JIM REILLY, TENOR and BEATRICE GIERE, PIANO
Songs by five composers from five Nordic countries:
Peter Heise (Denmark), August Söderman (Sweden),
Erkki Melartin (Finland), Emil Thoroddsen (Iceland),
and of course, Edward Grieg (Norway)
$8 donation You may join us for a light lunch 11 –11:30 a.m. (included in price)
Jim Reilly, tenor (our Music Director Emeritus), and Beatrice Giere, piano, will present a program of songs by five Nordic composers: Peter Heise (Denmark), August So derman (Sweden), Emil Thoroddsen (Iceland), Erkki Melartin (Finland), and of course Norway's own Edward Grieg. The texts of the poems will be sung in the five languages of those countries; the Grieg songs are in Nynorsk, with poetry by Vinje. And the glori-ous and varied landscapes of the Nordic countries — the woods in Denmark, the mountains, brooks, and even berries of Norway, the sad setting sun in Finland, a mysterious Troll Lake in Sweden, and an Icelandic village nes-tled in a beautiful valley — have inspired these composers to write some of their best songs. At Mindekirken, we are so fortunate to hear a lot of Grieg; but the great riches of the Romantic song literature from the other Nordic countries and their composers come to us less often. This is a program for lovers of the beauties of the North, Nordic poetry, and the riches of Nordic classical music!

Hakuna Matata Children’s Choir is made up of children from Kenya, East Africa. Most of these children are from the slums and from a very poor background. This Connect with a Child Children’s Choir is dedicated to spreading love, hope and joy while raising awareness for the desperate plight of orphans and other vulnera-ble children. Their colorful clothing, pounding drums, and sweet voices demonstrate their hope and dream for a brighter future. Their inspira-tional stories of resilience have in-stilled hope in the hearts of all those who have seen them perform.
Hakuna Matata Children’s Choir consists of children who have been sponsored by families who gave them the opportunity to better their future through education. Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presents Connect with a Child’s vision and mission in every place they visit. The experience they acquire from travelling around the world gives the children exposure to other cultures, broadening their world-view. It also gives them confidence and boldness and helps them rise up out of their own situations of sadness and despair. Free-will offering to “Connect with a Child”

About the Festival
The Leif Eriksson International Festival (LEIF)
was formed in 1987 under the leadership of
Pastor John Mauritzen, Mindekirken (The Nor-
wegian Lutheran Memorial Church in Minne-
apolis) and members of the Danish, Finnish,
Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish communi-
ties and now also the Saami, to establish an
annual festival to celebrate Nordic cultural
roots in the United States. Over the years, LEIF
events have brought top-ranked Nordic talent
to Minneapolis. This helps us all explore the
values and goals of today’s Nordic countries
and share them with other Nordic Americans.
It also gives the Nordic community an oppor-
tunity to share its heritage with all citizens.
