PURSUING WELLNESS

A recent news report featured American cardiologist

Dr. Stephen Sinatra, who has been practicing medicine for 30 years and is now pointing to inflammation – not cholesterol – as the cause of cardiovascular disease. In his new book, The Great Cholesterol Myth, Dr. Sinatra contends that “cholesterol is found at

the scene of the crime for heart disease, but it’s not the perpetrator.” If cholesterol doesn’t cause heart disease, what does? Dr. Sinatra, along with a growing number of physicians, is now pointing the finger at inflammation. More and more scientific evidence is showing that excessive and long-term inflammation is a contributor to many unwanted health challenges.

I bring this up to increase awareness of inflam-mation’s risks, not to encourage you to ignore cholesterol numbers or other health indicators. I do encourage you to seek a balanced approach to health. One way to help lower inflammation as well as promote healthy cholesterol levels is to eat a healthy, balanced diet. This should include fruits, vegetables, fish, legumes, healthy fats and whole, non-genetically modified grains (these foods make up the so-called Mediterranean diet).

One study concluded that the Mediterranean diet lowered cholesterol. It also showed that sugars and processed foods were major contributors to higher

cholesterol counts. So your diet is an important part of maintaining healthy inflammation and cholesterol levels. The best way to start an anti-inflammatory diet is to eat unprocessed foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as wild salmon, sardines, herring, anchovies, flaxseed, hempseed and walnuts. Add vegetables like onions, garlic, peppers and dark leafy vegetables. The fruit in Nopalea™ can also contribute to your plan of lowering inflammation and having a much more balanced approach to health.

You can learn more about inflammation’s effects on your health throughout this VitaJournal. Also featured are multiple articles about stress; like inflammation, long-term exposure can be very harmful to your health.

With your health in mind, I am pleased to announce that Adaptuit™ is now available in Australia! Adaptuit is the delicious new drink featuring 10 powerful adaptogens – plants that can “adapt” and thrive in harsh environments – a mix of vital antioxidants, and Aloe vera for enhanced nutrition. I encourage you to read the article by Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer, about the science behind this delicious drink (pages 12-13). Be calmer, do better and go further with Adaptuit!

Pursue health and well-being with passion.

You’ll want to take advantage of special 4-Pack pricing for both Adaptuit and Nopalea. For details, see pages 9 and 15.

Our “Physician Formulations” are designed by people with the training and skills to know what works to promote good health.

Quality control and assurance processesMany of our key products have been listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) under the complementary medicine category. The raw materials we use in our products are tested to be certain there are no impurities and are all TGA listed. In addition, our products are packaged using TGA standards of manufacturing quality.

Unique Nopalea™ formulationNopalea is unique for a number of reasons: first and foremost, the Nopal fruit in Nopalea is harvested in the Sonoran Desert by natives

that have revered the healing properties of the fruit for thousands of years. TriVita has an exclusive agreement with the harvesters; we treasure and protect this precious natural resource.

But, as you may have noticed, there are other ingredients in Nopalea. Many of the ingredients have direct therapeutic value. I put them there for a reason: because of the causes of inflammation.

Inflammation may lead to infection; so, I put in the highest fruit sources of mannose to help protect against bad bacteria adhering to inflamed tissues. I included the ingredients with the highest nitric oxide potential to open circulation so

your body can battle potential infections without causing more inflammation. Inflammation also leads to premature cell death. Several ingredients in Nopalea participate in this repair process. Six of the ingredients in Nopalea are known to promote potent stem cell production.

In future issues of the VitaJournal, I will be discussing how other TriVita products have addressed a variety of unmet needs. Our ultimate goal is to ensure the purity of our products and the safety of our Members.

M edical research continues to show the link between the immune system, chronic inflammation and a host of ills. Here are more reasons to keep your

immune system strong and inflammation down:

Rejection can damage healthWhen a partner breaks off a relationship or a friend snubs you, the rejection can hurt physically as well as mentally. Such events, called “targeted rejection” by researchers, might set off a response in the immune system that leads to inflammation.

That was the conclusion of a team of U.S. and Canadian scientists after studying 147 teenaged girls who were at risk for depression. The girls were analysed every six months. Those who had experienced targeted rejection showed increased levels of inflammation. The researchers said that if such rejection was continual, it could damage health over a lifetime.

More proof: obesity weighs us downScientists have confirmed the connection between obesity, inflammation and a weakened immune system. The Spanish National Research Council in Madrid said that adults, teenagers and children who carry excess weight all have higher levels of pro-inflammatory proteins in their systems. This higher level of inflammation, the researchers noted, affects the immune system and leads to a number of metabolic diseases, such as diabetes.

Stress/immune/inflammation loopToo much personal conflict can be very bad for your health. Researchers who studied 122 young adults found that after arguing with others, the participants’ levels of inflammation went up. Stress activates the immune system to release molecules linked to inflammation. If this inflammation is chronic, or constant, it can contribute to heart disease, asthma, diabetes and mental disorders.

Inflammation promotes illnessChronic mental stress doesn’t just feel bad: it is bad for both body and mind. A research team led by Carnegie Mellon University’s Sheldon Cohen found that chronic psychological stress makes the immune system less able to control inflammation. After studying almost 400 adults under chronic stress, the researchers found that the participants were less able to resist viruses that cause the common cold.

Research:

Inflammation up? Immunity down

Unrelenting pain… that’s what Mike G. suffered through for the past 37 years.

“The pain was at an 8 to 9 level out of 10 for many of those days,” Mike reports. “Anyone who has experienced constant pain knows that it affects every area of your life – physical, emotional, mental, relational and spiritual.”

This Surrey, BC, Canada resident was in two serious car accidents that resulted in two back surgeries, and pain and stiffness throughout the body. He also felt really “down” about his life and frustrated. Mike says, “My life was becoming increasingly difficult and challenging in all aspects.”

Popping pillsHe also tried strong prescription medication for many years, and was resigned that this was how he was going to live the rest of his life. Then, two years ago, a friend who was also undergoing major pain issues suggested Nopalea. “I’m sorry to say that I didn’t take it,” says Mike. “Then, about a year ago my friend asked me again if I would be willing to try it, and I let go of my natural scepticism, because I had nothing to lose except my pain.”

Mike started on the Nopalea Loading Phase (90-180 ml per day) and after the third week he woke up and noticed that he no longer had any pain or stiffness in his hands. The news by week seven was even better… his back pain was virtually nonexistent. “I could arch my back without pain for the first time in 35 years,”

says an elated Mike. “Some days I have no pain. On the days I have pain, it’s at a 1 out of 10 and hardly noticeable. Based on these great results, I will be taking Nopalea for the rest of my life.”

Defeating years of inflammation Mike counsels patience for all his fellow pain sufferers. “It took me two months to experience relief from a lifetime of pain,” Mike emphasizes. “So, I tell people it takes as long as it takes to feel results. I encourage my fellow pain sufferers to take the Loading Phase every day until your pain dim-inishes to a comfortable level, and then you can lower the amount.”

Mike notes that the health issues that cause inflammation build up over a period of time. Your inflammation won’t go away overnight. The good news is that drinking Nopalea is sheer pleasure.

“Nopalea tastes great and is so refreshing,” Mike states. “I really look forward to taking it every morning.” Mike acknowledges that some people may be doubtful even after reading this article. “Do you want to be stubborn or happy and healthy?” he responds. “Living life with virtually no pain is the difference between living and coping.”*

How stress slams your immune system

Samuel Grief, M.D.Samuel Grief, M.D., CCFP, FCFP, was named one of “Chicago’s Top Doctors” in 2012. Dr. Grief is Medical Director at the University of Illinois, USA. He is also a member of TriVita’s Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Grief  received his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

W hen chronic stress (along with chronic inflammation) attacks the immune system,

the result can be serious disease.

An immune system under stress and deprived of the proper nutrients and nurturing will form an auto-immune response. Auto-immunity is an abnormal response to an abnormal problem of chronic stress and chronic inflammation. Your immune system loses its ability to distinguish healthy tissues from diseased tissues – so it attacks them both.

Consider two examples: lupus and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Lupus causes inflammation in all the internal organs, and as a result, your immune system attacks the organs. Eventually, the organs can be destroyed by your own immune system. In RA, healthy joints are attacked as though they were diseased; good cartilage is destroyed along with bad.

Increasingly, the medical community is looking at chronic inflammation as the real issue behind many serious diseases. I’d like to emphasise that inflammation itself is a normal, healthy response. It’s when the immune system gets “stuck” in this defense mode that inflammation becomes chronic, and that’s when action is needed.

Reduce stress, increase nutrients While there are no quick fixes for a struggling immune system, repair can be accomplished through stress reduction and intense nutrition. Many doctors advocate taking a multi-vitamin or multi-nutrient supplement, along with an antioxidant complex and an Omega-3 supplement.

The immune system interacts with your brain and other immune cells. They “talk” with each other, learn from each other and act to keep us alive and well under difficult circumstances. Rather than wait for an “invader” to attack, your immune system makes a decision on the best strategy to keep you functioning in whatever stressful condition you may be.

Your current health is an expression of your immune system’s best effort to interact with your environment, both internal and external, to find and maintain a balance. No wonder some people call it the king of the body’s super systems!

Adaptuit contains a full blend of nature’s 10 most powerful adaptogens plus a mix of vital antioxidants and Aloe vera for enhanced nutrition.

What are adaptogens? Adaptogens aren’t new – though they are new to us. Knowledge about adaptogens dates

back thousands of years to ancient India and China, but serious scientific study did not begin until the late 1940s when Soviet scientists explored the benefits of these substances in fighting stress, preventing

and reducing illness, maintaining homeostasis and strengthening the body.

In frosty, post-WWII Siberia, 1,200 Russian scientists were busy cataloguing the nutritional value of 4,000 plants. Their mission was to create a natural formula that would help their elite athletes, cosmonauts and ballet dancers become the best in the world. These plants had the unique ability to thrive in the very harshest environments because they can achieve homeostasis,

or internal balance, even in changing, hostile circumstances. Due to this unique adaptive ability, these plants were called “adaptogens.”

In the 1950s and 1960s Russian athletes were given adaptogens, and wound up dominating the Olympic Games. Rumours swirled about illicit substances –

but it was actually the adaptogens that helped them improve their athletic performance.

The athletes were able to adjust to the stress of high level competition, allowing them to perform at their best.

With that in mind, we created the delicious Adaptuit drink, made with

three different classes of ingredients:

• 10 powerful adaptogens, specifically chosen for their beneficial properties

• A protective array of antioxidants• Aloe vera which helps enhance digestive

health and nutrient absorption

10 powerful adaptogens in AdaptuitSiberia is not the only harsh environment on earth. Other extreme locations produce plants with the qualities of an adaptogen. Adaptuit contains the following 10 plants that meet all the qualities of an adaptogen:

• Eleutherococcus Senticosus – used for increased endurance and memory improvement, as well as for chemo protection, immunological enhancement and overall well-being.

• Schizandra Chinensis – used to promote the production of body fluids, increase the body’s resistance to a broad spectrum of adverse

biological, chemical and physical effects and to help the body handle stress.

• Rhaponticum Carthamoides – used to provide relief from overstrained muscles, fatigue from overwork, and weakness from illness.

• Aralia Mandshurica – used to treat a wide range of conditions including fatigue, weakness, headaches, depression, immune weakness and stress.

• Rhodiola Root – used to increase resistance to physical stress, prevent fatigue and enhance physical and mental performance.

• Liquorice Root – used for gastritis, upper respiratory tract ailments and to balance the activity of stress-induced hormones (which may be responsible for the mood changes, including depression, that are associated with stress).

• Hawthorne Berry – used in traditional medicine to improve cardiovascular health in disorders related to constant stress (high blood pressure, arrhythmia, etc.), and various digestive ailments.

• Inonotus Obliquus – used widely in folk medicine as a remedy for cancer, stomach problems, ulcers and tuberculosis of the bones.

• Sorbus Aucuparia – has been shown to stimulate respiration and improve digestion. It is also claimed to be of benefit in the treatment of cancer.

• Viburnum Sargenti – used for anti-aging and antioxidant effects. It also stimulates immunity.

Adaptuit and Nopalea™

Packed with beneficial, powerful ingredients Both Adaptuit and Nopalea contain plants that have had to adapt to extreme environments. This conditioning affected the plants’ chemistry and their effects when used as nutrients.

Nopalea and BioflavonoidsNopalea offers an abundance of inflammation-busting nutrients called Bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids serve as anti-inflammatory nutrients.

The Nopal cactus of the Sonoran Desert contains high concentrations of Bioflavonoids. This is because the Sonoran Desert is the most extreme desert in the world and the Nopal plant needs Bioflavonoids to survive in this intense environment.

Adaptuit and AdaptogensAdaptogens were discovered in the harsh regions of Siberia. This area is known for its demanding climate where only the most robust vegetation can survive. The plants that have been successful were those most able to adapt to stressful conditions. Adaptogens have adapted to their growing environments, including the high altitude, cold weather, low oxygen and intense irradiation from the sun. In turn, the people who were nourished by these plants also showed an amazing resilience to their harsh, demanding environments.

Adaptuit contains 10 powerful adaptogens, specifically selected for their beneficial properties.

E veryday pressures can produce more than headaches: they are a proven factor in many serious diseases. That’s why wellness can be dramatically affected by stress, whatever

the source. Here, some recent evidence that stress is a mounting problem in the nation.

Money and jobs: key stressors For Australians, there are two main stress culprits: finances and the workplace. That was the conclusion of a worldwide report early this year that studied over 16,000 professionals about stress and its causes.

Here’s how Australians identified the sources of their stress:

• 49% cited money as their top stressor.• 48% said their job creates the most pressure. • 38% said their stress levels have risen in the past year.

An executive with the firm that conducted the study noted that the impact of stress is major for Australian businesses. “Their staff underperform, need more sick leave and are less efficient” when heavily stressed, she said. The cost to the national economy for workplace stress? An estimated $730 million.

More women than men time-stressedWhen it comes to feeling squeezed for time, women outnumber men. That, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, is the finding of a recent survey. Asked if they always or often felt rushed or pressed for time, the survey group split this way:

Men: 35% Women: 42%

The numbers for those who felt time-stressed were higher among caregivers – those aged 15 years or over who provided care to either a dependent child, or to an adult with illness or disability. Not surprisingly, the main reason for caregivers feeling time-stressed was the struggle to balance work and family responsibilities.

Pressure up, wellness downStress can have an effect on emotional and mental health as well as on physical well-being. That’s why it may be significant that for the second straight year, the Australian Psychological Society (APS) recently surveyed adults on their stress experiences.

After querying over 1,550 people aged 18 and over, the APS reported these findings:

• Almost one-quarter of Australians said they had “moderate to severe” stress levels last year, compared to the prior year.

• The survey group reported significantly lower levels of well-being than in the prior year.

• One in five Australians said that stress was having a strong impact on their mental health.

• One in three Australians said they were experiencing symptoms of depression.

• Almost half of Australians reported drinking to help manage stress.

Basic culprits: money, jobs, balance

discovered that, in order to learn, we need a certain amount of short-term tolerable stress to stay sharp and grow our brains. But too much stress can be, well, too much.

In the brain, moderate, occasional stress promotes new cell generation. That’s why the enjoyable stress of modest physical exercise benefits our brains. A certain amount of stress can actually improve your short-term memory. Stress in moderation is also conducive to overall health. For example, your immune system needs a form of stress to help it stay on guard to protect against infectious micro-organisms and cancer.

The basic stress response, fight or flight, is genetic. If it runs amok, however, or is turned on chronically, stress can damage memory formation and weaken the immune system.

Stress damages memories, judgmentHigh, chronic stress levels are unhealthy and have been shown to impair memory and judgment. Chronic stress involves too much of the stress hormone cortisol circulating in the blood. One result is impaired production of brain growth factors, protein molecules that stimulate the

growth of nerve cells and their cable-like connections with other brain cells.

Too much stress also affects the prefrontal cortex of the frontal lobes, the “executive center” of the brain. No wonder bad decisions at work or in our personal lives correlate with too much stress.

In short, chronic stress is a brain wrecker. It can also contribute to increased risk of heart attacks, high blood pressure, cancer and intestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcers.

“Stress proneness,” memory and Alzheimer’sDr. Robert Wilson and his colleagues in Chicago, IL, USA at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center and Institute for Healthy Aging use stress proneness – a person’s tendency to suffer psychological distress in response to negative emotional events in life – in their research. Their study of about 800 75-year-olds found that stress-prone women were more likely than others to have impaired memory for real-life events.

Over the study’s period of almost five years, 140 participants were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Those who had high stress proneness had twice the risk of developing Alzheimer’s than those with low stress proneness or hardiness personalities.

What’s stressing you out? Is it mortgage troubles, pressure on the job, a bumpy relationship? The unending nature of human stress, if not managed in a healthy way, is what can damage our bodies and brains.

Make stress work for you

Take stock of the daily events that give you stress, and find a stress-management technique (exercise, meditation, counselling) that best suits your individual needs and personality, coping style and severity of your stress.

Here’s a three-step quick-start guide to managing the stress in your life:

1. First and foremost, listen to your body. Frequent nervous-stomach sensations, recurrent tension headaches, muscle tension and soreness, especially in the neck and shoulders, and chronic fatigue can all be symptoms of stress.

2. Next, recognize that you are in a stressful situation or that your life has too much chronic stress. Admit that you feel stressed beyond your comfort zone. Each of us has a different threshold for stress and different tolerances. Often your spouse or one of your children will point out that you seem nervous, anxious or stressed. Listen to them.

3. Finally (and this is usually the most difficult step), adjust your attitude. Give yourself a checkup from the neck up. Listen to your mind, and if it tells you it feels stressed, take it seriously and take steps to be your own healer. If you feel you need help, get it from a spouse, friend, doctor, clergy or other trusted source.

A s flames raced toward his home, Sean R. had to make some quick decisions about

what to take before evacuating. The Waldo Canyon Wildfire that damaged so many Colorado Springs, CO, USA, homes was out of control and now threatened his own neighborhood.

Sean packed family photos, legal documents, clothes and two beloved dogs into his car. Then he made a quick decision to bring along three bottles of Adaptuit. This food proved to be a lifesaver during an agonising time. “I had a friend who graciously invited us to stay at his house,” Sean says. “The six-day wildfire was overwhelming, to say the least. Adaptuit was a real blessing. It helped calm my nerves and helped me get a decent night’s sleep.”

Sean’s other favoritesNow that Sean and his family are back in their Colorado home, he can easily reach for Nopalea™.

Sean has always been athletic, but once he hit his mid-30s, his body felt very sore after workouts. Since taking Nopalea he recovers much more quickly from after-exercise soreness. By increasing his exercise regimen, Sean was able to get back to his college weight.

His parents have a condition which causes recurring stiff, swollen and painful joints. Since taking Nopalea, the pain has eased.

Sean’s wife, Lorie, was in a car accident in her early 20s which caused migraines and neck pain for many years. After taking Nopalea, her pain has been greatly reduced.

Valuable “free” adviceAlthough Sean is the biggest fan of TriVita’s products, he says the Company’s true power rests with its “10 Essentials for Health and Wellness” (page 2). “If people would just practice the

T echnically, any painful inflammation of the joints is referred to as arthritis. However, the term is

used more generally for almost all joint problems.

Inflammatory arthritis, on the other hand, refers to a group of conditions which affect your immune system. This means that your body’s defence system starts attacking your own tissues instead of germs, viruses and other foreign substances, which can cause pain, stiffness and joint damage. These conditions are also known as autoimmune diseases. The three most common forms of inflammatory arthritis are:

• Rheumatoid arthritis • Ankylosing spondylitis • Psoriatic arthritis

Many people who live with inflam-matory arthritis show no visible signs of their diseases. They affect men, women and children of all ages. No one is too young to have an inflammatory arthritis disease.

How to deal with your arthritisAt this stage, unfortunately, there is no definitive cure for arthritis. However, there are many simple things you can do to help manage your pain and condition. This can include:

• Diet and healthy eating• Exercise• Medication• Acupuncture and naturopathy

Healthy eating habitsA healthy, balanced diet is very impor-tant for maintaining your general health and well-being.

Cancer, heart disease, obesity – these are three of the most common, serious health issues in the world. Know what they all may have in common? Inflammation. That’s right, the same joint inflammation that causes arthritis may be associated with other health problems, and your eating habits can play a big role in reducing inflammation and helping all of those conditions.

Researchers have learned that COX-2 enzymes become more active and cause more joint inflammation when you take in more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3s are the inflammation-fighting fatty acids found in coldwater fish like salmon and tuna. If you don’t eat a healthy diet, it is easy to consume far fewer of these than omega-6 fatty acids – which are found in egg yolks and meats and are prevalent in many snack foods, fried foods, margarines and other spreads. In fact, many of the foods people overindulge in during “snack attacks” are linked to increasing joint inflammation and obesity.

So one way to help fight inflammation with food is just by eating less of the “bad stuff” – processed and/or fried food, for instance – and more of the “good stuff,” like veggies, fruits, nuts, tea and even small amounts of dark

chocolate. Another suggestion: Take advantage of the natural anti-inflammatory nutrients found in the Nopal cactus and Nopalea™.

By eating a healthier diet, you’re also more likely to lose weight. That’s good news for your wardrobe, not just your joints.

And because fat cells can produce cytokines – proteins that promote inflammation – losing weight helps decrease inflammation in your body.

Some small studies have confirmed the direct impact of specific diets and foods on arthritis. One report showed positive results from following the Mediterranean Diet, which features lean protein like fish and poultry, and is high in plant-based foods such as beans, vegetables and olive oil. According to a 2011 review in Rheumatic Disease Clinics of North America, people with rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, reported a decrease in joint tenderness and an improvement in their sense of well-being. Another small study cited in the review found that in some people with RA, vegan and vegetarian diets brought symptom improvement.

Get movingResearch has found that regular exercise is one of the most effective treatments for arthritis and will also improve your overall health.

Examples of effective exercise activities for arthritis:

• Walking• Exercising in water, such as

hydrotherapy, swimming or water exercise classes

• Strength training• Tai chi, yoga and pilates

Medicines for arthritis? The main conventional treatment used for most autoimmune con-ditions is prednisone (steroids). This approach, at best, can just slow the progression of the disease.

Used long-term, prednisone can cause a host of problems, including osteoporosis, immune suppression, weight gain, bloating, thin skin, easy bruising and many other troubling side effects.

Acupuncture, naturopathy and meditation can also be helpful in managing the symptoms by decreasing the muscle tension.

Fortunately, some of the most effective weapons are in our hands. I recommend these simple but sound suggestions for self-management:

• Eat healthy.

• Get regular exercise.

• Maintain a normal body weight.

• Keep calm.

Vitamin D deficiency linked to food allergiesParkville, VIC, AUS

Infants who are Vitamin D deficient are three times more likely to have a food allergy, and 10 times more likely to have multiple food allergies, according to a study from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.

“Food allergy is on the rise, and Australia has some of the highest reported prevalence in the world with more than 10% of infants having food allergies. There has also been a rise in Vitamin D insufficiency, with up to 30% of Melbourne pregnant mothers now Vitamin D insufficient,” said lead researcher Professor Katie Allen.

However, the link between Vitamin D and allergy was only found in infants with Australian-born parents, leading researchers to speculate that genetics and/or the environment may also play a role.

People longer on life, shorter on health Boston, MA, USA

Globally, people are living longer, but they are spending more of those later years in poor health, according to a study in The Lancet.

The findings are part of a collaborative project, the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, launched by over 300 institutions including the Harvard School of Public Health. Researchers analysed health-adjusted life expectancy (a measurement of health in a population, based on length of life and health during life) in 187 countries over 20 years. They found that while people are living longer in 19 of 21 regions of the world, they are spending these later years living with poor health.

Life expectancy gains over the last 60 years are attributed to advances in medicine and public health, improved living standards, better access to education and declines in fertility.

Mediterranean diet reduces risk of heart attack and strokeBarcelona, Spain

A Mediterranean diet high in olive oil reduced the risk of heart attack and stroke by 30% compared to a low-fat diet, say researchers from the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona. A Mediterranean diet high in nuts lowered the risk by 28%.

In the study, 7,447 people with heart disease risk factors were asked to eat either a Mediterranean diet high in olive oil or nuts, or a low-fat diet. Those in the Mediterranean diet groups were advised to eat three servings of fruits and two servings of vegetables a day, fish and legumes at least three times a week, and white meat instead of red. The olive oil group consumed four tablespoons of olive oil each day while the nut group ate a daily mixture of walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts.

M y favourite part about being a holistic nutritionist is when I see the light

of hope and empowerment in my clients’ eyes. It’s that moment when they realize that they really do have control over their own health and how they feel on a daily basis.

When someone walks into my office with the debilitating pain of arthritis as his or her chief complaint, my first line of defense is pH balance, or acid-alkaline balance. Therefore, I immediately have clients test the pH of their saliva and urine consecutively for six days to see how hard the body is working just to keep them alive, let alone allowing for vibrant health.

The standard Western diet is an overly processed diet full of acid-forming foods such as meat, dairy, wheat, chemicalized junk foods, artificial sweeteners and sugar. Stress is also a huge contributing factor to an over-acid condition. Nine out of 10 times, my clients are acidic. They need to incorporate more alkaline-forming foods (and stress-relieving activities such as breathing deeply) into their diet and lives to gain the results they desire, namely freedom of movement and decreased inflammation. Moving toward alkalinity promotes better overall organ function, allows for the release of toxins, improves mental clarity and affords natural weight loss. It also profoundly improves digestion and heartburn and is a valuable safeguard against cancer.

There are so many small changes that can make a profound difference in our health. These changes do not have to be considered a sacrifice, but instead can be viewed as an “upgrade.”

For example, apple cider vinegar (acv) is very alkalizing, while all other vinegars are acidic. Consider upgrading to acv as your staple vinegar. Lime is more alkalizing than lemon, so use that in the water you drink throughout the day or in your cooking when possible. Brown rice has less acid than white rice; raspberries are highly alkalizing while cranberries are very acidic. Garlic, too, has a profound effect on acid-alkaline balance and is an easy addition to many dishes.

Far and away, green leafy vegetables are the most alkalizing foods. Coincidentally they happen to be the single most missing foods in the modern Western diet. By green “leafies,” I mean kale, collard greens, dandelion greens, bok choy, arugula, spinach, mixed field greens, etc. Simply by incorporating two servings of leafy green vegetables in your diet on a daily basis, you will be well on your way to finding pH balance.

Try the simple yet absolutely delicious recipe above.

with your FORKFight inflammation

1 bunch kale (the curly-leaf variety works best for this recipe)30 ml grapeseed oil20 ml apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar2 1/2 ml good quality saltground black pepper 1-2 seasonings of your choice:nutritional yeast flakes, garlic powder, red chili flakes, curry powder, Italian herbs DIRECTIONS Put a large, shallow roasting pan or sheet pan in the oven and pre-heat to 190 degrees. Rinse kale and dry completely. Remove stems, and cut into pieces approximately 7.6 cm wide. In a large bowl, use your hands to combine the kale with the next 4 ingredients. Season to taste with your choice of suggested ingredients, coating kale evenly. When the oven is up to temperature, carefully put the kale into the hot pan, spreading it out into one layer. It will sizzle. Roast in oven for 10 minutes and then gently stir or turn the leaves. Continue roasting another 5-7 minutes until kale is crisp and dry but not too brown. Some may be chewy instead of crisp. Serve immediately.

Stressed out? Let it go with TriVita’s 10 “Stress-entials”

Don’t you sometimes wish you could let go of everyday pressures? Nothing can make

the stress go away, but there are several proven ways to relax its grip and regain your serenity.

TriVita’s “10 Essentials for Health and Wellness” have been the bedrock of the company since its founding in 1999 – but they’re more than just enduring ideas. Each one is backed by scientific research and proven to help you enjoy physical, emotional and spiritual wellness. Here are 10 simple solutions we can all be thankful for.

PHYSICAL

1. Breathe deeply. Under stress, muscles tense and breathing is fast and shallow. Flip the switch: inhale through your nose as you count to five. Hold it a moment; then count to five as you exhale through your mouth.

2. Drink water. When you’re dehydrated by as little as two full glasses of water, your body is stressed. This raises your levels of cortisol, a stress hormone. So you feel more stressed, and stress causes more dehydration. Break the cycle and drink some water.

3. Sleep peacefully. A full night’s sleep helps reduce stress. Try these tips: avoid exercise, caffeine and alcohol at night; keep your bedroom cool and dim; try to go to sleep and rise at the same time each day.

4. Eat nutritiously. Did you know that poor eating habits put the

body under stress? Plus, they weaken the immune system, which can lead to infections, which puts the body under more stress.

5. Enjoy activity. Exercise decreases stress in several ways: it eases muscle tension, stimulates the “feel-good” hormones, burns off stress hormones and increases an overall sense of well-being.

EMOTIONAL

6. Give and receive love. The sweetest emotion also has a stress-reducing benefit: it can decrease stress hormones and build emotional strength. Love helps us feel happy, be healthier and live longer.

7. Be forgiving. When you decide to let go of resentment, you free yourself to enjoy less stress, lower blood pressure, healthier relationships and the blessings of peace.

8. Practice gratitude. What are you grateful for? Every day, identify at least one thing that makes your life better. Stress thrives on griping and negativity; gratitude helps stress wither.

9. Develop acceptance. When you let go of what you can’t change, it releases you from the stress of worry and fear.

SPIRITUAL

10. Develop a relationship with God. However you nourish your spirituality, doing so can help manage stress. Experts say it helps us feel a sense of purpose and even enjoy greater health.

By Linda Hertzberg

Exercise & inflammation: how one affects the other

A s you probably know, inflammation is a vital part of your body’s immune system. When you

have a fever or cut your finger, your immune system goes into high gear by increasing blood flow and bringing in special immune cells to repair and remove damaged tissues. This is the inflammatory response at work, and this response is a sign of a healthy immune system.

However, chronic (constant) inflam-mation can damage your health. Did you know that too much exercise can make this worse?

Human genetic design requires regular exercise to maintain a healthy immune system that can keep inflammation under control. In ancient times, men and women exercised naturally by hunting and gathering food to survive. Today, we don’t have to do much more than drive to the grocery store. This is our modern-day dilemma: in order to fulfil the requirements of our ancient genetic design, we must get the right amount of exercise to keep our bodies in a healthy immune/inflammatory balance.

Goldilocks had it right… just rightAchieving just the right amount of exercise to balance your inflammatory system is like the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” Too little exercise may not help enough and too

much exercise may promote chronic inflammation. Just the right amount of exercise combined with time for recovery is what’s needed. Every person has to find the proper balance of exercise and recovery.

The importance of recoveryModerate-intensity exercise like fast walking 5 or 6 days a week for 20-30 minutes is great for beginners. Depending on your fitness level, you might experience muscle soreness. Soreness is an indicator that you should let your body recover by taking it easy for a day. Resting will allow your body to accomplish the complicated chemical process of getting rid of the inflammation that’s making you sore. The good news is that this recovery process will actually make you healthier and stronger.

Varying the type of exercise you do will help with recovery, too. Instead of walking, try swimming, dancing or weight training. I recommend cross-training, which means engaging in many forms of movement or exercise as a way of avoiding over-working the same muscles in the same way every day. As you get stronger, you will find that you will not get sore as much. That is a training benefit of exercise: your body adapts through the inflammation process.

T he huge international success of Nopalea brings questions about the anti-

inflammatory wellness drink into TriVita every day. Brazos Minshew, TriVita’s Chief Science Officer, answers some of the queries that come up most often.

Q: How soon can I expect results after drinking Nopalea?

A: Although some people report feelings of relief

the same day they start taking Nopalea, most people take longer to feel the results. Nopalea helps break the cycle of inflammation. How long it takes to work depends on how much inflammation you have and how long you have had it. Start the Loading Phase of Nopalea (90-180 ml a day) and continue until you feel that the cycle of inflammation is broken and your pain is reduced.

Q: What’s the difference between the fruit in the Nopal cactus and other superfruits?

A: The big difference is a unique concentration of

anti-inflammatory nutrients called Bioflavonoids in the Nopal cactus superfruit. The Nopal cactus super-fruit is the only one that acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Q: Is it best to take the full serving once a day, or split it up throughout the day?

A: Our suggestion is to take Nopalea twice daily through

the Loading Phase. When that is completed – when the cycle of inflammation is broken – simply listen to your body as to how frequently you need to take it.

Q: Is it okay to mix Nopalea with other beverages such as orange juice, club soda or water to reduce the sweetness?

A: Yes, it will not dilute the effect at all.

Q: Can I mix Nopalea with Adaptuit?

A: Yes, Adaptuit is formulated to work hand-in-hand with

Nopalea. Adaptogens in Adaptuit address the cause of inflammation, and the ingredients in Nopalea address the effect.

Q: Should I take Nopalea with or without food?

A: Either way is fine. Nopalea is a food and will digest like

any other food.

Q: Is Nopalea Certified Organic?

A: Nopalea is Organic; how- ever, since the ingredients

are “wildcrafted” by the Sonora natives (defined as “collected in the wild without cultivation”), it cannot be legally “certified” as organic.

Q: Is Nopalea gluten-free?

A: Although Nopalea contains no gluten, it is not certified

to be gluten-free. A product that is certified gluten-free must be pro-duced in a facility where there is no chance of cross-contamination with other ingredients containing gluten. Several ingredients in Nopalea are processed in facilities that do not have this certification.

R elationship conflict can be a significant source of stress in your life. I don’t claim to be a relationship expert, but

I do believe that those who have gone through failed marriages can glean helpful insight for themselves and others.

As I look back at the little stressors in my marriage relationship that even-tually broke it apart, I am reminded how important being honest is when communicating with your partner. I would have been the first to say my spouse and I had a great marriage. All of my friends thought so as well, so it came as quite a shock when it failed.

But my former husband kept the things that bothered him about me to himself. There weren’t a lot of things at first, but one very important issue for him was my lack of interest in fitness and weight management. He loved going to the gym and working out and back then I thought of it as a place to avoid at any cost.

He slowly began to resent me being overweight and not doing anything about it, and as time went on his resentment grew. The problem is he didn’t tell me how deeply it bothered him! I suppose it was such a touchy subject, and I would get defensive so it was easier for him to avoid talking about it. But little irritations soon pile up and a negative story begins to grow.

It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you’ve done, or what you’ve got. You can have the best relationship in the world, and you will encounter stressors once in a while. The difference is how you deal with them. You’ve got to talk; talk them through to resolve the conflict.

Unexpressed anger can be unhealthy – or worseIn real life, conflict is inevitable, and resolving it effectively can often be a pathway to greater understanding between two people, bringing them closer. Relationships in which anger is suppressed and unacknowledged by one or both partners can actually be physically unhealthy. Research has found that in couples where one partner habitually suppressed anger, partners tended to die younger. Unresolved conflict is serious.

I would recommend taking a conflict resolution class together if you observe conflict avoidance and defensive behaviours developing. Do not mask your true feelings. Get them out in a controlled atmosphere and be honest. If you avoid dealing with the issues now, stress will accumulate and can be very damaging to your health as well as to your relationship.

Donna Kafer, TriVita’s chaplain, has also served as chaplain to the Arizona, USA, State Legislature for 16 years. She has written two books, and has a third in progress.

By Chaplain Donna Kafer

“But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Saviour; my God will hear me”. ~ Micah 7:7

T here have been times in my life when I’ve prayed to God with great expectancy and urgency, only to be met by

silence. This was more than frustrating and perplexing, because I needed an answer and I needed it right away. I wondered what I was doing wrong. Was I not passionate or eloquent enough in my prayer? Was God just not paying attention to my particular dilemma? Does He not care about my plight?

As I grew in my understanding of the ways of the Lord, it began to dawn on me that it had little to do with how eloquently I prayed, much less my insistence that He answer right away. Rather it had to do with God’s timing, not mine, and His perfect will in the matter. I did not control God and it was presumptuous of me to assume that I could.

We often find ourselves perplexed when God does not react or respond in the way that we think He should. What is the matter with me? Why does He seem to listen to others, but not to me? These types of thoughts pummel us violently until we give up, throw our hands in the air and just decide He doesn’t care one bit about our suffering.

Only He knows the right timeNothing could be further from the truth; our Father in heaven is silent for good reason. It has nothing to do with what we’re doing right or doing wrong. Only He knows the answer to our situation and because only He knows what we need, when we need it, He waits for just the right time to respond. He also waits until our faith kicks in and overrides our emotional meltdowns. Sometimes this is a teaching moment in the matters of trust and in our faithfulness in waiting for God to answer our prayers. When we learn to trust, wait and listen expectantly, then He will move, and always in His concise, perfect timing.

Where are you in this particular and most difficult aspect along your faith journey? Are you content to lean into the truth of this message? Are you ready to throw in the towel, so to speak, because He hasn’t replied and the silence is killing you? I would encourage you to see it through, because the best is yet to come.

The discipline of waiting is a true matter of trust, of faith, of knowing that the God of the universe loves you and cares for you deeply. Pray for your faith to be strengthened; His power is always yours!

WAITING ON GOD:IN HIS SILENCE,

HAVE FAITH
