Bike Shows …Stephanie Komro whose father, its builder, passed away just last week. She saw to his wishes, entered the trike and was honored to see it win double.

Meanwhile the Sportster Show-down raged in the Chip Gardens, with fun, food, music and awards. This one’s always cool.

Wednesday dawned on the Sexi-est Bagger show with bling to spare and Thursday exploded with one of the largest Rat’s Hole Custom Shows ever for their 30th anniver-sary in Sturgis. Mega radical cus-toms always vie at Rat’s Hole, as builders strive to win a coveted bronze rat trophy.

That capped off a wicked week of custom showcases for 2018. This is one roster that can’t be rivaled.

The Chip is the heart of rally week and for red blooded race fans, there’s an even better reason to make a trip to the Chip: the Supermoto USA AMA Vet National Championships.

“Supermoto riders are well rounded. They’re adept at a vari-ety of disciplines and their skill range is under-rated,” said Brok McAllister the Series Director. These riders must be proficient on pavement, in the dirt and on a motocross course. That’s what makes this kind of racing so exciting!

The one-off, specially con-structed track loops around the Buffalo Chip Field

of Flags with 3 jumps and 9 corners to keep the action kicking. It runs about .65-mile and is 70% dirt. Attendance is free for anyone who cares to sidle up to the action today and tomorrow, august 10th and 11th, when qualifying kicks off just after lunch each day.

There’s a total $10,000 purse up for grabs and this event crowns champions in 3 National divisions. There are Pro Invitational and Open Amateur divisions, too. “We have all the heavy hitters in our sport here for this,” said McAllister.

Like a long island iced tea on high octane, supermoto is a perfect blend of ingredi-ents that result in an amaz-

ing experience. We’ll see you there!

Doggonnit! It was only a few days ago I welcomed you back, saying it had been like no time had passed since you’d left. Now I watch you prepar-ing for your departure and, while I know you must, we’re sad to see you go. It has been our privilege and honor that you chose to share another joy-ous vacation time with us, renewing our friendships.

Please watch for the 2018 summary on the BuffaloChip.com home page. Several of you requested I get off my duff and do one this year, and I will. Know, however, I’m really stoked about the plans for all that will be new in 2019. PLUS, we’ll very soon begin making our first and very exciting 2019 concert announcement. Stay tuned to the Chip’s social media.

And so, my friends, it’s with genuine heartfelt sincerity that I say, on behalf of the entire Buffalo Chip staff, Happy Trails to you until we meet again. Drive carefully on your return trip. Have a wonderful year with other friends and family. And then bring those smilin’ faces right back here next year and tell us all about it. Until then, and as always, please

Not everyone knows that the Buf-falo Chip is named after Jim “Buffalo Chips” White, a U.S. Cavalry scout and loyal follower of Buffalo Bill Cody. So it’s in the spirit of Buffalo Chips, that we acknowledge the indomitable friends of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Campground, the happy campers who return year after year, bring their friends, and create a palpable family reunion ambience. Some say there’s something special in the air at the Chip, others say it’s in the dirt. We believe it’s in the hearts and souls of the people who’ve become Chip Family. And, as Cody appreciated White, we salute them!

SRD: When was your first journey to the Buffalo Chip?

e: In 2004 we pulled into Fenske and immedi-ately walked over to a van with people and intro-duced ourselves. More people came over and we invited them in. So many people came that by the end of the week we were planning for next year! That’s how the party tent began. People bring snacks and liquor, everyone shares, and there’s no problems.

SRD: Which year has been your most memorable?e: It was 2009, the year of the hail storm. It

was also the year Steven Tyler fell off the stage. We were right there with our elbows on the stage so we saw everything! Joe Perry was having audio troubles, and Steven was attempting to distract the crowd on the catwalk, so he attempted a spin and ended up falling. We were front page for that.

SRD: Do you ride? If so, which Black Hills ride is your favorite?

K: I have a 100th Anniversary Heritage Soft-tail. We go everywhere we can while we’re there. Sometimes we’ll take off for a couple of days before the party gets started. Our favorite ride is Keystone up to Mt. Rushmore. We go in through Custer State Park and Iron Mountain Road and back down into Keystone with a stop at Ruby’s.

e: We do Crazy Horse and people always ask why we do that ride every year. I never get tired of Mt. Rushmore. It’s a wonder to ride the Black Hills, and to be an American.

SRD: What’s it like, camping at the Buffalo Chip?

e: We’re known for being Buffalo Chip Ambassadors. We take in new campers and show them the ropes, make them feel more comfort-able.

K: It’s always been the best party anywhere.e: We refuse to bring our RV, but we do some

glam camping. When the Chip started, it was all about friends and camping and campfires. We would rather keep in the spirit of the old Sturgis Rally. That’s why we tent camp. Little by little everyone around us is starting to bring RV’s, but to each their own.

SRD: What does the Chip mean to you? e: One year, Ken’s sister was very ill. We had

just arrived and set up when we got the news that she’d passed away. We were going to leave, but Ken said his sister would have wanted us to stay. So we left all our personal belongings for our friends to watch over while we were gone for three or four days, and they protected it like it was theirs. That’s why the Chip is so special to us. It’s unique. When we go back, it’s a family reunion.

We absolutely love the Buffalo Chip. We wouldn’t stay anywhere else. We could, but we choose the Chip year after year because of the people there. We adore everyone, and people go out of their way to help us feel welcome there. We love it.

The Wild Gypsy Tour kicked off with a wel-come from Woody on Friday, August 3rd and this group of spirited women riders never looked back.

The women-only campout united women from around the world as they rode to iconic Black Hills landmarks, networked, and yes, partied. They built their own community within the fabulous, much

larger community of the Buffalo Chip benefitting from advantages no other women’s riding event can tout. Said WGT founder, Kelly Yazdi, “WGT is on its way to being a milestone event in women’s moto culture, and we’ve found a home at the Buf-falo Chip.”

Wanna rock your gypsy soul? Check out the website and be here next year: wildgypsytour.com.

Best Deals on 2019 are now!

The best way to seal the deal on next year’s rally is to book your space on the way out this year. Prices will never be better and you’ll get prime campsite location selection. Where’s Woody? He’s at the box office, getting set for your return in 2019 to the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, the premiere Sturgis Rally destination, serving campers for more than 37 years.

The Former H-D Factory Team rider is a 3-time AMA Grand National Champion, in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He wraps up a 25-year long racing career this season, as a privateer on an Indian FTR750. And he sounds really happy!

SRD: What’s different about being a privateer instead of a factory rider?

KcJ: The factory Indian and H-D teams have budgets way bigger than any privateer. But for me, being a privateer is better. You don’t have all the drama and hype. All I need is a mechanic, a good bike and myself—and I’m good.

SRD: And you can make a living?KcJ: As a privateer you can work all winter for

sponsors. I’m doing just as good if not better than when I was riding for the (H-D) factory.

SRD: Is that because sponsors already know you?KcJ: Yes but it doesn’t matter who you are.

Even though I’ve accomplished a lot it’s still tough to sell them on our sport, at least until the last few years. Now with TV packages and things like the X-Games, that really helps get sponsors on board.

SRD: So the AFT organization has helped?KcJ: AFT is doing an amazing job. There’s still

stuff to be addressed; some of the venues are nice for the fans but the tracks are not so good for rid-ers. It’s hard to get both.

SRD: You’re riding the Indian FTR750 now, right?

KcJ: Probably over half the field is on Indian FTRs now. I rode the Harley XG last year and I figured, if you can’t beat ‘em, might as well join

‘em. The FTR is proven right out of the box because they listened to the people who were and are involved in flat track.

SRD: So it’s different from last year, when you were an H-D Factory rider?

KcJ: Last year was pretty tough for me, men-tally tough and draining. You start doubting your-self.

SRD: Maybe where Sammy Halbert is now?KcJ: We’ve all been there. He’s a good rider,

he wants to win. Obviously it’s not the rider. It’s a gamble developing a new motorcycle.

SRD: As a pro, what do you think of the Super Hooligans?

KcJ: At first I thought it was gonna be a crash fest, but I was totally wrong. They showcase flat-track very well. It’s good to have new people watch-ing and coming to our events. We need more than our diehard dirt track fans and Hooligan races get people interested who might not be.

SRD: How was racing at the Chip last year?KcJ: It was a pretty cool atmosphere, way dif-

ferent than any other. The fans are right on the racetrack with us, so close they can almost touch you as you go by. It was amazing, what they did to accommodate us.

SRD: Did you hear that Cory Texter called you the “Tom Brady of flattrack?”

KcJ: (laughing) Ah, Cory! He’s a good kid. I knew his dad and they helped me out quite a bit when I was coming up. As for the comment, I’m good with it!

    Strider rider CuStomSTerrific and tiny

If you haven’t seen these tiny, fabulous custom Strider bikes, you need to. They’re based on 12” Strider balance bikes and each one is a vision of the particular custom bike builder who created it.

The tiny customs are an initiative of the Flying Piston Charity Breakfast, an event that gathers talented builders from the Chip’s Motorcycles As Art exhibition together with fans and friends on the first Sunday of Rally week at the CrossRoads. The Breakfast benefits Black Hills area tech ed scholarships and Motorcycle Missions.

In a new collaboration with Strider Bikes, makers of balance bikes that inspire kids to ride, stock Striders were sent to select builders who worked their magic, as the pictures show. After the Sturgis Rally, the bikes will travel to designated motorcycle events and Strider races nationwide, then be auctioned before the 2019 class is revealed.

Builders include: Rick Fairless, Paul Yaffe, Jody Perewitz, Pat Patterson, Kirk Taylor, Bryan Fuller and Motorcycle Missions. Loaded Gun’s Kevin Dunworth and his twin six-year-old

daughters customized and donated one of their Striders, too, which was a featured item at the Breakfast auction this year.

The Flying Piston Builders Breakfast is made possible by presenting sponsor Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys along with Lincoln Elec-tric, Kirsh Helmets, Steve Reed/Steve’s Garage, and Strider. See the strider Rider Custom at the CrossRoads Big Engine Bar through Rally’s end.

Having the RSD Super Hooligans at the Chip is a WFO blast! Their energy, their zany shenanigans, their outlaw attitude: it all transmits unpretentious moto fun that’s off the hook.

When these guys meet up, you can count on spirited riding and intense competition. Why? Because bragging rights are at stake and street cred is in the balance. Super Hooligan racing gets the nod for kickstarting the racing renaissance a few years back and thanks to input from Indian Motor-cycle, it has stayed true to its roots.

They don’t call it “The Greatest Show on Dirt” for nothing!

If you can make your own damn fun with rudimentary elements, Camp Zero is for you. An old barn turned into a bar, some planks and blocks, a couple of tents and a few dozen sympatico friends turned a pasture into a party this week at the inaugural Camp Zero. Turning a pasture into a party? Hmmm, that’s’ sort of how the Buffalo Chip, a.k.a. The Best Party Anywhere™, got started. So does this make Camp Zero “The Best Party… Nowhere?

Rock and glam metal guitarist Lita Ford was the ideal artist for a night of stellar, driving diversion. She hit it hard. Then Kid Rock took revelers fast, on a rough road riding, through a set list of steadfast hits and biker anthems. It was a first-rate night on the Wolfman Jack Stage.

    LAST NIGHT’S CONCERT …

for ClaSSiC roCkThe Buffalo Chip is the place

The biggest concerts during the Sturgis Rally are at the Buffalo Chip; always have been. Performers say they love the energy of the Chip audiences who have made themselves mem-orable to the top names in rock for their “twisted throttle” applause.

Legacy bands of classic rock make a point of playing The Chip; Lynyrd Skynyrd has referred to themselves as “the Chip’s house band,” an undeni-able compliment graciously accepted.

In an unparalleled assemblage of marquee names on the Wolfman Jack stage this week: Skynyrd closed out 20 years of Chip performances; Foreign-er’s original members reunited celebrating 40 years; and tonight John Kay & Steppenwolf appear dur-ing what many say is their final tour ever. That’s a dream week of concerts for classic rock fans!

    It’s been a week of history-making performances,

legendary names, renowned musi-cians: at a venue that’s hosted the concerts of a lifetime for 37 years. And we’re already planning for next year.

A MILESTONE MARKEDWhen your “house band” prepares for their last performance after 20 straight years, it’s a legacy to recognize. So Woody and his daughter Toni presented Lynyrd Skynyrd with a handcrafted commemorative Chip remembrance to mark the occasion. Happy trails, friends, and thanks for the memories.

    John Kay & Steppenwolf tonight!
