MEMORANDUM

To: Mr. Walter O. Watson, Jr., Div. of Water and land Development

From: District Geologist, Ground Water Branch, Honolulu, Hawaii

Subject: Test hole at Kanaha Pond, Maui

Enclosed is a summary of field notes made by Kiyoshi Takasaki at the test hole at Kanaha Pond, Maui, during the period from 8:30 a.m., November 23, 1962 to 4:00 p.m., November 24, 1962.

In addition to the notes, Kiyoshi has the following comments on the test hole.

1.

2.

3.

4.

Judging from the behavior of the water level in the well on November 23, 1962, it is likely that the most permeable rock in the hole is below the 78-foot depth.

The data for the early part of the pumping test, before 3:15 p.m. on November 23, 1962, is not conclusive because the water being pumped was still full of silt. The rise in water level during this period indicated that the well was being cleaned out and was improving in its ability to transmit water.

The specific capacity of 65 gpm per foot of drawdown might be improved somewhat by a longer pump period, inasmuch as the water was still colored by silt when the pump was stopped.

The height of the water level in the well above the pond level will not increase substantially with further drilling. The yield of the well, however, probably will increase with further deepening of the well.

& Zerbe for the drilling of two test wells at Kanaba Pond, Kahului, Maui. These wells are the ones that we discussed with Bob Bara and it would be appreciated if someone could be made available to do whatever testing is necessary when each well is completed.

Ed Zerbe informed me that he will begin drilling at the first well on Monday, November 19, 1962 and he hopes to complete this well by the end of the week. W. will keep you informed. of the exact time 8OJDeOne should be sent over to Maui to make the teat.

Thank you very much for your help in the past on this matter.
