo where we decided we would raise our family.

As the family grew, I opened, operated and sold a U-Brew, managed a heli-maintenance company, ran a small herd of beef cattle and then operated a profes-sional organizing business. I found that many of my

clients suffered not only from the chaos associ-ated with being disorganized but also from the stress of out of control finances and a lack of

financial literacy. Sorting out the organiza-tional chaos was only addressing a portion of their problem. Ever the problem solver, I set out to find financial solutions I could offer my clients and discovered 4 Pillars Debt Consulting.

I realized I had discovered a very knowl-edgeable and reputable organization and decided that instead of referring my cli-ents to 4 Pillars I would change careers and train to be a debt relief specialist. As a debt relief specialist with 4 Pillars I am very fortunate to be in a position to help individuals and families develop cre-ative solutions to their financial prob-lems. The work I do at 4 Pillars is in-credibly rewarding and I am proud to be able to help people relieve their fi-

nancial stress so they can sleep at night and build a better future for themselves

and their families.

Urinary obstruction is another common emer-gency that we see and it is most common in cats. Any animal with a urinary obstruction will present in a similar way, but it is most common in young male, neutered cats.

What you will see Cats will typically lick the genital area. This isn’t the normal washing behavior we see in all cats, but a constant almost frantic licking of the genital region. Cats might stop licking, walk a few steps and sit down again to lick the same area. Many cats will meow in an unusual way, almost a howl. They may look as if they are squatting to urinate, but nothing comes out. They may make constant trips to the litter box, moving a lot of litter around, but not producing any urine.

If they aren’t completely blocked, you may see them pass small amounts of bloody urine in or out of the litter box. They aren’t trying to make you mad, but they can’t urinate. They just don’t care where they are when they pass the urine. If they can get a small amount out, they do.

What do you do? DO NOT WAIT. Blocked cats require immediate care. Kidneys clear the body of toxins and deposit those toxins in the bladder. If an animal can’t uri-nate, the toxins are not removed from the body. They need blood work to find out how severe the toxin build up is, and then they require sedation to pass a urinary catheter and clear the blockage.

This catheter must stay in for a couple of days or the cat will re-block. They also need iv fluids to help push the toxins out of their bodies, and to increase urine volume. More volume, more dilu-tion, less chance they will block again.

This can happen in dogs as well. When it happens in dogs it looks very similar, but happens for slightly different reasons. Dogs can get urinary stones that will move and physically block their urinary tract. They are also uncomfortable, licking their genitals

and they may suddenly turn around and start licking their genitals when doing something else.

If you are suspicious that your cat has a urinary blockage, contact your veterinary clinic and bring your pet in for an immediate assessment. A vet-erinarian can determine a blockage is present by palpation. Obese cats may require an x-ray or ul-trasound to determine what their bladder is do-ing…another good reason to keep your pets trim!

As you walk through the doors of Aspengrove School you will immediately notice our students wearing a uniform. To the cynical it's elitism, an indicator of being a private school, something that separates and gives an air of exclusivity. Nothing could be further from the truth.

One of the things we take pride in at Aspengrove is how welcome and included our students feel. Largely that comes from the people here. The stu-dents care about each other. The teachers focus on social and emotional development. Parents are a

The uniform means students don't have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn't so important.

And this all makes life easier for families as well. There are no worries about what to wear in the morning, no need to have the latest in fashion for the classroom.

We have both a formal and an informal uniform at Aspengrove. On Mondays and special occasions students wear their formal uniform. They learn to take pride in their dress, to prepare for what will be expected of them in the working world and to understand that there is a time to act more formally in recognition of something special.

Most days though we are in a more casual uniform. It's relaxed, a polo shirt and khakis or a skirt. But we're still part of something bigger than ourselves. It's inclusive, not exclusive.

We would love to have you and your children consider becoming part of the Aspengrove com-munity. Call our admissions department for a visit at your convenience: 250-390-2201 or [email protected]

There's no judgment about what you wear Jessica K. Grade 9

Sorry there is only room for the last few lines of this wonderful poem about childbirth. It will be included in an upcoming book on the subject put out by Leaf Press. Keep an eye on their website. Ann Graham Walker, who wrote this sensitive poem, is a writer and journalist who moved to Vancouver Island in the summer of 2002, after living and working in Nova Scotia for twenty-five years. She had many wonderful experiences in Nova Scotia - raising three children, working as a CBC radio producer, getting a front-row seat on the political world as speech writer to former Nova Scotia premier, Dr. John Savage, publishing a book about Halifax, and enjoying many friendships. However being a cold-weather wimp at heart, she was very happy to leave her snow shovels behind and swap them for the West Coast’s blissful gardening and majestic landscapes. She still works as a freelance journalist, hikes and gardens profusely, and lives in Nanoose Bay with her husband and three cats. She very actively supports the Nanaimo poetry community, and is on the organising committee for Cascadia Poetry Festival 3 which comes to Nanaimo April 30 – May 3, 2015.

around bones. This helps to increase tone, improve balance, etc, which may help to prevent you from falling. Examples of muscle strengthening exercises include weight lifting but you do not necessarily have to lift weights in a gym. There are some simple exercises that you can do at home.

If you are new to exercise or have not been properly trained in weight lifting it’s important to hire a personal trainer or weight trainer to make sure that you are executing the exercises properly to ensure safe training without injury. Training incorrectly can create a whole another series of problems in your structural health that can affect other areas of your life.

If you are looking for small group training in a private gym or one-on-one training I would be happy to sit down with you for a FREE consultation to discuss your goals.

This month’s article is for all the mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, and aunties and nieces. Let’s be proactive to prevent osteoporosis.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects bone strength (the word osteoporosis literally means "porous bones"). Bone is made of collagen fibres (tough, elastic fibres) and minerals (gritty, hard material). It is a living tissue and contains cells that make, mold and resorb (take back up) bone. Initially, as you grow, bone formation exceeds bone resorption. But, as you get older, this reverses and, after about the age of 30 for women and 45 for men, you start to lose a certain amount of bone material. Your bones become less dense and less strong. The amount of bone loss can vary.

Osteoporosis alone does not produce any symptoms. Most people with this condition are unaware that their bones are thinning until they experience a fracture.

One of the best ways to prevent this disease is to weight train and to build of your bone density. Women stop building bones by age of 30 and from there begin to lose bone mass. Keep in mind its never too late to start recreating or maintaining bone mass.

One of the best ways to prevent this condition is Exercise. The pulling and tugging on the bones by your muscles during exercise helps to stimulate bone-making weight-bearing exercise throughout life is best, but it is never too late to start. This means exercise where your feet and legs bear your body's weight, such as brisk walking, dancing, weight training, etc. For older people, a regular walk is a good start and the more vigorous the exercise the better. For most benefit you should exercise regularly - aiming for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise or physical activity at least five times per week. Excessive exercise such as marathon running may not be so good. (Note: because swimming is not weight-bearing exercise, this is not so helpful in preventing osteoporosis.)

Muscle strengthening exercises are also important. They help to give strength to the supporting muscles
