Strategic Planning: Organizing Questions

● What trends in the field and the world should inform our new strategy?

● What is our point of view on how philanthropy can better advance equity and support our members?

● What outcomes would we want to advance for the sake of equity?

● How do we see our role in the field?

● Who are our members and what role do we have relative to them?

● What approaches could we take to play this role?

● How can we test and develop these approaches?

● What capacities would we need to advance these approaches?

Goals of the Discovery Process

● To surface insights about what role EPIP might serve in the field

● To understand the pains, insights, and needs of EPIP members, as well as

understand the threats and opportunities in the field (PINTOs)

Who We Engaged with (and How) during initial Discovery Phase

● Interviews with current and former board members and staff members, as well as leaders and innovative thinkers identified by EPIP

● Design workshop with Chapter Leaders during the conference

● Gallery walk opportunity for conference attendees to respond to targeted questions and statements about their experiences in philanthropy

● Voting process for conference attendees to elevate the responses that most resonate with them

Facilitators’ Key Findings from Initial Discovery

● EPIP’s greatest asset is its enormously talented and diverse member community; these motivated practitioners bring fresh perspectives, are passionate about urgent change, and have tremendous energy and creativity

● However, structural barriers, lack of diversity at highest levels of leadership, and a culture of elitism within foundations contribute to feelings of isolation, frustration and disillusionment among individual members

● Foundations are failing to retain diverse talent, who leave when they see little room for growth coupled with risk-aversion and practices that undermine or slow progress on issues they care about

15

Potential Directions for EPIP from Initial Discovery

● Cultivate diverse talent by shoring up professional and leadership development resources and offering spaces for members to build relationships and grow leadership

● Serve as a platform for advocacy and influence for changing practices in the field

● Expand EPIP community’s influence by exploring EPIP’s role within the broader ecosystem of affinity groups and others working with philanthropy
