3 Church of the Ascension

ASCENSION THIS WEEK

PASTOR’S CORNER: Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

God’s word reminds us today of the dangers of selfish ambition. From the Letter of St. James we hear, “Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice” (Jas 3:16). In the Gospel passage, Jesus,

in response to his disciples vying for who would be the “greatest” says, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all” (Mk 9:35). Jesus takes a child, a symbol of powerlessness and dependence, and says that those who wish to lead, must reach out lovingly to the lowliest and powerless among them.

All who call themselves disciples are invited to heed Jesus’ teaching and to imitate his behavior. Especially those who feel called to leadership are invited to put aside selfish ambition. The crisis experienced in the Church over the past decades, its obvious abuse of power and lack of concern for the innocent is, at least in part, a prime example of the tragedy that results when selfish ambition takes over. Justifying sinful behavior and explaining away corrupt practices often flows from pride and selfish ambition. But, it is not limited to the Church. Look around! Selfish ambition is everywhere. In politics, the lust for power has eclipsed working for the common good; in the corporate world and in Hollywood, the “dog-eat-dog” mentality is on open display.

Selfish ambition often begins in seemingly innocent enough ways. We are taught as children to be ambitious, to be independent and many are told “you can be whatever you want to be.” But sometimes the young are pushed to excel, even to the point of neglecting spiritual formation, prayer and worship for the sake of achievement – so they can be the best. Many of us were schooled in a powerful work ethic and taught that our value is measured, not by who we are, but by what we can achieve. Selfish ambition can cause great havoc in one’s life and in the lives of those around them.

The solution is not found in the remedies put forth by the world, but by the Gospel. The pain brought about by selfish ambition in the Church, business, politics or in one’s personal life is not the result of religion, but results from ignoring what right-religion offers. The Lord Jesus teaches us that leadership, or one might even say “success,” is achieved, not by selfish ambition, but by loving service; by offering one’s life as a gift in service of family, Church, co-workers and neighbors. The world will be a better place for everyone when we strive to avoid selfish ambition.

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”

Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life, COMMUNION SERVICE ONLY September 28 - 30, 7AM Masses Please note on September 28 through September 30, we will be offering Communion Service only at 7AM mass. Fr. Donald Cullen will be visiting and the celebrant for the Noon masses those same days. Also, reconciliations will be unavailable.

ASCENSION THIS WEEK

STEWARDSHIP “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” MARK 9:35 Jesus teaches us that we are called to love one another. Love involves sacrifice. Sacrifice is a word that many of us don’t like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God. FIRST RECONCILIATION September 19, 2:00PM Gathering Area First Reconciliation Parent-Child Meeting Sunday, September 19 at 2:00PM. The Gathering Area in the church is where check-in will take place. ALL ACS & YFF parents and kids.

COVERED IN PRAYER September 23, 6:00PM St. Luke Rm.

Covered in Prayer is the “blanket making” ministry of Church of the Ascension. We gather on the 4th Thursday of the month at 6:00PM to make blanket kits, separate fabric, talk and generally enjoy each other’s company! You can come and pick up material and take it home, or you can stay and learn how to make blankets. We send over 150 blankets each year to parishioners & friends who are ill or hurting, so your help is needed. No need to be an expert seamstress. We gratefully accept donations of cotton, fleece & flannel materials & yarns. We look forward to meeting you on Thursday evening! Questions? Joanie James 913-681-6770 or Sally Virgo 913-897-7587.

OUR COMMON HOME More than 1900 years ago, St. James wrote the letter we read this Sunday. It raised the flag back then that selfish ambition provokes "foul" behavior and social disorder within the human family. Jesus made it a point to sit the Twelve down to help them get their priorities in order. Perhaps we need to sit down with Jesus and consider: Are those of us who live in the land of wealth and abundance, i.e., compared to what most of humanity has, protective of what we have and determined to keep it that way? We shouldn’t want to be at the top, nor fear being at the bottom, but rather eager to be servants to others – even willing to be among the last. Caring for our brothers and sisters means caring for the home we share. This responsibility is “essen al to a

life of virtue.” – (LS 217). Source: Catholic Climate Covenant/Integral Faith; Pope Francis.

PARISH CLERGY ASSIGNMENT CHANGES: Last weekend Fr. Viet announced that he would be taking a leave of absence for a few months to address some personal issues. We look forward to his return with renewed vigor and health.

Unfortunately, I must also announce the departure of Fr. Bala. The Archdiocese has informed me that his skills are needed at another parish to serve as an administrator in the absence of a pastor. Thus, he will leave on Saturday, September 18th for his new assignment.

The Archdiocese has assigned Fr. Mohana Bathineni, a priest from India, to serve here at Ascension as a parochial vicar (associate pastor) to replace Fr. Bala. Fr. Bathineni has recently been serving in dioceses in New Mexico and Arizona. Welcome Fr. Bathineni (he goes by Fr. “Mohan”).

Please pray for Fr. Viet while he is on leave, for Fr. Bala as he takes his new assignment and for Fr. Mohan as settles in here at Ascension.

WEEKLY MASS INTENSIONS

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE MEANING OF DISCIPLESHIP

The geography of today’s Gospel is significant. Jesus is completing his ministry in Galilee and beginning his journey to Jerusalem, where he will meet both death and resurrection. The prediction of his death placed here is the second of three in Mark’s Gospel, and as usual it is the occasion for an important teaching on the part of Jesus. Today that lesson is tied to the need for his disciples to embrace a ministry of service. A play on words in Aramaic would have linked the words “child” and “servant,” thus turning Jesus’ gesture of placing a child in their midst into an illustration of his understanding of himself as the Servant of the Lord. It is that same awareness of the meaning of their ministry that Jesus (and Mark) wishes to instill in the disciples. Theirs must be a ministry of service if they are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. And that service might even require of them that they be “handed over” to death. What would have been—in the culture of Jesus’ day—an ordinary discussion of social status (“who is the greatest”) becomes in Mark’s context a key insight into the meaning of discipleship for the disciples and for us.

MINISTRY NEWS

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY The Texas Heartbeat Act On May 19, 2021, the Texas governor signed the Texas Heartbeat Act (Act). The Act, with an effective date of September 1, prohibits most abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected by ultrasound which is usually around six weeks. Enforcement of the Act does not rest with state officials. Rather private individuals can bring a civil lawsuit against those who perform or aid an abortion, e.g. the doctor, nurse et al. For each proved violation of the Act, a citizen can collect up to $10,000. (No woman who has an abortion can be sued nor can someone who impregnated the abortion patient through a criminal act sue).

On July 13, a group of abortion facilities, doctors and associated groups (“the abortionists”) filed a federal lawsuit challenging the law. On August 7, they sought a preliminary injunction to keep the law from becoming effective. After unsuccessful attempts in the lower courts, the abortionists asked the Supreme Court to issue an injunction on the afternoon of August 30. In a 5-4 decision, the Court denied the abortionists request because they failed to prove their need for relief and sent the matter back to the lower courts for further hearing. With that decision, “Chicken Little” appeared on the scene. Talk show hosts, entertainment celebrities, furrow browed news casters, federal officials and a plethora of others poured forth their vile. For the first time in almost 50 years the abortion industry had its lucrative business of destroying innocent human lives curtailed. Where are we today: Roe v. Wade is still the law; the lower court will hold further hearings; and the abortionists can still question the constitutionality of the Act. But, for the present, the Act is applicable and abortions in Texas have dramatically decreased. (Sources: Numerous)
