Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 24, 2018

John the Baptist

He is a wild desert preacher

dressed only in camel skin and

eating locusts and wild honey,

who inaugurates a widespread

ministry of baptism for the

forgiveness of sin. He takes up

Isaiah’s cry to prepare the way

of the Lord but calls the

multitudes who throng to him (some perhaps out of curiosity) a

“brood of vipers,” warns them of God’s wrath and threatens

hellfire on those who pride themselves on their religious heritage.

He baptizes Jesus amid the attending crowds, yet recognizes that

he is uniquely sent by God, and is most remembered as the

forerunner who prepares for the coming of Jesus. He dies a

martyr’s death.

Only Luke recounts John’s birth, and we join the story at this

birth when neighbors gather around to share Elizabeth’s joy. A

week later, at the circumcision, the family wanted to name the

child Zechariah, after his father, but Elizabeth, who had not heard

the earlier message to Zechariah about the name, assumes the

important role of naming a child and says “No, he will be called

John” (which means “Yahweh has shown favor”). Zechariah

agrees, his speech is restored and all the people are in awe and

ponder in their hearts what happened, asking: “What then will this

child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.”

John will be a prophet (in Isaiah’s words, a “sharp-edged sword”),

will go before the Lord and will be the herald of God’s

compassion for humanity. Like every birth, John’s contains a

vision of the future, and, like every birth, this future can be

marked by suffering and tragedy. John will “complete his

course” (Acts) by being brutally murdered by a scheming ruler

(Herod Antipas). As death nears, John is a model not only of one

who heard God’s word and lived, but of one who dies in great

faith. From his prison cell he dispatches his disciples to ask Jesus

if he really was “he who is to come,” only to receive the answer,

“Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive

their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear,

the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to

them” (Lk. 7:19-22).

As Christians, we are baptized into Christ and “put on Christ.”

Every Christian is “another John,” favored by God, called to

become strong in the spirit, to speak with courage against evil in

the world and, perhaps, even as we complete our course, to

ponder if we really did prepare for the one who is to come.

John R. Donahue, S.J.

Lord...

reach down into the secret places of my heart and heal what's broken and needs to be mended...

Sweep my heart of every trace of dust my sins have left behind...

Scour my heart of its foolishness, polish my soul with your wisdom...

Cleanse my heart of jealousy, humble my proud spirit...

Fill the holes in my heart with your love, your peace and your joy...

Massage the hardness of my heart until it softens under your touch...

Strengthen my heart in its weakness til it beats in time with yours...

Turn my heart around to you, away from all distractions...

Give me a kind and generous heart, wide open to my neighbor...

Come and live in my heart, Lord: make yourself to home within me...

Amen. Father Austin Fleming

A chance to wish

Father Jon and Father Aaron farewell, with our thanks and our blessings.

Sunday, July 8 after the 10:30 Mass in the Lower Lounge

Refreshments will be served.

There WILL BE Coffee & Donuts after the 8:30 Mass, but it will NOT be a “Surprise Sunday.”

“Welcoming” starts with “we”. I believe that each one of us is responsible for welcoming others to the celebration of the Mass. Just like “we” welcome guests into our homes, we welcome others to the Mass. Each one of us can greet someone we know or welcome a stranger or visitor to STA. We can ask then where they are from or what they are studying (if a student). We can look them in the eye and wish them peace. We can invite them to coffee and donuts after 8:30 AM Mass. We can encourage them to have a good week. Imagine the response if you call them by name at Mass the next week – incredible! These simple actions can help build the church community at STA. Each one of us can welcome others to our Mass celebration. Is this out of your comfort zone? That’s OK. Just try it and see the reaction. How does this gesture of welcoming make you feel? Remember that Jesus said “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matthew 25:35). Each one of us can welcome that stranger.

Steve Mahoney

For the next 8 weeks, members of the STA Stewardship Ministry Team will continue to share how they view Catholic Stewardship by spelling the word! Today Steve Mahoney takes on “W”.

Got some time to help with landscape and plants? Want to lend a hand at STA where help is very much needed? A great way to enjoy the outdoors and pause to reflect and pray while getting your hands “dirty”! Contact Jackie, 292-3307, if you can help once OR on a regular basis.

Christians must never be afraid to speak of Jesus. If we fear too much the correctness and the “relevance” of everything we say, we shall either say nothing or speak artificially. As all speak we shall find Jesus together. For Jesus is not answer to a problem or a question. He is an answer to life and the sum total of everything it means to be a Christian and of everyone who is a Christian. Anthony Padovano Who Is Christ?

Unique Retreat Opportunity Have you ever pondered taking an extended retreat but never felt you had the time or resources to take one? A unique opportunity is coming your way for parishioners of Story County. Mary Jo Pfeifer Wulf and Gary Guthrie will facilitate an Ignatian Spiritual Exercises Retreat in Everyday Life starting Tuesday, September 18th and meeting weekly through June 2st 2019 with breaks during Holidays and Spring Break. The group will meet at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. You will also meet privately with your spiritual director during the retreat. The goal of Ignatian spirituality is friendship with God and a will-ingness to go where the Lord sends us in order to participate in building the world God desires. Rather than avoiding the messes of the world, God calls us to enter into them and transform them through love. At their core, the Exercises in their totality are a way of engaging God, of encountering God, as a God of affection and a God of companionship—our friend. If you feel drawn to this experience and/or would like more information, please con-tact Gary at 515-382-3117, [email protected] or Mary Jo Pfeifer Wulf, [email protected].

The parish Finance Council has better defined the purpose of this fund: A capital improvement is any addition or alteration

to the parish’s property that meets both of the following conditions: 1. It substantially adds to the value of the real property or appreciably prolongs the useful life of the real property

2. It is intended to become a permanent installation

The fund is invested with the Archdiocese and any expenditure from the Capital Improvement fund must be approved by the Finance Council (over $5,000 also requires approval of the Pastoral Council). The desired minimum fund balance is $100,000 (presently at $77,000). The parish accepts designated gifts to this fund and supplements the fund with a budgetary donation at the end of each fiscal year.

You can contribute by check in the collection, just indicate “Capital Improvements” on the memo line it is also one of the giving opportunities on our ONLINE GIVING page.
