Why is Orthopaedics Important for a Trauma Center?
• 50% of hospitalized injuries are a result of extremity
trauma (motor vehicle accidents = 20% and
industrial accidents = 20%)
• 12% of all functional impairment (medical and non-
medical) due to limb trauma
Traumatic Musculoskeletal Injuries
• 19.2 million injuries result in disability annually, 564 million days per year work lost
• 147 million workdays and 21.2 billion school days lost each year secondary to musculoskeletal injuries (annual cost $26 billion)
• 51% of workers with an extremity fracture do not return to work by 6 months
• 600,000 fractures with delayed/non-union annually
• $325 billion total cost of limb trauma annually
