Teacher’s day: Teacher's Day is celebrated

on the 31st of October to acknowledge the

challenges, hardships, and the special role

that teachers play in our lives. On Thursday,

we recognised and celebrated the amazing

work of our wonderful teachers as it is

World Teacher’s Day. Ulong school is

incredibly fortunate and proud of our

teachers like Mrs Slaviero & Mrs Partridge.

These 2 lovely teachers go above and

beyond to ensure each student is getting

quality of education and is treated fairly. I

cannot talk highly enough of the little team

that we have this fabulous school .

Hats: As the weather is warming up, I

humbly request all parents to make sure

that their child brings a school hat to school.

In Australia, schools and day cares have a

strict “no hat, no play” policy, meaning

children cannot go outside to play unless

they've slapped on a hat (a wide brim or

    legionnaire hat) .

    Kindergarten 2021 Enrolment Forms: All

    incoming Kindergarten students for 2021

need to have submitted an enrolment form

before they can come to orientation. We

have sent enrolment forms home with

version which can be found on the Ulong

    Public School’s webpage under the

    enrolment tab.

Spare clothes and undergarments: I would

also like to request parents to please send in

any old school uniform and an extra change

of undergarments in their child’s bag, just in

case they have an accident at school.

Orara High School Transition Update: The

Department of Education has given the go

ahead for High School Transition events to

    proceed. Therefore, Year 6 students

transitioning to Orara High School will be on

    Tuesday 1 December.

Book Week: A huge thank you to everyone

for participating in last week’s Book Parade.

Everyone looked amazing in their outfits. We

hoped you all enjoyed the videos of the

parade. Hopefully everyone will be back for

    an amazing 2021 parade.

Strategic Improvement Plan: In the last few

weeks the school has been developing a

Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP). A strategic

Improvement Plan is a working document

that details the steps our school will take to

    improve learning outcomes and the

achievement and growth of all students. To

    ensure continuous improvement, the

    Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP) reflects

where our school is at and how it will further

improve learning, teaching and leading. Over

the past few months, we have gathered

several sources of data and completed a

    situational analysis to critically understand

where we are currently at in our learning

journey and what areas we need to focus on

for the next few years. In the coming weeks, I

am going to phone parents to gather their

thoughts on areas the school can improve on

and discuss our three Strategic Directions for

2021 - 2024. The surveys conducted last term

were very positive, however, we will like to

see more parent involvement in their child’s

learning and collaborating with the teachers

    to further improve student academic

    achievement, attendance and wellbeing.

Therefore, our three Strategic Directions we

will be focusing in our school plan for 2021 -

    2024 will be:

    1. Student Growth and Attainment: This

target is a state-wide target set by the

    NSW Education Department.

    2. Wellbeing (Connect, Succeed, Thrive).

    3. Collaborating and Connecting with

    Community.

  • 1. Student Growth:

We analysed our Check-In assessments in

Years 3 and 5 and have seen excellent

student growth. What is Student growth:

Student Growth is how much academic

progress a student has made between two

points in time. For example, this could be

from the start of the year to the end of the

year. As the term is coming to an end, you

will receive end of the year SBSR reports that

will inform student achievements and the

areas of concerns that we collaboratively

need to focus on to improve for next year.

We will also be holding parent teacher

meetings on the phone to discuss your child’s

short and long-term goals for 2021.

    2. Wellbeing:

PBL: This week we are working on Personal

Best. Students are encouraged to give their

best and try hard to their best ability. This

    week’s Muluny winners were:

Lillee, Joey, Jovi, Thomas and Leah.

Attendance: Our student attendance goal for

2020 is 90% or above for all students.

    The Importance of Attending School

Education for your child is important and

regular attendance at school is essential for

your child to achieve their educational best

and increase their career and life options.

NSW public schools work in partnership with

parents to encourage and support regular

attendance of children and young people.

When your child attends school every day,

learning becomes easier, and your child will

build and maintain friendships with other

    children.

What if my child has to be away from

    school?

On occasion, your child may need to be

absent from school. Justified reasons for

    student absences may include:

    • being sick, or having an infectious

    disease

    • having an unavoidable medical

    appointment

    • being required to attend a recognised

    religious holiday

    • exceptional or urgent family

    circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)

Following an absence from school you must

ensure that within seven days you provide

your child’s school with a verbal or written

explanation for the absence. However, if the

school has not received an explanation from

you within two days, the school will contact

    you to discuss the absence.

explanation that you have provided if they do

not believe the absence is in the best interest

of your child. In these circumstances, your

child’s absence would be recorded as

unjustified. When this happens, the Principal

will discuss their decision with you and the

    reasons why.

Principals may request medical certificates or

other documentation when frequent or long-

term absences are explained as being due to

illness. Principals may also seek parental

permission to speak with medical specialists

    to obtain information to collaboratively

develop a health care plan to support your

child. If the request is denied, the Principal

can record the absences as unjustified.

Absences are recorded on Student Reports

and students will be recognised for 100%

attendance and will receive an attendance

    award and a prize.

    3. Collaborating And Connecting With

    Community:

The Department of Education recognises that

    working collaboratively with students and

their families is the best way to support

student learning and regular attendance of

students at school. This enables us to

achieve the desired learning outcomes. We

look forward to working in partnership with

you to support your child to fulfil their life

    opportunities.

    Community day: Ulong Public School

students will be participating in the children’s

activities being provided by StandBy at the

Ulong Community Hall on Tuesday 3

    November.

Bushfire Education Workshop: On Friday 13

November, the students will be participating

in a Bushfire Education Workshop at Ulong

Public School. A representative from the RFS,

Jamie Bertram will be providing a talk on

    bushfire recovery and wildlife preservation.

    The Prosper Coffs Harbour volunteer

committee has donated 5 native fauna

nesting boxes and paint to the school and

their representatives will be here to help our

students construct and paint these on the

    day.

    Congratulations: Congratulations to Thomas

and Leah whose artwork has been selected

for the “Creative Recovery Projects: The

    Bushfires”, organised by the

Council’s Regional Gallery and Museum as

part of their bushfire recovery initiatives.

On Thursday 12 November, we will be going

  • on an excursion to the Culture Hub to see the

exhibition and to the Botanical Gardens to

    learn about life cycles

    Have a great week.

Healthy Habits: During Term four all

students have been learning about a Healthy

Habits unit that promotes nutrition, safety,

    hygiene, emotions, wellbeing and positive

    relationship themes from the Health

Syllabus. We are trying new fruits, learning

    about different sports, encouraging the

wearing of hats and helmets at school and

also promoting kind and helpful actions

towards others. We will be having a Secret

Santa challenge at the end of the term,

where children will make small gifts and

secret notes to give their partners. We are

hoping to help the students to self-manage

their health and safety and to help them to

build Healthy Habits throughout the unit.
