I learnt about the reproductive cycle for the fi ve major classes of vertebrates (the mammals were most interesting!); I learnt about Reign of Queen Victoria (glad I never met her); I learnt all the riv-ers in Russia (never learnt the Canadian ones); I learnt how to write Haiku (that will never pay the bills!) and I learnt to add, subtract and multiply polynomials (among many other things) BUT no one ever taught me about money. I never learnt to balance a cheque book, I didn’t understand the rules of credit cards, I had no idea what a credit bureau was, they never taught me about investing and I had never made a budget. I graduated from high school with NO Financial Literacy.
By defi nition Financial Literacy is the understand-ing of how money works in the world: how to earn money, how to manage money, how to invest money (turn it into more) and how to donate money to help others. Financial Literacy is the
set of skills that allows us to make informed and ef-fective decisions with all of our fi nancial resources.
I learned Financial Literacy through the school of hard knocks; it’s not a route I’d
recommend, the outcome isn’t guaranteed. I meet with people from all walks of life; I see a variety of nationalities, the young and the old.. The one thing they have in common is that they’re all struggling to manage their fi nances because their Financial Literacy is low. I can’t agree with them more when they say: “I wish I learned this in school!”
Financial Literacy is gradually being added to the school curriculum so I have hope that the next
They didn’t teach me that in school...I was a good student, studying diligently, believing that at the end of 13 long years of school I would be prepared for the real world.
generation’s Financial Literacy will be much higher than the current generation. For those of you who are unable to take advantage of the new school curriculum, stay posted, I’ll be bringing you for tips to improve your Financial Literacy over the coming months.

The cast and crew are coming to Courtenay for two performances at the Sid Williams again this year, Dec 10th and 11th at 7pm. Tickets are already 50% sold out for this year’s show. This year’s singing and dancing extravaganza includes a Queen tribute, a James Bond medley and a Sound of Music medley, Michael Bublé songs, a nostalgia tribute as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favorites!
Cast auditions were held over three days in Vancouver in May, and over one hundred young dancers and singers came out to audition. Four singers and five dancers have been cast and are coming to the island from across Canada to perform. The two-week intensive rehearsal period is set to begin on November 19th. The cast and crew will be faced with the task of bringing to life over 50 pieces of music.
Katy Mayert creator of this show, was in London, England this summer choosing more dazzling costumes for this year’s show.
“I love going to see Mr Bahal in my favorite costume store in London. The shop is full of sequins! In talking with Mr Bahal, I learned this time that each sequin is sewed on individually to each dress. The quality is amazing!”. For more information about the show, please visit www.yellowpointchristmasspectacular.
ca. It’s quickly becoming a tradition for audiences across Vancouver Island. A favorite among bus tour groups, staff party events, family and friend reunions and festive celebrations. Book your tickets soon so you don’t miss this spectacular event.

Over the past few years it seemed every expert was telling us that interest rates would be rising, but after years of record low fi xed rates, I think many of us stopped believing the headlines.
With bond prices dropping and yields on the rise, those rates that are tied to bonds have shown dramatic movement over the past month. For the most qualifi ed, the rates on 5-year fi xed mortgages have increased from a low of 2.89% to 3.59%, and are potentially still rising.
The term, “jumping on the band-wagon” now comes to mind. Seems we may be seeing it in the mortgage industry as well. In the past few weeks, there have been number of articles speaking to the virtues of variable-rate mortgages.
Are variable-rate products quickly becoming the better option?
Should you renew into a current ARM product at PRIME - 40(ish)or take the security of a fi xed-rate term in the fear that rates will continue to rise?
Economists are predicting the Bank of Canada will hold the overnight rate steady into 2014. That said, take these predictions with a grain of salt as many of those same economists had already called for increases back in 2012 and 2013. Economic conditions change and so do outlooks and forecasts.
Relatively speaking, variable-rate mortgages are cheaper today at PRIME 3%
Before making any fi nal decisions keep in mind two last items. First, in late 2008 both fi xed rates and PRIME were dropping. Today, PRIME is remaining fl at for the time being while fi xed rates are rising. Second, credit and lending guidelines have changed signifi cantly in the past fi ve years.
Today’s borrowers are better qualifi ed and have fewer opportunities to defer interest costs using extended amortization and lower down payment options.
That said, our rate e nv i ro n m e n t to d ay compared to August 2008
is quite different since both variable and fi xed rates do not seem to be dropping. To really understand the best option, it’s best to discuss these factors with your dedicated mortgage broker. I can review the various products available and can help you select the best one that fi ts your lifestyle and fi nancial goals.
In the end, market volatility breeds uncertainty but it also brings opportunity. This is an ideal time to talk mortgage strategy.

The manager of a large office noticed one of his department heads had hired a new man, so the boss called him into his office for a little orientation speech. “What is your name?” he asked. “John,” the new guy replied. The manager scowled, “Look, I don’t know what kind of place you worked at before, but I don’t call anyone by their first name. It breeds familiarity and that leads to a breakdown in authority. I refer to my employees by their last names only - Smith, Jones, Baker - that’s all. I am to be referred to only as Mr. Robertson. Now that we got that straight, what is your last name?” The new guy sighed and said, “Darling. John Darling.” “Okay, John, the next thing I want to tell you is...”
