Oceanside Family Health & Wellness Fair18th Annual Wellness Fair Aims to Keep Residents Healthy
by Brenda Gough
There is something for everyone at the 18th annual Oceanside Family Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, April 6. An extra day of speakers has been
added to the event this year, which takes place at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre.
Parksville Pharmasave Natural Health Consultant Lisa Leger, who is coordinating the fair, says they decided to add a bonus day on Sunday, April 7 to provide people with even more opportunities to hear from the experts.
“Every year a lot of interesting guests offer to do a presentation but we never have room for them all. This year we will have one room of seminars on the Saturday and then have a whole bunch of smaller mini seminars on the Sunday” Lisa said.
She advised that people should give themselves a few hours to spend at the event because there is so much to take in.
Every year the fair is stocked with exhibitors who are passionate about health and wellness and more than 80 of them will be on hand April 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ››

The public is invited to browse through a wide variety of booths, taste and sample products, and speak to health professionals from the community all free of charge.
Leger pointed out that there are always new health products to check out and they try to offer interactive displays so people can try things.
Leger said their exhibitors have a wealth of information to share and the annual fair is a great way to expose the public to the many services and products offered right here in the community.
“What is unique about our fair is the exhibitor
tables are affordable. It is important to us that the non-profi t groups can afford to get a table. All the money goes back into the community to support educational events,” Leger explained.
She added that for many of the groups it is probably one of their biggest events of the year and gives them great exposure to the community.
On Saturday April 6 at 2:30 p.m. keynote speaker Doctor John Cline will talk about cancer and how to prevent it.
Cancer accounts for more deaths than heart disease in persons under age 85 and 85% to 90% of all cancers are directly caused by our interaction with the environment and of environmental causes. Over 50% are related to poor diet, poor exercise and smoking.
Dr. Cline is a licensed medical doctor in BC and certifi ed by the International Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology. He is also medical director of the Oceanside Functional Medicine Research Institute and author of the book Detoxify For Life, a comprehensive analysis of the many toxic substances that permeate our lives.
Oceanside Division of Family Practice will have morning and afternoon sessions with opportunities for people to get answers from a doctor.
Clinical counsellor Diane Hancox will conduct a workshop called Living Well Before You Die. Leger said
her seminar is sure to be of interest to everyone because it is about making the best of every age.
“The seminar is about hospice but she brings in more general concepts about aging. The theme in our community these days is about healthy aging and embracing aging.”
The 18th Annual Oceanside Family Health & Wellness Fair goes from 10:00am to 3:30pm on Saturday April 6 and from 10:00am until 4:00pm on Sunday April 7.
Visit www.oceansidehealthfair.ca for more information.

The gold rush that took place in the first half of the 19th century and propelled feverish migration into areas that had gold deposits is the inspiration behind the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Golden Shoe Hunt.
The current gold rush about to get underway in District 69 isn’t for extracting precious metals… rather it is aimed at getting people outside and enjoying the RDN’s parks and trails.
The seventh annual Golden Shoe Hunt is a self-directed program to encourage people to head outdoors and enjoy the spring season.
In past events people of all ages have flocked to area parks not to seek their fortunes in gold but to find the hidden golden shoe.
Clues to the location of the golden shoe are provided each Friday at www.rdn.bc.ca, as well as on the RDN’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
RDN recreation programmer Chrissie Finnie said people who enjoy a good treasure hunt or geo caching get a kick out of searching for the shoe which is really a sneaker painted yellow.
She pointed out that with 12 regional parks and seven regional trails with diverse natural environments, the RDN feels it is important to encourage people to spend time in them and appreciate the outdoors.
“The idea is to get people into the parks.
The program is free to participants and it is a lot of fun,” Chrissie said.
She explained that in each shoe there is a small box with a logbook and little prizes.
“We hide six of them each year. We have people who search for it every Friday.”
Finnie added that they have fun coming up with the clues and locations for the golden shoe but make sure they don’t send people on a wild goose chase.
“They are all placed in safe areas, near or right on trails in parks where people will not step on sensitive or natural habitat. We don’t want to make it too difficult to find the shoe … in fact we have a daycare that does it every year.”
The cache box inside the shoe holds things like swim passes and stickers and the log book keeps a record of who has successfully found it.
Finnie said that occasionally some of the shoes have gone missing but most of the time people are respectful and follow the spirit of geo caching.
She related an incident a few years back when a dog got his jaws on one of the shoes and brought it home. She said the owner found the RDN’s information inside of it and promptly returned it to them.
The Golden Shoe Hunt starts April 12 and runs six weeks, wrapping up on May 17.

If you loved the 50’s and feel like re-living the good old days, then make sure you mark Aril 27 on your calendar for a fun 1950’s party at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre.
The Buddy Holly 1950’s Rock n’ Roll Dance Party is an exciting fundraising event presented by the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association (QBDBA) and tickets are selling fast.
Girls are encouraged to wear their poodle skirts and bobby socks while guys defi nitely need to fi nd their inner James Dean and rock their leather jackets and ducktails for the retro affair.
The party will feature well-known tribute artist Zachary Stevenson as Buddy Holly. Zach and his band will rock the house with two 45-minute sets of live 50’s and 60’s music and DJ Patrick Nicholson will be spinning the oldies in between.
There will be a 50’s costume contest so guests are encouraged to dress in the styles that defi ned the decade including blue suede shoes, crinoline skirts and the fl at top.
Organizer Sherri Verdec says she will be wearing a vintage outfi t for the dance, which she said, is all about fun.
Verdec is the one who came up with the idea of a 1950’s dance party as a fundraiser for the QBDBA, which continues to promote a healthy and vibrant downtown business core.
“The downtown business association is run by great people who put so much heart and soul into the community,” she stated.
Gary’s Bistro will be setting up a full restaurant at the venue so guests can buy
hot dogs and hamburgers and Verdec said it will be a bitter sweet night for her because it was Gary Hopkins whom she fi rst pitched the idea of a 50’s dance to.
“One day I was sitting with Gary and I said to him it would be really neat to have a 50’s party here and he said ok we’ll talk … but a week later he passed away.”
Verdec said in memory of Gary a portion of the funds from the dance will go towards a donation on his behalf to a Kwalikum Secondary School (KSS) scholarship fund.
“The Seaside Cruisers already contribute to a KSS scholarship for the technology program. Because Gary was interested in cars we are going to add to it in his honour,” she announced.
She pointed out that Gary was very involved in the community as a member of both the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association and the Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce. He was also one of the founder of the Father’s Day Show n’ Shine.
“If Gary was here he would have loved this so much … this is so him.”
The adults-only dance will include a cash bar, 50/50 draws and even a jive contest.
Verdec said it is an opportunity to dance the night away with Parksville’s very own version of Buddy Holly as performed by Zachary Stevenson.
“Zach grew up here. He is an amazing entertainer and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet” said Verdec.
Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased at Fresh N Fabulous Flowers & Gifts at #210 2nd Avenue West in downtown Qualicum Beach.
For more information, contact Sherri Verdec at 250-757-8270 or by email to [email protected]
