TRIVIA NEWSFRONT

(Answers on page 16)

Page 2 Tidbits of Coachella Valley Vol. IX Issue 32

Born in central Russia in 1937, Valentina Tereshk-ova,grew up to become not only the first woman to have flown in space, but also the first civilian to have that honor. • When the Russian space program announced

they were taking applications for the first female cosmonaut, there were over 400 applicants. The list of qualifications stipulated that applicants must be under 5 ft 7 in tall, must weigh less than 154 lbs, and must be expert skydivers. Valentina, a textile factory assembly worker, met all of the qualifications.

• Of the 400 applicants, five finalists were chosen. All five women then commenced a grueling months-long training program which included weightless flights, isolation tests, centrifuge tests, rocket theory, spacecraft engineering, 120 parachute jumps, and pilot training in jet fighters. After examinations in November of 1962, four were chosen to continue the training. Within a few months, Valentina was picked to be the first woman in space, being the solo pilot of Vostok 6. Nikita Khrushchev confirmed the appointment.

• On June 14, 1965, Vostok 5 was launched with a male cosmonaut piloting. Two days later, Valentina prepared to follow him into orbit aboard the Vostok 6. They would orbit the planet simultaneously. On the morning of June 16, she was dressed in her flight suit and taken to the launch pad. She went through the communication and life support checks, and then was sealed inside the craft. Following a two-hour countdown, the Vostok 6 launched flawlessly, and Valentina became the first woman in space. Her call sign was ‘Chaika’ meaning ‘Seagull.’

• She was 26 years old at the time, which was ten years younger than Gordon Cooper, the youngest Mercury 7 astronaut. Prior to this, only military personnel had been launched by any country.

• She spent 71 hours in space, orbiting the planet 48 times at a maximum distance from Earth of 143 miles (231 km). With a single flight, she logged more flight time than the combined times of all American astronauts who had flown prior to that date.

• Her craft, the Vostok 6, came within 3 miles (5 km) of the Vostok 5, and they communicated by radio. When the two craft re-entered, they landed within three hours of each other.

• Because the craft was not equipped to land after re-entry, Valentina had to bail out with her parachute at just the right moment. Buffeted (Trivia Test answers page 16)

WARNING: Reading Tidbits is habit forming

by strong winds, she nearly missed the landing site and almost landed in a lake. Once on the ground, the wind caught her parachute and dragged her a short distance before she was able to disconnect herself. She received a badly bruised nose but was otherwise unhurt, although she reported suffering from nausea (which she claimed was because of the poor food).

• A f t e r r e t u r n i n g h o m e , she was acclaimed as a national hero and she kept up a schedule of publicity photo shoots, official appearances, and keeping a medical record of any changes in her body.

• Tereschkova went on to become a cosmonaut engineer and has spent much of her life in key political positions. She married fellow cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev, who was the only bachelor astronaut to go into space. Their wedding was presided over by Khrushchev.

• In 1964 she gave birth to a daughter, who became the only person to have two parents who had both been in space. She carried the Olympic torch for the summer games in 2008.

• Even though there were plans for further flights by females, it took 19 years until the second Soviet woman was launched into space.

• Valentina continues to be active in politics and is still revered as a heroine in post-Soviet Russia.

• In 2013 she offered to go on a one-way trip to Mars, should such an opportunity occur.

have been a small step for Neil Armstrong, but it’s a long one for me!” Conrad was only 5 foot 6 inches tall.

• When Alan Bean walked on the moon, he tried to fix a TV camera that was not working by hitting it with a hammer. He failed.

DANGER ZONE• A study done on a Spacelab mission showed

that some microorganisms reproduce better in the weightlessness of space. This fact, coupled with the fact that human immune systems don’t function as well in space, could spell trouble for future long-term astronauts. It is feared that unless great precautions are taken, certain bacteria may be able to invade a spacecraft and present grave danger to its inhabitants.

FAST FACTS• Michael Collins walked in space twice during

the Gemini 10 mission in 1966. When he returned, he filled out his travel voucher by listing: $8 a day for 3 days. He was reimbursed $24. He said later that he should have charged 7¢ a mile equaling $80,000, but acknowledged that one of the Mercury astronauts had already tried it, and had received in return a bill from NASA for a several million dollars for the non-reusable rocket.

• When Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin returned from the moon, they dutifully declared their lunar rocks and dust on a standard customs form.

FAR-OUT FACTS• Researchers at the University of Chicago found

multitudes of dust-sized diamond particles embedded in meteorites that they reason may predate the sun and the Earth. These diamonds may have been formed in the atmosphere of an exploding star and then spewed across space. This suggests that the universe may be full of these minuscule diamonds.

• Scientists at the University of Hawaii have found two asteroids which they believe are composed almost entirely of metal. According to their spectrograph measurements (light that is reflected off the objects to reveal their content) the asteroids are almost pure iron and nickel. These two objects come relatively close to Earth’s orbit. It is thought that since they are both more than two miles wide, their worth (at today’s market value), could top several trillion

• The first reusable space shuttle was named “Enterprise” in honor of the success of the “Star Trek” series.

ASTRONAUT ANECDOTES• Astronaut John Young was with Gus Grissom

on the first manned space flight in 1965. Young smuggled a sandwich on board the capsule to supplement the boring fare offered by NASA. However, the crumbs from the sandwich floated weightlessly through the cabin and threatened to ruin some of the equipment on board. Young was reprimanded by officials for endangering the success of the mission by his unauthorized snack.

• The first meal eaten on the moon, consumed by Armstrong and Aldrin, consisted of four bacon squares, three sugar cookies, peaches, pineapple-grapefruit drink, and coffee.

A crater on the moon is officially called “O.S.,” so named by the crew of Apollo 15. Located very near their landing site and being 1,200 feet deep, they named it for the exclamation they would make if their spacecraft missed the mark and landed there instead: “Oh, S**t!”

1. Does the moon ever have seismic “earth” quakes?

2. How large is the typical shooting star?

It was stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce who made the following sage observation: “All my humor is based on destruction and despair. If the whole world were tranquil, without disease and violence, I’d be stand-ing in the breadline.”

You might be surprised to learn that a fla-mingo cannot eat unless its head is upside-down.

While in the Capitol rotunda attending the funeral for Congressman Warren B. Davis in January 1835, President Andrew Jackson was the victim of an assassination attempt. Richard Lawrence, a 35-year-old house painter, pointed two revolvers at the president and fired. In an incredible stroke of luck, both weapons misfired, at which point President Jackson began to beat the man with his cane.

The Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea; it’s a lake.

It’s been reported that Paul Simon found the inspiration for his hit song “Mother and Child Reunion” in a chicken-and-egg dish he was eating in a Chinese restaurant.

More than 60 percent of the 50 most common words in the English language con-tain three or fewer letters.

Natives of Finland drink more coffee per capita than citizens of any other country in the world.

The Hula Hoop fad swept the globe in the 1950s, but the toy did not find a warm wel-come everywhere. In Indonesia, Hula Hoops were banned because they “might stimulate passion.” China’s official news agency called it “a nauseating craze,” and the Soviets de-clared the toy to be “a symbol of the empti-ness of American culture” (despite the fact that the Hula Hoop originated in Australia).

Adult tuna have been known to swim up to 100 miles in a single day. *** Thought for the Day: “I don’t know any-thing about music. In my line, you don’t have to.” -- Elvis Presley

FIGHT FRAUD! (continued): • The 419 Fraud originated in Nigeria, but is

now practiced in many countries around the world. You’ll receive a pleading email from some stranger explaining that he has many millions of dollars that he needs to safely transfer out of his country. (Usually, some volatile political regime is making this process difficult for him.) He will ask for your help – and your bank account number – and will promise you a percentage of his mil-lions for your time and trouble.

No matter how touching the story or how desperate the sender seems to be, run – don’t walk – from emails of this sort. (That’s what the “Delete” key is for!) Don’t even bother clicking “reply” to send a nasty retort, as this will only verify your email address and leave you open for further solicitations.

• Poetry scammers prey on those of us who have always believed we had a creative streak, but never had an outlet for it. The scam can be in the form of a poetry contest promoted via an Internet promo, an email, or even an ad in a print magazine. No entry fee is required; they just invite you to submit your best verse for consideration.

• The scam here is that anyone who enters “wins.” Then the winners are notified that in order to view their winning entry, they must purchase – at an inflated price – an anthology book that features the work of all the win-ners. Remember, legitimate literary outlets will never charge you to publish your work or require you to purchase anything.

Fraud is now a multi-billion dollar industry, andlaw enforcement, while doing its best, has found it difficult to keep up. While there are many more scams than space allows here, we are list-ing a few to be aware of. Tidbits believes, as al-ways, that the best defense is knowledge.

FIGHT FRAUD! by Robyn Dawson

Fraud is now a multi-billion dollar industry, and law enforcement, while doing its best, has found it difficult to keep up. Tidbits believes, as al-ways, that the best weapon is knowledge. • The jury duty scam involves a phone call

informing the victim that he failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant has been is-sued for his arrest. When the target protests that he never received a jury summons, the scammer then asks for personal information such as a social security number and birth-date (and sometimes bank account number) in order to “confirm” the victim’s claim.

Armed with such sensitive info, a scammer can easily commit identity theft and rack up thousands of dollars of charges in someone else’s name. No one from local, county, state or federal courts should ask for personal in-formation over the telephone. Most courts deal with jury duty matters strictly by mail.

• Telemarketing scammers might try to sell you almost anything over the phone, from magazine subscriptions to office supplies to “discount” vacations. They may aggressively encourage you to reveal information such as your credit card or bank account number. They’ll say that you “must act now or the of-fer will expire,” or that you’ve won a gift but must pay the postage/handling charges.

If you receive a call offering some sort of premium or prize, or asking for a donation, ask the caller to instead contact you in writ-ing – a letter or brochure with the pertinent details. Legitimate companies and organiza-tions will gladly comply with this request, and once you peruse the literature, you can make an informed decision without pressure. Any telemarketer who balks at this request is very likely a scam artist.

WEIRD WONDERFUL

WORDS

grow on maple trees. Vomer: that pliable, slender bone separating the nostrils.

• In the Shan language of Burma, inflection and tone means a great deal. With the proper inflection, the sentence, “Ma ma ma ma ma” means “Help the horse, a mad dog is coming.”

• In America, Rice Krispies say “snap crackle and pop” but in Sweden they say “piff paff puff” and in South Africa they say “knap knaetter knak” and in Germany “knisper knasper knusper.”

• The Russian word for hurry is bystro. When Russian soldiers occupying Paris in 1814 sat down in French bars, they’d shout out “Bystro! Bystro!” Eventually bistro came to mean a small tavern or bar.

WORD ORIGINS• Makrama is the Turkish word meaning a fringed

napkin and gives us macrame.• In the South Seas the word tattaw means to

knock or to strike and gave us the word tattoo. • The chess term checkmate comes from the

Persian shah mat meaning “the king is dead.”• When Bradley, Voorhees, and Day formed an

underwear company in 1876, they called their product BVDs.

• The Hollywood stereotype of an Indian saying “How!” is based on the traditional Indian A-Hau meaning “Peace with you” or “All is well.”

• The ancient Greeks used a resin called ‘mumia’ or ‘momie’ to preserve bodies, giving us mummies.

• The word tip is an acronym for “To Insure Promptness.”

• The German word frau means wife. It is a contraction of two German words, froh meaning joy, and weh meaning woe.

• The word potpourri originally meant a stew. In French it literally means “putrid pot.”

CLIP AND SAVE

It has been said that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Read on, and you’ll possibly understand why.• Eighty percent of English words are not spelled

phonetically. That is, they are not written as they sound.

• ‘Manslaughter’ and ‘man’s laughter’ are spelled exactly the same. So are ‘fatherless’ and ‘fat her less.’

• The letter combination of ‘ough’ has more pronunciations than any other combinations: bough, bought, cough, dough, hiccough, rough, thoroughbred, through, and trough.

• The word ‘queue’ is the only word which retains its original pronunciation even when the last four letters are dropped.

• ‘Strengths’ is the longest word with only one vowel. ‘Latchstring’ has six consonants in a row. Beijing, Fiji, and hijinks have the most dots in a row. ‘Set’ has the most different meanings, with ‘run’ running a close second.

• George Bernard Shaw, who tried unsuccessfully to will his fortune to anyone who could invent a better alphabet, declared it was possible to spell fish ‘ghoti’ by using gh as in enough; o as in women; and ti as in nation. But there are many ways to spell fish. For instance: Phusi- physics / busy / pension. FFess- off / pretty / issue. Ughyce- laugh / hymn / ocean. The list is endless.

• ‘Floccinaucinihilipilification’ is the longest word in the Oxford English Dictionary. The word is unusual not only because it dates back to 1741; not only because it has 29 letters with 9 i’s and no e’s, but also because it means to classify something as worthless or trivial.

• Amaze your friends by dropping these words into the conversation: Foozle: a bungling golf stroke. Groak: to stare hopefully at other’s food. Schizocarps: those pinwheel seeds that

Q: I was a little hesitant about watch-ing season six of “True Blood” because, in my opinion, it really jumped the shark last season. But I can say now that I am happy I stuck with it, because this season has been really good so far. Will there be a seventh season? -- Anna-Marie P., via e-mail

A: HBO just announced that the vampire/were-wolf/shapeshifter/fairy/witch drama will be back for a seventh season, which will premiere summer 2014. I re-cently spoke with a member of the Shreveport wolf pack -- Jamie Gray Hyder, who plays Alcide’s other girl-friend, Danielle -- and she too is ex-cited about what the rest of the season has to offer. “There are some pretty big things that are go-ing to go on that I don’t even know that much about,” Jamie told me. “If it’s a scene I’m not in, I don’t know what happens; I’m watching along with everyone else. But tensions are going to be heightened, and the stakes are going to continue to be raised. We’ve got the vampires versus the government, and now we have this ‘Billith’ creature, and the potential for things to completely implode is very real. “With the vampires being attacked, we don’t know who’s going to be next ... who’s going to be the next target. We’re scrambling just to keep our pack as tight as possible, and look out for our people. I think all of the supes are sort of banding together. It’s very important for all of our survival.” There are a handful of episodes left of sea-son six of “True Blood,” which airs Sunday nights at 9 ET/PT. And I’m sure we’ll all be surprised by who survives to see a seventh season -- and who does not. ***

Q: With Joy Behar leaving “The View,” who will they get to replace her? -- Tina F., Phoenix, Ariz.

A: Barbara Walters, who is the only origi-nal panelist left on the show and who plans to retire in 2014, announced that Jenny McCarthy will take over Joy’s empty chair when the show begins its 17th season on Sept. 9. Of Jenny’s hiring, Barbara said: “Jenny brings us intelligence as well as warmth

and humor. She can be serious and outrageous. She has connected with our audience and offers a fresh point of view. Jenny will be a great addition to the show.” Sherri Shepherd and Whoopi Goldberg also are expected to return. ***

Q: Can you tell me what Mira Sorvino has been up to lately? She is one of my favorite actresses. -- Heidi R., via e-mail

A: The USA Network just revealed that the Oscar winner has signed on to a multi-episode arc of “Psych,” beginning with the seventh episode of the eighth season (which is rumored to be the show’s final season). She will play the Santa Barbara PD’s newest head detective, Betsy Brannigan, who is be-ing described by USA as “incredibly sweet, adorably reserved and yet certified badass.”

Paralyzed by Too Many Choices Dear Mary: I am looking to purchase a new dishwasher, as my 10-year-old GE model is leaking and will cost at least $300 to repair. My husband and I are “light users,” running a full load every four days or so. We rinse dishes and basically use the dishwasher on the short cycle, and it has always worked fine for us. We have looked at many brands, read many reviews and find that there are pros and cons about each brand we have seen. We did go to Consumer Reports for its suggestions and still are very confused. What are things we should be looking for in this search? -- Jan, email

Dear Jan: Here’s what I would do if I were you: Determine the price you’re willing to pay for a dishwasher and the top three features you want -- for example, Rinse/Hold, Short Wash and must be very quiet. Go to a Sears store, which now carries the top brands of appliances (you can also shop online at Sears’ retail online site or the Sears Outlet), with your three requirements and color choice. Then listen and pay close attention to what you learn. In the store, the salesman will try to steer you into a higher-end model with lots of bells and whistles you’ll probably never use. Keep going back to your three “must-haves.” Then make the decision, ar-range for delivery and installation, and don’t look back. If you hold out to find the perfect dishwash-er at the perfect price, you’ll still be looking this time next year -- and driving yourself nuts with frustra-

tion and indecision. By the way, I found my LG steam dryer online at the Sears Outlet -- the companion model to my new LG Wave Force washer, which I had pur-chased locally. What a bargain. I had to check daily because the Sears Outlet online inventory changes frequently. But once I found it, I snapped it up in a hurry. Even with shipping from Ohio, it was half the price of buying it locally. I could view a close-up photo of the scratch that sent my dryer to the outlet and before agreeing to purchase. Even though considered damaged, the dryer came complete with the full manufacturer’s warranty. And once set into place, the scratch is completely hidden. I’m still pumped about that bargain. Good luck, and I hope you are able to make your decision quickly. * * * Dear Mary: I have several very nice leath-er purses in light colors. Two are white, and the others are beige. I hate to get rid of them, as they were quite expensive and look very nice, but they are so dirty that I just cannot use them. Also they are in perfect condition other than the dirt. I still hang on to them because I can’t bring myself to throw them away. How can I clean them safely? I have asked at various cleaners, but they do not do leather purses -- although some of them do leather jackets. -- Barbara, California

Dear Barbara: Try a Mr. Clean Magic Eras-er sponge, available in any supermarket or discount department store. Dampen it with water, then go to work on those purses. I’ve had excellent results using one of these erasers on everything from white plastic patio chairs to leather shoes, woodwork and painted walls, too. I wish I knew what makes these erasers work so well. Could it be magic? That being said, I am quite certain this will do the trick for your purses, provided the problem is dirt, not wear. * * *

How Are Your Computer Skills? To help with the claims backlog, the De-partment of Veterans Affairs wants you to file your claims online. So says a new release. The claims will be decided faster, officials say. The VA’s eBenefits portal online has been merged with the Veterans Benefits Management System (VBMS) at all the regional offices. On a computer you’ll be able to walk through the “inter-view-style application” with drop-down menus and pre-populated data fields. You can, they say, file your claims online just like you do your taxes. You’ll be able to upload digital images of records and evi-dence. And if you’re like many older veterans, you have no idea what all that means. Hint: If you’re going to file a claim and want help with the computer end of things, get a local Vet-erans Service Organization to go online and open your file. (You file an electronic power of attorney.) Since the benefits will date from whenever your file was started, that should be your first step. Once you open your online file and start plugging in informa-tion, you have one year to finish it up. Your original date of claim will be kept in your file. Study up on the Fully Developed Claim (where you state that you have no other information to add), because those re-ceive priority in processing, and get all your informa-tion in hand. In my opinion, if the VA wants to help the backlog of claims, it needs to hire more people to scan the documents into VBMS that come in the tra-ditional way. Still, if you’re up for online filing, you’ll need an eBenefits account, which means you need to complete a remote verification process or visit a VA regional office. Call 1-800-827-1000, option 7, if you already receive benefits by direct deposit.

Bringing Home Happy This summer I did something I hadn’t done in 20 years. And this something reminds me every day how much easier it is to give advice than it is to apply it. I got a puppy. He’s a German shepherd. His name is Happy. Happy came from a breeder I know in North Carolina. My wife and I flew in on a Friday, and the next day, bright and early on that beautiful Saturday morning, we drove to the breeder’s house like two anxious adoptive parents. When we arrived, the breeder’s property was bustling with at least 15 people and their dogs already midway through a training session. One of the dogs being trained was 14 months old and from the same parents as the pup we were there to meet, the dog who would be Happy. Beautiful boy. My wife was with me not for moral support or the trip to North Carolina. The dog we would fly home with was to be her dog. I was there to play matchmaker. That morning, we met not one dog but two. I rattled my car keys, turned them onto their backs, waved my hands in their little puppy faces and watched them interact -- with us and with each other. My wife played with both pups, and both are good dogs. But one was clearly sweeter, gentler, and the other was more strong-willed and a little pushy with the other. Being a household that already includes one German shepherd and three Cardigan Welsh Cor-gis, a natural inclination toward playing nicely with others was a must. Happy it was -- until we got back to the hotel, that is. That night, we got no sleep. The teething, the whining... Like I said, 20 years had elapsed since I last did this. Don’t get me wrong. We both were excited and thrilled to be bringing Happy home. But the challenges of raising a puppy were already seep-ing back into the forefront of my awareness. The thought that kept coming to me all night long: As much as I’ve yakked about this my whole adult life, I hope I still know how to do it. We arrived home to a quiet house. In prepa-ration for our arrival, we had boarded our other dogs to give us uninterrupted bonding time with the new guy. Otherwise, dogs will bond with one another and ignore the humans. At this initial stage, caring, feeding, loving and nurturing are the priorities - it’s not the time to lay down the law or begin training. We set Happy up

WARNING: Reading Tidbits is habit forming

to sleep in his comfy crate right next to our bed. We hear him when he cries, and he lets us know when he needs to go out, when he’s hungry, when he needs a frozen washcloth to soothe his aching jaws from the teething. And we’ve had no housebreaking accidents at all, which makes me think I’ve still got it! I actually do know what I’m talking about! Whenever Happy’s inside, he’s either on a leash or in his crate. We’ll maintain this rule for months, and all new puppy parents would be wise to, as well. Last night at sunset, I was sitting on the back deck with Happy. There was a broom propped up against a wall behind us. Happy wanted to eat that broom. The leash and the crate help you to prevent destruction and to quietly set boundaries on behav-iors such as chewing. That said, as I look down right now, I can’t see the floor under my feet for the dog toys all around. With some things, boundaries are totally overrated.

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9)

Overdose of Narcotics on Rise Among Women The Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention reports that between 1999 and 2010 there was a dramatic increase in the number of women who died from overdoses of prescription painkillers. Here are some of the alarming statistics. The CDC notes that drug overdoses accounted for 34 percent of all suicide deaths among women, compared with 8 percent among men. One in 10 women’s suicides involved opioid painkillers. Each year, 6,600 women (18 daily) die from overdose of prescription painkillers and 940,000 women are rushed to the ER for drug use and misuse. Prescription drug deaths are more frequent than those from illegal drug use; they’re also more common among women than deaths from injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents. Most of the increase comes from the use of hydrocodone and Oxycontin (a long-acting mor-phine). According to the International Narcotics Control Board, 99 percent of all the prescriptions written for hydrocodone in the world were written in the United States. The board, a watchdog agency that monitors compliance with United Nations’ inter-national drug control conventions, also notes that American physicians prescribe far more narcotic drugs per million people than those in any other country. Opioids, including morphine in various forms and hydrocodone, prevent a great deal of suffering in patients with life-threatening illnesses such as some cancers. They are also a must for the short-term management of pain caused by a serious acute illness, accidents, broken bones or major surgery. The greatest dilemma occurs in patients with chronic pain. All too frequently, physicians readily turn to hydrocodone (for example, Vicodin or Lortab) for pain relief when patients do not re-spond to non-addicting pain medications. And once started, it is often impossible to wean the patient off the drug. When hydrocodone becomes ineffective, many physicians turn to morphine derivatives. The most commonly prescribed is long-acting Oxycontin (time-released oxycodone), which is effective for 12 hours. And if this is insufficient, the shorter-acting oxycodone, which lasts for six hours, is given for breakthrough pain; that is, the presence of pain despite treatment with Oxycontin. Another choice is a morphine patch (Fentanyl) that lasts for 72 hours

and, on occasion, a morphine pump. The decision to start narcotic therapy for chronic pain is serious, and neither patient nor physician should take this step lightly. It is impor-tant to make the patient aware of all the possible consequences. Many experts believe it prudent to consider an evaluation by a specialist pain team, to consider less dangerous alternatives, to provide needed psychological support and to assess the risk of addiction. Anyone starting a narcotic should sign a contract promising that all pain medication will be prescribed by only one physician. Addicted patients “doctor shop” to have narcotics prescribed by more than one provider. Fortunately, almost all states, including Arkansas, have developed a registry where any pharmacist or physician can readily determine whether nar-cotic drugs are being obtained from multiple sites. Arkansas’ new Prescription Monitoring Program is administered by the state Department of Health. Dosage of narcotics often increases gradu-ally because the patient develops tolerance to the drug. There is always the risk of addiction, although this should never be a reason not to prescribe the drugs if warranted. If tolerance and addiction to prescription painkillers develop, pain perception alters in a negative way. Although the cause of pain is un-changed, the patient reports the pain as much more severe, begging for higher doses of narcotics to obtain needed relief. This creates a vicious cycle of ever escalating pain and the demand for larger or more frequent doses. In desperation, a patient might take too large a dose, leading to life-threatening accidental overdose. Alternately, a relatively large dose of a narcotic combined with alcohol, sleeping pills or an-tidepressants can be the cause of emergency room visits or death. Narcotics have serious adverse effects that lead to a higher risk of suicide. Confusion, somno-lence, memory loss and profound depression are common, as are loss of appetite, profound weak-ness, nausea and violent gastrointestinal distress. This constellation of symptoms creates a higher risk of inappropriate medication use. For most people with chronic pain, ap-propriate management with non-addicting medica-tions combined with local therapy (injections, heat, cooling or electrical stimulation), physical therapy, chiropractic care and acupuncture can offer great benefit. Education of the family and the patient about the appropriate use of these dangerous drugs is critical, and psychotherapy to assist with coping skills and relaxation techniques can help alleviate pain substantially. * * * Dr. David Lipschitz is the author of the book “Breaking the Rules of Aging.” To find out more about Dr. David Lipschitz and read features by other Creators Syn-dicate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate Web page at www.creators.com. Law Firms That Specialize in Social Security Disability

Q: You recently wrote a column in which you said it is very difficult to qualify for Social Security disability benefits. I think just the opposite is true. It is so easy to get on the government disability dole. After all, you see so many commercials on TV from lawyers who tell people that they can get anyone on Social Security disability. They must somehow be in cahoots with the government. I’ll bet they have their own doctors who automatically get people enrolled in the program. Isn’t that a big scam?

A: No, it’s not a big scam. And you are missing the point if you think the fact that many law firms specialize in Social Security disability law proves that I was wrong when I said that it is very difficult to qualify for disability benefits from Social Security. Just the opposite is true. Why do you think an entire cottage indus-try of private legal specialists has grown up around the Social Security disability program? It’s because the Social Security disability eligibility rules are so stringent. Or to put that another way, if it was easy to qualify for disability benefits, why would people need to hire lawyers to get those benefits? In the world of disability benefit programs, including those from other government agencies and the private sector, Social Security is known for having the strictest definition of disability. Essen-tially, the law says you must have an impairment that prevents you from doing ANY kind of work for at least 12 months. Or you must have a condition that is terminal. Despite this rather simple-sounding defini-tion of “disability,” it can be such a complicated and such a personal issue. As I always point out, one per-son’s disabling condition may be another person’s minor inconvenience. For example, I have a friend who is a paraplegic and must use a wheelchair. If you were to see him, you would say, “There is a disabled guy.” Yet he works full time and gets upset when people refer to him as disabled. On the other hand, I’ve helped hundreds of people file for Social Secu-rity disability benefits because they had conditions as relatively minor as bad knees or a sore back. That’s one of the reasons why it is so difficult to administer a disability program. Here is another. Think of the hundreds of different kinds of possible disabling conditions: heart trouble, kidney disease, brain damage, cancer, nervous disorders, muscular and skeletal issues, mental health problems, etc. The list goes on and on. How do you decide how badly damaged a heart must be before someone can get disability? How dysfunctional must a kidney be to keep someone from working? How much pain must a person endure to make him or her unemployable and eligible for benefits? The Social Security Admin-istration has established guidelines to help its dis-ability claims evaluators make that decision for each potential condition. Yet no matter how much they try to objectify that process, the decision is still ultimate-ly a subjective one. And that’s what leads to so much disagree-ment. And that’s why sometimes lawyers get in-volved. But despite your allegations, the legal and

other firms who specialize in disability law are defi-nitely not “in cahoots” with the government. Instead, it is very much an adversarial relationship. And they certainly don’t “automatically get people on the pro-gram.” Having said that, I will point out that they do have a high degree of success helping folks qualify for Social Security disability. Why is that? Remem-ber those disability guidelines I mentioned earlier? The folks who work at these law firms have those guidelines memorized backwards and forwards. And when they are representing a disability claimant at a hearing before one of Social Security’s “administra-tive law judges,” they can “talk the talk” and “walk the walk.” They know exactly how to present a case convincingly. That is not to say that lawyers or other spe-cialists are always needed to help a disability claim-ant get his or her Social Security benefits. Let me back up a few steps. No one needs a lawyer to file his or her first claim for disability benefits. That’s a relatively simple process of filling out a bunch of forms and then sit-ting back and waiting (usually about three months) for a decision. I have written past columns offering folks tips on filing for Social Security disability ben-efits. About 35 percent of first-time claims are ap-proved. Of course, that means 65 percent are denied. The reason a high percentage of first time claims are denied is because many folks file for disability benefits out of desperation. Most of them are simply unemployed and not really “disabled.” If your disability claim is denied, the first ap-peal is what SSA calls a reconsideration. And that is merely a matter of filling out a few more forms and waiting a couple more months for a decision. A re-consideration is just an internal review of the disabil-ity claim by SSA personnel. The last statistics I saw showed that between 10 and 20 percent of disability claims are approved at this level. But if your claim is turned down again, then the next step in the appeals process is a hear-ing before the aforementioned SSA judge. You don’t

need legal help for this process. But many people feel more comfortable having an attorney represent them at the hearing. And if you use such help, you’ve got about a 70 percent chance of getting your disabil-ity claim approved. That’s the good news. The bad news is it will cost you. Most of these firms will take 25 percent of any back pay benefits you receive.

Diabetic Diet Can be Daunting DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What should I eat with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol? All the advice I get tells me what I cannot eat -- no potatoes, no bread, no crackers, no cereal, no fruit. Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I don’t know what to eat. -- C.L.

ANSWER: The diet for type 1 and type 2 diabetes is not as restrictive as it once was. You can eat all the foods you mentioned. Sugar also can be eaten, something that was strictly prohibited in the past. You have to use it in moderation, and it’s best to save sugar calories for other carbohydrates by using artificial sweeteners. Weight reduction, if applicable to you, is the best way for you to control blood sugar. A 5 percent to 10 percent weight loss is a sure way to keep blood sugar where it should be. For high blood pressure, limit salt. You ought not to eat more than 1,500 mg a day of sodium. Read the sodium content of foods on their nutrition labels. For cholesterol control, cut back on fatty meats and whole-fat dairy products. You can use low-fat dairy. Carbohydrates are an issue with diabetes. Carbohydrates are sugars and starches. They should constitute 50 percent to 55 percent of your total daily calories. Fruits (yes, you can eat them), vegetables, cereals, breads, crackers, pastas and similar foods are carbohydrates. You have to get a book that lists the calorie content of foods and their protein, fat and carbohydrate makeup. These guides are in all book-stores, and they’re cheap. Breakfast shouldn’t be a problem. You can drink orange juice if you like it, have cereal, have toast and drink coffee or whatever. You need a coach in the form of a dietitian. The dietitian can help you navigate through the dif-ficulties of understanding a diabetic diet. Your doctor or the local hospital can put you in touch with one.You also need to contact the American Diabetes As-sociation, whose website is www.diabetes.org. Or call 1-800-342-2383. The association will provide you with tons of information on diet and on diabetes in general. The booklet on diabetes presents this illness and its treatments in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 402W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My wife has taken blood pressure medicine for many years. She’s now 66. Her doctor put her on a new medicine that has her pressure at 125/65. It’s never been that low before. Is that too low for someone her age? -- L.W.

ANSWER: Does your wife complain of diz-ziness, especially upon standing up? If she doesn’t, then her pressure isn’t too low. Ideal blood pressure is lower than 120/80. It’s true older people don’t always tolerate a sudden drop in their pressure, even though the pres-sure might be in the normal range. I don’t consider your wife to be “older.” You’d better not either. * * * DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 59-year-old man. About five years ago, I had my spleen removed due to a traumatic injury. I was vac-cinated with the pneumococcus vaccine. I was

Exercise Study Is Game Changer Studies have shown that seniors need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise each week to help guard against heart disease and stroke, even diabetes. Previous guidelines said that we needed to have that moderate-intensity activity spread out over most days of the week. Researchers of a new study wanted to know whether it mattered how often we exercised, or it if was even important to get that exercise every day. What they learned might be a game changer for many of us who don’t want to make exercise a daily event or even work out for long blocks of time: It doesn’t matter whether we do it all at once, or in small blocks of 10 minutes, or some-where in between, as long as we get in our 150 minutes each week. They used more than 2,000 participants who agreed to wear accelerometers on their wrist to monitor their every move for a week. While the participants represented a wide range of ages, it was thought that the results applied to seniors, as the oldest participants were up to 79 years of age. That’s not to say we should forget about muscle building. Cardio for the heart is one thing, but muscles keep us upright, strong and balanced. We can get our cardio in pushing a lawn mower or riding a bike, anything that accelerates the heart rate, according to the information for older adults on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. For muscle-strengthening activities for the major muscle groups on two or more days a week, the CDC recommends lifting weights, working with resistance bands, heavy gardening and yoga -- whatever works the back, chest, shoulders, arms, legs and hips. This should make it much easier to stay in shape!

told that it would last a lifetime. Does that ap-ply to a person without a spleen? -- J.K.

ANSWER: The spleen is an integral part of the immune system. People who don’t have one are more susceptible to infections and, in particular, to pneumococcal infections. The pneumococcus (NEW-moe-KOK-us) causes pneumonia and potentially lethal blood infec-tions. People without a spleen need a second dose of the vaccine five years after the first dose. The pneu-mococcal vaccine is popularly called the pneumonia vaccine. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. The idea of Go Figure! is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

On Aug. 11, 1856, a hurricane hits Isle Derniere, a resort community on the Loui-siana coast, killing more than 400 people. The storm first brought blinding and tor-rential rain, then storm surges and finally a tidal wave. Upward of 150 people were carried off with the wave, with some bodies ending up 6 miles away.

On Aug. 6, 1890, at Auburn Prison in New York, the first execution in history by electrocution is carried out against William Kemmler. It didn’t go as planned. With the first charge, the current failed. A second charge was required for two minutes before Kemmler was declared deceased.

On Aug. 7, 1944, under the threat of Al-lied bombing during World War II, the Ger-man car manufacturer Volkswagen halts production of the “Beetle.” Volkswagen, under the control of the British military, be-gan turning out Beetles again in December 1945.

On Aug. 5, 1957, rock ‘n’ roll television show “American Bandstand” goes national with teens dancing and rating records on a scale from 35 to 98. The show was broad-cast from Philadelphia to 67 ABC affiliates across the country. Dick Clark was host, a slot he held for 27 years.

On Aug. 9, 1969, members of Charles Manson’s cult kill five people in movie di-rector Roman Polanski’s Beverly Hills, Ca-lif., home, including Polanski’s pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate. Polanski was not the cult leader’s intended target. Manson, an aspiring musician, chose the Polanski house because he had once unsuccess-fully tried to get a recording deal from a producer who used to live there.

On Aug. 10, 1978, three teenage girls die after their 1973 Ford Pinto is rammed from behind by a van and bursts into flames. It was known as far back as 1972 that the Pinto’s gas tank, which sat behind the rear axle, was particularly vulnerable to damage by rear-end collisions.

On Aug. 8, 1986, actor, writer and director Spike Lee’s first feature-length movie, “She’s Gotta Have It,” opens in the-aters around the United States. The movie launched Lee’s career and established his reputation as an outspoken filmmaker who often tackled controversial subjects.(c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Resolving Disputes Q: Like many of my neighbors, I get extremely frustrated when I make a purchase and find it doesn’t meet my expectations. Re-cently, I purchased a yellow dress that was on sale at a major department store for my 3-year-old granddaughter. After I got it home I found a button missing and a stitching mistake. Naturally I was disappointed, and al-though the price was right, I attempted to re-turn it for either cash or a gift card. The clerk was extremely unfriendly and flatly refused to accept the return. She pointed at a sign on the register that said sale items were not return-able. In my rush to make the purchase, I did not even see the sign. Is there anything I can do?

A: Even though the dress was a sale item, the attitude of the clerk was not in the best interest of the store in keeping you as a customer. Even a courtesy response and apology could have helped minimize your anger. Do not accept the clerk’s response, but re-turn to the store and ask to speak to a supervisor. If he/she does not resolve your request, your next step is to call or write the company’s president and express your complaint. Senior managers do not like these types of customer reports and expect their em-ployees to resolve these kinds of issues before they reach upper management. While employees are usually given stringent guidelines about returns, they should also be given some leeway in order to quickly satisfy unhappy cus-tomers. There are several chain stores that will ac-cept returns without questioning reasons for doing so. These stores are always gaining new customers because of that flexible policy. In the tough economy that we are now expe-riencing, wise store managers would do well to re-member the old adage: The customer is always right! * * *

Q: As the grandparent of a child who has just learned to walk, I recently fell when I stumbled over one of his plastic toys. Fortu-nately, I was not hurt and all is well. You should advise your older readers to be aware of these “toy dangers” when visiting their grandkids.

A: You are right. Toys are dangerous and are known to have caused major injuries. Other concerns that require being alert in grandchildren’s homes are loose rugs, children playing aggressively, slippery wet floors and children running around.

It is helpful when parents caution the chil-dren that their grandparents are not able to move around as easily as they are. If grandparents are us-ing canes and other support devices, parents should let the kids know that those items are not toys and that they should not be played with. Move cautiously when visiting at the kids’ house, and keep your eyes alert for items on the floor before you start walking from room to room. This simple precaution can avoid a nasty fall. In most cases, our grandchildren are the joy of our lives. But we must learn to be careful!

Figure Is a Stand Up Man Q: I am enclosing a photo of a clock I received from an older relative. This informa-tion is on the clock: “Made June 14, 1881, New York, New York, USA -- Made by Ansonia Clock Co. -- Patented June 14, 1881, June 13, 1882.” The clock is very ornate and decorat-ed with carvings of images of women’s heads, handles on each side of the clock and the figure of a man holding a book and standing next to a stack of books. The clock is quite heavy and made of metal. Does this clock have any value?

A: Ansonia Clock Company was founded by Anson G. Phelps in 1850. Your clock is a figural man-tle clock and the metal is spelter. The figures were d e c o r a t -ed with Japanese b r o n z e f i n i s h . C o l l e c -tors prefer clocks in the origi-nal finish. The value of those that have been re-painted is consider-ably di-minished. A n s o n i a went into receiver -ship in 1929 and was sold to Soviet Russia. Assuming the finish is original, it would probably be worth $500 to $800. * * *

Q: I have a Saturday Evening Post Norman Rockwell Memory Album. It is dated 1979 and contains the best of Norman Rock-well art from the archives of the Curtis Publish-ing Company. It is in the form of a magazine, and I found it at a garage sale in Palm Springs. I am wondering if it is valuable.

A: There are quite a few copies of the Rock-well Memory Album selling in the range of $15 to $35. * * *

Q: I have sent the mark that is on a set of porcelain dishes that I have. Each piece is signed “Remy.” The set includes a serving platter, 12 dinner plates and a matching sauce dish with under plate, and they are in perfect condition They are all decorated with fish against a white background and trimmed in gold. Could you please tell who made my set, where it was made and the vintage and value?

A: You have a fish set that was made by A. Klingenberg and Dwenger. They were located in Limoges, France, from the 1880s to the First World War. “Remy” is the name of the artist who hand

painted your set. Sets of porcelain dishes that were decorated with fish or game were very popular in the Victorian Era. Your circa-1900 fish set would probably be worth $800 to $1500.

Initiate Your Swing with a Trigger in the Legs

Have you ever stood over the ball and looked out to thetarget in the distance and thought “ok now what”? Manygolfers’ face this dilemma of standing over their ball ataddress and have no idea how to trigger their takeaway.Sometimes starting the swing can be the most difficult thingto do! Here are my keys to getting the swing started tocreate a great shot. I think the key to a great swing is to work it from the groundup; feet, knees, hips, shoulders and then into the arms andhands. To often I see higher handicappers swing too muchwith their arms and not utilize the stronger muscles of thelegs. Trigger your swing by relaxing your legs softly downand allow the arms to drift straight back along the targetline (as seen in the photo). The two things that you are trying to do in the takeawaywhich leads into the backswing is to 1) store up power forthe forward swing through the ball 2) direct the golf clubalong the target line with a square clubface. It my Empowered Golf strategy to have the legs be thepower source in the golf swing, since they are the strongestmuscles in the body. I think it is key that the legs trigger theswing by starting tall at address, which will allow them toflex, or load downward, to begin the motion of thebackswing, this in turn will be like loading up a spring forpower in the forward swing. The next thing you need to do is to get the golf club movingin the correct path back away from the ball. It is my Empowered Golf strategy to have the golf club control thedirectional motion of the ball. This is controlled through theshoulders, arms and hands to reference the club to thetarget line in the takeaway. Notice in the picture how I havethe golf club moving straight back along the target line(white line) as my legs are loading downward to store uppower for the forward swing.

Initiate your swing with atrigger in the legs Have you ever stood over the ball at address, looked out to the distant target and thought, “OK, now what?” Many golfers face this dilemma sim-ply because they don’t know how to trigger their takeaway. Sometimes just starting the swing can be the most difficult part of the process! Here are my key steps in getting your swing started to create a great shot: The first key is to work it from the ground up; feet, knees, hips, shoulders and then the arms and hands. All too often I see high handicappers swing too much with their arms and not utilize the more powerful muscles of the lower body. It is my Empowered Golf Strategy to have the strength of the legs be the power source. Start tall at address and then let your legs flex down slightly as you begin the backswing, as shown in the photo. This is much like loading tension in a spring mechanism. As you do this, bring the clubhead back in the takeaway motion and guide it along the target line (white line in the photo). The clubhead, the di-rectional source of the swing, is controlled through the shoulders, arms and hands. Once your back-swing has reached its limit, the legs are now load-ed and ready to supply the power you need for the forward swing and a great fairway shot!

STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS

mostly hydrocarbons and do not indicate the presence of actual life forms.

SPACE TRASH• Scientists, engineers, and space planners in

general are becoming increasingly concerned with the growing number of small pieces of space junk. The North American Aerospace Defense Command currently tracks more than 7,000 objects the size of a baseball or larger orbiting the Earth. Recent research appears to show there are many more large objects we aren’t tracking. At least half of these small objects come from the 80 satellites that have broken up while in orbit, and there are probably millions of smaller particles up there.

• NASA regards these particles as no small matter. A particle no more than 0.6 millimeters wide can penetrate one of the space suits currently used by the space program. When the shuttle Challenger was orbiting in 1983, a small chip of paint hit the windshield and gouged a quarter-inch crater. The space debris can also wreak havoc on Earth-bound astronomers and delicate equipment in orbit.

ASTONISHING ASTRONOMY• On a clear night, the average person can see

only about 3,000 stars. If the sum of all starlight that falls on the Earth could be concentrated on one point, it would only equal a 100-watt bulb as seen from a distance of more than 600 feet.

• Just one square inch of the sun’s surface shines with the intensity of 300,000 candles.

• The sun contains 99.9% of our solar system’s entire mass.

• The full moon is nine times as bright as the half moon because the surface of the visible half moon is extremely rough and mountainous. This makes for more shadows and less reflected sunlight.

QUICK BIT• 12 men have walked on the surface of the moon.

Their footprints will be visible for unknown millions of years. Those dozen men have spent a total of 300 hours there, and returned to earth with 842 lbs. (381 kg) of lunar rock.

ENDANGERED SIGHTS & SOUNDS (cont’d):• How long has it been since you’ve used a

typewriter eraser? Or, if you’re younger, have you moved your belongings into a long-unused desk, only to find a strange-looking gadget with fiber-like hairs bushing out of one end? What you’ve found is a typewriter eraser. Usually shaped like a pencil, the tip was made of an especially-abrasive rubber, which was used to “erase” the typing error. The other end featured a small brush made of stiff plastic strands that was used to sweep the remnants of the erasure off the page.

• There’s no shortage of litter on the ground to-day, but thankfully, we no longer see discarded pull-tabs. The tabs on older easy-open beverage cans pulled completely off the can. People who walked in bare feet were constantly dodging these carelessly-dropped metal hazards.

• The rhythmic “beep” of the scanner is the musical accompaniment to the supermarket checkout line. But if you’ve ever wondered where the cliché of saying “ka-ching!” in re-lation to money comes from, that’s the sound that the old-style electric, not electronic, cash registers made. Cashiers of that era had to manually punch a series of buttons to ring up your purchase, followed by a smack of the “total” button with the heel of the hand.

• “Do you want your carbons?” used to be an automatic question asked by merchants after you’d signed for a credit card payment. At that time, credit card receipts were filled out by hand in triplicate, with a small piece of carbon paper inserted between each sheet. It didn’t take long for thieves to realize they could retrieve the used carbons from the trash and steal valuable credit card information. Once that scam gained popularity, waiters and cashiers regularly of-fered the carbons to customers, giving them the opportunity to destroy them.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM TIDBITS!

SCARY MOVIESby Ryan Toepfer

Some people just seem to love having the living daylights scared out of them. Why else would horror and suspense movies be so popular? To celebrate Halloween, Tidbits goes behind the scenes of some classic thrillers.• When Alfred Hitchcock purchased the film

rights for Psycho, he also bought up as many copies of the original novel as he could find, hoping to keep the story’s ending a secret.

• The famous shower scene of Psycho was filmed using a double for Norman Bates, as Anthony Perkins was appearing in a play (Greenwillow)in New York at the time. The first time Perkins actually saw that scene was back at the studio, watching the daily “rushes,” and he said he was just as scared as everyone else.

• Take a close look at Michael Myers’ mask in the 1978 camp classic Halloween. Does the face look familiar? The movie was filmed on such a tight budget, that the prop department had to make do with what they had. For Myers’ disguise, they used an old Captain Kirk (StarTrek) mask, which they spray painted white and then re-shaped the eyeholes.
