We await operational guidelines from central office to guide our decisions and ensure we adhere to the State and National Health directives. At this stage it looks very likely that we will be able to resume most school activities that do not involve groups of adults in one location, such as assemblies and performances. Next week we will send home a final update for the term with information about Term Three logistics. Your support during this time is greatly appreciated as people have found innovative ways of staying connected to the school. It looks likely that we may be able to allow parents into the school at drop off and pick up times. This informal communication is really important for building strong home/school partnerships and while we are looking forward to this opportunity, I would hate to see students lose the independence they have developed across this term. We have students as young as four being able to walk to their own classroom, unpack their bags and get ready for their school day. This has also meant that our school day has been able to start promptly as students are able to quickly transition into learning. If you are planning on being at school for drop off and pick up times, please let your child show you how independent they are. Perhaps just plan to do this a couple of days a week, not every drop off and pick up, which will also help us reduce the number of adults on site. SOS Parents and Caregivers are invited to participate in this years School Opinion Survey and have a say about schooling during the COVID-19 lockdown. You are also given the opportunity to provide feedback about our school more generally. It is important that all parents have a voice in providing feedback to ensure we have an accurate representation of parentsperceptions and opinions. I really value the information this survey provides and to ensure the validity of the results, I am aiming for as close to 100% participation as possible. This means that unless you have your say, we will not be able to achieve this. Everyone has an opinion, dont let others do the talking for you. Completing the survey has never been easier to do. The survey form has been designed so that it can easily be completed on a computer or smartphone. The online survey will be available until Friday, 17 July 2020, and should take less than five minutes to complete. To access the survey, please click on the link below or copy and paste it into your web browser: Please contact us if you have any questions about the survey. Lockdown Next week we will have a practice lockdown drill. I know it feels like the last thing that we need to practice, but I would always prefer our students to be over prepared in case there ever was a real emergency. Anyone in the school at that time is expected to participate in the drill and follow the directions of staff members. Our teachers have prepared and practiced this with our students and it is conducted in a calm, supportive way. If you would like to talk to your child about this, please reassure them that most lockdowns are for when a storm or bad weather may be approaching. Week 9 Term 2, 2020 17 June 2020

Principal’s Message Term Three

We are currently working on logistics for Term Three. We await

operational guidelines from central office to guide our decisions

and ensure we adhere to the State and National Health directives.

At this stage it looks very likely that we will be able to resume most

school activities that do not involve groups of adults in one

location, such as assemblies and performances. Next week we will

send home a final update for the term with information about Term

Three logistics. Your support during this time is greatly appreciated

as people have found innovative ways of staying connected to the

school.

It looks likely that we may be able to allow parents into the school

at drop off and pick up times. This informal communication is really

important for building strong home/school partnerships and while

we are looking forward to this opportunity, I would hate to see

students lose the independence they have developed across this

term.

We have students as young as four being able to walk to their own

classroom, unpack their bags and get ready for their school day.

This has also meant that our school day has been able to start

promptly as students are able to quickly transition into learning. If

you are planning on being at school for drop off and pick up times,

please let your child show you how independent they are. Perhaps

just plan to do this a couple of days a week, not every drop off and

pick up, which will also help us reduce the number of adults on

site.

Parents and Caregivers are invited to participate in this year’s

School Opinion Survey and have a say about schooling during the

COVID-19 lockdown. You are also given the opportunity to provide

feedback about our school more generally. It is important that all

parents have a voice in providing feedback to ensure we have an

accurate representation of parents’ perceptions and opinions.

I really value the information this survey provides and to ensure the

validity of the results, I am aiming for as close to 100% participation

as possible. This means that unless you have your say, we will not

be able to achieve this. Everyone has an opinion, don’t let others

do the talking for you. Completing the survey has never been

easier to do. The survey form has been designed so that it can

easily be completed on a computer or smartphone. The online

survey will be available until Friday, 17 July 2020, and should take

less than five minutes to complete.

Next week we will have a practice lockdown drill. I know it feels

2021 Prep Parent Information Video

Every year, all parents of students who will be starting Prep the

following year are invited to attend our annual Prep parent

information evening. This year, our 2021 Prep parent information

evening will be held a little differently. We are currently preparing

an informative video that will highlight the amazing experience that

our Prep students have when they attend Samford State School.

The video will be made available next week (Week 10), date TBA.

What’s On

Meeting Update

We were finally able to hold a meeting in

reasonable proximity to each other!! On

Monday night we discussed a P&C

Facebook page, and decided we would

create our own page for parents to

follow. Watch this space! We also had

some concerned community members come and speak to the P&C

about the proposed subdivisions and zoning changes to Trentham

Place. If you would like more information on this matter, please get

in touch with us and we can point you in the direction of all the

information. This will be a development which has the potential to

impact our school drop off zone, OSHC collection, children’s safety

and the feel of the village in general.

SSSPELL-A-THON Coming Next Week!

Please check your children’s bags next week for information about

our 2020 Spell-a-thon. We have set a fundraising goal of $18,000

(broken down, this is approx. $20 per child) to help relieve the

knock-on effects of Samford Show being cancelled, plus many

other fundraisers throughout the year unlikely to happen. We know

the kids LOVE to raise money for their school, and this empowers

our children to really get involved - learning their spelling words,

asking for pledges, spelling their words right in the testing week – it

means that they are truly responsible for every cent and it ALL

goes back into their school!

They love asking family members and friends to sponsor them so

let’s help them achieve together! We also appreciate that not

everyone will be in a position to contribute… we appreciate any

support you can give. If you are keen on helping mark the Spell-a-

thon results, please email [email protected].

As always, thank you for your support.

During Term 1 and 2, 6C have been working hard on their

homework project - Market Day! All their hard work will come

together on Monday 22 June when they will hold their market.

school to buy some yummy treats or clever creations. Profits

made will be donated to a charity. Items for sale range from 50

SORA and the Premier’s Reading Challenge 2020

Our school is participating once again in the 2020

Queensland Premier's Reading Challenge. Another great source of reading material is through the Premier's

Reading Challenge eBooks collection, which can be found within the SORA app.

The book lists are compiled by teacher librarians and the Reading Centre and feature a range of fiction and

Thank You!

On Monday 15 June, we celebrated School Cleaner’s

Day. Our school cleaners play an extremely vital role in

keeping our schools safe. This year, in particular, it’s

more important than ever to acknowledge and thank our

school cleaners for their efforts in making sure our

schools are protected from the spread of Coronavirus.

Thank you to the special students of Prep E who have

shared their beautiful drawings and kind words of thanks

to our amazing school cleaners!

iPAD Program: Year 4 and 5 Students and Families

Here’s a few quick updates:

All Apple Pencils are now with students. Thank you for your patience. If your child hasn’t received theirs, please email me.

Screen protectors are NOT part of the program. iPads don ’t have them. If you wish to have a screen protector, please purchase and fit one to your child’s iPad. I personally recommend them. We have had a few screen breakages lately.

If iPads are travelling between home and school, a padded travel case is a helpful item.

There’s been a few delays regarding the note for Year 4 families about iPads coming home and enabling the App store on devices. We want to make this note very clear and helpful to families, outlining risks involved. This will help families make an informed choice and consider all factors.

Floor Books

A huge part of our documentation and our program is conducted through floor books. When you pick your

children up from OSHC, the floor book is located at knee level on the right hand side next to the sign in

tablets. The floor book is filled with intentional teaching and meaningful moments observed and

documented by the educators and children from OSHC

.

One great example of this was captured by Bobbie (OSHC Educator).

“This drawing represents different groups

of people walking together in

understanding and love and recognising that we are different but that it’s

important to continually journey towards reconciliation.” Bobbie

As Bobbie journeys with the children, she asked many meaningful

questions and documented the children’s responses. Some questions

yarned over were:

“Why is learning about Aboriginal culture important?” and “Why do you

think harmony is important?” Some of their responses were – ‘because

they are/were the first people here and they looked after the land’ – Lily.

‘Because we need to live together and rely on one another’ – Audrey.

After traveling on this amazing journey together, Bobbie taught the

children Aboriginal symbols to create their own stories in ways that are

meaningful to them
