pastor’s notebook

Dear Saint Michael Parishioners,

Happy Catholic Schools Week! Our annual celebration of Catholic education has arrived. Created by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) as a way to honor the unique identity and value of Catholic schools in the United States, this week marks our annual celebration of our parish school. Throughout this week we have scheduled a variety of communi-ty-building activities, service projects, and fun themed dress days for our students. As we enter into this memorable school week, please hold our school students in your prayers and pray for the ministry of Catholic education both here in our parish and throughout the nation.

Throughout this week our school will cel-ebrate our Catholic identity rooted in faith, knowledge, and service through our daily themes and activities. To me, this week reflects the beauty and importance of our

“family of families” through family partici-pation at Sunday Masses this weekend, our open house, and the family pizza picnic. It is always so rewarding for me to expe-rience our collective sense of community and school spirit this week! Please be sure to check out our school Facebook page to see all that we will be up to during this Catholic Schools Week.

As a ministry of Saint Michael Parish, we are so blessed to provide a Catholic edu-cation for our students rooted in academic excellence and committed to Catholic spiritual values. In alignment with our parish Elements of Discipleship, we guide our students to grow, worship, serve, give connect and share as disciples of Jesus. Ad-ditionally, St. Michael Parish School builds leadership capacity and fosters a sense of belonging in each student through our buddy program, Middle School Saint Houses, and student-led liturgies and service projects. We celebrate these educa-tional values (and more!), our heritage, and our “family of families” during our special annual Catholic Schools Week celebration this week.

One of the highlights of the week is our open house this Sunday, January 26 from 11am–1pm. This is the perfect time for you to meet our teachers, learn about our curric-

ulum, and get to know your parish school. Registration for new families will begin during open house. If you would like your children to attend our Pre-K or Kindergar-ten, registering them during open house is the very best way to ensure their spaces in these classes. We will have a fun scavenger hunt for children throughout the school building during open house for both our current students and prospective students. All are welcome!

While we are one amazing Pre-K–8th grade Catholic school, we are one of six Catholic schools in the South Sound Region, one of 73 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle, and one of 6,289 Catholic schools in the United States! We are one in solidar-ity with all Catholic schools nationwide as we all celebrate our Catholic identity this week. Since we are part of this much larger system of Catholic schools across the na-tion, I wanted to share these facts with you about Catholic education in the United States from the NCEA:

• We offer an education that combines Catholic faith and teachings with academic excellence.

• We partner with parents in the faith formation of their children.

• We set high standards for student achievement and help them succeed.

• We provide a balanced academic cur-riculum that integrates faith, culture, and life.

• We use technology effectively to en-hance education.

• We instill in students the value of service to others.

• We teach children respect of self and others.

• We emphasize moral development and self-discipline.

• We prepare students to be productive citizens and future leaders.

• We have a 99 percent high school graduation rate. 85 percent of our graduates go to college.

• We cultivate a faculty and staff who are dedicated, caring, and effective.

• We provide a safe and welcoming environment for all.

With these blessings of Catholic educa-tion in mind, please hold up all Catholic schools in your prayers—that we may all continue to form faithful disciples of Christ that are ready to make a real differ-ence in the world. Thank you for all that you do to support Catholic education!

Blessings,

Connor GeraghtyPrincipal

CATHOLIC ADVOCACY DAY COMING UP Thursday, February 20, 9am–4pm

Join with members and staff of Catholic parishes and organizations as we bring the Gospel message of care for our sisters and brothers to Olympia. This year’s theme is Catholics for the Common Good. The Washington State Bish-ops have approved a list of priorities for the 2020 Legislative Session: life issues, budget, aging and people with disabili-ties, Catholic Schools, children and families, restorative jus-tice, economic justice, environment, health care, housing, and immigration.

We will be asking for your help with advocacy on specific bills in these vital areas during the next few months. An especially powerful way of advocating is participating in Catholic Advocacy Day.

Please note, there will be no Mass, but the day will include prayer as part of the gathering in the Columbia Room at the Capitol. Events include issue briefings, legislative visit training, and meetings with Legislators.

REGISTER by February 7 at www.ipjc.org/cad.

FOOD BANK & THE OTHER BANK COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Every first weekend of the month we collect nonperishable food and financial donations for the Thurston County Food Bank. The Other Bank distributes personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies which cannot be purchased with food stamps. These items are essential for maintaining health and personal dignity. Financial support for the Food Bank is also much needed and appreciated. Please use the blue edged envelopes at the donation table and put them in the collection or give to a hospitality minister. Thank you for your generosity!

UPDATE

JOURNEY OF THE HEARTSPRING MISSION TRIP TO JUAREZ, MEXICODiscover God’s love in a week of prayer, service and simple community living.MARCH 28 – APRIL 4, 2020“Since we cannot see Christ, we cannot express our love to him. But we do see our neighbor and we can do for them what we would do for Christ if he were visible. Let us be open to God so he can use us. Let us put love into action.” – St. Teresa of CalcuttaJoin Deacon John and a parish mission team for a week of service, prayer and fellowship at the site of the Christmas miracle on the old garbage dump. Did you know over 600 parishioners have traveled to the Holy Grounds to share their love, prayer and talents with God’s people?

Now it’s your turn to let go and experience God’s plan for you.

COST $550 covers expenses for the week. Scholarships are available.

CONTACT Jim Hemmen at [email protected] or (602) 320-8078 or Deacon John at [email protected] for more information. Application packets are online at saintmichaelparish.org and can also be picked up at the parish office.

CLOTHING BANK ENHANCEMENTSOur wonderful clothing bank, fueled by donations and operated by Saint Vincent de Paul volunteers, has been an essential service to the needy in our community for several years. To make it even more effective, changes are coming in mid-February to the donation station. The clothing bank and donation shed will both close at 11am on February 1 and will be closed for a couple of weeks for re-signage, cleaning and change-over. The clothing bank will re-open on Febru-ary 18 for normal use by the needy.

The donation shed will re-open on February 19 and dona-tions will only be accepted on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 9am–1pm when the donation shed is staffed by a volunteer attendant who will screen do-nations and accept clean clothing and bedding only. Other materials will be redirected to other donation sites.

Presently, nearly half the material donated cannot be used in the clothing bank and must be disposed of. Screening donations as they are made will be much more efficient and eliminate later sorting and disposal. Your continued sup-port of this vital community service is much appreciated. If you wish to participate in this ministry, donation screeners are needed on Sundays for all or part of the 9am–1pm drop-off hours.

PASTORAL CARE & COMMUNITY OUTREACH UPDATESMany thanks to everyone who responded to our call for extra blankets for the Men’s Shelter! They have been crucial during these cold winter nights. The Men's Shelter has been consistently sheltering 15 men Monday–Thursday nights since November. We have started a mini-library and have communal biweekly meetings. They are incredibly ap-preciative of the hospitality, warm meals and sack lunches here at SMP. Thanks to all our overnight hosts, lead hosts, chefs, laundry angels and sack lunch volunteers who make this important ministry possible!

The weekend after Christmas the Pastoral Care team hosted a potluck and white elephant gift exchange in the Multipurpose Room. About 50 people attended the event and enjoyed a variety of delicious food and good company.

Our Grief Support Group for those carrying a heavy heart due to difficult life events started just before Thanksgiving and will end at the end of January. It is a wonderful gift to be able to support each other through our struggles, grief and life events. A cycle of Cancer Support meetings was just completed and the next one will start soon!

Why are priests celibate?"For the Latin rite, I am reminded of a phrase of St. Paul VI: 'I prefer to give my life before changing the law of celibacy.' This came to me and I want to say it because it is a courageous phrase. In a mo-ment more difficult than this—it was in the years 1968–1970. Personally, I think that celibacy is a gift to the Church. Secondly, I would say that I do not agree with permitting optional celibacy, no.” – Pope Francis, Panama in-flight press conference, 28 January 2019.

In a world that tends towards either sexual repression (the vice of prudishness), and hyper-sexualization (the vice of promiscuity or lust), chastity—the virtue of properly ordering our sexual appetite—can seem foolish at best, or dangerous at worst. However, everyone is called to chastity in their state in life, even for a married couple! Celibacy (also known as vir-ginity in Thomistic language) is an aspect of chastity, where the wholeness of one’s flesh is vowed and consecrated to God in an exclusive way. Celibacy is not just for priests: religious brothers and sisters vow celibacy as do many consecrated people who live in the world. Jesus was a celibate, sorry Dan Brown! All of the earliest sources of Christianity (the Gospels and the Letters in the New Testament) point to this. It was only with the Gnostic heresy following the death of the Apos-tles that we see a rise in the theory that Jesus was married, and these texts were harshly repudiated by the early Church as unfaithful to Jesus (ie. ‘not orthodox’). The Gnostics also denied the physical resurrection of Jesus from the dead, and that Jesus said Mary Magdalene would have to become a man to enter the kingdom of heaven—yikes (see ‘Gospel’ of Thomas, 114). While it is true that St. Peter was married (Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law, see Luke 38-41), some of the oth-

er Apostles seem to never have married. John the Baptist was celibate. Paul himself was a cel-ibate and encouraged the practice in the early Church (see 1 Cor 7). In Timothy, Paul speaks of bishops and deacons being married because the crop of candidates would have been mainly converts. . . who were already married, (see 1 Tim 3)! There was an encouragement for these early candidates to enter into continence (not engaging in marital intercourse) after ordina-

tion. And we haven’t even gotten to the deeper reasons why the Church continues to uphold celibacy as the norm for clerical life!

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNIONHave you considered becoming a communion minister for Mass? Maybe you've thought about it or been invited and never followed up. Training is coming up on Thursday, January 30 from 6–8pm in the downtown church. You must be a practicing Catholic who has been Confirmed.

This leadership role requires that you are a partner in the mission: pledge card on file and commitment to ongoing spiritual growth. We would like to know if you plan to attend but don't let it stop you from coming if the Spirit rearranges your day and prompts you to join us. We'll be praying that nothing gets in your way! inviteJesus' final command before ascending to heaven is "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations..."(MT 28:19). It's known as the Great Commission, not the "really good suggestion". Why? Because Jesus entrusted His disciples with a partnership in the salvation of the world. The transmission of the Gospel message depends on us. Jesus is counting on us to reach a particular person or persons with the message of His love and redemption. But how do we go about it?
