F lat track races have never been more exciting than the battle for the flag that played out last night in the amphitheater at the Legendary Buffalo Chip. In an area that winds its way through what doubles as a concert venue at night, AFT racers navigated their way through the purpose-built track that affords race fans an intimate experience like no other track in the world. e big Twins as well as the Singles class racers flew through the air, hit the s-curves and screamed down the straightaway as elated attendees, sepa- rated from the track by hay bales, cheered on their favorite gladiator. In the end, it was a photo-finish wheelie that came with a hard-fought 0.201-second victory! Presented by Indian Motorcycles, the American Flat Track showdown was an intense competition that ultimately boiled down to two teammates staring down the finish line together. Racer number 95, JD Beach, tore past his teammate, Jake John- son (#5), at the last possible second to steal the win in last night’s wild premiere class show down. Johnson appeared to have back-to-back wins in the bag after grabbing the hole shot and breaking free at the front while a four-rider battle for second was tak- ing place behind him that involved Jarod Vanderkooi (#20 on an H-D), Jared Mees (#1 on an Indian) and Bronson Bauman (#37 Indian) with Beach, on a Yamaha, trailing the pack. Chances to pass were limited as rid- ers jammed through the narrows, but Vanderkooi, in first, ran wide and fell back three positions, which Beach took advan- tage of. Passing Bauman, Beach made an aggressive bid to pressure Mees for sec- ond place, which paid off. In the last pos- sible second Beach heard Johnson’s engine stumble and he laid on the throttle, came up off his front wheel and made a dramatic pass across the finish line with a mere 0.201 seconds ahead. amazing race. I came from like fifth and caught him, but we only had a lap to go. I was trying to find a way by him but there just wasn’t any room. Coming out of the last turn, I heard his bike blubber, so I knew I was hooked up and going. It’s awesome to get a win, but to get a win

like that — especially with Jake because he’s such a good guy — it feels good but it doesn’t.

So, in the end, it wasn’t either of the life-long rivals, Harley-Davidson nor Indian Motorcycles, that claimed vic-tory out at the Buffalo Chip, but rather

a Yamaha ridden by Beach in the AFT Twins class and a KTM ridden by Ryan Sipes in the Singles class that took the win. And the entire Davidson family was right there to lend their support to the AFT racers of the Buffalo Chips TT, sponsored by Indian Motorcycles.

This is the last night to watch the hugely popular, all male HUNKS Show that will take over the Buf-

falo Chip’s Kini-son Stage! These hard-bodies enter-tained millions of ladies by working their way around in a variety of pulse-quickening outfits. Some of the sexiest men alive dance, sing and strip out of uniforms, fireman gear and cowboy out-fits that are guaranteed to raise your blood

pressure. Though FREE for those with a wrist-

band, in-the-know gals get in on the lim-ited number of $20 VIP seats so they can be closer to the heat, where the show turns into an interactive audience partici-pation experience that is guaranteed to make you blush. Bring your girl-

friends and be early! The show kicks off at 7:45 p.m., don’t be late!

The Buffalo Chip’s ubiquitous Rod “Woody” Wood-ruff loves to meet campers. He turns up everywhere at the Chip, so keep your eyes peeled for his smiling face and say hello. Also look for Woody in the pages of the Sturgis Rider Daily to win Chip merch. Each day there’s a differ-ent Woody caricature hidden in a photo of an event or loca-tion he especially recommends. The first three readers who report their find to the Chamber of Commerce/Rally Info Center at the Chip CrossRoads win a prize bag. And don’t forget to notice where Woody is hiding out, because that’s definitely the place to be each day.

Today’s the day to join in and experience the signature “Real Riders, Real Stories and Real

Passion” the Biker Belles have been bring-ing to the riding community for over a decade. Whether you’re a rider, builder, or passenger, the Belles welcomes all. This year, Biker Belles kicks off their multi-layered celebrations with the Biker Belles Morning Ride.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. TODAY, August 6, at The Lodge at Deadwood, then enjoy the winding trails of the scenic Highway 385 through Nemo to Vanocker Canyon to end at the Buffalo Chip Crossroads. If you want to join in on the celebrations but can’t make it to

the Morning Ride, head on up to the CrossRoads at 8:30 a.m. for a separate registration.

The Wild Gypsy Tour, an all-women’s campout within the Buffalo Chip, is back at Biker Belles Ride again this year to join forces and bring you the FREE, three-class, Women & Wheels Bike Show. You can ride in or register ahead of time at the CrossRoads. Come see the magnificent female-owned bikes, learn the history of both bike and rider, and share your passion with fellow show-goers.

This moto-centric event is an oppor-tunity to connect with women who are shaping the motorcycle industry, driv-

ing change and breaking long-held traditions, so join in the new insight on the world of women bikers during a fantastic discussion with this year’s special guests and pan-elists.

For the 2019 symposium, Biker Belles brings you the theme “Forward Motion,” with returning speakers Jessi Combs and Cris Sommer Simmons. Past panelist, Mar-ilyn Stemp, will moderate the symposium, which will include an array of special guests for a forum and discus-sion including Alisa Clickenger, Savannah Rose, Diva Amy Skaling, Gloria Struck, Valerie Thompson, Staci Wilt, Gina Woods, and Kelly Yazdi.

Also this year, the Comfort Zone by Team Diva will have new beauty products, fashion, and riding gear made specifically for women riders. A catered lunch by Bonafide Food is also included. So come on out and join in the yearly celebration of women riders and the impact we make with Biker Belles.

Terri “T” Collier

Terri “T” Collier is a truly authen-tic, down-to-earth biker celebrating her 50th year of riding.

Along the way, she’s grown to know and love the curving roads of Arkansas, become a mentor and mentee to fantas-tic women riders, and participated in the record-breaking Women’s Freedom Ride.

T believes strongly in the free spirit of the biker, and that “women have never stopped looking forward in the motor-cycle industry.”

She’s someone to look up to, both as an inspiring woman, and as an authen-tic biker.

SRD: How and when you did you learn to ride?

T: This year I’m celebrating my 50th year of riding! My dad bought me my first bike when I was five. It was a pull string and I had to stand on a cement block to be tall enough to start it. Both my dad and grandpa rode, so they encouraged me to ride.

SRD: Favorite ride you’ve done?T: My most memorable ride is a

Sturgis story. I’ve been going to Sturgis for 9 years, and probably 6 years ago I rode up with a group called Women in the Wind. It was a busy week, I was exhausted by the end, and rode 870 miles home alone. About an hour from

RIdINg WIth dIgNItyTerri “T” Collier

A Word from Assistant Editor Madeline Woodruff

This year, I was inspired to seek out and inter-view several incredible women bikers who’ve been out on the long and winding roads worldwide, kicking up dust on the racetracks, making history, and making a name for female bikers wherever they go. I wanted to celebrate them, these fearless women, and what they bring to the epics of motor-cycling. I wasn’t disappointed. I’m forever inspired by these ladies on two wheels, and I’m excited to present this year’s Sturgis Rider Daily special, Inspiring Women Riders!

home, in Oklahoma, I passed these two guys with amazing bikes, fully loaded. It was midnight, full moon, about 80 degrees, and I waved as I passed them. A few miles ahead there was a toll and I paid it for them when I got there. That’s what Sturgis is about: the people you meet.

SRD: What challenges have you faced as a woman rider?

T: As many women riders are out there now and as quickly as the market is growing, the indus-try is still having a hard time accepting it. We know our rides and we know our bikes. Talk to us. If I go into a dealership and there’s a man with me, I’ll walk up to the salesperson and say what I need, and they start talking to the man next to me who isn’t there to pick my bike or choose the part I need at all. It’s challenging, and it makes me feel disrespected.

I don’t want women to ride bikes just to make a bold state-ment. I want women to ride and work to be accepted as a woman on a bike. You can be a lady and ride. You don’t have to be tough. You

don’t have to prove anything to the world, just be a good rider.

SRD: You work with and partici-pate in the Women’s Freedom Ride, tell us about that.

T: We had 762 women that rode 7.5 miles together. We broke the North American record. The world record is 1,184 in the UK, so we’re planning on trying again next year for that title.

I truly believe that since women began riding, before I was even around, that we have never stopped looking forward in the motorcycle industry.

I’m very proud of the fact that women have allowed themselves to become great riders. They’ve done it with dignity. We’ve been asked the stupid questions, faced the challenges, and it hasn’t been easy, but we’ve been able to break the barriers.

We’ll always be out there, breaking the barriers.

Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame 2019 Inductees will be cel-ebrated during the Sturgis Motorcy-

cle Hall of Fame breakfast on Wednesday, August 7, the Deadwood Lodge in Dead-wood, S.D.

One could say that the inductees all exhibit common characteristics of con-stancy, self-confidence and humility all

across the board. Here is the panel of exemplary personalities:

Jill Parham Jill Parham had no need to stand behind

her husband John as he was lauded dur-ing his 2006 induction; she was a full part-ner in the success of J & P Cycles and the National Motorcycle Museum. Now it’s

her turn for recognition.

Frank FritzAs his “American Pickers” partner basked

in the limelight, Frank Fritz applied his knowledge of motorcycling with dignity and dependability. He’s finally being hon-ored for a lifetime of riding and wrenching — and it’s well deserved.

Danny FitzmauriceYou’d never know that Danny Fitzmaurice was among

the nation’s premiere high-performance specialists; his quiet demeanor defies it. But since 1981, R&D on the drag strip and the prominence of Zipper’s Performance Products have proven it.

Ron Finch

Artist, sculptor and bike builder Ron Finch is known for his mastery of color and design in paint. Describe it? No, you simply have to see Finch’s remarkable work for yourself.

Ron PaughFor 50 years Ron Paugh has gone into the shop and bent pipe. Why? Because it’s what he likes to do. His

company, Paughco, has thrived in the best and worst of times. Now we honor his perseverance.

Terry Rymer

Terry Rymer’s steadfast enthusiasm for the sport is on display every day at Black Hills Harley-Davidson, supporting racing, new rider initiatives and community involvement. He leads by example.

Freedom Fighter: Vince Consiglio

As a helmet-wearing daily rider, Vince Consiglio and ABATE of Michigan fought mandatory helmet laws for 35 years – and changed them. “Let those who ride decide.”

Lifetime Achievement: Gloria Struck

Gloria Struck has authenticity and staying power, in spades. Her riding experiences and lifetime of con-nections mark her as one of motorcycling’s national treasures.

Pappy Hoel Award:

Lonnie Isam, Jr.Lonnie Isam, Jr. earned the right to be remembered

through his dedication to antique motorcycles and the manifestation of his riding passion, The Motor-cycle Cannonball Ride. He rides on in the minds and hearts of every Cannonball team and enthusiasts everywhere.

By all standards, it could be said that the FXR and Dyna models are a very appreci-

ated breed from the Harley-David-son stable. For those who appre-ciate the bikes, the great display sprawled out across the Cross-Roads blacktop was quite impres-sive. Equally impressive was the donation made to the LifeScape of SD, formerly known as Children’s Care Hospital and School.

Doing good comes with feeling good, even when things don’t always go as planned, but generous bikers always find a way to turn things around. Riders got pretty soggy during the Carey Hart Good Ride, but that certainly didn’t

dampen spirits! Riders arrived at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads to a nice lunch, warm smiles, a great stunt show and an afternoon of fun stuff, all while raising money for America’s Veterans. How can that be anything but good?
