The word “black” doesn’t necessesarily mean an object’s color; it can have cultural and psy- chological implications as well. This week, Tidbits explores a variety of ways that we can use both the word and the color itself to mean different things.• Thoseitemsthatareblackdonotreflectanyrays
from the visible light spectrum. Rather, they absorb the frequencies of all color pigments. The combination of all the primary colors of red, yellow and blue creates black. The absence of all these primary colors results in white.
• Themeanings associated with different colorscan vary greatly between cultures. For example, most of us are aware of the superstition that if a black cat crosses our path, bad luck is on the way. In Great Britain and Ireland, however, that black feline is a symbol of good luck. The Scots even believe that a black cat near their house means prosperity is imminent. The Japanese also look upon it as good luck, and that ladies who own one will have many suitors.
• TheGermansclaimthatthereissignificanceinthespecificdirectionthatablackcattakeswhenpassing in front of you If it crosses your path from right to left, it’s considered a bad omen, while a left to right course signifies future

Taj Mahal
Situated near the banks of the River Jumna in northern India sits the world’s most stunning mausoleum, visited by some four million sightseers every year. This week, Tidbits has gathered some interesting information about the Taj Mahal, one man’s monument to his undying affection for his beloved wife. • Intheearly1600s,theemperorShahJahanmet
his future bride, later to become his third wife, whenhewasjust15yearsoldanddeclareditwasloveatfirstsight.Althoughthecoupledidnotmarryforanotherfiveyears,theyremainedquite close during the interim. Upon their marriage, he titled his bride Mumtaz Mahal, meaning “Chosen One of the Palace,” and he began construction of an opulent and luxurious royal home for them to share.
•In 1631, the Shah set out with his armies topacify an uprising. His wife chose to accompany him, which was not an unusual occurrence at that time, except that she was well advanced in pregnancy. After experiencing complications,MumtazMahal,age38,diedshortlyafter thebirthoftheir14thchild.Withherdyingbreath,she asked her husband to promise to honor their mutual love by building the world’s most beautiful mausoleum.
•ConstructionoftheTajMahalbeganin1632,andanestimated20,000laborersworkedontheedificeoverthecourseofmorethan21years.Along ramp over nine miles in length was built for dragging heavy materials to the building site. Teamsof30oxenaswell as1,000elephantspulled marble blocks to a sophisticated pulley system that raised the blocks into position.
•A huge gateway and ornate arch welcomevisitors to the area, symbolic of the gateway
through which Muslim tradition holds that Mohammed entered Paradise. The marble portal of the main entrance is inscribed with the “promiseofAllah,”whichreads,“Othousoulatpeace, return thou unto thy Lord. These are the Gardens of Eden, enter them and live forever.”
•A minaret standsat each of the four corners of the pedestal platform

1. Where do bachelors keep young ladies’ phone numbers?
2. What dense black wood is widely grown in southern India?
The “Crash of ‘29” came on October 29, 1929, whenthe New York Stock Exchange completely collapsed after several days of panic. On “Black Tuesday,” the Dow lost 23 percent of its value wiping out billions of dollars in wealth in one day, financially ruin- ing countless banks, businesses and individuals. Along with soaring unemployment rates, this ushered in the 12 years of the Great Depresssion.

● It was double Nobel Prize-winning chemist and peace activist Linus Paul-ing who made the following sage obser-vation: “The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas.”
● The acre as a unit of measurement has been with us for quite some time. Originally, an acre was considered to be the amount of land that could be tilled in a single day by one man behind one ox.
● If you’ve seen the movie “The Wizard of Oz,” you might remember that in the Emerald City, the horses were a variety of bright colors. No special effects there -- the set designers simply rubbed the animals with Jell-O powder to achieve the bright hues. Those scenes had to be shot very quickly, though, since the horses had a tendency to lick off their colors.
● If you spent some part of the 1980s trying to puzzle out a solution to a Ru-bik’s Cube, you may be surprised to learn that the world record, held by Frenchman Edouard Chambon, is just 9.18 seconds. And it was set in 2008.
● You may not have learned about it in school, but during the summer and early autumn of 1859, the United States and the British became involved in a conflict known as The Pig War. In June of that year, a pig on American soil was shot by a British infantryman in Canada. In response to the provocation, the Ameri-can militia camped out on the border for four months, until the British finally apologized. No lives were lost (other than the pig’s).
● Those who study such things say that the lightning on Jupiter is 1,000 times more powerful than the lightning here on Earth. *** Thought for the Day: “A person who trusts no one cannot himself be trusted.” -- Jerome Blattner

NUTS!THAT’S JUST
Tidbits is feeling a little nutty this week! Learn more about how some of these tasty additions to yourdietcanbequitebeneficialtoyourhealth. •Sometimes called para nuts or cream nuts,
Brazil nuts are grown in tropical South American rainforests. Their name might be“Brazil,” but most of the world’s supply comes from Bolivia. The huge tree that produces them growsupto150feettalland6feetindiameter.The nuts form inside a hard pod about the size ofacoconut,whichholdsbetween15and25nuts. Because these heavy pods can fall great distances from high atop the tree without warning, harvesters have to wear protective helmets to avoid serious injury or even death. Brazil nuts are high in fat, about 65 percentin content, which causes them to spoil more readily than other nuts.
•We call them peanuts, but they’re notreally nuts — Peanuts are legumes grown underground. Of all the nuts thatAmericanssnack on, peanuts account for two-thirds of thetotal,about700millionpoundseveryyear.Oneacreofplantswillproduce2,860poundsof peanuts, enough to make 30,000 peanutbuttersandwiches.One18-ouncejarofpeanutbutter requires850peanuts. Justoverhalfofthe U.S. crop comes from Georgia, with half of Georgia’s crop going to the manufacture of peanut butter. Chocolate manufacturers use another20percentofthepeanutcrop.
•If you have a phobia about peanut buttersticking to the roof of your mouth, there’s actually a name for that. You suffer from arachibutyrophobia.
•What’s the difference between a filbert anda hazelnut? Nothing! They are one and the same. St. Philbert was a 7th century abbotwho founded a French monastery. His feast dayisAugust22,thedaythatfilbertsripeninEngland. St. Philibert’s many accomplishments are commemorated by the nut that bears his name. French settlers introduced the tree to Oregon, where they are widely grown, making themthatstate’sofficialnut.
•Walnuts must have been a popular snack inPompeii, Italy. Archaeologists have founduneaten walnuts in the remains of the ancient city, buried by the eruption of the Mt. Vesuvius volcanoin79A.D..Ahealthywalnuttreecanproducenutsfornearly100years.
•Two varieties of nuts are mentioned in theBible, almonds and pistachios. The almond is not a true nut, but rather a drupe, related to other stone fruits, such as peaches, plums, apricots and cherries. California is the world’s top producer of almonds, although they are also grown in Spain, Syria, Iran and Morocco. These nutritious nuts are an excellent source of protein, potassium, Vitamin E and magnesium, and have been shown to help lower cholesterol. Twenty-fivealmondscontainonly160calories,and only one gram of saturated fat.
•Pistachios,mentionedinGenesis43:11,comefrom one of the oldest flowering nut treesknown, harvested for at least the past 6,000years. A member of the cashew family, thepistachio is one of the lowest calorie nuts — about100calories for30nuts.Theyarealsoa good source of antioxidants, scoring higher than a cup of green tea.
•Have you “gone pecan?” In New Orleans’
lingo, that’s not a good thing; it means you’re beyond help! The pecan tree is the state tree of Texas, and Pecan Festivals are held there annually.
• Primarily grown in tropical climates, cashewnuts are always a tasty snack, but when freshly pickedtheircausticskinmustfirstberemovedbefore they can be eaten. Once they’re ready, cashews are delicious and jam-packed with nutritional content!

Q:Oneofmyfavoriteshowsthissea-son, “PanAm,”was canceled. Is it onDVD?-- Pat S., via email
A:“Pan Am” is not yet available on DVD; however, you can own all the episodes via Amazon. The show is available for instant viewing on your PC, Mac, compatible TV or other device. Simply go to Amazon.com and search “Pan Am” to learn more. ***
Q:Canyoutellmewhatoneofmyfa-voriterockstars,BretMichaels,hasbeenuptolately?-- Rhiannon G., via email
A: The Poison frontman has been touring with Def Leppard and Lita Ford this summer, as well as promoting his new line of pet clothes, toys and accesso-ries. Bret Michaels’ Pets Rock collec-tion is available only through PetSmart (in stores and online at petsmart.com). As the owner of the cut-est Boston terrier in the world, I couldn’t wait to speak with Bret about his new line of doggie-wear. Bret explained the collaboration between himself and PetSmart: “They’d all come up to my house (in Arizona, where PetSmart is based), and I would show them a design, and I’d show them the stuff my pets were playing with. We would talk about it and we would draw some stuff up, and then they would take it back and work on it. It was very col-laborative. As you know, safety is a huge factor, along with durability.” But just because Bret had a hand in design-ing a doggie tutu, it doesn’t mean he’s gone soft. He told me: “In the music business, you might get lucky for a record or two, but you’re not going to survive 25, 26 years unless you know the business side of the entertainment business, which is really tough. It really gave me a thick skin. I’ll say this about any musician who’s lasted more than two years: You’ve really gotta be on your game. It’s tough to get into the business -- to get that break -- but it’s way tougher
to stay there.” ***
Q: Is it true that a movie is in theworks based on the “ShatteredUnion” videogame? -- Vinnie P., Springfield, Ohio
A: Jerry Bruckheimer is in the very early stages of development. He has joined with Disney and screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski (creator of “Babylon 5”) to bring the video game to life, perhaps sometime in 2013. ***
Q: I loved Frances Conroy on “SixFeet Under” and “American Horror Story.”What else can I see her in? -- Deanna R., via email
A: Frances is all set to play June Carter Cash’s mother, Maybelle Carter, in the Lifetime orig-inal movie “Ring of Fire,” which is set to air later this year. The movie stars Jewel as June and Matt Ross as Johnny, and centers on June and her rise to fame, from singing with her sisters to her solo career to her third (and longest) marriage to Johnny Cash. * * *

Stand Downs: Help for Homeless Vets Homeless veterans are frequently at a dis-advantage when it comes to getting services and help. Stand Down events are held specifically to assist homeless veterans. While Stand Downs can be held almost year-round, most communities and organizations host events during the summer. If you or someone you know is a homeless veteran in need of any services, now is the time. Services provided at Stand Downs in-clude assistance with food, shelter, clothing, health screenings and benefits counseling for both VA and Social Security. If a veteran needs referrals for jobs, drug- or alcohol abuse or housing, they can find that, too. Events run from one to three days, depending on location. Many people, volunteers and groups step forward to host the Stand Downs -- community homeless agencies, the Department of Veterans Affairs, veterans service organizations -- all for one purpose: to help homeless veterans. If you’re homeless (or you know someone who is) and can get to a computer, go online to the list of Stand Downs held in conjunction with the VA: www.va.gov/HOMELESS/standdown.asp. The listings include a contact telephone number in your area. If you can’t get online, call the Homeless Veterans Programs Office at 202-461-1857. The National Coalition for Homeless Veter-ans also sponsors Stand Downs. Find it online at http://nchv.org/index.cfm. Click “Stand Down” on the left column. The NCHV site includes resource, health and job fairs. As with the VA list, each list-ing includes a local contact number, or call NCHV at 1-800-VET-HELP. Don’t let a lack of transportation keep you from getting the help you need at a Stand Down. If you inquire in advance, it’s likely that you’ll be given a ride to and from the event.

Debit Overdraft Fees Are Back and Bigger Than Ever Remember the way banks used to slap debit-card users with outrageous bounce fees if you happened to operate too close to the edge? It was so crazy that a six-dollar burger could end up costing $45 or more if all you had in your account was $5.99. What irked me, as well as millions of people across the country, was the way banks al-lowed those debit overdrafts in the first place. Most people said they would rather have the transaction denied than have the purchase covered with the bank’s money as a short-term loan, and then get clobbered with outrageously high overdraft fees and penalties. In 2010, a new federal law required banks to get customers’ written permission before cover-ing debit-transaction overdrafts and the high penal-ties and fees that go with them. Without it, banks would have no choice but to deny that burger purchase or whatever else a customer tried to buy with a debit card if the amount exceeded the avail-able balance in the account. With the stroke of a pen, banks were out more than $24 million each year in overdraft fees. As you can imagine, this did not sit well with them and they immediately grouped behind closed doors to find a new way to tap their custom-ers’ pockets and reopen that lost revenue stream. I warned you that they would be exceedingly cre-ative in finding new loopholes and other ways to do this. And guess what? They’ve done just that. Banks got very sneaky about how they manipulated customers into “opting in” for overdraft protection. They created consumer confusion. In a recent survey by the Pew Charitable Trust, over one-third of those surveyed were un-aware that their bank even offered overdraft cover-age until they incurred a penalty for having used the service! And there’s a weird loophole in the law, too. It only requires that banks get written opt-in approv-al for transactions where a customer takes money from an ATM machine and day-to-day debit-card transactions. But if you write a check and overdraft your account, that is not covered by the law requir-ing written opt-in permission. I’m confused just
writing about it. All kinds of people in the survey believed if they didn’t do anything when presented with the opt-in form, their bank would charge them huge fees if they were to unknowingly commit a debit-overdraft. So they signed the forms thinking the bank could then not charge them. Bottom line, and this is what most people do not understand: The law does not forbid banks from charging unlimited overdraft fees on debit-card transactions. It simply requires the issuing bank to get the customer’s permission to do it. And it is clear that banks will stop at nothing to get customers to agree, even if that requires them to do it through intentional confusion, manipulation and out-and-out and deception. Longtime readers of this column know my feelings on debit cards. I wouldn’t own one myself. However, if you insist on keeping your card, please call right now to find out if you opted in for over-draft protection. If you did, please cancel it.

TO OUR CROSSWORD PUZZLE READERS:
Many of you have let us know in no uncertain terms of your displeasure with our duplication of the crossword puzzles in our July 1st and July 15th is-sues. We stand red-faced and guilty of the error and regret any problems it may have caused. Space doesn’t allow for an explanation of how this occurred, but suffice to say it was definitely not intentional and we have taken steps to prevent such an atrocity from happening again. We’ll be happy to send you both of the missing puzzles along with their solutions - pronto - if you’ll simply drop us an email at: [email protected] Thanks for your patience! --- Tidbits ed.

Splish Splash - Beyond Taking a Bath Summer and water go together like Bonnie and Clyde, Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra -- but without the tragedy. Or so we hope. Every year in America, more than 300 chil-dren drown in residential swimming pools, usually their own. Considering the great lengths most par-ents go to in order to keep their children safe, imag-ine what that number might be for dogs. A lot of dogs love the water; some famously: Labrador retrievers, Golden retrievers, poodles, Newfoundlands, Irish water spaniels, Portuguese water dogs, Chesapeake Bay retrievers and Cocker spaniels are among the most likely to dive right into the deep end. But even if your dog’s breed suggests he’s desperate for a dip, make sure he’s a water lover be-fore he’s waterlogged. Most dogs are natural swimmers, but that doesn’t give us license to toss a pup into a pool and cross our fingers. Some dogs are scared of the water and could panic. Panic quickly creates exhaustion, which leads to drowning. Other dogs are ambivalent about water, and such a rude introduction could eas-ily tip ambivalence toward fear. Teaching a dog water safety is a lot like teaching a child water safety. We would never leave young children in a pool unsupervised -- and that rule applies to dogs, as well. If your dog enjoys free rein of a yard that contains a swimming pool, secure access to the water. And teach him to swim. While some parents (and kids) might dis-agree, it is not a good idea to “teach” a child or dog to swim via the “sink or swim” method -- in which the parent shoves the kid (or dog) into the water and encourages them to figure it out fast. This cre-ates fear sans technique -- not to mention a bitter resentment that could come back to bite you, so to speak. When teaching a dog to swim, have a few tools at the ready: his leash, some dog floaties or a swim vest, a favorite toy or treat, and plenty of pa-tience. We want to ease him into the idea of water as something more than what he drinks -- and we want it to be fun!

Start with a child’s wading pool, and encour-age him to step into it using his leash. Don’t drag him. Use your voice to encourage him -- and his fa-vorite treats if necessary. Let him enjoy being in the water in a relaxed manner for a bit, and then lead him out of the pool. Repeat the process a few times until he gets in and out of the pool without hesitation. When he’s ready to upgrade to an actual swimming pool, employ the same gradual introduc-tion using his leash. Sit next to him on the steps of the pool. Use the floaties if your dog shows signs of panic or unease. Swim with him in the pool, your arms around him to keep him afloat and reassured of your presence. If he takes off like a fish, great! If he’s reticent, you’re right there to help. The most important part of teaching your dog to swim is teaching him how and where to get out of the water. If they don’t know how to exit the pool, even the best canine swimmers will tire and, if you aren’t watching (even for a minute), could drown. To teach your dog to exit the pool, use a high-value reward: his favorite ball if he’s a fetcher, his favorite treat if he’s food motivated. Use his leash to guide him from the open water to the pool steps, and reward him when he successfully exits the wa-ter. Do this many times over several days to ensure he knows where the steps are, how to use them and that good things happen when he goes to the steps to get out. And remember: Whenever surfing, boating, waterboarding, kayaking or canoeing, bring and use life vests for you, your kids, your passengers and your pooch. Woof!

Diet, Exercise, Love: One Man’s Key to Long Life In nine months, I turn 70. I often ask my-self, why am I so healthy? I feel so full of energy and able to do as much as or more than I did at age 40. My secret, I believe, is that I mostly eat right. I am overweight but not obese -- no matter how hard I try, this is the best I am going to do -- and I walk my dog briskly seven days a week for about 30 minutes. I am very hopeful about the future and the plenty of opportunities available to make work and days interesting and exciting, with the sense that I can continue to make a difference. I will never retire. Most importantly, I give love and respect to and receive it from the many individuals I work with daily and for whom I have great affection. I strive to be successful as a physician by genuinely and truly loving my patients. I work particularly hard on those who are the most difficult to love -- the ones who never get better, question your every suggestion,
are often rude and usually frustrated. These are the patients who are doctor shoppers and more than anyone else need someone who will never give up on them. No question, love is the key to happiness, health and longevity. It exists in many forms: in our faith, the love we have for our patients, students, workers and friends. Love is a powerful health tonic. And an important new study shows if you want to live long and live well, do not be a curmud-geon. People who are kind, loving, considerate, laugh a lot and are friendly to everyone are twice as likely to make it to the ripe old age of 100. Do not bottle up your feelings and if possible, do not speak ill of others. These personality traits may well be genetic -- the most powerful predictor of living to 100 is the ages at which your parents died. Being sweet, kind, good and living long may all be gifts inherited from your parents. But if you are difficult to get along with, seek help and try to change. Your life will be better and may be longer. Love people, love life, love your work, be a kind and good person and longevity is all but assured. But people with all these wonderful at-tributes can lose much and become lonely. And new research in the Archives of Internal Medicine documents the powerful negative effects of loneli-ness. For example, in a study of 45,000 people who had a heart attack, patients who lived alone were 24 percent more likely to die during a four-year follow-up period than those who lived with a spouse or a roommate. But living alone does not mean that you are lonely. Many people are perfectly content to be by themselves, love their own company and cope well. However, those individuals who reported that they were lonely were 46 percent more likely to die than those who did not say they were lonely. Lone-ly people are far more likely to be depressed, be sedentary, eat poorly and have poor health habits such as smoking or drinking. It is not surprising, therefore, that life expectancy is reduced. Any man in a long-standing, loving and intimate relationship has a 50 percent chance of living 10 years longer than a man living alone. Women benefit from such a relationship as well, but only by three years. Married men are more likely to have medical checkups, wear a seat belt, drink in moderation, be compliant with medica-tions, eat right and exercise. And if the woman dies before her husband, he has a 30 percent chance of death within a year. Studies also indicate that the happier the marriage, the more quickly the widower remar-ries. By contrast, many women state that they were married to the best partner and no other man could ever match up. My advice, however, is to remember that as we grow older, loneliness becomes a threat and companionship, or sometimes more, is definitely a tonic for a longer and better life.

Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks: Suspending Your Ben-efits Before They Even Start Q.Iamabouttoturn66yearsold.Iwasplanningtowaituntilage70tofileformySocialSecuritybenefitsbecauseIwantedtogetthe delayed retirement bonus youmention soofteninyourcolumn.ButIfoundanarticleonthewebthatencouragespeoplelikemetofileatage66andthenimmediatelysuspendmyben-efits.Thatway,ifIchangemymindbeforeage70, I cangobackandget retroactivebenefitsuntilage66.Whatdoyouknowaboutthis?
A. What I know is that you still can teach an old dog new tricks. I read the online article you referenced at MSN Money’s website. It provided a Social Security benefit tip that I had never thought of. I initially felt badly about this because I was sure that after 40 years in the Social Security business, there was little, if anything, I didn’t know about the program. But my guilt feelings were assuaged a bit when I contacted a colleague who still works for the agency -- one of the brightest Social Security scholars I know -- and he wasn’t aware of this practice either! In fact, the Social Security Administration has just issued a memorandum to all its field offices making them aware of this little-known procedure. Let me clarify that. The procedure isn’t new or unknown. It’s called “file and suspend.” I’ve dis-cussed this many times in past columns. You file for your Social Security benefits at age 66, and then im-mediately suspend those benefits. But the online ar-ticle points out a clever new reason to implement this tactic. Many of my readers may legitimately wonder why in the world a person would want to file for Social Security benefits (at age 66 or later) and then imme-diately suspend those benefits. In past columns, I’ve cited one big reason for doing so -- and that is so your spouse may claim So-cial Security benefits on your record while you delay benefits until age 70. Here is an example. Sid is 66 and still working. His projected So-cial Security benefit is $2,200 per month. His wife, Nancy, is 62. She was a stay-at-home mom who never worked and paid Social Security taxes. Sid does not want to take Social Security now because he plans to wait until age 70 to have the delayed retirement cred-its (a 32 percent bonus for holding off on retirement collections until 70) added to his Social Security pay-ment. However, the rules say Nancy cannot collect spousal benefits from Sid’s record until he has signed up for Social Security himself. But the “file and suspend” rule allows Sid to apply for Social Security retirement at age 66. Then Nancy would file for wife’s benefits on Sid’s record.
At age 62, she’d be due a reduced rate of about 30 percent of Sid’s benefit -- or $660 per month. Next, Sid asks SSA to suspend his benefits. They would be stopped. But Nancy’s would continue. At age 70, Sid would request SSA to “unsuspend” his own Social Security benefits. At that point, he would begin to collect about $2,900 per month in retirement benefits, including the delayed retirement credits. Unfortunately, the rules do not allow Nancy to share in those extra benefits. Her rate would remain at the $660 level. However, if Sid dies before she does, Nancy would get $2,900 in monthly widow’s benefits because a widow is allowed to get her deceased hus-band’s full benefit with the delayed retirement cred-its. But here is the newly cited reason you should consider filing for Social Security at age 66 and then immediately suspend those benefits: to protect your eligibility for back benefits if your circumstances change before you reach age 70. For example, if seri-ous health issues afflict you in your late 60s, you may decide it is no longer worth it to delay your Social Se-curity until age 70. You could then “unsuspend” your benefits and receive back pay benefits to age 66. (Of course, you would no longer be due the delayed re-tirement bonus.) Had you not filed for your Social Se-curity benefits (and then suspended them) at age 66, you would not have been able to claim the retroactive benefits once you changed your mind. And under this “file and suspend” plan, if you remain healthy or your circumstances don’t otherwise change, you simply “unsuspend” your benefits at age 70, at which point you will be credited with the full delayed retirement bonus. So almost everyone who plans to wait until 70 to collect Social Security benefits should consider this “file and suspend” strategy at age 66. I can think of only one situation where you wouldn’t want to “file and suspend” at age 66. And that is if you were plan-ning to collect spousal benefits between age 66 and 70. Here is a quick example of that strategy. Jack is 66 and is due $2,400 per month from Social Security. His wife, Jill, also is 66 and she is due $2,000 per month in her own Social Security. Jill applies for her Social Security benefits. And instead of filing for his own Social Security, Jack applies for husband’s benefits on Jill’s Social Security record. He would get $1,000 per month in husband’s benefits. (The couple would get total benefits of $3,000 per month.) Then at age 70, Jack would file for his own Social Security. At that point, he’d lose his $1,000 monthly spousal benefit, but would begin to receive almost $3,000 per month in Social Security retirement benefits, includ-ing “delayed retirement credits” of eight percent per year.
Jack wouldn’t want to employ the “file and suspend” strategy at age 66 because if he suspends his own benefits, he would also be required to sus-pend his husband’s benefits on Jill’s record. I know this is complicated stuff. I’ve revised my fact sheet, “When To Take Your Social Security Benefits,” to reflect the new information in this col-umn. You can request a digital copy by emailing me at [email protected].

Reverse Mortgages Under Fire Again Last year the AARP sued the Department of Housing and Urban Development because of tactics that were being used to scam seniors in reverse mortgages. Now Consumers Union, the group that brings us Consumer Reports magazine, is asking for stricter oversight of reverse mortgages. While reverse mortgages can be a lifesaver in certain situations, for most senior homeowners that par-ticular route is full of potential danger. Mortgage origination costs can be astro-nomical, draining away the equity. Scammers tie home-equity mortgages to other financial products. And, it learned, homeowners were found in default if they failed to pay property taxes or homeowners insurance. The biggest concern, however, is if only one spouse’s name is on the paperwork. You can’t take a reverse mortgage unless you’re age 62. If only one spouse is that age, then only that person’s name goes on the paperwork. If that older spouse dies, the younger spouse can be evicted from the home if he or she can’t come up with all the money to immediately pay off the mortgage. Consumers Union is asking for a number of safeguards: Ensure that the loan is suitable for bor-rowers and won’t put them at risk. Establish a fiduciary responsibility to act in the best interest of the homeowner. Outlaw deceptive marketing. Prohibit mingling a reverse mortgage with other financial products. Strengthen the pre-mortgage counseling that homeowners are required to have. And the big one: protect the non-borrow-ing spouse. TIP: Did you know you can get an online subscription to Consumer Reports? It’s much handier than trying to store back copies of the magazine. Visit consumerreports.org to decide if you’re interested. Call 1-800-333-0663 to subscribe instead of putting your credit-card number online.

Brain Bleeding From Aneurysm DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend ofmine,46yearsold,withawifeand twochil-dren,diedofastroke.Ialsoheardhediedofasubarachnoidhemorrhage.Aretheythesame?Hewasthepictureofhealthandwasdevotedtoexercise.Couldhisexerciseberesponsible?Hewasalmostafanaticaboutit.-- P.M.
ANSWER:A subarachnoid hemorrhage is a special kind of stroke. It’s due to the bursting of an aneurysm on one of the brain arteries. Aneurysms are small, balloon-like protrusions of a brain artery. They’re weak spots. “Subarachnoid” indicates that the artery is below one of the brain’s coverings -- the arachnoid. It’s the same place where cerebrospinal fluid circulates. A rush of a large volume of blood into this space compresses the brain and compro-mises its function. The increased pressure on the brain adds to the threat of death. Sometimes these weak bulges have been there from birth. In most instances, they arise dur-ing life. High blood pressure, smoking and excessive intake of alcohol contribute to their development. From 10 million to 15 million Americans have a ce-rebral aneurysm. Only a small percentage of these people die from it. At the onset of bleeding, the involved person complains of a terrible headache, the worst he or she has ever had. The person then becomes unrespon-sive and slips into a coma. This sort of stroke has a high fatality rate, around 50 percent. Answering your question about your friend’s devotion to exercise and its influence on his death is hard. Exercise did not cause the aneurysm to form. In unusual circumstances, it might have caused the aneurysm to break. Straining to lift a very heavy load while simultaneously holding the breath has been described as a possible reason for rupture of this kind of artery problem. The booklet on strokes describes the more common stroke causes and their treatment. People can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 902W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and ad-dress. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ANSWER: It’s an infection due to a new kind of germ, one that is totally protein. No other living thing, if this truly is living, is composed only of protein. The germ is called a prion. When it finds its way into the brain, it causes a rapidly progressive and profound dementia. The prion might have been there for decades, however, before signs appear. It is a truly rare disease that occurs in all parts of the world. Most of the time, it is fatal in a short time, about one year. No medicine stops its progress or improves its symptoms. Transmission of CJ disease to family members living under the same roof as the patient has not been described. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an or-der form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Marriage Commitment Ready? Q:Ourgranddaughterandherfiancehavebeendating fornearly three years.Theyarebothintheirearly30s.Theyareobviouslyinloveandhaveaverycloserelationship.Wefind it hard tounderstandwhy theyhavenotmarried.Whatmakesitsohardforyoungpeo-plethesedaystomakethiscommitment?
A: In today’s relationships the fear of di-vorce enters every couple’s minds because of a 50 percent failure rate and the possibility of becoming a single parent The lack of job opportunities and high cost of raising a family is also discouraging. If their relationship is to grow into a mar-riage, it will happen in due time. Be patient, be sup-portive and be happy they have found each other. They need to take time to learn more about each other’s habits, interests and values, and to measure the degree of their compatibility. Too many couples falsely believe that simply because they have romantically fallen in love the ob-vious next step is to set a wedding date. If more of these couples gave themselves more time to really get to know their intended spouse, more marriage disasters could be prevented. Remember, marriage is a nuts and bolts ar-rangement, and their lives are based on their com-mitment to each other. Hopefully, at the proper time and place, marriage may become their choice. They may even surprise everyone by eloping. And a loving and understanding family becomes an added bonus for them! * * *
Q:MywifeandIarebecomingmorechallengedtryingtorememberthingssuchasnames, birthdays, andotherimportantevents. It’s sometimes an embarrassment for both ofusandithasusalittleworried. Doyouhaveanysuggestionsthatwouldhelpusrememberthingsbetter?
A:It’s a fact that as we age we tend to for-get these things more often. Sometimes a medical checkup helps determine if it is a real problem. Of-ten, it turns out to be nothing serious. One helpful remedy is to keep a notepad and calendar located near your phone and jot down in-
formation as you receive it. Family visits, medical appointments, birthdays, invitations and even your thoughts become easier to review and remember. If you are not computer literate, consider the possibility of learning basic computer skills. This ability would allow you to maintain ongoing commu-nication with your family, the world and your friends. It also provides you with a certain amount of secu-rity, knowing that you could express your needs and wishes quickly should you need to do so. Today’s computers are quite intuitive and easy to use. By simply typing -- as you probably were taught in high school -- and punching in a few sim-ple instructions, it opens up a whole new world of communication. Instead of writing a letter or mak-ing a phone call, email can accomplish that job much more easily for you. It also allows you to receive a quick response from your loved ones -- and you have a record of everything that you can reference again. Forgetfulness and loneliness are things we all experience and every technique that can be used to lessen it proves to be a winner!

“It’s hard to feel romantic and attracted to someone who never seems to listen. But that’s how someone with untreated hearing loss often comes across.” says Dr. Fred Piercy, a couples therapist in Blacksburg,Virginia. His wife Susan
is an audiologist who wears a hearing aid.

● On July 28, 1868, following its ratifica-tion by the necessary three-quarters of U.S. states, the 14th Amendment, guaranteeing black Americans citizenship and all its privi-leges, is officially adopted into the U.S. Con-stitution.
● On July 24, 1911, American arche-ologist Hiram Bingham gets his first look at Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca settlement in Peru. Machu Picchu is believed to have been a summer retreat for Inca leaders, whose civilization was wiped out by Spanish invaders in the 16th century. The site itself stretches an impressive 5 miles.
● On July 26, 1931, a swarm of grasshop-pers descends on crops throughout Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, devastating millions of acres. The swarm was said to be so thick that it blocked out the sun and that grasshoppers could be could shoveled with a scoop. Cornstalks were eaten to the ground and fields left completely denuded.
● On July 27, 1943, Joseph Stalin, pre-mier and dictator of the Soviet Union, issues Order No. 227, which came to be known as the “Not one step backward” order, in light of German advances into Russian territory. The order declared, “Panic makers and cow-ards must be liquidated on the spot. Not one step backward without orders from higher headquarters!”
● On July 29, 1967, a fire on the USS For-restal stationed off the coast of Vietnam kills 134 service members, injures hundreds and destroys 20 planes. The deadly fire on the U.S. Navy carrier began with the accidental launch of a F-4 Phantom jet rocket, which hit a parked A-4 Skyhawk jet.
● On July 23, 1976, members of the American Legion arrive in Philadelphia to celebrate the bicentennial of U.S. indepen-dence. Soon after returning home, many began suffering from a mysterious form of pneumonia, which would become known as Legionnaires’ disease. The final tally was 221 cases, including 34 deaths.
● On July 25, 1985, Rock Hudson, Hol-lywood leading man, announces through a press release that he is suffering from ac-quired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Hudson was the first major celebrity to go public with such a diagnosis.

Being First There is a peculiar desire in all of us to be first in something, and there are very few activities we can engage in that exemplify that characteristic more than in sports or journalism. (Even politicians don’t want to win all the time ... there are some jobs you just don’t want.) Through the centuries, numerous maxims have been handed down regarding this unceasing need to be first. “First come, first served,” “There can only be one,” “If you’re not the lead dog, the view never changes,” are but a few that immediately come to mind. Often, being first is associated with winning. “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” That comment, of course, gets challenged by many deep thinkers who would like to see people evolve a little bit. In many situations, the drive to be first can lead to lots of collateral damage, such as a stampede. A few weeks ago, the mediaverse was all atwitter when CNN announced, wrongly, that the federal healthcare bill had been repealed by the U.S. States Supreme Court when, in fact, it did just the opposite. Instead of being first with the news, CNN lost credibility and are last in the cable news game. Being second really has little worth in our society. Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon. Who was the second guy? But it’s better to be right than first in something. If Neil Arm-strong and the moon crew were off on their calcula-tions by just a fraction, they would have ended up hurtling into space, lost forever. Charles Lindbergh became the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and he did it without a front windshield (the term “flying blind” ap-plies here). Amelia Earhart attempted to fly around the world, and we all know how that ended ... uhh, actually, we don’t. In June we watched Nik Wallenda walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Some thought he was the first to do so, but we know he was not. Popular theory has Emile Gravelet doing the stunt first in 1859, but nobody can really be sure. What we do know is that he was the first (and only) tightrope walker to cook an omelet on a wheelbar-row filled with hot stones and then lower the frying pan to passengers floating on the “Maid of the Mist” below him. The first person to win a marathon was a Greek soldier, but it wasn’t a game for him ... he was delivering a message from the battlefield of Mara-thon to Athens -- 26.2 miles. Upon delivery, legend has it, he died. So remember, when you’re breathing your last breath, make sure you can say that whatever it was that drove you in life, it was worth it in the end.

The Smasher and the Simply Smashing
Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.
As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.
For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.
Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.
And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations
during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.
But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.
Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.
While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”
Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

A:Homer Laughlin China Co. made your dinnerware set. They have been in business in East Liverpool, Ohio, since 1877 and have manufactur-ing plants in several cities. “Empress” is the name of the shape of your dishes and was introduced around 1900. This shape was decorated with a variety of narrow bands against a white background. A line of flatware was designed to specifically accompany “Empress” dishes. Sears Roebuck and Co. catalogs sold “Empress” sets beginning around 1919. The numbers and letter “9 -- 5 --N” show the set was made in September 1915 at Laughlin’s Plant N. Vintage dinnerware sets can be difficult to sell. Having said that, your set is probably worth $200 to $400.

A:Century of Progress World’s Fair mem-orabilia is collectible. There were several different style rings sold at the fair, and many were silver over brass. Your ring would probably be worth $25 to $50. * * *

A: Sterling China was founded in Sebring, Ohio, in 1887. The name was changed to Sebring China shortly after they opened. They are no longer in business, having closed in the late 1940s.Your iron-stone plates are part of a set that was designed to serve fish and often included a serving platter and a sauce dish. Similar plates can be seen selling on the In-ternet and in antiques shops around $50 each.

Stiff Your Chips with a Leaning Shaft
The PGA Tour average for greens hit in regulation is62%. Meaning that the best players in the world aregoing to be chipping 6 to 7 times in a round. If you arean 18 handicap, you might find yourself chipping onpractically every hole, so chipping it close will help youhave shorter putts.Chipping is nothing more than the extension of aputting stroke. It is very important to maintain theangles that you set up at address throughout theswing. The key to good chipping is to first andforemost lean the shaft towards the target creating astraight line going up the leading arm and thenmaintaining that angle throughout the swing.Notice in the pictures to the right that I have the shaftangle matching my left arm (the red lines). As I makemy back swing I am able to maintain that angle. In theforward swing it is going to be key to have the right footpush off and turn the right hip / knee through to givethe shaft angle some support for controlling the contactand direction of the ball. The number one chipping fault that I see in golfers isthat they do not provide enough support from the lowerbody and they end up breaking the shaft angle downby flipping with the wrist. If you want to shoot lower scores than you will get outand work on your chipping. Better chipping will leaveyou shorter putts for fewer strokes taken on the green.
