2. Who earned infamy for noting: “A billion dollars just isn’t what it used to be”?

Amelia Earhart is considered the most celebrat-ed female pilot in the history of aviation. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first person to fly solo across the Pacific. She disappeared in 1937 while attempt-ing to circumnaviage the globe, and her fate re-mains a mystery even today.

An explorer and adventurer from Great Britain named Ranulph Fiennes was the first man to visit both the North and South Poles. In addition to leading expeditions in locations across the globe, Fiennes broke many modern endurance records. In fact, Fiennes once competed in seven marathons in seven days. Not only that, but Fiennes did each marathon on a separate continent!

● It was our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, who made the following sage observation: “No matter how much cats fight, there always seem to be plenty of kittens.”

● If you are a stay-at-home mom, you probably won’t be surprised by a recent study that found lower levels of stress in mothers who work outside the home than in those who stay with their kids all day.

● George Reeves is best known for playing the title role in the 1950s TV show “Adventures of Superman.” The role was a risky one, though -- not in front of the camera, but during his nu-merous public appearances. It seems that fans wanted to test the strength of the Man of Steel, so they often kicked and punched him. At a 1953 appearance in Detroit, one boy pulled out his father’s loaded .45 Army Colt and aimed it at Reeves’ chest. By telling the boy that the bullets would bounce off his own chest and ricochet into the crowd, harming oth-ers, Reeves managed to get the boy to put the gun down.

● Though unenforced (and likely unen-forceable), there is a law on the books in Tennessee that bars atheists, preachers and duelists from holding elected office.

● Are you lissotrichous? If you don’t have curls in your hair, you are. Of course, you may not be able to tell if you are atrichous (bald), a condition that may be caused by trichotillomania, the com-pulsion to pull out your own hair.

● If you’ve been married for 40 years or more, you can be pretty confident that the union will last. Only 1 in every 1,000 marriages of such duration end in divorce. *** Thought for the Day: “I have only one superstition. I make sure I touch all the bases when I hit a home run.” -- Babe Ruth (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Ruth pointed toward the outfield bleachersjust before nailing a home run into that exact location. The validity of Ruth’s called shot is a matter of controversy and is still debated by sports purists today.

Mega Maze Solution on Page 10

Q: I’m a big fan of Scott Aukerman, and I especially love his podcast, “Comedy Bang! Bang!” I heard that it is going to become a TV series. Is that true? -- Jonathan V., via e-mail

A: You heard right! Writer/comedian Scott Auke-rman -- who is best known for his work with “Mr. Show with Bob and David” and for co-creating “Be-tween Two Ferns with Zach Galifiana-kis” -- will indeed be bringing his hilari-ous podcast to the small screen. IFC has picked up “Comedy Bang! Bang!” which premieres Friday, June 8, at 10 p.m. To gear up for the show -- which will fea-ture such big-name stars as Zach Galifianakis, Amy Poehler, Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks -- go to ifc.com/fix/2012/05/reggie-watts-makes-music to see Jon Hamm show off his freestyle skills on an im-provised jam about the classic TV show “Taxi.” And check the website often, as new webisodes will air throughout the season.

*** Q: I can barely stand the wait -- when will “Pretty Little Liars” be back? -- Sissy R., via e-mail

A: The third season of the hit ABC Family series “Pretty Little Liars” will be back and raring to go on Tuesday, June 5, at 8 p.m. The series picks up with Aria, Emily, Spencer and Hanna dealing with the fact that Mona is the mysterious “A” who’s been blackmailing them. While the character died in the book series on which the TV series is based, actress Janel Parrish, who plays Mona, has been upgraded to a series regular and will play a bigger role in the upcoming season. However, just because Mona’s been outed as “A,” it doesn’t mean she murdered Al-lison -- that culprit is still on the loose. ***

Q: My family has been waiting anxious-ly for the season-three episodes of the “Down-ton Abbey” series to be aired. Our relatives in

Europe have already seen the latest continuing episodes of the popular British series. Can you tell us when we can expect season-three epi-sodes to start here in the U.S.? -- Tom S., Hartford County, Conn.

A: Your European relatives might be con-fusing season two with season three, as season three is still in production. While Europe will get to see the third season before us -- it’s scheduled to air on ITV in England in September, and here in America on PBS in January 2013 -- I can guarantee you that, as of now, they haven’t seen any more than you have. ***

Q: In my opinion, the fourth season of “Southland” was the best yet. Please tell me it’s been renewed for another season! -- Matt F., Sacramento, Calif.

A: It would seem that the powers that be at TNT agree with your assessment of “Southland,” as they have renewed the hit cop series for a 10-episode fifth season, which is scheduled to begin airing in February 2013. As the date gets closer, I’ll be sure to fill my readers in on all the details.

Big Scammer Nabbed Two years ago, New Mexico’s attorney gen-eral slammed shut a charity that was set up to help veterans. The reason given at the time was that some of the officers in the U.S. Navy Veterans Association had fictitious addresses in the paperwork. Added to that was the fact that the charity was spending bare-ly 1 percent of the money it raised on veterans. That was the first indication that something wasn’t right, and more details quickly surfaced. The 80-odd people who were supposedly on the board of directors couldn’t be found, and the “headquarters” was a mail drop. Only “Bobby Thompson” could be located, but wasn’t talking. With the NVA shut down and nine states and two government agencies after him, Thompson went on the run. Thompson (aka Ronnie Brittain, which was also a false identity), alleged director of the organi-zation, was wanted for money laundering, corruption and identity theft. Fast-forward two years: Thompson, or who-ever he really is, has been caught. In a bar. In Or-egon. His pockets were stuffed with multiple false identification documents. The U.S. Marshals have him in hand. He’s accused of conning well-meaning folks out of $100 million over eight years. Let me repeat that amount: One Hundred. Million. Dollars. Think what that money could have bought, how many veterans could have been helped had the money been used for legitimate purposes. If there is that much money being donated to vet-erans causes, if there are that many people open-ing their wallets, that’s fantastic, but let’s get it right. Know where that money is really going, and how it’s going to be used. If you want to donate money, check out the organization first. The Best Online Budgeting Tool Ever -- and It’s FREE! Years ago, a reader introduced me to bud-geting software called Mvelopes. Honestly, when I read her email I was pretty sure she made a typo. Mvelopes? How would I pronounce that? But she was right, and I learned quickly: EM-vel-opes. Being such a fan of the envelope method of managing money, I was intrigued by anyone who could take my archaic method of divvying up cash into paper envelopes marked with spending cat-egories like “groceries” and “gas,” and turn it into computer software. That’s exactly what Mvelopes accomplished, and I was impressed. Immediately, I was onboard and began recommending Mvelopes to anyone who would

listen. I don’t recall the exact cost at the time, but I remember thinking it was quite reasonable. I loved it because it allowed me to keep the simplicity of envelope budgeting while using my computer to keep track of everything. As downloadable soft-ware went at the time, it was quite cool. Over the years, Mvelopes has grown and developed into the most effective online personal finance and spending management system out there, bar none. News flash! I am excited to tell you that Debt-Proof Living and Mvelopes have recently teamed up to offer DPL/Mvelopes Online Envelope Budgeting to all Everyday Cheapskate readers for free. This is not a free trial. It is a basic DPL/Mvel-opes online account that lets you set up electronic envelopes, fund them just as you would paper en-velopes and then keep track of where your money goes. Here’s how it works: DPL/Mvelopes pulls all of your financial accounts into one place. You create your budget, track your spending and take control of your money. With DPL/Mvelopes, you instantly understand the impact of every spending decision and you always know exactly how much you have left to spend in each of your electronic envelopes. Once you have your account set up so that your financial information is in one place, you will have access to your DPL/Mvelopes account from

any computer or via mobile apps, which are also free. To get started, go online to www.mvelopes.com/DebtProofLiving. Follow the prompts to open your new, fully secure DPL/Mvelopes account. The wizard will walk you through adding your bank and credit-card accounts to your DPL/Mvelopes, and assist you in creating your own uniquelylabeled envelopes. Additionally, once your account is active, you can take advantage of a one-on-one “Jump-start” coaching session via phone with a live coach who will help you unlock the potential in DPL/Mve-lopes and accelerate your success with the enve-lope budgeting system. I suggest that you take full advantage of this opportunity. If you’re at all like me, you’re thinking about friends and family members who might also like to know that DPL/Mvelopes is now available for free. Feel free to share this offer with them. I can’t wait to hear from you to learn how this excellent money-management tool helps you in your journey to financial freedom.

Curb Your Frustration Frustration is foe to both human and dog. Frustrated people make frustrated dogs; frustrated dogs make frustrated people. Frustrated people and dogs make mistakes out of frustration. He shouldn’t do it. He doesn’t listen. He won’t come to me. He should know better. All said in that pinched, exasperated, teeter-ing-on-the-edge tone. Have you trained him? I ask. I always ask. And the answer is always no. Then how would he know better from worse? How would he know what you want? How would he know what he’s hearing? How would he know? Do I sound frustrated? It may surprise some to know that chewing, jumping, howling, barking, nipping, running and chasing are things dogs should do. These are normal and natural canine behaviors. Training teaches a dog to behave the way you, a human, want him to behave -- which is typi-cally a deviation from natural animal behavior. Dogs jump to catch balls, to chase butter-flies, to intimidate squirrels, to play with other dogs. Teaching your dog not to jump on you is the begin-ning of showing him that it is not OK to jump on hu-mans in general. You are teaching him an exception to his normal dog behavior -- and he can learn this, from you, if you teach him. Dogs chew because it feels good and satis-fies a natural urge. You can’t take away the urge, but you can teach him that it is OK to chew on a Nyla-bone or a chew toy, and it’s not OK to chew on the leg of a chair. There is a difference. But you must teach him. Dogs bark to communicate. It’s as natural as breathing. If you don’t want your dog to bark, ever, you shouldn’t have a dog. But it is reasonable and necessary to set limits on your dog’s barking. If he is trained to stop at “enough,” he will stop at “enough.” But you must teach him. Puppies nip. Dogs howl. And anyone who loves dogs derives an almost giddy satisfaction from watching them run and chase and play and come to a screeching halt to collapse in the comforting shade of a tree. There is simply nothing better. At the heart of dog training is compromise. You want there to be joy in the activities you do to-

gether. When you are walking together, you should be walking together. You don’t want to be dragged down the street, and your dog doesn’t want to be yanked and jerked into submission. Teaching “heel” is the compromise. When walking in “heel,” you walk together. Otherwise, your dog gets to be a dog. He gets to sniff and explore and run and chase and thrill you to tears simply by being himself: a dog, a great dog. Woof!

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9)

lifelonghealth

Dr. David Lipschitz

Outcome-Based Payments Have Cost-Saving Potential A New York Times article also published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette discussed a slowdown in the growth of health spending. Before 2009, health care spending invariably rose at 3 or 4 times the rate of inflation. But in 2009 and 2010, costs increased by only 4 percent and remained flat at 18 percent of our gross domestic product. Experts suggest that the major reasons for the decline are the recent recession, job losses and fewer Americans with health insurance. With fewer Americans having access to health care, doctor vis-its declined, fewer tests were done and the number of people seeking care for minor problems in emer-gency rooms decreased. Because many Americans are worried about job security, fewer are willing to take time off for elective surgical procedures. Insurance plans with lower premiums -- but higher deductibles and co-pays -- have led consumers to think twice before seeing a physician or agreeing to expensive care. In the past few years, the number of workers with high-deductible insurance has increased from 3 percent in 2006 to 13 percent in 2011. But it is encouraging to note that the slow-down in the rate of health care inflation cannot be ex-plained solely by more uninsured Americans having less access to care. There is compelling evidence that health care providers are being much more pru-dent in ordering tests, performing procedures and/or prescribing the most expensive medications. And simultaneously, health care consumers appear to be taking a more active role in their health care and are beginning to discuss costs, rationale and the necessity of treatment plans recommended by their physicians. As the Affordable Care Act becomes a real-ity, Medicare and Medicaid, as well as private insur-ance plans, are shifting payment to what is referred to as “accountable care” where physicians are paid for quality rather than the quantity of care delivered. This approach will alter the way medicine is practiced and is designed to not only save money but to also improve the quality of care by focusing on prevention, better coordination of care, avoiding unnecessary care and doing everything possible to keep patients as healthy as possible and away from emergency rooms and hospitals. Throughout the nation, partnerships among government and private insurers, primary-care phy-sicians, specialists and hospitals are being forged into “accountable-care organizations.” In the past, our health care system rewarded high-technology acute care at the expense of managing and pre-venting chronic diseases. In a true paradigm shift, more attention now will be paid to coordinating the care of patients with multiple chronic diseases, assuring compliance with medication, careful and appropriate monitoring of the response to treatment, and preventing compli-cations and aggravation of illnesses. The goal is maintaining health and avoiding the need for hospitalizations. This care will involve close partnerships among physicians, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians, and rehabilitation experts. These teams will have incentives to practice the right care and reduce costs while being monitored to assure that the quality of care benefits the overall health of their patients. Quality will be measured by how appropri-ately patients are managed, the frequency of com-plications, the number of visits to the emergency room, and admissions to the hospital. In the future, our goal must be for every American to have access to inexpensive and ratio-

nal health care. Whatever the Supreme Court de-cides about the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, the writing is on the wall for everyone in-volved in health care. The end is in sight for those who believe that the fancier the test, the more ex-pensive the drug and the newer the technology, the better the health care facility. Those institutions that continue to tout the newest and best equipment and the best possible resources for every acute-care problem are looking backward and not paying to attention to our critical future needs. We must prevent disease, identify se-rious illnesses early, treat them cheaply and effec-tively, refer to specialists and perform high-technol-ogy tests only when they are truly needed, and do everything we can to avoid admissions to the hospi-tal. As America grows older, this approach will be the only way in which we, as a nation, will be able to cope. And because retiring baby boomers are rapidly expanding the Medicare population, hos-pitals and specialists will have plenty of business, even if the number of tests and procedures done on individual patients is drastically curtailed.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

Medicare Enrollment Regular readers of this column know that I don’t like to get into Medicare issues. I retired in 2005 following a 32 year career with the Social Secu-rity Administration. And despite what many people think, Medi-care is not run by SSA. It is managed by a federal agency called the Centers for Medicare and Medic-aid Services. But the problem is that CMMS does not have any field offices. On the other hand, SSA has a network of about 1,200 branch offices in big cit-ies and small towns across America. So CMMS con-tracts with SSA to help people enroll in the Medicare program. That means that as a general rule, SSA em-ployees (and frumpy old SSA retirees like me) know a few things about Medicare enrollment issues. But after we get you signed up for Medicare, we wash our hands of you and let private industry take over. CMMS works with insurance companies around the country to actually run the Medicare program. And good luck with that! So I bill myself as a Social Security expert, but not much of a Medicare expert. However, when I get questions about Medicare enrollment, I am usu-ally able to answer them. Here are a couple of ex-amples:

Q: I have been getting Social Security since age 62. I will be 65 in October. When and how should I sign up for Medicare?

A: You won’t have to do anything but watch your mailbox! They used to make everyone apply for Medicare in person a few months before turning 65. But government officials realized that about 98 percent of seniors already getting Social Security benefits applied for Medicare upon reach-ing their 65th birthday. It dawned on them that they

might as well automatically enroll all current Social Security beneficiaries in Medicare at age 65 -- and let the two percent who don’t want Medicare take some action to decline it. So, about three months before your 65th birthday, you will get a “Medicare Enrollment Pack-age” in the mail. Assuming you want both parts to Medicare (I’ll explain that in a minute), you simply sign the Medicare card that comes with the package and file it away with your other important household papers. That’s it. You don’t do anything else. You’ll be an official beneficiary of Medicare effective with October 1, 2012. There are two main parts to Medicare. Part A, or hospital insurance, is free. Actually, you paid for it throughout your working life with the Medi-care taxes that were deducted from your paychecks. The other half of traditional Medicare, called Part B or doctors/medical insurance, isn’t free. You pay a monthly premium (about $115 for most people) that is deducted from your Social Security check. Since you pay for this insurance, you have the option of declining it. But because of the way the insurance industry is structured in this country, almost every-one must take Part B. About the only people who don’t need it are those who are still working and are covered by an employer’s insurance plan. (See the next question.) If you don’t want Part B, you sign the back of the Medicare card that comes in the enrollment package indicating you are declining Part B. You mail that card back to the government and they send you another card that says you have Part A coverage only.

Q: I will be 65 in September. I am still working and covered by my employer’s insur-ance. I plan to continue working as long as I am healthy. I understand I don’t need to apply for Medicare at 65, is this right?

A: No, it’s wrong. You need to sign up for partial Medicare coverage. And because you are not yet getting Social Security benefits, there is no auto-matic enrollment for Medicare as discussed in the answer to the first question. So the ball is in your court. You should apply for Medicare’s Part A cov-erage a couple months before your 65th birthday. As explained in the prior answer, Part A is free. So even though you will probably be fully covered by your

employer’s insurance and won’t need Part A until you retire, you might as well apply for it now. Also, you might learn that your employer’s insurance wants you to take Part A to supplement their cover-age. However, because you’re working and cov-ered by your employer’s insurance, the law says their coverage is primary, so you can save $115 per month by not signing up for Medicare’s Part B. Once you retire or otherwise lose your em-ployer’s full coverage, then you must apply for Part B. And when you do so, you won’t pay any delayed enrollment penalties that normally apply to folks who don’t take Part B at age 65 but later decide they want it.

I looked in a mirror. I do have a crease. Does it mean I have heart disease? -- J.K.

ANSWER: Right in the area where an ear-ring is worn, some people have a transverse crease. At one time a fuss was made about it being a sign of heart disease. If it is, it’s not a reliable sign. I have those creases too. ***

Lack of Fiber Blamed for Diverticulosis DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 55-year-old man who finally bit the bullet and had a colonoscopy. My doctor had badgered me to have one for the past five years. I don’t have cancer. I don’t have polyps. I do have divertic-ulosis. I didn’t know I had it before the scope exam. I’ve never had even a twinge of pain. What is this, and what do I need to do about it? -- H.L.

ANSWER: A diverticulum is a small, bal-loonlike protrusion of the colon lining through the muscle wall of the colon and onto its outer surface. By “small,” I mean that diverticula range from 0.2 inches to 0.4 inches (0.5 cm to 1 cm) in largest diam-eter, around the size of a pea. Their cause appears to be a lack of fiber in the diet. In places where the diet has lots of fiber, di-verticulosis is rare. In North America, it’s rampant. Fiber keeps undigested food from drying out. Dried food residue requires powerful contractions of the colon muscle to push it along. Those contractions also push the colon lining through the colon wall, creating a diverticulum. Diverticulosis is frequently a silent affair, not causing any troubles. Diverticulitis, on the other hand, is an inflammation and infection of diverticula. That is quite painful. It produces abdominal pain on the left, lower side of the abdomen, often with nau-sea and vomiting. The diverticula also can burst and release bacteria into the abdominal cavity, a serious situation. Severe diverticulitis must be treated in the hospital with IV fluids and IV antibiotics. To prevent diverticulosis from becoming di-verticulitis, increase your fiber intake. Fiber is the indigestible coverings of many fruits, vegetables and grains. White flour is refined wheat -- wheat without its outer coat, the bran. Bran and other sources of fiber draw water into undigested food and make it easily pushed along the entire length of the colon. We’re supposed to get 25 to 35 grams of fi-ber a day. Beans, whole-grain cereals, whole-grain breads, dates, prunes, unskinned apples and pears are examples of fiber-rich foods. If you cannot get enough fiber from foods, then commercial products such as Fiberall, Metamucil, Citrucel and FiberCon can provide it for you. The booklet on diverticulosis provides more details on this common condition and its complica-tion -- diverticulitis. To order a copy, write: Dr. Dono-hue -- No. 502W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for

Home Health Care Choices Made Easier It’s not easy making medical decisions when we have no previous experience, but Medi-care has just made it easier to make decisions about home health care. The “Home Health Care CAHPS Survey” results have been posted online as part of the Quality Care Finder. The QCF already lets us com-pare hospitals, nursing homes, dialysis facilities, physicians and Medicare plans -- and now we can do the same with home health care. For example, hospitals are compared for rates of readmission and deaths, and whether the hospitals use recommended treatments for serious conditions such as pneumonia and heart attack. Nursing homes can get up to a five-star rating, depending on the quality of the care. The information looks at pain control, whether patients are given flu shots, special services, and health and safety inspections. Dialysis treatment centers are compared in areas such as whether anemia was controlled, whether home dialysis is offered and what services are provided. The physicians portion of the database lets us get to know a doctor before we make an ap-pointment. Does he or she have a medical specialty or clinical training? One benefit is learning whether a doctor accepts Medicare payments as the full amount. The Medicare plan finders allows us to search for the plan that covers the drugs we need, and compares plans based on quality ratings and costs. Home health care, the newest addition to the database, looks at services provided, such as skilled nursing, physical care and speech therapy. The agencies are compared in how they manage pain and treat wounds. Patient experiences are part of the information. To access the Quality Care Finder, go on-line to www.medicare.gov/quality-care-finder or contact Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.

Dear Doug

Creators News Syndicate

Wiggle Room When You Spend! Q: My mother is 67 and has been wid-owed for two years. I think she is every sales-man’s dream. When my father was alive, he managed the maintenance and caretaking of their home and basically decided how they spent their money. He was thrifty and always managed to get the lowest price on everything. Now mom gets frustrated handling things by herself. She feels she pays too much for goods and services since she usually accepts the first quote. She wants my help, but I don’t live lo-cally. She doesn’t have much cash and is likely being taken advantage of. How can I help her?

A: Homes need regular maintenance and repair, and it’s a challenge to find an honest and re-liable workman who knows how to keep things run-ning smoothly. Tell her that it’s always wise to get two or more price quotes for home chores. There are plenty of qualified handyman services available, so she should call around to get the best service for the best price. However, the lowest price is not always the best choice and the quality of work and the time re-quired to get things done are factors that need to be considered. Suggest that she check with friends and neighbors who may have recommendations for some-one they’ve had good experience with and they feel is trustworthy. Perhaps you can help her find an apartment management or housing management company who will give you referrals. Remind her that all of us be-come smarter after we’ve had some experience!

Q: When my sisters and I visit with our grandparents, we learn a lot about their child-hood as they share their memories of growing up, and how ideal and happy those times were. For example, they kept their doors unlocked, knew all their neighbors and could count on them in an emergency. It’s a bit depressing when they tell us we won’t have the same positive life experiences they had. They may be correct, but we live in the here and now and just have to deal with the way things are. How can we discourage them from sharing these negative views?

A: It is only natural for older folks to com-pare the “then” with the “now,” so you’ll have to be patient with them. For one thing, elders experienced changes much slower then because the pace itself

was slower and information also took a lot more time to become public. Today, we are bombarded with up-to-the-minute news reports of terrorist activities, fi-nancial disasters, threats of war, dishonest politicians, crime and myriad other negative events. Your grandparents come from a world much different from the one you know today, and they are bound to comment on the differences. Elders are ap-palled at negative news that younger folks simply ac-cept as normal. And, sadly, the media thrives on the sensational, negative news to gain attention! Grandparents want to be a part of your lives. Explain to them you want to focus on a positive fu-ture and you would like their advice on how they handled their lives in tough times when things went wrong. Depressed grandparents are often in denial that things were as great as they actually say they were. Steering them in a positive direction will open up communication and bring your family closer.

● On May 31, 1859, the massive clock-tower bell known as Big Ben, located at the top of the 320-foot-high St. Stephen’s Tower, rings out over the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the first time. Just two months later, however, the heavy clapper cracked the bell.

● On May 30, 1911, the inaugural India-napolis 500 is run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. With the exception of a break in 1917 and 1918 for World War I and from 1942 to 1945 for World War II, the 200-lap, 2 1/2-mile race has been run every year.

● On June 1, 1926, Norma Jeane Morten-son Baker-- who will become known as the glamorous actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe -- is born in Los Angeles. During World War II, a photographer “discovered” the naturally photogenic Norma Jeane while she was working in a California munitions factory.

● On June 3, 1956, Santa Cruz, Calif., authorities announced a total ban on rock and roll music at public gatherings. Just two weeks later, Time magazine reported on sim-ilar bans enacted in Asbury Park, N.J., and San Antonio, Texas.

● On June 2, 1967, Capt. Howard Levy, 30, a dermatologist from Brooklyn, is convicted by a general court-martial of willfully disobey-ing orders. Levy had refused to provide ba-sic instruction in skin disease to Green Beret medics, saying it would be used as a “tool of political persuasion” in Vietnam. He did 26 months hard labor and was dismissed from the service.

● On May 28, 1987, Matthias Rust, a 19-year-old amateur pilot from West Ger-many, takes off from Helsinki, Finland, and travels undetected through more than 400 miles of Soviet airspace. Top 5 Sports Apps for iPhone, iPad With something like 10,000 apps out there, I hope you can forgive us for missing one of your favorites, please. Our top five at A Sporting View headquarters:

5. Sports Illustrated It’s free to download, but they do charge you for full editions of the magazine. Still, when you’re tired of reading the blogs and their repetitive, snarky, Jim Rome-wannabe styling, you’ll see the difference in quality right away.

4. Madden 2012 I think it costs something like $49.99 to buy a copy of Madden football for your console, but I could be wrong. For one thing, nobody calls their consoles “consoles” anymore, and with inflation, I’m sure it costs more. But in iPad world, Madden costs something like $9.99 -- and yeah ... people still complain. For the older, non-gamer fan, it’s a nice challenge. No joystick is needed because you can just point and shoot with the iPad. Tap the screen ... touchdown!

3. ESPN Scorecenter XL It’s not that it’s great, but you have to have ESPN on here somewhere, don’t you? The app is free, it ties into their fantasy leagues, and it gives you the scores.

2. Watch ESPN The name kind of says it all. Watch ESPN on your iPad. (Carrier rates may apply ... better stick to the WiFi.)

1. MLB At Bat 2012 This is the best sports app in the world, and it keeps getting better. It’s one of the handfuls of re-ally incredible things Major League Baseball has of-fered up to fans, and with every passing year MLB seems to get it more and more. This app has been on the market since 2010, I think, but it doesn’t mat-ter because it’s grown by leaps and bounds ever since. For 14 semoleons -- about the price of one hot dog and a beer at a baseball game -- you get to hear every radio broadcast of every game from both team’s markets (your choice), and when there’s a highlight, it’s streamed to you in video. You also get a game highlight reel after every game and pretty good (not excellent, sorry) sports reporting after ev-ery game. There’s even a free MLB TV game of the day. But where the app really excels? The clas-sic pitcher versus batter duel. The app is so strong it can tell you how fast the pitch was when it left the pitcher’s hand and how far it dipped from the mound to the plate in inches. All of the other statisti-cal things you want or need are in the app, too. This is the gold standard. If you’re a baseball lover and you don’t buy this app, you’re not only a fool, but you’re not a baseball lover.

Mickey Mouse Collectors Pie Eyed Over Doll Q: This is a photo of a Mickey Mouse doll that stands about 12 inches tall. It was found in my mother-in-law’s attic in 1988. Not one of her kids ever remember seeing it and we know nothing about its history. The doll is made of cloth with red wood shoes; the ears are black felt; and it has four fingers. The eyes are missing, and one shoe has a hole in the bottom of the sole. Anything you can tell us will be appreci-ated.

A: Your Mickey Mouse doll was made around 1930 by Knickerbocker Toy Co. in New York. The shoes are composition, and it originally had Mickey Mouse pie eyes. The eyes were made of oil-cloth and had a pie-shaped cut out section, thus the term pie eyes. Your Mickey Mouse doll would probably fetch $700 to $1,500 in an antiques shop.

Q: I have three “Cries of London” por-celain plates. They are 8 inches in diameter and decorated with very colorful scenes. The plates all have titles that include “Sweet China Oranges,” “Milk Below Maids,” and “Strawber-rys, Scarlet Strawberrys.” On the back of each plate are the words “Tuscan -- Fine Bone China -- Made in England.” I have had these plates for years, and they are all in excellent condition. Anything you can tell me about my plates

will be greatly appreciated.

A: The “Cries of London” scenes were based on original paintings by English artist Francis Wheatley. He painted scenes of people selling their wares in London streets around 1792. Each scene had a specific title. Your Tuscan fine china plates were made Staffordshire, England, around 1947. Each plate would probably be worth $20 to $25.

Q: This is a photo of the box that con-tains an antique amber glass party ware set for 20. The set includes tumblers and old-fash-ioned glasses all with square bases and serv-ing dishes. Before I donate it or sell it at a garage sale, I would like to know the value of my set.

A: Your set of amber glassware falls in the category of collectibles rather than antiques. “Van-ity” is the name of the pattern, and your set was made by Colony Glassware around 1968. It was also made in clear glass and is often referred to as bar-ware. Similar sets are selling in the range of $20 to $25.

Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. The Smasher and the Simply Smashing

Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.

As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.

For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.

Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.

And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations

during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.

But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.

Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.

While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”

Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

Square Up Your Finish with Better Balance

Many golfers out there have a difficult time finishing theirswings in balance. It is tough for them to “strike a pose” andhold their finish. This is often a result a poor balance. As discussed in previous articles, the key to making better swings is understanding how the body is designed on a gridand in eight sockets; two shoulder, hips, knees and ankles.Keeping these sockets stacked in relation to each other is what keeps the body in balance and when the body is inbalance it makes it easier to keep the rotation of the swingmoving through to a balanced finish. Notice in the photo how I am in perfect balance as I am holding my finish; my shoulders are balanced on top of myhips, which are balanced on top of my knees and on top of my feet. I also have both shoulders level to each other as well as the hips and knees. As you can see on the screen inthe distance, my body is basically on a grid that shows me what perfect balance feels like. Many times higher handicappers struggle into a balancedfinish because their shoulders have rotated off their hips in the forward swing or they have swiveled their knees out fromunder their hips. As soon as the body feels this loss of balance it will stop the rotation and the arms and hands willneed to flip the club through impact resulting in a mishit. Teaching with Motion Analysis Technology, as seen in the photo with the sensors on my body and image on the screenin the background, gives me the exact data to measure myangles in my swing. I can see on the monitor where perfectbalance is as I hold my finish, therefore train my body to repeat perfect balance on a more consistent basis. Thisexact data gives me and the student greater clarity andprecision in making the necessary adjustments to create a faster more effective result. If you would like to experienceMotion Analysis Technology to improve your swing, give me a call.

Square up your finish withbetter balance Many golfers have a difficult time finishing their swings in balance. It’s hard for them to “strike a pose” and hold their finish. This is often a result of poor body balance throughout their swing. The key to finding the problems causing im-balance is to study the four pairs of sockets that function in the process of the swing: the shoulders, hips, knees and ankles. Keeping these sockets in the properly “stacked” relationship to each other results in a naturally smooth swing and a balanced finish. Notice in the photo how I am in perfect balance as I hold my finish: Shoulders are aligned above the hips, the hips above the knees, and the knees above the feet. Notice, too, that all of these socket points are level. The projected image on the screen grid enables me to as-sociate the sensations I feel in a balanced swing with what I can see my body doing. When many high handicap-pers swing, they allow their shoulders to rotate off their hips, or the knees to move away from under the hips. When the body senses this loss of balance in the natural rotation of the swing it often results in a mishit ball. The use of Motion Analysis Technology (MAT), as shown in the photo, uses sensors to show the exact angles of these key body points in the swing motion. This visual method is highly useful in allow-ing both student and instructor to quickly see where adjustments need to be made. I have found MAT to be one of my most effective teaching methods.
