REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 AUGUST 21, 2016

Brothers and Sisters, On this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time we recall that through our Baptism God has invited us to the eternal kingdom. In today’s Gospel someone asks Jesus the question we still hear: “Lord will only a few people be saved?” (Lk 13:23) In response to the question Jesus warns the people not to be complacent but to do their best to enter through the narrow door. So how are we to understand the saying about the narrow door? A door can seem narrow to us for two reasons. First, perhaps the door really is too narrow relative to how big we are. Second, even if the door is wider than our body, we are unsteady on our feet and so can’t walk through it. It is in this sense that we hear Jesus speak about

the narrow door of salvation, the door being the cross. It is due to the sickness of sin in our lives that this door to salvation is narrow and that is because we prefer to remain in our sins rather than accept the help of the one who can heal us and bring us through that door. We find ways of living with our sins, of avoiding the reality of our lives. It is with the shock of the crucifixion that we are jolted out of our com-placency. In the cross the reality of this world is revealed, but that reality is not ultimately one of hopeless violence but of transforming love, healing us and raising us to new life. For all of us there are times in our lives when we need the help of others. The same is true with a life of faith, except in every moment of that life we need the help of Jesus Christ. The narrow door of our salvation is the help that God sends to each one of us in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through sharing in the life of the Church we receive the help we need to find healing and begin our journey to the kingdom of God. This journey will not be easy, as we will need to face our own frailty and the sickness of this world. Yet we do not do this alone, but through the help of Jesus Christ and those he sends to aid us in our struggles, others such as our Priests, Frs. Gene, Art, Adri, Jun and Sagay. Speaking of Fr. Art, this weekend we are celebrating his final days with our community of St. Catherine of Alexandria. It seems a bit odd to use the word celebrating when we as a community will be losing someone who has brought so much joy, music and humor to us. How-ever, what do we know about Fr. Art? Well we know he is a parish priest and as such he celebrates daily Mass, hears confessions, gives marriage counselling, baptizes, witnesses marriages, performs funerals and oh yes, he writes and plays music, sings wonderfully, directs choirs and choreographs and directs concerts. Just a regular kind of guy/priest. RIGHT! But wait, a “regular” priest has its own meaning. Regular priests are referred to as regular, because they follow the regula (latin for rule), the structural life of a religious community or more commonly known as a religious order. So Fr. Art is an order priest of the MSC community. However, for us Fr. Art is far from “regular” in the common sense. He is an extraordinary priest who has generously shared himself and his gifts with us and who will be missed, but fondly remembered by this community of St. Catherine of Alexandria. Hail and Farewell Fr. Art, Faithful

A C AUGUST21,2016

Twenty- irstSundayinOrdinaryTimeMy Brother and His Wife: The Challenge of Unselfish Love

When my brother was first sick of cancer in his left kidney, his wife was with him all throughout his ordeal. Imagine a woman at 28, full of élan vital, singlehandedly taking care of a cancer patient for 6 months 24/7.

A priest friend of mine had a brother who was happily married for 13 years. The couple bore 3 children. Suddenly the husband suffered a stroke at 35. He was bedridden. They were a couple of means, with servants and drivers at their beck and call. She claimed she loved her husband. But she could not bear seeing her beloved in pain. She didn’t want to be tied down to a useless and unproductive invalid husband. She had her own life and dreams to pursue. And so she left him and the children 6 months after her husband’s stroke. How many in fact left their spouses because they could not be in solidarity with their spouses’ weaknesses and sufferings? Because they wanted to keep their sanity and live?

At the end of the last quarter of 2014, my brother was found to have a stage 4 cancer, metastatic renal carcinoma. In the second half of 2015, he was bedridden. This time he and his wife had two children, all boys aged 9 and 10. Again, his wife, now 39 years and blooming, took care of her husband and two children – singlehandedly 24/7. Of course, the relationship went into some difficulties. Certainly harsh words were exchanged. Theirs was a relationship of human beings, subject to frail-ties and contradictions and sin. My brother was the patient one, (pun intended). He was totally dependent on his wife. But his wife was most patient: she never left him, no matter the difficulties she had to undergo, until his death in June 20, 2016.

There were tough times, and my brother’s wife had to cry silently and secretly so as not to burden her husband. But her husband, my brother, knew whenever she cried. I talked to her. I asked her whether she ever thought that at this peak of the first springtime of her life, she would be tied down, caregiving for her husband, from his toilette to his food and simple recrea-tional needs. Life begins at 40. She should have been out there working, shopping and partying with her husband and friends! What a meaningless life to spend with an inutile, useless, impotent, invalid and bedridden husband!

The moment they lived together, she stopped working because my brother was so gallant and patriarchal. My brother took over the shopping, grocery and the cooking, because he had a taste which he wanted her to relish. But with her husband now bedridden, she had to re-learn doing groceries and errands; her husband instructed her on what to cook and how to cook, step by step. He knew the timing, the amount of heat for each recipe. For he was an international cook who never went to a culi-nary school. (And a friend of the court – amicus curiae – of the poor who couldn’t afford lawyers, and won his cases; he made legal depositions and briefs and successfully pleaded his case, even though he never went to law school!).

And then she replied to me: “Manoy Ben, (manoy is a Filipino title of respect to an elder brother), now I know this to be true: real love is unselfish. True, there were many moments that I was tempted to leave Mar. I could have used our children, their studies and their future to justify my leaving. My best friend in Australia was inviting me to work with her there. My family didn’t want me to suffer in this already an intolerable situation. I also have my own future to prepare for. But this is not about me. I have truly loved Mar. I could forget myself. This is about the person I love. This is about Mar and I am willing to sacri-fice everything on his behalf, for his sake. I will never leave him.” She loved and, despite her weaknesses and shortcomings, she remained faithful to her beloved. –Fr. Ben

. . para que el Señor . . . los haga idóneos cooperadores de la verdad. —San José de Calasanz
