Car collectors will be beaming and their cars will be gleaming on Father’s Day weekend as the Seaside Cruizers Car Club hosts three days of events that will turn the Oceanside area into a car lovers dream.
From June 14 to June 16, hundreds of vehicles from a by-gone era will be cruising the streets of Parksville and Qualicum Beach for the annual Father’s Day Show & Shine.
This year, the event (which got mentioned on the Oprah Winfrey Show as one of the 10 best things to do on Father's Day) will even be more spectacular as the Seaside Cruizers are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their famous car show.
Up to 600 car enthusiasts will bring their bling for the big boy show & tell, and this colourful display on wheels will feature custom, classic, hotrods and everything in between.
Seaside Cruizers spokesperson Dave Sampson said the event has become so popular with car enthusiasts that they have had to turn cars away from past events because there is just not enough room for them.
And while dads have an opportunity to stroll through row after row of perfectly painted classic
cars, the weekend is not just for gear heads.
Sampson said they have activities for the entire family including a shop and walk event for ladies who may not be interested in checking out the custom paint jobs and mag wheels.
In fact, the entire community can get involved in the event starting at 5:00pm Friday evening with a Cruise Night at Harris Oceanside GMC in Parksville.
At 7:00 p.m. car collectors will depart from the dealership and parade around the streets of town and return at 9:00 p.m. to watch the 1973 movie classic American Graffi ti.
The public is invited to go back in time for a drive-in movie experience and to make a donation to Jeneece Place, the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.
General Manager Andy Lankester said they will have a large four-story infl atable screen, popcorn and root beer fl oats.
He added that since they don’t have room for everyone to park their vehicle on the lot, it is probably better if people park on the street and bring lawn chairs to watch the show.
On Saturday, there is a Poker Run at Arrowsmith

Downtown Qualicum Beach will be wired for sound Saturday night as the Maloomba Boogie Band performs from 6 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for one of the biggest street dance the town has ever seen.
Last year at the downtown street dance, the high-energy band had folks of all ages dancing to good old rock n’ roll at the corner of Second Avenue West and Primrose Street.
This street dance is for everyone in the family and there will be food available.
On Father’s Day, some 600 car collectors will show off their timeless treasures along the streets of Qualicum Beach.
Bring dad out early as the Shriner's pancake breakfast is in full swing from 7:30 until 11:00 a.m.
At noon, the Arrowsmith Pipe Band will perform and at 2:30 p.m. Show & Shine trophies will be presented.

Street markets are a summer tradition here in Oceanside and this year, there are three summer night markets to explore: Parksville’s Summer by the Sea Street Market, the Uptown Summer Market in Qualicum Beach and the all-new Magnolia Court Summer Market in Bowser.
First to open is Parksville’s highly anticipated Summer by the Sea Street Market on June 11. This market – organized by the Parksville Chamber of Commerce - is in its tenth year and has grown so big that it now extends up Craig Street beyond Hirst Avenue towards Jensen Avenue.
Each Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., over 140 exceptional artisans from across Vancouver Island gather along Craig Street in the heart of downtown Parksville to offer a wide variety of handmade products such as wrought iron work, rock candles, one-of-a-kind jewellery wooden toys and more.
Shoppers can find everything from wrought iron work and rock candles to one-of-a-kind jewellery, wooden toys and even custom made fishing lures created by Mark Falvai, the winner of HGTV’s Canada’s Best Handyman 2012.
In addition to great shopping, this market also includes tasty food and a fabulous line-up of live
music and entertainment. Located within walking distance from Parksville’s fabulous beach, the Summer by the Sea street market is the place to be on a Tuesday summer night.
Not to be outdone, Qualicum Beach also has a fantastic summer street market that runs every Thursday night from July 5 to August 30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Uptown Summer Market takes place on Second Avenue West, between Memorial Avenue and Primrose Street.
This is the second year that the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association (QBDBA) has organized the street market in its effort to make the downtown core of Qualicum Beach more vibrant in the evening.
Spokesperson Katherine Wilks said Second Avenue, where the majority of downtown businesses are located, is closed off to traffic during the market, providing plenty of room for entertainment and for merchants to put up tents and tables.
She said last year’s street market was a huge success and that many of the vendors who are at the Qualicum Beach Farmers Market have asked to be included in this year’s Thursday night event.
Local summer street markets pull in the crowds.
Shop. Eat. Mingle.
16 fb.com/whatsonpqb
“We really want to expand the market. In the future we hope to see it move even further up Second Avenue,” she stated.
Wilks said there is a jury process for all of market participants and they have to fit into their motto of “make it, bake it, grow it or sew it”. This summer, they definitely have some high quality vendors who will be participating.
There will also be food vendors, including the Qualicum Beach Bakery, which will stay open late for this Thursday night market in order to sell their famous bratwursts on a bun.
Further north along the Island Highway, there’s a new evening market starting up in Bowser on June 12. The Magnolia Court Summer Market will take place every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. until August 28.
Corinne Roby who runs The Messenger’s Emporium said the merchants in Magnolia Court hope it will generate more interest in their region of the Island. She said it will also be a juried market and that they hope to have about 30 tables as well as musical entertainment.

It is one of the biggest celebrations on Vancouver Island and Canada Day festivities in Parksville will start early with a pancake breakfast and end late with the Thrifty Foods fireworks spectacular at dusk.
It’s estimated 20,000 people will take part in the activities that include a parade and a day full of fun at the Community Park, along with children’s games and activities and an entertainment line-up sure to please every musical taste.
The day starts early at 7:30 a.m. with a Shriners pancake breakfast, which has been re-located to the parking lot of the Coastal Community Credit Union in downtown Parksville. There will be entertainment and the flap jacks will be flipping until 11:30 a.m. But if you love a good parade, you’ll want to make sure you get every last drop of syrup off your plate before 10:00 a.m. when the procession gets underway.
Parksville’s colourful Canada Day parade has undergone many changes over the years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the community spirit that fills the streets of Parksville when the
parade comes to town.
Crowds of people line the streets as beautifully decorated floats, equestrian units, fire trucks, marching bands and clowns riding ‘way too small’ bicycles head north along the Island Highway from Shelley Road to Craig Street.
Kids can expect a treat or two as candy is always tossed out to the thousands of patriotic Canadians wearing red and white waving their flags.
Long time Parksville resident Bill Lesage, who has been one of the parade organizers since way back, said that even though the procession gets bigger every year, it always runs smoothly and this year things are coming together nicely.
“I am impressed with the way it is going. We have a lot of volunteers that stay involved every year and they know what they are doing,” he assured.
The parade is considered one of the best on the Island and the 20,000 or more people who attend it each year can’t be wrong.
Around noon the parade wraps up and thousands of people head down to the Community Park to

hang around for a full day of fabulous live music, games, rides, demos, crafts, food, activities and so much more. Most of the events are free and all of it is geared towards family fun.
The main stage events begin at 12:00 p.m. with the singing of “O Canada” and the cutting of the giant birthday cake.
All afternoon the main stage will feature up and coming original bands as well as popular cover bands.
The evening’s headliner U4 is sure to please everyone. With incredible vocals and musicianship, the U2 tribute band is a must see show for fans of Ireland’s beloved band.
From the legendary Joshua Tree period to How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, all eras are covered with equal attention to detail.
After U4 sets the mood, the night will be capped off with some stunning fi reworks sponsored by Thrifty Foods at 10:00 p.m.
