e break in the long, hot dry spell on Vancouver Island has meant some areas have had total re bans rescinded, but that’s not the case around Parksville-Qualicum.
Coastal Fire Centre spokesperson Donna MacPherson said Monday bans have been lifted on the northern tip of the Island and in what she called the fog zone, an area around Port Renfrew prone to heavy mist. However, the bans remain in place in the Central Island.
“We haven’t lifted any of our prohibitions in that area yet,” she said. However, the Town of Qualicum Beach has backed o on its re
ban, thanks to the spell of wet, rainy weather.“Based on the rainfall we received and what the current re pa-
trols we have in place, we have lifted our camp re ban,” said Quali-cum Beach re chief Darryl Kohse.

Welcoming a record 93,500 visitors through the gates, the 31st an-nual Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition has wrapped up for another year.
e sculptures, created over the July 14-15 contest weekend, were demolished Monday after the successful ve-week exhibition that saw the event’s attendance increase by more than 3,000 people over 2012.
ough they didn’t hit the tidy 100,000 mark they hoped for, orga-nizers are “extremely pleased with the results,” said Beachfest Society president Cheryl Dill.
“With the weather on our side and the generosity of our sponsors, we were so fortunate to host such talented sculptors in our commu-nity,” she said.

Oceanside Generals to donate proceeds from exhibition gameAug. 31; silent auction there too
NEIL [email protected]
Following an emotional and well-attended service Saturday for Lukas Whibley, who per-ished in a tragic swimming accident at Little Qualicum Falls, the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals will host a silent auction at their exhi-bition game next week to help the family.
The Facebook link is called Silent Auction for the Whibley family.
The silent auction will be held at the Gener-als’ final exhibition game before the start of the new Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season. The exhibition game is against the Na-naimo Buccaneers, and starts at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Oceanside Place.
Anyone who would like to contribute items for the auction or would like to volun-teer e-mail Megan Olsen at [email protected] or call 250-937-0999 Silent auction donations can be dropped off at PostNet in Parksville.
Admission to the exhibition game is $5. The Generals say proceeds from the admission money collected will go to a scholarship fund in Whibley’s name.

Events geared for support

Many somber youth in sports uniforms could be seen out front of the Parksville Community Centre Saturday, honouring their friend and teammate Lukas Whibley during a memorial for the teen who died Aug. 9 at Little Qualicum Falls. The community centre was packed with hundreds of people for the ceremonies.
The recent paint work on the 100 year old MAC (McMillian Arts Centre) building in Parksville was done by people in the Work Ex-perience Skills Enhancement Program, sponsored by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Labour Skills and managed by the locally-based Community Fisheries Development Centre.

Reported crime is up in many categories in Parksville, according to the latest year-to-date report.
Oceanside RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Hunter was scheduled to pre-sented his semi-annual report to Parksville council Monday night after press deadline.
The agenda item shows that some categories have jumped con-siderably over the first half of 2013 over the same period last year, with assaults rising from 30 to 43, theft from motor vehicle up from 42 to 74 and immediate roadside prohibition failures up from two to 20.
Some categories are continuing their general downward trend of the past several years, including theft of motor vehicle from eight to five, drug infractions from 35 to 27 and impaired driving from 11 to three.
Hunter will present more detail and context to council Monday night.

“Our staff and volunteers were prepared to provide visitors and residents with five weeks of entertainment alongside beautiful Parksville Beach and our guest books recorded thousands of positive comments.”
Dropping a poker chip to vote for their fa-vourite sculpture, visitors throughout the five week event chose Brett Stocker’s “Cinderella’s Castle” as the solo People’s Choice and Guy and Melineige Beauregard’s “Cute Power” as the winning duo.
Highlighting Beachfest’s international ap-peal Stocker is from Los Cabos, Mexico, and the father-daughter Beauregard team is from St. Hippolyte, Quebec.
As the official Canadian qualifying event, last year’s winner David Ducharme from Win-law, B.C. will attend this year’s World Cham-pionships of Sand Sculpting in Atlantic City in November. This year’s winners of the officially judged competition — Peter Vogelar and the Beauregards — will represent Parksville next year.
On top of the Beachfest Society’s mandate to create fun, family-friendly events in the park,
they give 25 per cent of the by-donation gate proceeds back to the community groups that help.
They have donated almost $293,000 to non-profit groups and projects since 1999 in-cluding construction of the park gazebo and community signs.
This year, they hope to donate another $40,000 to the 16 not-for-profit organizations who acted as “community ambassadors,” greeting visitors at the gate. The Volunteer Community Ambassadors this year were: Err-ington Therapeutic Riding Association, Frater-nal Order of Eagles, Knights of Columbus – As-cension Council 7991, Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion #211 Bowser, Lions Club of Parksville, Oceanside Hospice Society, Parks-ville Curling Club, Parksville Lioness Club, Parksville Qualicum Elks #589, Parksville Qualicum Shrine Club #34, Preceptor Delta Zeta, Rotary Club of Parksville (Noon hour), Rotary Club of Parksville AM, Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise, Royal Canadian Le-gion Branch 49 Ladies Auxiliary, Xi Delta Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

the beach in Parksville was packed with kids on sunday during the annual Quality Foods children’s sandcastle competition during Kids Fest celebrations.
It’s allthe kids
about
The summer holiday season may be winding down, but it went out with a big bang at Parksville beach on Sunday as the waterfront came alive with children and their parents who flocked to the area to take part in the annual Kids Fest event.
Of particular interest to the younger set was the Quality Foods Children’s Sandcastle Competition, which saw literally hundreds of children from toddlers to pre-teens work at a frantic pace to build their dream castles before the allotted time ran out. However, there was more — much more — fun and entertainment available, including music, food, clowns, games and activities, put on by a small army of volunteers.
Despite the looming clouds on the horizon, the weather co-operated resulting in one of the most well-attended and — judging by the smiles on their faces — fun festivals since the event began.
Congratulations go out to all the organizers, sponsors and volunteers who helped make it happen. See more photos on our Facebook page: facebook.com/PQBNEWS

ERRATIC: When police received a call about an erratic driver on Highway 19A early Thursday afternoon, they didn’t have far to look. That’s because the driver turned onto Lee Road, but missed the turn and slammed into a hydro pole. The single male occupant was rushed to hospital with undetermined injuries. A police investigation into the incident is continuing.

Lookingfor clarityLISSA [email protected]
Councillor Dave Willie says he has grave concerns about the town’s policy regarding the correction of information.
At an Aug. 12 council meeting during dis-cussions on communications planning, he re-ferred to a letter that was produced by the town under the mayor’s direction, a letter aimed at clearing up misinformation about the town’s business dealings with the Beach Hut.
“That was good, but what I was looking for clarity on is where that direction comes from and how that direction is made. Because quite often there are comments and letters to the edi-tor that are totally inaccurate and on what basis will the Town be correcting those?” he asked.
Willie said he has a problem specifically with certain groups who write information he be-lieves is libelous. He brought up the Qualicum Beach Residents Association and a newsletter they published about the Clarion Project.
Willie said it’s important that the general public know where they can get the right infor-mation. He asked if staff can give some direc-tion that can ensure that pieces like the QBRA newsletter “that are total hogwash” can be set straight as soon as possible.
“It’s speaking about town information. It’s speaking about staff. That type of what’s being said there is speaking badly of everyone sitting in this room.”

All fire bans in the City of Parksville remain in effect.
Fire information officer Marg Drysdale said there have been 27 wildfires in the Central Is-land area so far this year, of which 21 were caused by human activity and five by lightning.
She noted that while this is slightly below the 10-year average of 33 fires, the last two years have been fairly quiet, making this season rel-atively busy.
She noted that Environment Canada has pre-dicted above average temperatures for the rest
of the summer, with an average amount of pre-cipitation. Because of this she urged residents to remain vigilant when they are out in the bush.
Although fire season generally ends in Sep-tember, Drysdale said the season does not end on any particular date, but rather when the weather dictates.
“Fire season ends when we have a weather system that dictates that fire season is over,” she said. “Last year it went right into the middle of October. We don’t know what this year will bring.”

My doctor is a gem. A magnificent di-amond. One of the crown jewels of the Canadian
medical establishment. He is an insightful practitioner, a brilliant diagnostician, an inspired clini-cian and a tireless champion for anyone fortunate enough to count themselves among his patients.
My doctor is smart, down to earth, empathetic and charismat-ic. In case you haven’t guessed, I love the guy, but...
He writes like a three-year old.I’m not talking scrawly or crabbed or mere-
ly sloppy writing. I’m talking about penman-ship so spectacularly horrendous it looks like it might be written in Aramaic. By an orang-utan holding a ballpoint in his teeth.
This is writing that ruptures the outer bound-aries of cursive communication. A prescrip-tion from my doctor looks like a piece of paper that’s been dive-bombed by a squadron of ink-soaked, methamphetamine-addled kamikaze fruit flies.
I know doctors should be forgiven their scrawls because they have to write a lot of things — and fast. Well, here’s a flash: so do news re-porters. The difference is reporters have to be able to read their own writing when it comes time to type it out.
Doctors have no such problem. That thank-less chore falls to their receptionist or to some poor chump down in the pharmacy.
Of course it doesn’t help that a lot of pre-scriptions employ a language that’s been ex-tinct for two thousand years. Do doctors and pharmacists speak Latin? No, but they write and read it every day.
Even the word for prescription — Rx — is a medieval English translation of the Latin origi-
nal. It means ‘Receive thou’. Or in plain English — ‘take’.The language of prescriptions
written by English-speaking physi-cians borders on the Kafkaesque.
In a sane universe the medical short form for ‘after meals’ might be A.M..’, right? Wrong. It’s ‘PC’. For ‘twice daily’ the secret code is ‘BID’ whereas ‘QOD’ is ‘every other day’.
For some reason we’ve decided to cut doctors some slack about this. We treat their sloppy hand-
writing as a kind of amusing cultural cliché like thrifty Scotsmen, gesticulating Italians and snobby Brits.
Except it’s not funny. According to a report in Time magazine preventable medication mis-takes injure one and a half million American patients every year. It also claims that sloppy handwriting and/or improper deciphering of prescriptions kills 7,000 patients annually worldwide.
I’m not the only one that thinks this is luna-cy. So does Louis Francescutti — Doctor Fran-cescutti to the rest of us. He is president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and he’s fed up with the prescriptive status quo.
Two years ago Doctor Francescutti reviewed the case of Nova Scotia nurse Wilfred Douglas Gordon, one of the few medical practitioners to be officially reprimanded for his incomprehen-sible notations on nurses’ notes and patient’s charts.
Doctor Francescutti told reporters “It’s total-ly unacceptable that we’re still handwriting – that’s how the monks did it. Everything should be dictated or typed.”
I say Amen to that. I’d say a lot more but I’ve got a doctor’s appointment this afternoon. Sure hope I see him before he sees today’s paper.

island beaches ‘being plundered’LISSA [email protected]
Our local beaches are being plundered with shellfish harvesting, most of it illegally, accord-ing to a delegation at Qualicum Beach council Monday night.
“Immediate action and patrolling is required to ensure that life is left on our beaches,” said Eileen Becker. “We also need larger defined visible signage educating the public of exist-ing limits for harvesting shellfish and red tide warnings.”
Becker and Monica Stuart spoke about peo-ple harvesting from the beaches without li-cences, at all hours of the day. Becker said they have contacted the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as well as the regional B.C. Envi-ronment Office but both are dealing with se-vere staff cutbacks, she reported.
Becker said little is being done to protect the maine life on the beaches and she and Stuart are pushing for the beaches to get “Protected Park” designation, under the Provincial Park Act.
Councillor Bill Luchtmeijer asked the town administrator, Mark Brown, if commercial ac-tivity could be prohibited on the beach by way of zoning, since the town boundaries go well into the ocean, he said.
Brown said it has been looked into before, but the town would have to look into whether its current legislation would supersede any li-censes issued with federal and provincial au-thorities. He said there is an overlap of jurisdic-tions in that area.
The subject will come to back to council for discussion at the next council meeting on Sep-tember 9.
A10 www.pqbnews.com Tuesday, August 20, 2013 The Parksville Qualicum Beach News
Being a tourist in your own town is more en-joyable when one lives in a paradise like Parksville Qualicum Beach.
It’s even better when one gets to play tour guide for visitors.
Times are tough out there for business operators, and they deserve the support of residents.
ey are your neighbours and they employ hundreds of your friends and relatives. is is their make-hay time, and they are getting little or no support from municipali-ties that are looking — often in the wrong places — to save a buck here, pay for infrastructure there.
Whether it’s a large operation or a small ice cream stand (watermelon- avoured ice cream? who knew?), healthy businesses here are vital to the future of the region.
We presented a story recently about a small-busi-ness-owning couple who decided to sell their Parksville shop and move to Washington state.
It’s their money-making years, and despite a real love for the area and its people, they couldn’t see how they were going to make the money they needed to give their children the future they envision.
ere were other reasons for the move, but there was an underlying theme to the comments of the owner who has returned to the fast-lane of the dot.com world outside of Seattle.
Gary Child is a former chamber of commerce presi-dent and was well-versed in all things business, especially its relationship to municipalities and their laws, policies and leadership.
He sees real economic recovery and optimism in Washington, something that many say is lacking here.
Real leadership requires balance. When times are tough for local businesses, good mu-
nicipal leadership demands some action. It seems even when a council does something to spur business (see Qualicum Beach’s village neighbourhood development cost charge reductions), entrepreneurs who take the bait get hammered by the public.
It makes no sense to radically change or react wildly to the ups and downs of the economy.
At the same time, it makes no sense for municipal lead-ers and residents to sit idly by and let the lifeblood of our communities twist in the wind when they need only a hand up, not a hand out.

editorial spot-onAs they say, “ya goddit right, man.” (Re:
John Harding’s editorial in the August 6 edi-tion of The NEWS, ‘MLA by e-mail?’)
Your commentary Aug. 6 pretty well cov-ers the situation.
We have a new (part-time) MLA who obviously has many admirable attributes which, in time, could be harnessed to a pro-ductive political career. But she will not suc-ceed if her priorities continue to be outside the legislative chamber and constituency responsibilities. We need to see and hear her doing more than the athletes’ mouth-wide-open victory yell on the race track.
There is work to be done (E & N problems to be solved, a medical facility fully-suited to our local needs, the threat of local coal mining (and the broader subject of resourc-es versus environment) , and on and on) which will not be advanced by the accumu-lation of more pretty “danglers” to hang on the wall at home.

answers neededAnyone who thinks the level of time, en-
ergy, dedication and focus required to train and win at the Paralymic or world level is equitable to reading a book, having a relax-ing day or two or going on vacation is doing Michelle Stilwell a great disservice.
Also, all of our elected representatives “sacrifice” family time to do public service . . . so please stop with the violins in that area.
As a taxpayer and a constituent, what I want to know is: who is minding the office while she is away and focused on training or competing? Technology can compensate
for distance but not the focus and energy. Is this costing us more than an MLA who
is not taking weeks or months at a time to train and compete?
How does the amount of time she is away from the legislature and the constituency compare to other MLAs?
How many other MLAs basically hold full or part time jobs while being paid as a full time MLA?
I am as proud as any of Michelle’s achievements and representing our area to the world. She was doing both before she became our MLA.
Given the unfolding expense scandals of some of our senators, to me these are im-portant and legitimate questions to which we need honest answers.
Yvonne ZarownYQualicum Beach
a little paddingLet’s get one fact clear from the outset:
Senator Pamela Wallin is not the only per-son to pad an expense account.
Since time immemorial, a great many people have surreptitiously added a few dollars here and there to such accounts.
What has been exposed by the Deloitte independent audit of Senator Wallin is not a few dollars here and there, but looks more like a quite accomplished serial fraudster at work.
Literally scores upon scores of inadmissi-ble travel expenses uncovered; beginning in 2009 when, at age 56, she was first appoint-ed to be a Conservative senator by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The Senator called the audit “funda-mentally flawed and unfair,” in arriving at
the total of ineligible expenses in excess of $120,000, and counting.
Surely, with the RCMP now on the case, the logical question is: does someone who has been using expense accounts honest-ly for many years, suddenly decide to use them fraudulently at age 56?
It may be prudent for the relevant ac-countants to check Senator Wallin’s ex-pense claims when she worked as Canadian Consul in New York, and even before that when in the employ of CBC and CTV.
When all those avenues are checked out, your readers may have the answer to this question: who is fundamentally flawed and unfair?

time to move overRe: The Good Old Days, a letter to the ed-
itor in the Aug. 15 edition of The NEWS.While I recognize and respect letter writ-
er Pat Doughty’s memories, she and oth-ers have to realize that there is a generation of Canadians (baby boomers) who are retir-ing and want somewhere nice to retire.
Parksville Qualicum Beach is the most ideal retirement environment in Canada, so don’t be surprised to see a large influx of retirees and lots more growth in all commu-nities.
So to all you whiners who continuous-ly object to change, move over and make room for other Canadians who wish to set-tle (just as you all did once) and enjoy their retirement years.

Jazz and food with a viewPhil Dwyer to perform with with six seasoned musicians in Deep BayBRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor
An evening of great jazz music is taking place at VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station Thursday, August 22.
Juno award winning, multi-instrumentalist and com-poser/arranger Phil Dwyer will be performing with six other talented musicians for the second concert of the Music by the Bay series.
With floor to ceiling windows and a stunning view of Baynes Sound the centre is the perfect venue to enjoy great music and food.
Last month Todd Butler performed at the first con-cert. Guests enjoyed a great evening of music and com-edy while noshing on some of the treats prepared by VIU culinary students.
The gates open at 5 p.m. with music running from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. leaving plenty of time to take in the view while enjoying food and drinks from the wine and food bar.
It’s expected Phil Dwyer's Adult Jazz Intensive En-semble will sell out and for good reason. To hear Dwyer play his saxophone is worth the drive out to Deep Bay … add six other seasoned musicians to the mix and you have a recipe for a great concert.
Dwyer says he has invited some stellar musicians to perform with him.
“I am playing with crazy good people. They are some of the best musicians around,” he said.
The group has been at Dwyer’s home in Qualicum Beach this week taking part in a summer music camp that Dwyer hosts every year. He said the participants are seasoned musicians and have a variety of backgrounds.
“The level of musicianship is very high,” he pointed out.
Dwyer’s 20 year old son Ben who plays stand up bass is part of the ensemble. Dwyer said another young per-former joining them is a piano player who he mentored eight years ago.
“He was one of the first students to sign up for my first very music camp,” said Dwyer.
Tickets are $20 per concert, $15 for Milner members and students.
The fundraising concerts support the ongoing proj-ects at Milner Gardens and Woodland.
Tickets can be purchased at Milner Gardens & Woodland Welcome Centre, Coastal Community Credit Unions in Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Nanoose Bay, the Deep Bay Marine Field Station, Deep Bay, the Salish Sea Market in Bowser and Turley’s Florist in Nanaimo.
On August 30 The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra will perform at the station. For more information visit www.viu.ca/milnergardens.

Street Dance meant to shed light on youth sceneA free event in Parksville this Saturday organized for local youth will get people of all ages dancing in the streetLISSA [email protected]
There is a lack of things to do for youth in this area and a local marimba band wants to change that.
“There’s lots of activities for children, there’s lot of activities for families and seniors and things but, for youth, I know myself and a lot of my friends have had a hard time finding things all year, but especially in the summer, to do,” said Fahlon Smith of Kumbana Ma-rimba.
That’s why the group is holding a free Street Dance at the Coastal Community Credit Union parking lot Satur-day, Aug 24. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and will feature Kumbana Marimba as well as two other youth-friendly groups that pump out the dance beats: the Des Larson Trio and The Fresh Pots.
Smith said she hopes the event will stir up some awareness of the local youth scene in the communi-ty and perhaps be a catalyst for more youth-centered
events.Smith said when the idea to hold a free street dance
aimed at youth was suggested by a group member she didn’t think it would fly in the community, as far as get-ting enough support and sponsors to hold the show.
“I did not think it would be possible at all,” she said. “But it was such a pleasant surprise at how much sup-port and encouragement the community showed, ev-eryone has been jumping in wherever possible with sponsors and equipment we need.”
Smith said she expects there will be food vendors on-site and alcohol would not be permitted at the event. Although the dance is aimed at youth, she hopes to see people of all ages enjoying the music, she said. The Coastal Community Credit Union is located in down-town Parksville between the Alberni Highway and Craig Street. For more visit Kumbana Marimba’s Face-book page.

Shoreline finds spruce up the garden
I owe this column to the memories invoked by last week’s break-fast reading in the July sunshine of the sun-
room. A beautiful and poignant
book of photos and com-ments – John’s Garden by John Norris and Patrizia Menton was my mentor.
The photo — a chunk of granite he calls a menhir or ‘long stone’ backs a roughly textured iron ball, both com-forted by a creeping scarf of moss and penny royal.
John’s Mars-hued iron ball he supposes came from a ball mill in the Slocan Valley where he made his home and nourished his ev-er-changing garden.
The inspiration of his find brought to mind the endless found treasures — more of-ten than not from the sea —that have and still do, call my garden home.
Not a few of them led to grunts and grumbles from the male detailed to bring them home.
The find producing the most grumbles was in the garden of another life, and I didn’t risk asking for it to be moved to a garden several moves since.
Found on the beach of an offshore island, it was a
solid, three-f o o t - r o u n d gnarl that most resembled a huge pumpkin.
So, roll it to water’s edge, fashion a rope sling, tow home behind boat, wrestle ashore and into truck, dump, roll and set to best advan-tage in its new home. New owners seem not to have ap-preciated its glory … it’s long gone.
Other shoreline finds in-cluded flat stepping stones of PEI-red, luggage-lugged home from the Maritimes and since disintegrated by weighty walkers.
There’s a shark-fin shaped rock that warns of “Jaws” hanging out behind the irises, and the black buoy marking the shoal by our Lake Temagami island, now hidden under the foli-age of the euonymus shrub.
Evidence of mishaps show up here and there as well.
A son’s gift of a an elegant pottery frog, left outside un-der the hosta leaves, lost his shiny green skin to winter’s rain and frost and is now an unglazed ghost of his former
self. A special
crockery bowl sporting a chick-en design at the bottom, fell vic-tim to a brick patio – the half displaying a body-less fowl moves about the flower bed at the gardener’s
whim.A friend who spent years
near Waterton presented me with several of her finds when she moved … anoth-er solid and heavy piece of dried interior wood some-what resembling a long-necked bird who sports a big red bow at Christmas, and another piece of the same wood long used as a screen door stop.
And there’s a circular piece of sheet iron with evenly spaced cutouts of various repeated shapes – neither of us could ever de-termine its original use, if any.
Sitting atop some cast iron legs it has often served as a funky table on the patio.
A relic from Deep Bay days was found on the beach at low tide … and required two strong men to rescue it for garden purposes.
A huge cast iron “pot” with what looked like a bite out of the rim, Jack and I originally thought to use it as a fire pit of sorts – never did.
It now resides in a shady fence corner, on its side, with impatiens flowing out of the potting soil. For the record, Jack had assumed its original purpose was as a “pig-scalding pot”!
In our days of boating and gunkholing we explored many a bygone settlement, farm, cannery, or extinct logging show along our in-ner coast.
Not far from a rusting donkey engine, a crumbling dock, or the moss-covered foundations of a house, we usually found the remnants of some housewife’s dream of a civilized home. Always there was a still living, even thriving, remains of a gar-den.
The bulbs of lilies and snowdrops and their clumps of dirt often found a place aboard, and eventually, a more pampered site to show off their blooms.
But I’m still looking in vain for one of those net en-wrapped fishing floats!

Time to think about holiday wineIt’s not too early to consider Christmas wine production — if you want the good stuffNEIL [email protected]
If you want to make some really high-end, red wine for Christmas, Adam MacKinnon has you over a barrel.
Or at least, the owner of the Qualicum Village Winery (250-752-0058) recom-mends using an oak barrel if you want to get the best possible result within the time-frame remaining before family and friends gather for Christmas.
After all, to make fine wine it takes time.“To prepare the wine and give it time to
mature, you need to start getting it ready now,” he said. “For Christmas I would recommend a Merlot or a Valipolicella, something medium-bodied that would be really nice. However, if you want a heavy, full-bodied wine, you should think about it now for next year.”
There is a way to get around that how-ever.
“If you want a barolo or anything that’s big and full-bodied, they take some time, but I have oak barrel aging,” MacKinnon said. “The oak does a couple of things. First, it breathes, so the wine gets air into it at a slow rate and it also adds tannins. The
wine ages more quickly. After it spends eight weeks in a barrel, it’s almost drink-able right away. It really makes a big dif-ference.”
One people have tried the oak barrel method, he said, they tend to use it exclu-sively.
“I keep buying extra barrels all the time just to keep up,” he said.
MacKinnon has been helping Quali-cum Beach residents make their own wine for two years now, but he has been making wine as a hobby for the past 30 years. That experience gives him the knowledge base to be able to give his customers the right advice they need to get the result they and their palettes are looking for.
“A lot of people will say, for instance, that they like Yellowtail Shiraz and ask if they can make that,” he said. “I tell them I can make an Australian wine that will be comparable. We can make a version of just about anything you can find in the li-quor store.”
MacKinnon is so sure that wine lovers will come back for more he’s offering a special half price discount for new cus-tomers, as well as free wine bottles.

Federal Industry Minister James Moore has fired back at Canada’s big three telecom firms in response to their cam-paign against the potential en-try of U.S. mobile phone carrier Verizon.
Incumbent phone compa-nies Bell Canada, Telus and Rogers have taken to the air-waves with ads objecting to Verizon’s ability to use existing infrastructure without having to build its own network if the U.S. giant buys up one of Canada’s two smaller wireless firms that are up for sale.
They also have a website, fairforcanada.ca, that contends Verizon would threaten Canadi-an jobs and potentially the pri-vacy and security of cellphone users.
Their spokesman accused the Tories of scoring populist politi-cal points by tempting a “misin-formed” public with the lure of lower prices through more com-petition.
Moore said the companies’ claims are filled with assump-tions and misinformation about the federal government’s intent in allowing a new foreign wire-less competitor.
“I think Canadians know very well what is at stake and they know dishonest attempts to skew debates via mislead-ing campaigns when they see them,” Moore said in a letter on his website.
“Our responsibility is toward a broader public interest, and we are serving Canadians with our policy approach.”
The federal Conservatives launched their own website Fri-day to counter the telcos – con-sumersfirst.ca.
It underscores the high pric-es Canadians pay compared to other countries and argues Can-
ada’s big three carriers won’t be forced out by Verizon because
they own 85 per cent of the wire-less spectrum.

Parksville’s Beachfest has wrapped up another suc-cessful year. e masterpieces created by world class sculptors back on July 13 have been deconstructed. e creations made on Parksville’s beach during the amateur team sand sculpting competition August 3 didn’t last long. ey were created during one of the lowest tides of the year and were gone when the tide came in. EmilyMahoney and Rebecca Stephenson of team Bear Ne-cessities helped create a bear sculpture which won rst place in the team category.
Independent Marine Supply Store and Paci c Cot-tage on the Alberni Highway in Coombs had a cool con-test recently and gave away a $700 in atable multi-pur-pose paddle board. Roy Brooks of Quadra Island who entered on-line not only won the board he was also giv-en a life jacket and leash to go with it by owner Cynthia Brown.
Award winning artist Jessey LaFontaine’s creative gourds highlight some of the diverse wildlife that can be found in our area. You can nd Jessey with her unique artwork at the Craig Street Market in Parksville on Tues-day, August 20 and at the Qualicum Beach Artisans Mar-ket on Friday, August 23.
A growing interest in labyrinths has a lot of people going around in circles these days. e ancient patterns have existed in di erent forms around the world for over 4000 years and many people nd walking a labyrinth calming. Parksville Community Park now has a perma-nent labyrinth and next month the Labyrinth Society will hold its annual conference in Canada for the rst time. On September 16 to 22 Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Resort will host labyrinth enthusiasts and experts from around the world. e international conference will be a gathering of those who use and love labyrinths to learn new tech-niques, try new labyrinth designs, and support the spread of labyrinths across the world.
Life is a circus for Kat Irvine. At the age of 14, Kat’s father promised him $100 if he could learn how to jug-gle. He earned that $100 and took the skill and ran with it. Now Kat is a well rounded performer specializing in juggling, single and multi ball contact juggling, poi, con-tact sta , folding fans and rope dart, just to name a few. He led the RDN circus camp August 12 to 16 at Oceans-ide Place in Parksville teaching kids hoop, clown, spin poi and other skills. You can marvel at some Vesta Fire entertainers August 31 at the Lighthouse Country Fair in Qualicum Bay.
Members of the Errington Volunteer Fire Depart-ment didn’t have to put any res out on August 17 while they were ipping pancakes, scrambling eggs and grilling sausages at the Errington Hall. Over 200 people enjoyed a delicious breakfast served up by Errington’s re ghting crew during Hi Neighbour Day. Each year the re ght-ers host the breakfast with all proceeds going towards the upkeep of the Errington Hall and each year Save-On-Foods in Parksville makes a huge donation of breakfast xings for the event.
11 year old Emily Mahoney and 13 year old Rebecca Stephenson were part of the team Bear Necessities which competed and won in the amateur division of sandcastle competition for Parksville’s Beachfest on August 3.
Jessey Lafontaine was among the 20 artisans at Milner Gardens and Woodland August 10 and 11 for the annual Art & Photography in the Garden. Jessey hand paints gourds turning each organic vessel into a piece of gorgeous artwork.
This youth group ran away and joined the circus last week. Led by juggler extraordinaire Kat Irvine of Vesta Fire Entertainment they learned all kinds of skills after participating in an RDN circus camp at Oceanside Place.
Roy Brooks of Quadra Island has no doubt been busy this summer paddle boarding. He was the lucky winner of an inflatable paddle board in a contest conducted by Cynthia Brown of Independent Marine Supply Store/Pacific Cottage.
Parksville Community Park’s old hovercraft landing site is now the home of a permanent outdoor labyrinth. This group of volunteers led by Holly Carnegie Letcher (far left) was busy last week painting the new circular mediation path.
Mason Sigouin and Anne Klok members of the Errington Volunteer Fire Department were busy flip-ping hundreds of flapjacks at Errington’s Hi Neighbour Day August 17 for a pancake breakfast fundraiser to benefit the Errington Hall.

Breakwell, Elizabeth Joan “Betty”Elizabeth Joan “Betty” Breakwell passed peacefully August 8th, one day short of her ninetieth birthday.
She has gone to join her beloved husband Mel, parents J.C. and Florence Bailey, and four sisters. Left to remember her feisty ways are her children Sage, Lynnette (Ron), Martin (Elaine), Randy, Ken (Debra), and Kerry (Marion), sister Ruth, numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many friends, her dear buddy Ann Klees, and her precious canine companion “Candy”.Betty was a Qualicum girl, born in Dashwood / Little Qualicum in 1923 and moved to Qualicum at age 4. She attended Qualicum School - now The Old Schoolhouse Art Centre - and taught horseback trail riding on the family property. As Betty Parker, she began the Red Cross swimming program in Qualicum, teaching generations of children to swim and be “water safety wise” at our beautiful beach. Her vision to have an indoor pool finally became a reality some thirty years later in Qualicum’s noteworthy aquatic centre that boasts some 80,000 visitors a year.Another swimming venture dear to her heart was the Mile Swim which she began in 1957 with the JC Bailey Memorial trophy which she presented in honour of her father who was a long distance swimming champion. Betty’s involvement in the community continued with working in Craig Reid’s grocery store and the CIBC bank for many years where she dealt with many Qualicum residents. Upon moving to The Gardens, Betty continued her community involvement by taking on the tasks of treasurer for the Resident’s Council, plus Tuck Shop and Saturday Night Live duties. She was a strong advocate for the village wheelchair accessible trail for all walkers, cyclists, dogs and companions. We will remember Mum, Granny, Betty, a proud member of the Legion for her dedication to making her community a better place for all. A toast to you from all your family and friends.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on September 28th at 2 o’clock in the Qualicum Legion Hall.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the food bank or Salvation Army.
Ethel SimpsonAug 26, 1917 – Aug 3, 2013
It is with great sadness that the family of Ethel Simpson announces her passing on August 3, 2013 just 3 weeks shy of her 96th birthday.Ethel is survived by her daughter Gina (Patrick) Regush, grandchil-dren Dylan, Jonathan, Suzanne (Paul) and great grandchildren Sam and Sophie DaSilva, sister Ida Hogan, as well as several nieces and nephews, and a circle of treasured friends.Ethel is predeceased by her husband Sam, son Patrick and brothers Tom, Norman, and William.Ethel was born in Prince Rupert in 1917 and lived there for many years of her life. It was there she met Sam and they married in 1953. In their retirement years they made their home in Qualicum Beach where they en-joyed wonderful friendships and a love of golf. Later, after Sam’s passing she moved to Kamloops to be with her children. All her life Ethel was an avid cook and loved to bake. She hosted many meals with friends and family over the years and they were always deli-cious and memorable. Both Ethel and Sam had a gift for fostering lifelong friendships, and so she will be fondly remembered by many.
A memorial service will be held at the Kamloops Funeral Home on Sunday August 25, 2013 at 2pm.
Interment of her ashes will take place in Prince Rupert at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the ‘Mar-jorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice’, 72 Whiteshield Crescent, Kamloops, BC V2E 2S9 where Ethel was lovingly cared for at the end of her life.
Richard (Rick) Herman JohnNovember 9, 1944 – August 13, 2013

Left behind are his wife of 39 years, Shirley; daughter, Zainna Lewis; grandson, Jacob Lewis; sister, Dorothy (Michael) Barnett; sister-in-law, Christa (Arnie) Williams; his adored mother-in-law, Elsie Schummer; and numerous nieces and nephews.Rick was a resident of Trillium Lodge for his last year and heartfelt thanks to the staff who provided tender care and treated him like family.Rick had a kind and generous heart, with a smile and spirit to match. At his request, there will be no service. His remains will be scattered over his treasured fishing spots at a later date, in keeping with his wishes.
In lieu of flowers, please honour Rick’s memory by giving the gift of your time, friendship, and kindness to a loved one or someone in need.Good luck catching the big ones, honey, but you

Generals looking like strong teamwww.pqbnews.com
Oceanside team gearing up for season with good mix of new and old, big and smallJAMES CL [email protected]
Oceanside’s Save-On-Foods Generals kick started the 2013/14 season over the weekend when around 40 players hit the ice for the local Jr. B club’s main camp.
It is returning head coach Brent De-merais’ first shot at overseeing the team from scratch, and anyone that stopped at Oceanside Place on the weekend saw lots of up-tempo inter-squad action, complete with referees — one game Friday, two on Saturday and another Sunday.
“Very up-tempo. Good speed, good hit-ting. I’m really impressed with what we’ve got here this year,” Demerais confirmed when asked about the pace and the spirited play out on the ice. “I think we’re way faster than we were last year, we’re bigger, we’ve got a good mix going on.
“We knew what we had coming (to camp) so we just wanted to see what some of these kids could do on certain lines. Put them in different situations and see how they reacted,” Demerais said of the trial-by-fire format.
Also back for another season with the Gens is assistant coach Rob Gaudreault and longtime equipment manager Andrew Piercy.
The Generals are still looking for a team trainer.
Demerais said at this point he expects they’ll have about seven returnees this year, the most notable being homegrown forward Travis Flug, 19, who will wear the C for Oceanside this year, taking over the captaincy and looked upon for leadership.
“It’s great to have him back, he’ll be a mentor for the younger kids this year for sure,” said Demerais.
Flug was flying on Sunday, leading by example and bulging the twine for the White team.
Looking forward, the Generals will have a decidedly older look this year. VIJHL teams are allowed to carry six 20 year olds.
Last year the Generals only had two on the team, this year “we’re going to have six for sure, and we’ll have around 10 or 11 17-year-olds.”
Also in his element and clearly enjoy-ing himself on the weekend was QB goalie Liam Giroux.
Liam had been expecting to battle his older brother Kiefer and a few others for the starting position, but that all changed last week when Kiefer made the decision not to play this season, opting instead to go to school.
Liam and Alex Olson from the Main-land, both 17, were both signed to the team on the weekend, while Powell River puckstopper Alex Mastrodonato, who was with the team in a backup and starter role last season, was released.
Also In his element on the week-end was Nanaimo’s Jonah Pearson. The 17-year-old forward is indicative of the kind of young players Demerais says he’s looking for. “Absolutely,” said Demerais. “He’s quick and he’s fast . . . great kid.”
Pearson was one of four players at main camp that spent last year in central Wash-ington playing with the U16 Wenatchee Wild who compete in the NAHL (North American Hockey League).
“It’s fast really good tempo and I think we’re going to have a good team this sea-son,” he said from the tunnel before head-ing back out on the ice with his new team-mates Sunday. “It’s going to be great.”
In the meantime, coach Demerais said he’s looking forward to the start of prac-tices this week, and points out the Gens could be missing as many as 10 players who have been invited to Jr. A camps.
GAME TO HELP FAMILY: The trag-ic death of local teen Lukas Whibley has been met with an outpouring of support.
“Our community lost a young man, and to support the Whibley family in such a hard time,” said Generals’ secretary Eliz-abeth Cudmore, adding “so many com-munity groups wanted to help so we are organizing a silent auction,” at the Gen-erals’ exhibition home game against the Nanaimo Buccaneers Aug. 31 (7:30 p.m. start). Go early to bid on various items with all proceeds going to the Whibley family. Admission to the exhibition game is $5, with the Generals donating proceeds to a scholarship fun in Whibley’s name.
If you’d like to contribute or volunteer, e-mail Megan Olsen at [email protected] or call 250-937-0999. Silent auc-tion donations can be dropped off at Post-Net on the Alberni Hwy.

Men and Ladies battle for Salmon Can TrophyThe weather was perfect, the
greens were fast and the play was exciting.
That was the scene when the Parksville Lawn Bowling Club held its annual Men’s and La-dy’s Club Triples Tournament.
On the lady’s side, first place
went to the team of Sandi Mitch-ell, Bev Beath and Janie Worel. Second was earned by Praiwan Davis, Doreen Nordentoft and Lennie Jarrett. Third place was skipped by Anita Wood, with Bobbi Cyr and Jean Roberts.
John Scofield, Larry Lirette
and David Croot took first in the men’s, with Chris Wood, Gil Simpson and Ed Russell taking second. Mick Banks, Rob Mat-thews and Jim Patterson took third.
The Salmon Can Trophy, a.k.a. The Battle of the Sexes,
was the finale to the weekend event with the top men’s teams playing off against the top wom-en’s. It was a quick three ender game, with lots of rousing sup-port from the large and enthu-siastic crowd. The pompoms were flashing and noisemakers
rattled as shots were made and scores counted. In the end, the men prevailed ...again.
“Oh well there’s always next year,” one disappointed female fan in the crowd said shaking her head in disbelief.

Home grown goalie Liam Giroux, above having a laugh at the bench during a break on Sunday, was one of two 17-year-old puckstoppers signed by the Oceanside Generals on the week-end. Action at right is from a training camp inter-squad game on Sunday at Oceanside Place.

mid-island castaways
Learn the fly fishing fundamentalsGet hooked on fly fishing like others who have taken the class and moved on to advancedJAMES CL [email protected]
The Mid-Island Castaways Fly Fish-ing Club is set to hold it’s third annual Fundamentals of Fly Fishing course, and many of those that have taken part in it in the past have been, well, hooked.
Case in point is Nanoose Bay’s Ai-mee Hersley who took the course with her younger brother Kevin the first year, and has since taken some of the club’s advanced courses.
“I love it,” she said, adding “it’s a nice excuse to get outside and go to the more remote spots to go fishing. It’s quite so-cial as well ...it’s just a real fun sport to do.”
Scheduled for Sept. 8, 15, 22 and 29 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre with classes starting at 2 and 4 p.m., the fun-damentals of fly fishing course is intend-ed for men and women, says MICFFC’s Bruce Morrison and is “designed for people who are interested in getting started fly fishing ...the course is taught by a group of dedicated volunteers who devote a great deal of time to teaching,” he said, pointing to the likes of Ted and Devina Brookman who operate Teddy’s Tackle in Chemainus.
“They are members of the club and drive up to Qualicum for each session ... they teach the fly tying and Teddy gives some of the talks.”
Accoring to Morrison, “participants learn about fly fishing equipment, how to care for the equipment, the foods fish feed upon, how to tie flies, how to tie the
knots used by fly fishers, and how to cast a fly rod.”
Casters will learn the vertical over-head cast and the roll cast, “as well as how to false cast and shoot line.”
A five or six weight single handed fly rod is recommended for the course.
Two handed rods are not used. Stu-dent fly rods should have a floating fly line with a leader. There are a limited number of loaner rods for those who do not own their own fly rods, which are given out on a first come, first serve basis. Applications should indicate if a
loaner rod is needed.Knot tying and fly tying take place in-
side the Civic Centre in the Booth room. Casting practice takes place on the lawn behind the building.
Class sizes are limited to 20 people, and are on a first come first serve basis.
Students need a membership in the castaways to get into the course — membership applications are available from the club website (www.midisland-castaways.com).
Those wishing to take the course should send their applications and fees to club secretary Ron Walker.
Those who are already members should register for the course with Walk-er. There is an additional charge of $20, which may be paid at the first class. This fee covers the cost of the course manual and refreshments.
For information on joining the Cast-aways contact Ron Walker by email at [email protected].
For more information on the fly fish-ing course, contact Bruce at [email protected] , or call (250) 248-5914.
One of the lures of fly fishing Hersley says is that “there’s a constant learning curve that goes with it — you’re always learning something new, always polish-ing your skills.”
The fundamentals of fly fishing course she adds, “is a great introduction to the sport.”
“It gives you the skills to get out there and start fishing and then you can just go from there.”
Fairwinds
Fun-filled golf tourney helps feed hungryA reminder the fourth annual Thanks
for Giving golf tournament is fast ap-proaching, and organizers are hoping for a full field.
Slated for Fairwinds Golf Club Satur-day, Sept. 28, the popular (and important) fun-filled charity golf tournament is orga-nized by Nanoose Community Services, which operates the Nanoose Bay Com-munity Cupboard.
“The food bank in Nanoose struggles, as food banks do throughout the prov-ince, to provide groceries throughout the year,” says director Virginia Brucker, add-
ing “we get lots of donations from October through December, but very little food or cash is donated from January through September. Because our food bank oper-ates out of a very small space at Nanoose Place, rather than relying on donated food, we buy most of the groceries and toiletry items our food bank provides.”
To that end, the Thanks for Giving golf tournament “raises almost 50% of our an-nual operating budget.”
Coastal Community Credit Union and Fairwinds are the tournament’s major sponsors. Parksville Chrysler has donated
hole in one insurance for a new vehicle, and Brian Dugaro from Investors Group has offered a $5,000 cash prize for a hole in one as well.
The auction will feature an auto-graphed Trevor Linden jersey and the silent auction features terrific donations from local businesses and artists.
“You don’t have to be a dedicated golf-er to participate,” says Brucker. “The em-phasis is on fun and making new friends.”
The format is a four person scramble, and the entry fee of $110 includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, and dinner.
There is an early bird registration prize for entries received before Aug. 30. Pre-registration closes Sept. 23.
Those interesting in helping the cause can enter as a team, as a couple, or as in-dividual players. To register go to www.nanoosecommunityservices.com.
For more information, call Virginia or Charlie Brucker at Nanoose Community Services at 250-468-9888 or e-mail [email protected].
Forms are also available at the Fair-winds Pro Shop and Activity Centre.

Either pull around and park oppo-site or park and cross the road (carefully, of course!) On foot, fol-low the old 4x4 track for around a km until you see the notice board for the trailhead on your right.

e mountains have long held an attraction for man. Being amongst them in a wilderness setting inspires awe. e perspectives from their anks and summits o er new and inspiring views of familiar places, as well as a humbling perspective on our presence in contrast to the magnitude of our surroundings. While access-ing such experiences under one’s own power multiplies the rewards signi cantly, the chal-lenges of navigation in such settings are often an intimidating obstacle. While making things too easy impacts the sense of value achieved by one’s e orts, some routes o er superb compro-mises.
Within our area, the CPR Trail is an out-standing example of this. It was built in 1912 by the Canadian Paci c Railway as a pack-horse route to link its Cameron Lake resort with an overnight hut on the anks of Mt. Cokely. Such investment clearly demonstrates that, even a hundred years ago, the beauty and accessibility of our area was recognised by both the public and by the nation’s most signi cant provider of tourism.
By some miracle, the route has survived the ravages of wild res and logging (although evi-dence of both exists along the way). is makes the CPR Trail, also known as e Old Arrow-smith Trail, the oldest intact trail on Vancouver Island. Blasting and logging continue to impact the trail’s surroundings, to the extent that blast-ed rock literally sprays the trail in places and, at times, the trail will be closed above a certain point. In lieu of government stewardship, and in spite of public apathy, hard lobbying by a number of groups have been necessary to pro-tect this historic route from succumbing to the destructive results of short term commercial interests.
Fortunately the route remains as a steep, but consistently graded, switchback trail that starts a short walk from Cameron Lake and rises more than a kilometre to a point just below the nal approach to Mount Cokely. e surroundings are mostly majestic, second growth evergreens which, combined with the northern aspect of the grade, o er shade on hot days and an ideal environment for fungi. By following the gully through which McBey Creek ows, the ascent is unusually lacking in side trails. is, in conjunc-tion with years of footfall, leaves little chance of summer hikers going astray. ere are a couple of points where the trail splits but, on the out-ward leg, the rule is “if in doubt keep heading uphill!” with the reverse true on the descent. e only real options come at the short out and
back detour for a look at McBey Falls, and when a signpost is reached o ering the choice of fork-ing left to the main viewpoint or right up McBey Creek. At this point your decision is which way to follow a loop which brings you back to the same spot in a few hours’ time. My preference is to take the left option and follow a clockwise route around the upper part of the trail.
In doing this, one has the option to assess the weather and one’s legs while enjoying the re-wards of the viewpoint (clouds permitting!) and turning back early if wary about the condition of either. For most hikers capable of completing the whole route, the timing of this stop coordi-nates well with a substantial snack. e view-point itself is signed as an Eastwards detour from the route and o ers an expansive panora-ma of Oceanside and beyond from a bare rocky outcrop. A full circuit takes the majority of hik-ers between 5 and 8 hours so prepare accord-ingly and don’t be afraid to turn back if in doubt of your ability.
On re-joining the trail, the gradient lessens as you make your way across the undulating shoul-der which leads to the base of Mt. Cokely’s rocky knuckles. Flatter terrain has allowed the forma-tion of some fascinating pools amongst the trees and marsh grasses. As the trail approaches its turnaround point it crosses the old Arrowsmith cross country ski area, and coloured trail mark-
ers can still be seen nailed high in the trees. is gives a clue to the fact that for much of the year hikers must come equipped with snowshoes and navigational expertise as any trail can easily be lost once covered with snow.
At its high point, the trail intersects the main gravel road that runs around the peaks of Ar-
rowsmith and Cokely. Our route turns right and meets McBey Creek, whose course it follows downhill. Around an hour’s walk will bring you to a quaint, improvised picnic spot by the creek. is provides an ideal opportunity to replenish for the nal couple of hours of descent. Before long, the switchbacks return as the hill-side falls away more steeply and you will nd yourself re-trac-ing the path of your outward journey back to the signpost at the foot of the trail.
