In this issue, we’re excited to feature Cheryl Tiegs, America’s first supermodel. I was fortunate to meet her in person this past July at TriVita’s Galaxy of Stars event held here in Scottsdale, AZ, USA. What an incredibly beautiful woman she is, and I was honoured to have my picture taken with her. Cheryl has appeared in several Nopalea infomercials in the USA. She’s such a believer in Nopalea, because of what it’s done for her personally. That’s why she’s partnering with TriVita, asking everyone to join her by taking the Nopalea Wellness Challenge. You can read more about Cheryl’s wellness story and the Challenge on page 8.

It’s amazing how many friends I have who are in their 50s, and a few approaching 60, who still look and feel so great. When I think back to my younger years, my perception of anyone in that age group was that they were “old people”. It’s funny how perception changes when you get there yourself! Now whenever I hear, “Wow, you look really good for your age,” I say – “How about simply, ‘You look really good!’” Who’s to say what any age is “supposed” to look like? With all the health and wellness information available, along with quality supplements, women (and men) today are fortunate to have these age-defying resources available to us.

This issue of the VitaJournal is full of articles we hope you’ll enjoy and share with the people you care about. One I particularly enjoyed reading was on page 23 from Dr. Sandra Chapman called “Digital Brain Damage – Are you at risk?” The results of a study confirm our obsession with technology – whether it’s a smart phone or tablet computer. I was recently on a 10-day trip to Canada, and didn’t turn on my cell phone at all because my phone bill was off the charts with data usage while there on an earlier visit. Luckily my friend was able to keep me connected to my iPad. After reading Dr. Chapman’s article I realised like so many others, I too, have a technology addiction. I definitely need to practice what this article preaches!

Please enjoy this issue, and let us know what types of articles you’d like to see in future digital publications. I encourage you to send your ideas or comments directly to me at: [email protected].

Until next time – experience wellness!

From the FOUNDER

Put some “begratitudes” into your life!

If I were to ask the question, “Do you desire a life of health or a life of wellness?” I am

sure I would receive a variety of responses. In the past, the words were used interchangeably, but many today realise that simply defining health as the absence of illness, disease or injury does not reflect quality of life. “Wellness” involves health, satisfaction and fulfilment.

Medical science has come a long way in the past 25 years. Today there is recognition that simply treating a disease or condition does not achieve the quality of life most people desire, nor does treatment stem the rising tide of disease. Though we have the most advanced medical technology and pharmaceutical drugs in history, we are still seeing an escalation of disease in all age brackets.

By what standards should we measure our wellness? Wellness is not a destination, but a journey with the goal of achieving and maximising your individual potential physically, emotionally, spiritually, socially and yes, financially.

If you desire a wellness journey, then you’ll need a plan to map out the journey and points of interest. If you don’t have a plan, may I suggest 10 of the most simple but profound essentials on earth to help you achieve a life of wellness? They are TriVita’s 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness. They are a life plan for maximising your wellness potential.

The essentials go way beyond physical health or mental health; the 10 Essentials are about the whole you filled with well-being. As an example, gratitude as an essential is one of the most powerful forces you can put into your life. Though it is listed as an emotional essential, it actually impacts every aspect of life. If I were to give one piece of advice to every person, it would be to develop your gratitude daily! With gratitude accept what life is offering today, and with gratitude accept a future you can pursue with many more possibilities.

Perhaps you have heard of the Beatitudes that Jesus taught. I would like to suggest a few “Begratitudes” to go along with the Beatitudes. Blessed are the grateful for their marriage shall blossom; blessed are the grateful for their finances shall prosper; blessed are the grateful for they shall enjoy enhanced well-being. You might want to see how many Begratitudes you can write down to help enhance your life.

On your journey of wellness, may the 10 Essentials become your guide and plan, leading to a life of destiny and well-being.

ASK DR. CONARD

Q: How does Vitamin B-12 give us more energy?

A: When we talk about Vitamin B-12 and energy, it’s all about metabolism. This powerhouse

vitamin is a must for the body processes that produce energy and keep us going.

When we say “metabolism,” we mean all the physical and chemical processes in the body that convert or use energy. This includes the processes necessary for all these body functions: breathing; circulating blood; controlling body temperature; contracting muscles; digesting food and nutrients; eliminating waste; functioning of the brain and nerves. Every single one of these meta-bolic tasks requires adequate amounts of Vitamin B-12.

As you may know, B-12 helps form red blood cells, and also helps keep our central nervous system running. When we don’t get enough of this powerhouse vitamin, a whole host of physical and mental problems can occur, including:

• Fatigue• Anaemia• Loss of balance• Memory problems

Ideally, we’d all get the B-12 we need from animal products such as eggs, meat, milk, poultry and shellfish. However, very few people eat “ideally.” And, there’s the matter of being able to use all the B-12 that we take in. As time goes on, the body is less able to absorb all the B-12 it needs. We now know that this absorption issue affects not just

older people, but even those as young as in their 20s. So, even if your diet is rich in B-12, your body may not be getting what it requires.

There are other causes for B-12 deficiencies. These include following a strict vegetarian or vegan diet; having gastrointestinal surgery (such as weight loss surgery), and having digestive problems such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease.

Why it’s smart to supplement with B-12

When any of the “B-blocking” situations exist, you simply cannot enjoy the optimal wellness and energy that make up a vibrant, healthy life. Remember, B-12 is important for metabolism. And metabolism affects both our physical and mental functioning. So, if you lack this key component, you may experience fatigue… confusion… poor memory… mental decline.

In my own medical practice, I’ve seen the difference that B-12 can make in people’s lives. I’ve had many patients come to me with low energy, mood problems and a lack of interest in life. And I’ve seen many remarkable turnarounds in these same patients once their B-12 deficiency was corrected.

Vitamin B-12 absorption declines as we age – especially after age 50. The ultimate result can be poor mental functioning,

premature aging and susceptibility to illness. Although there are many B-12 supplements available, few offer TriVita Sublingual B-12’s robust selection of vitamins, including:

• B-12• B-6• Biotin• Folic Acid

These four essential nutrients combined offer a fast, efficient way for the body to restore and maintain crucial Vitamin B-12 levels. This process begins by building and delivering protein to vital organs. Folic acid plays a crucial, early role in this process. Vitamin B-6 helps take protein into the liver and kidneys. Biotin moves the protein from the liver to heart and brain. Vitamin B-12 “locks in” the protein delivery process after all key vitamins have reached the brain.

These four nutrients help make TriVita’s Sublingual B-12 the “complete” B vitamin. Plus, our original patented sublingual (under the tongue) delivery system is still the best available.

Supermodel/Entrepreneur Cheryl Tiegs was in Canada when she first heard about a company called TriVita, and a

wellness drink sensation called Nopalea.

“I couldn’t sleep because of hip pain, and happened to see a Nopalea infomercial at 3 in the morning,” she recalls. The message about pain and inflammation hit home for this international celebrity, because her pain had already cut into her favorite outdoor activity, hiking. Intrigued, she started to research both TriVita and Nopalea.

“I met with Michael Ellison, TriVita’s CEO, and was so impressed with his vision of bringing wellness to the world,”

Cheryl enthuses. That unique vision, coupled with the anti-inflammatory wellness drink that had already changed the lives of so many, convinced Cheryl to take the Nopalea Wellness Challenge for herself.

She began with the Loading Phase (90-180 ml daily or more as needed; for her it was 226 ml of Nopalea daily). Soon the pain in her hip began to ease, to the point where “the pain went away; it doesn’t hurt at all – gone!” And then it was easy to make another kind of decision, a business decision: of all the wellness companies courting her to represent their products, Cheryl knew that TriVita was her natural partner.

“I urge everyone… to take the Challenge”Today, Cheryl is TriVita’s spokeswoman, starring in her own Nopalea TV shows. And she’s personally leading a campaign to get people to take the Nopalea Wellness Challenge. “I urge everyone suffering from pain and inflammation to take the Challenge as I did.” (For details on joining Cheryl in the Nopalea Wellness Challenge, see below.)

You don’t have to be a supermodel, a rock star or a celebrity of any kind to experience the difference that Nopalea can make. “Join me; take the Nopalea Wellness Challenge!” urges Cheryl. “Nopalea works, and I hope you discover what it can do for you, too.”

Nopalea™ Success Stories “For many years I had severe pain

“I strongly believe in the power of Nopalea. I suffer from chronically stiff, swollen and aching joints. After being on the Nopalea Loading Phase I have much more flex-ibility and less pain.”Maree O. – iTBO* – TOOWOOMBa, Qld, aUS

You can’t put out a forest fire with a single pail of water. Likewise, you can’t break the cycle of inflammation with a single serving of Nopalea.

We need to meet the level of inflammation in our body with an equivalent force of anti-inflammatory Bioflavonoids from Nopalea. We must ease inflammation with a Nopalea Loading Phase.

The cycle of inflammation Inflammation in your body is like a campfire: when properly contained, it is useful for warming your body and cooking your food. However, when even a single ember escapes the hearth and remains unquenched, it can smoulder and spread until it burns down an entire forest!

Runaway inflammation persists long after the cause has been removed. The same level of anti-inflammatory nutrients that will balance daily trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress will not “put out the fire” of runaway inflammation.

The Nopalea Loading Phase We are a people on fire: we typically have runaway inflam-mation raging in one or more places of our bodies. And if our inflamed condition is greater in size and intensity, we will need a REALLY SIGNIFICANT RESPONSE to help put out the fire.

The Bioflavonoids in Nopalea are anti-inflammatory – as such, they help ease the fire of inflammation. But how much Nopalea do you need? That depends: How big is the fire you are trying to put out?

Here is how the Nopalea Loading Phase works:

1. Pre-Evaluation: Before taking Nopalea for the first time, record your level of pain and rate the discomfort you feel. Also, look at things you may not readily associate with inflammation. For example, how well are you sleeping?

2. Complete the Loading Phase: Drink 90 to 180 ml of chilled Nopalea every day for 60 days.

3. Post-Evaluation: After 60 days, assess how you feel in comparison to before you started the Loading Phase. Most people find a significant difference.

Keep following the Loading Phase directions until the cycle of inflammation is eased in your body. Remember, only YOU know how much Nopalea you will need or how LONG you will need to continue the Loading Phase.

• If you think you need more – take more.

• If you think you need to continue the Loading Phase beyond 60 days – then keep doing it.

Trust your instinct because only you can tell when the cycle of inflammation in your body is broken.

Since her first magazine cover at the age of 17, Cheryl Tiegs’ dazzling look and smile have made her an iconic All-American

beauty. She became the world’s very first supermodel, then went on to create a multi-million-dollar beauty and fashion empire. Cheryl has also worked hard to maintain her health. She watches what she eats and stays active. However, her constantly on-the-move lifestyle was nearly sidetracked by major hip pain.

“Not so long ago, I suffered from severe inflammation,” recalls Cheryl. “My hip got so bad I stopped hiking. I would wake up in the morning and want to exercise, but I knew my hip was going to hurt afterwards, and I wouldn’t be able to sleep, so I stopped hiking.”

Searching for solutionsThat was a major concern for Cheryl because hiking is her passion. She has trekked all over the world, including Africa, Mexico’s Copper Canyon, the Arctic, even the Inca Trail in Peru. But then she could no longer even handle a short hike in the areas around her Los Angeles home. “I tried a lot of things to ease the pain, but nothing seemed to work.”

Inflammation had become a chronic problem for Cheryl, but when she was told that hip replacement was the only option, she was determined to find another solution. “I did a huge amount of research,” Cheryl says, “which is how I found out about Michael Ellison, the founder of TriVita. I discovered that it was his love of the Sonoran Desert and its people that

led to the creation of Nopalea, the anti-inflammatory wellness drink.”

A natural approachCheryl is a skeptic, so even after ordering Nopalea, it sat on her kitchen counter until she decided to try it. Cheryl started on the Nopalea Loading Phase (for her, 226 ml a day), and her pain gradually diminished within a month. She was equally thrilled to once again lace up her hiking boots. “My only regret is that I waited so long to try it,” she states.

Nopalea has made a huge difference for Cheryl, and she wants to share it with as many people as she can. That starts with her 87-year-old mom who “loves it,” as well as many friends who suffer

from pain and inflammation. Cheryl is regularly featured in Nopalea TV programming, which is broadcast throughout North America.

So, Cheryl is now in the enviable position of basking in her newfound good health. “It’s incredible that something as delicious and natural as Nopalea got me on my feet again,” she exclaims. “My energy is back, I sleep more soundly and I just feel better. I encourage everyone to give Nopalea a try. Take the Nopalea Wellness Challenge, just like I did. Now I have the good health and energy to enjoy exciting adventures and conquer new trails.”

For more on how you can join Cheryl in the Nopalea Wellness Challenge, see page 8.

H ave you noticed your waistline expanding with age? This expansion results from gaining fat around your

mid-section. Fat accumulation usually means your body is releasing too much insulin, a protein released from the pancreas gland. Unfortunately, in excessive amounts, insulin promotes the storage of fat.

The solution lies in three simple things: the foods we eat, the timing of our food consumption and staying relaxed.

1. The foods we eat All sugars are not equal. For example, drinking a glass of orange juice provides a boost of energy. This short-lived boost of sugar energy can cause your pancreas to overreact and release too much insulin. Unless you burn the sugar energy soon after drinking the juice, the juice can turn to fat! Consuming sugar earlier in the day gives you the chance to use it for your activities.

Choosing foods and drink that keep sugar levels low is vital to losing fat around the mid-section. Some examples are fish, chicken, tofu, lentils, lean beef and avocado. Most vegetables like broccoli, cucumber, cauliflower, onion, lettuce and mushrooms also promote fat loss by keeping sugar levels low.

2. When we eatBy eating small amounts frequently throughout the day, your body’s metabolic machinery can stay active. On the other hand, if you skip breakfast, eat a small amount at noon and fill up later in the evening, this is a good way to gain fat around your mid-section. Skipping breakfast leaves your body’s metabolic machinery in “sleep mode.” Try to eat at least three hours before bed. If you do snack late, then choose a protein like a few almonds or some avocado and cucumber.

3. Staying relaxedA restful sleep and a low-stress approach to life help to lose fat. Sleep helps the gut release a chemical messenger called leptin, a hormone that turns off your appetite for food. Inadequate leptin levels can cause you to be too hungry and make it more difficult to choose food and drink wisely.

Relaxing exercise that stretches and opens up your body’s muscles and tissues helps you release fat better. Deep breathing, gentle stretching movements and walking are all good.

Did you know that metabolism slows down 5-10% every decade past the 20s? While that may seem like a daunting statistic, you can adjust to the changes

that time brings and fuel your body for vibrant good health.

Age 50+Supplementation is essential after 50 because it becomes more difficult to absorb and digest proteins and minerals. Without a bit of help, this can lead to a variety of ailments such as fatigue, osteoporosis and other chronic illness. Take necessary precautions with these essential nutrients and dietary tips.

1: Vitamin B-12: Insufficient Vitamin B-12 levels can lead to fatigue, brain fog and a higher risk of heart disease. Vitamin B-12 is particularly hard to absorb as we age, so a sublingual supplement is suggested.

2: Magnesium and calcium: Both of these are essential to protect against osteopenia (pre-osteoporosis) and osteoporosis. Magnesium is essential to your cellular health. Supplementing with 400 milligrams of magnesium citrate is a good way to go. Calcium needs increase by 20% after age 50; 1200 milligrams is a good dose. Dark leafy greens like kale and collard greens, and sea vegetables like kelp and nori provide high amounts of both nutrients.

3: Vitamin D: Not only is Vitamin D critical for bone health, but it also decreases the chance of breast cancer. The most concen-trated sources of natural Vitamin D are fatty fishes like tuna, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines and anchovies, as well as egg yolks. Alternatively, a Vitamin D supplement is a great choice.

4: Betaine hydrochloride: Our bodies digest food less efficiently as we age because stomach acid declines. Betaine hydrochloride can support digestion when taken with meals and may be taken along with digestive enzymes.

5: Protein: Include adequate protein in your diet (100 grams per day). Choose foods that are rich in high-quality protein, such as organic eggs, free-range poultry and lamb, and ocean wild-caught fish. Protein deficiency can cause decreased muscle mass, fatigue and mental fog.

PreparationIf chicken breasts are more than 12.7 mm thick, put them between 2 sheets of plastic wrap and gently pound with the flat side of a meat pounder or with a rolling pin until they’re 12.7 mm thick. Whisk together eggs in a shallow dish. Put sesame seeds, gluten free bread crumbs, salt and pepper in another shallow dish. Dry the chicken on paper towels. Dip first in egg, then in sesame seed mixture.

Heat oil in a 304 mm heavy skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Reduce heat to moderate and cook 3 pieces of chicken, turning over once with tongs, until coating is golden and chicken is cooked through, 10 to 12 minutes, then transfer to a plate. Remove any browned sesame seeds from skillet, and cook remaining chicken.

How is your energy level? The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is the ability to lead a socially and economically productive life.”

Does that describe you? Or, like many people throughout the world, are you just too tired to think about being socially and economically productive?

The scope of the problemIf you feel too tired to do much more than read this article, then you have a serious energy problem. You don’t have to feel alone. Up to 85% of the people who visit a doctor for any reason also complain of being chronically tired. All of us deserve

the energy to dream and then have the energy to live those dreams. We want to feel our best every day... and it all begins with the food we eat.

Food and energyA balanced diet must include:

• 7 to 9 servings of fruit and vegetables (for adults)

• 30+ grams of high quality protein

• 20 to 35 grams of fibre daily

The dangers of energy or sports drinksBefore the rise of energy or sports drinks, athletes (and the rest of us) drank water when we exercised or got sweaty. Now there’s a profusion of so-called energy drinks. Many are

highly caffeinated, filled with calories and very popular among teenagers and young adults.

The questionable combination of ingredients in these drinks prompted a team of researchers from Australia’s University of Queensland and Uni- versity of Texas Health Center, USA to study their effectiveness. The researchers noted serious safety issues. The study also warns that “high levels of caffeine in these drinks may cause certain susceptible people dangerous risks or even life-threatening effects on blood pressure, heart rate and brain function.”

Diabetes is one of the most studied chronic diseases of our time because it is reaching epidemic proportions

throughout the world. In Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, the body has insufficient insulin, which is necessary to turn food into energy. Left untreated, this can lead to heart disease and stroke, mental decline or dementia, kidney failure and death. The positive news is that there are things you can do to avoid this disease.

Know your risk, know your optionsIt’s important to know your risk factors of developing diabetes. Being over age 55 is a higher risk. Other risks include: being overweight; having a first-degree relative with diabetes; being sedentary; being in a high-risk ethnic population (such as Asian-American and Pacific Islander); being previously identified with pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance or fasting glucose; having hypertension (high blood pressure) and high cholesterol.

If you’re at high risk for developing diabetes, you need to be screened regularly to detect pre-diabetes stages. If you already have an impaired glucose tolerance, your goal is to keep blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. Here’s where lifestyle changes can make a big difference.

Not easy, but simple: diet and exerciseThe key to preventing diabetes is the two “gold” principles: a healthy, balanced diet and physical exercise.

Diet specifics in diabetes preventionSeveral studies have shown that increased intake of whole grains and dietary fibre can reduce the risk of diabetes. Whole grain foods have been associated with improved insulin sensitivity, independent of body weight, and dietary fibre has been associated with improved insulin sensitivity and improved ability to secrete insulin adequately to overcome insulin resistance.

The importance of exerciseExercise training can bring many benefits to older adults: better breathing and fitness, lower risk factors for atherosclerosis (“hardening of the arteries”), better retention of lean body mass, reduced visceral abdominal fat and improved insulin sensitivity.

It is important to stick to a regular exercise program, but beforehand discuss it with your doctor, especially if you have other associated diseases like coronary heart disease or hypertension.

The goal is to be engaged in physical activity in which you build up a sweat, like brisk walking or swimming, for at least 30 minutes per day, three times per week if your health permits.

These simple guidelines can make a huge difference in health, independence and quality of life for anyone, no matter the age or condition.

How’s our health? In some ways super; in others, not so much, according to the latest statistics available. Here are some quick snapshots of the health trends for Australia and New Zealand:

5.1 YEARS – The increase in Australian life expectancy between 1989 and 2009. For women now, the average is 84 years; for men, 79.5 years. This is one of the highest life expectancies in the world. In New Zealand, women live to an average of 82.7 years; men, 78.8 years. The explanation: a reduction in the infant mortality rate, the rapid decline in infectious diseases and improvement in diseases of the circulatory system.

Lighting up is going down. Tobacco SMOKING has been declining steadily, now at 17% for those 15 and over who smoke daily in Australia. In New Zealand, the rate is 18%. The only nations with lower rates of smoking are the U.S. and Sweden.

Cheers? Some may not toast this statistic: Australians age 15 and over drink 10.3 litres of alcohol per person, per year. Only the United Kingdom has a higher rate of alcohol consumption at 10.8 litres. In New Zealand, the figure is 9.5 litres.

Who’s more OBESE? New Zealanders, at 26.5% (only the U.S. has a higher rate: 34%). Australians weigh in at 24.6%.

Australians get more exercise than New Zealanders, according to the latest report. While almost 38% of Aussies were found to lead inactive lives, the figure for New Zealand was higher, at almost 48%.

84.6 – That’s the lowest “health risk factor” score among nations surveyed, and the winner is Canada. Health risk factors group together trends in

smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and lack of exercise. Australia turns in a respectable score of 89.5; New Zealand, 101.5, and the top (worst) score? The United Kingdom, at 119.5.

Linda Hertzberg

Linda Hertzberg is a fitness director and trainer in Scottsdale, AZ, USA. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, and is certified in several fitness disci-plines by ACE (American Council on Exercise), as well as being a Certified Pilates Trainer.

P ilates has become a fitness phenomenon. In the last 20 years, this system of exercises has gone from obscurity to being

a universally-recognised form of training with highly-trained instructors all over the globe (including me). In a very small nutshell, the goal of Pilates is to strengthen and align your body.

Pilates was developed decades ago by Joseph Pilates, a German immigrant. Joe was a boxer and circus performer with an intelligent curiosity about how human bodies move. This self-educated athlete invented equipment that helped him rehabilitate injured people in the United Kingdom in the 1920s. In 1925 he brought his experience and ideas to New York, where he and his wife Clara opened a studio that operated until 1966.

Spinal mobility & strengthYour spine is meant to flex forward, back, sideways and rotate, so it’s important that you do exercises that increase your strength and mobility in all of these directions to maintain youthful suppleness. One more important way to move your spine is sequentially, bone by bone from the skull down and from the tail up. This process is called “spinal articulation.” Pilates is known for exercises that mobilise your spine in all these ways.

Body awareness: key to preventing Injury Pilates exercises must be executed with concentration and precision. If done this way, these exercises will stimulate the mind/body connection and will ultimately create better posture and ease of movement. Most people who do Pilates exercises regularly

have healthier movement patterns and fewer injuries.

The importance of breathingBreathing connects the muscular core of your torso to your spine, infusing your body with oxygen, getting it ready for action. Be aware of your breathing during every exercise to maximise results.

You can purchase Pilates DVDs for home use or you can find a professional to guide you. Here are three Pilates exercises you can try at home.

1. Pilates rollback Sit on the floor with knees bent, pull your belly in and exhale as you roll your torso back with arms reaching forward. Inhale to roll up to sitting position. Repeat 10 times.

2. Pilates rollback with rotation Sit on the floor with knees bent, pull your belly in and exhale as you roll your torso back and rotate torso to the right. Look back and reach one arm back as the other arm reaches forward. Inhale, sit up. Alternate sides 10 times.

3. Hip lifts with spinal articulation Lie on your back with knees bent. Exhale, tilt your pubic bone up and press your low back into the floor. Hips, then torso, curl off the floor without arching your low back. Inhale. Your head, shoulders, feet and hands are on the floor. Exhale as you articulate your spine downward. Repeat 10 times.

Consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program.

How exercise (a little) can lengthen your life (a lot)Would you devote 15 minutes a day to living 3 years longer? You might, after seeing the results of this major study:

• Researchers in Taiwan found that compared to people who enjoy little or no exercise, those who engaged in physical activity for just 15 minutes a day lived up to 3 years longer.

• The study tracked the activities of over 400,000 people over the course of 8 years.

• Those who exercised an average of 92 minutes per week had a 14% lower risk of death, and a 10% lower risk of cancer, compared to the “inactive” group.

• Researchers likened the benefits of exercise to giving up smoking.

Low Vitamin B-12 levels linked to mental impairment, neurodegenerative diseasesMelbourne, VIC, AUS

Researchers from the University of Melbourne reviewed 43 Vitamin B-12 studies and found that overall, low B-12 levels are associated with neurodegenerative disease (conditions that affect brain cells) and cognitive (mental) impairment.

Vitamin B-12 levels in the subclinical low-normal range were associated with Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and Parkinson’s disease. B-12 deficiency was associated with cognitive impairment. Scientists found that vegetarianism and metformin use (a diabetes medication) contributed to reduced B-12 levels and could independently increase the risk of cognitive impairment. The scientists also analysed the data to determine if B-12 therapy can help with cognitive impairment and dementia. They found that a small subset of dementias could be reversed with B-12 therapy, but it does not improve mental performance in patients without a pre-existing deficiency.

“Social jetlag” can contribute to obesity Munich, GER

Hectic work and leisure schedules that interfere with people’s biological rhythms can lead to obesity, according to research from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich.

“Our surveys suggest that in Western societies two-thirds of the population are burdened with a significant discrepancy between their internal time and the demands imposed by school and work schedules and leisure stress,” said Professor Till Roenneberg, who designated the phenomenon “social jetlag.”

Social jetlag often leads to lack of sleep, which is associated with obesity. Social jetlag in general is strongly associated with increased body mass index (BMI). Additionally, if lifestyle is persistently out of sync with the biological clock, it increases the risk of adverse health conditions such as high blood pressure and even cancer. The scientists report that the incidence of social jetlag is increasing.

Dark chocolate may protect against heart attack and strokeMelbourne, VIC, AUS

Heart patients who eat 100 grams of dark chocolate with 70% or higher cocoa content per day may lower their risk of heart attack and stroke, said researchers at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

“Our findings indicate dark chocolate therapy could provide an alternative to or be used to complement drug therapeutics in people at high risk of cardiovascular disease,” said lead researcher Ella Zomer. “We’re not suggesting that the high-risk group use dark chocolate as their only preventive measure, but in combination with sensible choices such as exercise.”

Zomer and colleagues predicted that daily chocolate consumption could prevent 70 non-fatal and 15 fatal cardiovascular events per 10,000 people over a 10-year period. High-cocoa chocolate contains polyphenols which help reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow.

Our digital culture is changing our brains, and the pervasive reliance on portable devices has caused a constant state of

divided attention.

According to a recent study, 30% of 2-to-5-year-olds know how to operate a smart phone or tablet computer and 61% can play a basic computer game. Statistics show more than one-third of smart phone users get online before getting out of bed, and adults are staring at screens for at least eight hours a day.

In this digital and device-driven age, technological advances have many benefits, of course, giving us immediate access to massive amounts of information. Technology improves eye-hand coordination, increases reaction time, and enhances our ability to pick out details from clutter.

But it isn’t all positive. Research shows we are exposed to three times more information today than four decades ago. This information overload leads to more multitasking as we toggle back and forth between projects, switching between our computer and cell phone endlessly throughout the day.

Dying brain cells, more errorsThis high-performance demand fatigues the frontal lobe, slows efficiency and decreases performance. Multitasking contributes to the death of brain cells, takes a dramatic toll on mental processing and causes increased

errors. Multitasking also leads to the build- up of cortisol, the stress hormone.

If you’re immersed in the digital domain, technology is rewiring your brain daily to make you more addicted to being distracted. Just like your brain’s response to a drug, dopamine (a chemical messenger) is released in response to technological “pings,” such as text or email alerts. Dopamine cells respond to a reward primarily when it occurs unpredictably. Since our brains want to repeat the feelings of pleasure triggered by dopamine, one technological “ping” may produce a greater desire for the next.

Bottom line: while technology can boost your brainpower, it can also impair the normal function of your brain.

Tips to reduce the damage• Practice interval training: spend 15 minutes

using technology and 15 minutes without.

• Shut off your cell phone, turn off the computer and limit your use of technology to certain hours of the day.

• Try to restrict your technology time in the evenings to allow your brain to calm down before sleep. For example, silence your cell phone 30 minutes before bed or do not bring your cell phone into your bedroom.

• Challenge yourself to ignore the “ping” of text messages or email alerts.

VITAMIN C:more crucial to your health than you may thinkFor the best benefit, you deserve the best formulation

W e know that Vitamin C is vitally important to our health. What many don’t

know is the crucial role that this essential vitamin plays in body processes and our cellular health.

Vitamin C helps provide strong protec-tion against the stresses, pressures and pollutants of everyday life. High levels of Vitamin C are necessary to help shore up the body’s defence systems and remove harmful toxins contained in our air, our water and our food which can lead to illness.

Medical research showed that C was a powerful ally in fighting colds, aiding heart health, digestive function and blood sugar balance. TriVita is proud to offer the only brand available that uses the original crystalline structured Vitamin C formula.

Why we need Vitamin C from outside sourcesBecause the body can’t manufacture or store Vitamin C, we must get this vitamin in other ways, and we need a new supply every day. It’s hard to get adequate amounts from fruits and vegetables alone, so we need to supplement with Vitamin C every day.

Only the best Vitamin C will doFor maximum results, you need a supe-rior Vitamin C supplement that provides maximum absorption for quicker results, greater potency for stronger health support and a non- acidic formulation that won’t upset the stomach.

Sally K. wondered if her suffering would ever cease. This Queensland, AUS resident was diagnosed with an autoimmune

condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. Her treatment involved both oral and injectable steroids. “My condition deteriorated so badly that I went blind in one eye twice over the years,” Sally remembers. “In the last three years I have also had two knee reconstructions, injections in my joints and I have been on every pain medication you could imagine.”*

Great advice from mom Sally’s mom was trying to help her find solutions for many years. When she told Sally about Nopalea, Sally was sceptical, but said to herself, “What do I have to lose?” Her mom gave Sally a bottle of Nopalea and a box of Sublingual B-12… and her journey toward wellness began. Sally was astonished by the results. “I just could not believe that after weeks my pain had diminished,” she exclaims. “I called my mum all excited and told her the news. We both cried with joy!”

Now Sally’s morning ritual includes a trip to the refrigerator to get her first delicious serving of Nopalea. She then “pops” a Sublingual B-12 tablet. “I feel so alive when I take these two products together,” says Sally. “I can’t imagine starting my day without taking both. Now I’ve added Vital C™ Crystal Powder and Tablets to the mix, and my skin looks and feels so much better. Energy Now!® also really rejuvenates me.”

Mood boosterBecause of Sally’s condition, she also had a serious fatigue problem which was helped by Sublingual B-12. “This product has given me energy which I was desperately lacking when I woke up in the morning,” she notes. “Now I pop a Sublingual B-12 tablet under my tongue and my energy and moods are great now. Before I was very ‘down’ about my physical condition. I always felt tired and had no energy.”

Since taking Sublingual B-12 Sally has much better focus and concentration. “I also don’t get as panicky like I did in the past and am no longer tearful and cranky.”

“Life is great now,” Sally adds, “and I can laugh and smile again too. I highly recommend TriVita’s products – especially Nopalea, Sublingual B-12 and Vital C. After all, they worked for me!”**

G randparents so special, as you know if you have one or are one yourself. They have an honoured place in the family tree; here are just a few of the reasons they are so loved.

Provide family history and cultural heritage: Grandparents help keep family history alive. They are in the unique position of knowing more about family history than anyone else. When they pass this knowledge on, it provides a sense of continuity and history in our lives.

Undivided attention: Often retired, grandparents can give the undivided attention to their grandchildren that they couldn’t give to their own children due to work and other commitments.

Skills and knowledge: With a lifetime of skills and knowledge under their belts, grandparents can teach their grandchildren things that they would never learn in school.

Willingness/ability to travel: Many times, grandparents have more availability than time- and money-strapped parents and can take grandchildren on trips. These can be day trips, overnight adventures and even longer summer getaways.

Buffer: Grandparents can often be that buffer between parents and (typically) teenage children, offering wisdom and advice that children usually won’t take from their parents.

Make a great audience: When grandkids have a poem to recite or a musical instrument to play, grandparents can be counted on to watch, listen and applaud with enthusiasm.

They’ve got the goods on mom and dad: Gram and Gramps have the best stories to tell about their own kids; stories the grandkids would never hear from their parents!

Food: Nothing beats the taste of grandma’s homemade food. And when we’re sick, her homemade soup is instrumental in making us feel better.

Help kids earn a buck: Sometimes grandparents will pay their grandkids to do chores around their house – and it’s usually more than their average allowance.

Care packages: When grandparents live far away or when their grandkids go off to school, they can be counted on to send letters and care packages full of all sorts of goodies.

They love to spoil us: Enough said!

What we love about them

The Beauty of HEALTH with Cheryl Tiegs

Do you have a question for Cheryl about healthy living? Write to: [email protected], and your question may be featured in an upcoming column.

Y ou might not know that I had a weight issue, but I did, in my early 20s. That’s when my metabolism changed, but my teenage eating patterns didn’t.

So I sought out expert nutritional help, and I’ve applied that knowledge to my everyday eating ever since.

I learned portion control, and how good foods can fuel the body. I also stopped eating sweets, period. It wasn’t easy, but I did it cold turkey and after six months, it clicked in.

Here’s the daily meal routine that keeps me feeling healthy and energised:

Breakfast: Two pieces of sprouted grain bread with a no-fat, no-cholesterol buttery spread, and green tea.

Sprouted grain bread is different from ordinary bread: Grains and seeds are allowed to sprout, or germinate, before baking.

This produces more vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre than “enriched” bread. You can find sprouted grain bread in the frozen section of health food stores. Green tea, of course, is loaded with antioxidants that are said to help protect against cancer, blood clots and hardening of the arteries.

Lunch: Protein in the form of lean meat, chicken or fish, always grilled or baked, plus a salad and vegetables. My salads are always

fresh, leafy greens like Bibb lettuce and arugula. I try to be aware of how much oil and fat I’m consuming, so for salad dressing, I drizzle on a tablespoon of olive oil with some white wine vinegar or lemon, and salt and pepper.

Whatever fresh vegetable I’m eating – broccoli, green beans, cauliflower or asparagus – I lightly steam it so it’s a little crunchy. Then I add a tiny bit of salt and pepper, and that’s all.

Dinner: My dinner is a lighter version of my lunch, just with different proteins and vegetables to keep things interesting. Nutritionists say that a big meal at the end of the day is bad for our metabolism and our sleep, so I like to have my biggest meal at lunch.

My challenge tip: Potato chips are my weakness. I just don’t keep them in the house. Whatever your weakness is, just get it out of there. If it’s not good for you, it’s not good for your family.

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS

L ife is full of stressful situations and feeling down from time to time is a normal part of life. But when sadness or the feeling of emptiness

turns into despair and won’t go away, it may be depression.

The lows of depression make it hard to function and may interfere with your ability to work, study, eat, sleep and have fun. Just getting through the day can be overwhelming.

Depression is more common among women than among men. Biological, life cycle, hormonal and psychosocial factors unique to women may be linked to women’s higher depression rate. However, depression varies from person to person.

Having some of these symptoms from time to time is normal but if you have several symptoms, (and if these symptoms become overwhelming and disabling,) you should seek outside help.

Symptoms to watch for• Loss of interest in daily activities. No

interest in hobbies, pastimes, social activities that use to give you pleasure.

• Feelings of hopelessness. A negative outlook – nothing ever will get better.

• Sleep changes. Either insomnia or oversleeping.

• Appetite or weight changes. A loss of appetite or you can’t stop eating.

• Anger or irritability. More irritable, short-tempered, or aggressive.

• Loss of energy. Fatigue and overwhelming exhaustion.

• Reckless behaviour. Drinking too much alcohol and/or other irresponsible behaviours.

• Concentration problems. Trouble focusing, making decisions and remembering things.

• Unexplained aches and pains. Increased physical complaints such as headaches and backaches.

• You have thoughts that life isn’t worth living. Seek professional help immediately.

No matter how hopeless you may feel right now you can get better. Feeling better takes time, but you can get there if you have the right treatment plan. The best plan involves professional help, self-help, and lifestyle changes.

These self-help tips can help you during your recovery: Cultivate supportive relationships; challenge negative thinking; get regular exercise; eat a healthy, mood-boosting diet; aim for 8 hours of sleep; practice relaxation techniques.Even if you’re receiving professional help, these tips can be part of your treatment plan, speeding your recovery and preventing depression from returning.

God readies us for every battle

your body, His Temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20

Donna KaferDonna Kafer, TriVita’s chaplain, has also served as chaplain to the Arizona (USA) State Legislature for 15 years. She has written two books, and has a third in progress.

By Chaplain Donna Kafer

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me”. ~ Psalm 23:4

W hen a master forger plunges a steel blade from the fire into water, he is doing what is

necessary to “temper” the steel. The blade is hammered, heated, straightened, sharpened, then cooled in water over and over until its creator determines it is fit for service. This process must take place so that the gleaming blade will be useful in battle.

Perhaps this is the way God works in our lives, straightening out the rough places, honing our edges, creating razor-sharp reflexes in our character to make us ready to engage in conflict. We may not like the fire, nor the shock of the cold water, or the repeated times this must be done to help us withstand the barbs and arrows that we face, but the Master Forger knows best.

Hide in defeat? No: stand to conquerOften we resist the difficult places that we find ourselves, not understanding why we must face one more heartache, or yet another crushing blow. Most often our defence is to run away, to hide within ourselves, pulling the proverbial covers up over our heads in defeat. We forget that the Master Forger has given us the ability to stand up and face the enemy head on, that we have been equipped to fight.

Do not faint away in distress, but remember who it is that holds the blade, the Powerful One who keeps you close to His side in the scabbard. When He draws the sword, which is your life, a life he has tempered in the fire of victory, you cannot fail. He is your Champion, He is your Protector. It is He who leads the charge through the swirling haze of adversaries that seek to steal your peace and joy. Rejoice! For you have been given much in the way of meeting any formidable opponent, no matter what it may be that seeks to tear you asunder.

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” ~ Romans 8:37

God uses troubles in our lives to teach us great lessons that we would never have learned otherwise. Our Lord regards these times not as difficulties, but rather as opportunities. The value of the lesson learned works a sweetness into our lives, and the glorious reward it leaves behind far surpasses the trial that we faced. God bestows a greater measure of divine grace upon us when we have descended into the valley of despair.

Though the depth of sorrow overtake you, though you struggle with some fear, trust that the Father loves you, and that He is ever near.

M arc W. is a highly-ranked martial artist whose body has been put to the test in many

different situations. This 40-year-old Queensland, Australia native prides himself on his professional accomplish-ments. Yet his body can pay the price – one bruising session at a time.

Marc currently has a 4th degree red sash in Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu and Tai Chi martial arts. He also is an acupuncturist with a Master’s degree from the University of Western Sydney. “I have spent the last 18 years studying and practicing Chinese medicine and martial arts,” Marc says. “This can involve long hours on my feet while I teach or work in the clinic, and many hours of martial training that are physically and mentally taxing.”

Marc recently began noticing the first signs of aging and repetitive exercise. This included pain and inflammation in his left shoulder and right elbow. He attempted some of the same treatments that had previously been so successful, including massage, acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and liniments. Unfortunately, this time around, the results weren’t nearly as good. Marc still suffered from low-grade aches in his shoulder and elbow. He was concerned that this prolonged pain and inflammation could affect his livelihood.

“Loading up” on NopaleaMarc’s luck changed when his fiancée, Toni, decided to become an Independent TriVita Business Owner. “She strongly felt that I would benefit from the Nopalea Loading Phase,” Marc recalls. “Being in the natural healthcare industry, I was sceptical about Nopalea. There is always something coming out that’s the next ‘big thing’ for your health and well-being.”

“Initially I was taking a single 90 ml serving,” Marc admits, “but then Toni learned from people ‘in the know’ that I needed to be on the Loading Phase for at least 60 days.” He was pleasantly surprised by the results and experienced much less pain in both the shoulder and the elbow. “I noticed a major difference after drinking the larger amount,” Marc relates. “Once again I have not stopped any of my training, and the low-grade ache has also gone away. My range of motion is also normal, which is very important in the martial arts classroom. I can definitely say that this product will always be vital to my continued health, mobility, strength and flexibility.”

Building a businessMarc confidently recommends Nopalea to family, friends and especially his martial arts students. He’s also excited

about Toni’s budding TriVita business, because it fits in so effortlessly with their health-oriented lifestyle. “The growth of the TriVita business is going to give us the free time to do the things we love,” Marc enthuses. “This includes travel, spending more time with each other, supporting family and friends in their health and life’s goals and continuing to study and train in the martial arts. Whatever I do or wherever I go, I’ll always have a bottle of Nopalea nearby.”
